Mexican Cantina Brings Family Recipes and Fresh Cocktails to Ocean Beach - Eater San Diego

"A sought-after spot in Ocean Beach — the sixty-year-old Bacon Street landmark Nati’s Mexican Restaurant — is starting this decade as a brand new Mexican eatery and cocktail bar from a team that’s familiar to the local community. Ownership includes Brendan Huffman and Hoffman Leung from Social Syndicate, which runs Wonderland Ocean Pub and OB Surf Lodge, and Matt and Judd Braun, the brothers behind Blue Water Seafood who partnered with the hospitality group last year to open an OB outpost. With La Doña, Leung says it was important for the group to pay homage to Nati’s by bringing Mexican food back to the 4,000-square-foot space, which has been transformed by design firm Tecture and features mostly outdoor seating. The restaurant is scheduled to open this Saturday, October 10 and will serve lunch and dinner daily. Born and raised in Tijuana, chef Gabby Lopez’s family is from Guadalajara and Nayarit. Many of their passed-down recipes were incorporated into her menu, which includes a trio of mariscos dishes, mini Tijuana-style hot dogs, a variety of tacos, and larger plates ranging from pork chile verde to chicken tinga enchiladas, a molcajete of seafood sautéed in garlic butter, and carne a la tampiqueña, a popular dish of citrus and garlic-marinated steak. The bar program includes beer from in-house brewery Resident Brewing as well as Mexican craft labels like Colima and Insurgente. Cocktails range from classic margaritas to the tropical OB Parrot made with Doctor Bird Jamaica Rum, Amaras Verde Mezcal, Rinomoto, demerara, pineapple, and lime." - Candice Woo

Google
Great for large groups. We went for brunch with 9 people out of everything ordered the Doña's Chilaquiles & Steak & Mushroom Omelette were very good! For drinks: Vaya Con Dios, Doña Margarita & Spanish Coffee were super yummy. The other items ordered: Bistec con Huevos, Los Bennys, Chorizo con Papas Burrito & Pan Frances were just average. The service & ambience were very good!

Google
This was the best Mexican food I've ever had! The service was genuine and sweet, too. Although I did go here alone and felt a little awkward explaining that to them at first, that's most places, so I can't really ding them on that. Atmosphere was fantastic.

Google
Great tacos and service! We enjoyed the yummy corn tortillas and I loved the carnitas. Beans were good. Taco Tuesday deal was okay? Was expecting more. Margs were okay and the rice wasn't seasoned. Overall really enjoyed our meal.

La Doña in Ocean Beach is an absolute gem! The food was incredible—packed with flavor, fresh ingredients, and a perfect blend of bold and authentic. Every bite hit the spot. On top of that, Lauren was my server and she was outstanding—super friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. Her recommendations were spot-on and she really made me feel welcome. Can’t wait to come back! Highly recommend!

Google
Ask for amanda when you get here. This girl has the menu down and actually has taste buds. She recommended the chicken tinga. Wow. Blown away. So flavorful. Fast and filling. She also recommend a spicy passion fruit tequila. 20/10 recommend eating here

Google
BEST Margarita! The churro margarita is the most unique and delicious marg I’ve ever had. Not to mention the vegan flautas. What an incredible restaurant. Lori was the best and got me a virgin so I could enjoy too! She was the best. We’re truly wowed!

My wife was in the mood for a Mexican breakfast after church, and we wanted to try a new spot. I searched for Mexican brunch and found this place near our location. We arrived just after opening and it seemed they were a bit understaffed, because there was no host and nobody acknowledged us. The bartender is closest to the entrance and although most barkeeps are friendly and welcoming, this guy didn't even look at us. Not a huge deal, but a welcoming gesture and acknowledgement could go a long way. After standing there waiting for several minutes, we were seated and the waiter brought us water. We asked for chips and salsa which we didn't see on the menu, but we knew they had from the photos on Google. The chips are good with a nice seasoning and the salsa is fresh and flavorful. The menu is pretty basic and we would have liked to see just a little bit more variety, but we both found something appetizing to try. My wife ordered Bistec con Huevos and I ordered the Doña's Chilaquiles with carnitas added and the green sauce. We also ordered a Sweet Canela waffle to share. The waffle came out 1st and is the best sweet waffle we've found. It was delicious! It is made with a light, fluffy batter and the perfect cinnamon/sugar ratio. They top it with a vanilla cream & berries which are fantastic. The green sauce on the Doña's chilaquiles was so good and the carnitas were well seasoned, succulent, and very tender. I highly recommend adding this to the dish! All in all, a good experience and tasty food and price is about what you'd expect for a Sunday Brunch. We did not add any cocktails this time. We both ordered coffee and it was not great, plus they don't top off for you. You have to ask more coffee and they just bring you a new cup. As mentioned, I think they were a bit understaffed and service was slow and not as attentive as one would expect. But with the quality of the food, we will definitely be back to try this spot again someday.

Google
La Doña is a very casual, comfy, and friendly restaurant with good service and a broad menu. They offer brunch on weekends as well as their typical menu. The drinks are all very well crafted, and the food is flavorful. My one complaint is that the Mar y Tierra burrito was too wet inside, leading to a subpar texture. However, the other things we tried, from the margarita to the eggs Benedict, were delightful. I would return to eat here again.

Yelp
I always make it a point to stop into La Doña for dinner or drinks when I'm in town. This time was of course more of the same. Excellent service from Josh at the bar, and when he let me know there was a brunch menu I knew I had to come back in the morning! The vegan soyrizo burrito was huge and amazing, had to take most of it to go...to the plant sale that Josh also clued me in to! Thanks so much for another amazing visit, can't wait to come back!

Yelp
We found this place on accident and are SO glad we did. We stopped one night and had birra tacos and chicken tinga tacos, not pictured because it was so good we didn't get a chance to snap any before it was gone! We went back and tried the dishes pictured here, this will be added in to our date night rotation for sure. The staff is so friendly and eager to ensure your experience is nothing short of amazing.

Yelp
Me and my family came here after a day at the zoo. After all the snacks we had before, my appetite wasn't very big for dinner here. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed my time here. The bathrooms were clean. I loved the plant they had inside a tiled toilet. It was a cute piece of decor. I had ordered a coconut margarita upon suggestion. I like sweeter drinks and the waitress said this was the best options. The drink was strong in the beginning. I had to let it sit a bit and stir a lot. But in the end it was a pretty good drink. For food I ordered some ground beef and potato tacos. They were pretty good but the last taco I just ate the insides because the shell was hurting my teeth. The rice was very good! My favorite side. The beans were okay, edible but I have had better before. My kiddo got a kids chicken taco with rice and she finished her plate! She loved it all. The vibe of this place is cute overall, the staff is friendly, and the food is pretty good. My parents like to go here every time we are in Cali so I know I'll be returning.

Yelp
Came here Mother's Day weekend with a big group. It was easy to make a reservation and the service was great. The food was good for a busy holiday weekend and it came out fast. They have meat, veggie and pescatarian options and it's kid friendly. Most of us tried different taco options and my daughter opted for the bacon wrapped hot dog. Not a traditional thing you see at a typical Mexican restaurant but she sure did enjoy it and surprisingly ate most of it.

Yelp
Came here for happy hour after work. Kim was our server. She's literally the best. Great recommendations, very attentive, & kept us laughing. She suggested the queso dip, ugh, wow. So fire, I could eat it until I threw up, honestly. Too addicting. Salad & fish tacos were fire as well. Drinks are strong, but delicious. I love that they have inside & outside seating. The patio is my favorite. Eating light outside by the beach will never get old. Hope to get Kim as our server every time we go!

Yelp
Excellent! Super cute chill looking place. We were sat on the back patio and had a wonderful server. The food was exceptional! You can tell only the freshest ingredients are used and the presentation is wonderful. The wine came out super cold and the chicken flautas were divine. The bacon wrapped jalapeños had the perfect amount of heat. We will be back!

Yelp
Go to La Doña and order the Fajitas. A bit pricey, but easily shareable. Enough for two with leftovers too! Have J.C. behind the bar make a Spicy Margarita for you. Thank me later. Steak & Shrimp Fajitas $28.95 Citrus and garlic ponzu-marinated arrachera steak and jumbo shrimp, served on a sizzling iron skillet with peppers, onions, and jalapeños. Served with rice, beans, guacamole, and your choice of tortillas.

Yelp
One of the best places in Ocean Beach to eat at! Not knowing where to go on Easter, we came here, and they were busy! We did get a great table, and had to keep Cako under it. This actually worked out really well! I ordered a Spanish coffee...rum, coffee liquor, coffee, and cream! Sugar rim and this drink was delicious!!! So I could feel the liquor AND caffeine...LOL! We started with the creamy queso....sooo good! It must've smelled so good, the large labrador, who was tied up at the bar, came up behind me and pawed my back! LOL! I guess he wanted some too! Of course, the owners had no clue he did this. He also laid down right behind me...waiting...LOL! This visit I had the chicken tinga enchiladas. These were delicious! I like that you get three instead of the standard two. Daveed had the Tampiquena...7 oz grilled steak...said it was really good! I wish I had room for dessert but that will have to wait for another visit. Cako still Approves!!!

Yelp
I really liked the outdoor ambience and taco Tuesday specials (even though, they didn't apply this discount to our check). The elote was top notch. We also got the Birria, steak, and monster tacos. Overall we were super excited for the good eats and margs.
google avatar

Mahathi M.

Yelp
Great vegetarian options! The cauliflower tacos are delicious and the mushroom tacos weren't too bad either. The server misunderstood my order and brought me two dishes instead of one. After I pointed this out, they apologized and said that I could just keep the second dish for free which was very nice of them. For drinks, I had a La Rosita which was alright. I was hoping for a stronger elderflower taste, but it kind of just tasted like a margarita. Overall, it was a good meal.
google avatar

Sol C.

Yelp
Such a fun, festive vibe. Amazing cocktails and fantastic food. We loved everything we ordered including the birria tacos and the tostada trio appetizer. However the star of the show (shockingly) was the sweet potato flautas! This dish was really unique and special.
google avatar

Steve Y.

Yelp
Tonight was our first time here. So far the food seems great! Loved the Pozole - generous with the meat. I really enjoyed the Flautas de Camote (sweet potato flautas. My wife and son had fish tacos. For dessert, we had the Churros and Pasteluto de Elote y Piña. Yummy! Our server, Kimberly, and her team were fantastic!
google avatar

Odelia F.

Yelp
Honestly I was really disappointed by this. It's a fun space if you want the indoor-outdoor feel, and to have some drinks and chips. The food and service was really lacking The chorizo mussel appetizer had good flavour, but was too salty, and the one slice of bread felt stingy The steak and shrimp burrito was a meat lovers dream, but the execution was off. The sauces for the wet burrito were watered down both in flavour and texture. The shrimp was generally well cooked. The steak was cooked in a sauce and the flavour was a bit strange It took a long time for our server to come to the table, and did not replace our empty water jug even when she passed by to check on us
google avatar

Sylvia G.

Yelp
Good food and good ambiance! Service was great too. We ordered the corn, guacamole, and the queso to start all three were fresh and so so good. My favorites were the corn and guacamole. The Brussel sprouts are delicious and a large side to share. All of us ordered the quesabirria two with beef one with chicken and all were great and very filling. Would definitely come back. And kid friendly!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, friendly service. Hand some quick appetizers, delish! We popped in on a whim- we were not disappointed!
google avatar

Yelp
As you can see from the size comparison of the Taco and my hand, all you're going to need is one Taco! Huge, Delicious and a GREAT price. Friendly staff and awesome atmosphere! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Clythie C.

Yelp
I love this spot. Service is always great. The ambiance is cozy while still being indoor-outdoor. Cocktails are fabulous and plentiful. The beans are too delicious! I adore the TJ Dog appetizer. The bar seats are super comfortable. I've tried almost everything on the menu and haven't had a bad choice yet. The tampequeña plate is my fave. See you at La Doña soon.
google avatar

Deya Z.

Yelp
My fam is from TJ & Mexicali so i had to try this place! First, i loved the airiness & open feel of the place. I was greeted right away with a HH menu and dinner menu. The shrimp cocktail was good, if a bit too tomato-y & the TJ dog could've used a jalapeño on the side, but all in all, a decent place. they were out of the crackers for the cocktail so they substituted a TON of chips. Can't speak on the drinks since i only got a beer, but the margs looked refreshing!!
google avatar

Carina C.

Yelp
The food , the service and the atmosphere was perfect to end our last day in San Diego. I ordered the ceviche and it was delicious but on the spicy side. Still very tasty and flavorful.
google avatar

Maura W.

Yelp
Josh and Kevin are amazing! No one makes a coconut marg like Josh - light ice, perfectly balanced and gives me wings! Love coming here and feeling taken care of in a world where great customer service is hard to find. Gracias!!!
google avatar

Jacob G.

Yelp
Everything was amazing! The open courtyard was beautiful and very relaxing. The workers are all so friendly and had great recommendations. Didn't wait long for anything and it all tasted fantastic.
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
Food was delicious and hot when it arrived but service was a little slow for how busy it seemed. The outdoor space was large and had many choices of where to sit. They had quite a few vegetarian choice but I opted for the taquitos. I was slightly underwhelmed but overall a tasty lunch

Carolina N.

Yelp
Food and service Amazing We had the molcajete! plus more beans and rice and extra tortilla also ordered the guacamole and that was too. we are going back this week for Tequila event!
google avatar

Kareem A.

Yelp
Enjoyed my tacos though I expected a bit more flavor. Service was good, decent outdoor space.
google avatar

Ali R.

Yelp
I used to think this place was okay. However now I think it's really good. I'm not sure if there is a new chef etc. There menu options have grown. The beans are amazing, perhaps the best I've ever had. Oh & Adrianna the manager is the best! I live literally 600 FEET from La Dona, I'm super local.... I stopped coming in for a long time but I'm back now. You have impressed me.
google avatar

Daniela V.

Yelp
The vibe is very cute, that's the main reason why we stopped to try. Service was pretty fast for a Saturday night, very friendly staff. Food was good, I would go back and try something different. Drinks were really good too. The churros were different but very fluffy and savory. Be sure to try this place out, it's right next to the beach.
google avatar

Darian G.

Yelp
Damn! That was a good taco! Visiting from Vegas and this place had a patio off of OB for our dogs to chill with us. Gave our dogs a water bowl and our server was really fast with our orders. The outdoors has a cool ambiance with a variety of different chairs and good tunes. The Beef Birria Quesa Tacos were some of the best damn tacos I've had in my life. Absolutely dripping with flavor and the spices were so strong but never overwhelming. Cheesy and oily and delicious! Go for these birria tacos when you're in OB!
google avatar

Debi D.

Yelp
This place is in a great location with huge windows to let in the ocean breeze. They have a dog friendly patio which is great. The service is fantastic and the drinks are great. I had the fajitas which were very good. I will be back to this spot.

Yelp
We did a belated Father's Day dinner here last year. We parked in the paid lot, since there was no parking available on the street. We were seated out in the patio and service was a bit slow at first. We waited a long time before anyone came to take our drink orders. Complimentary chips and salsa was brought out and the salsa was delicious! We got some guacamole topped with roasted pepitas and queso fresco. It was served with crispy chicharrones- so good. Our drinks came over 20 minutes later. They were refreshing and light. My MIL ordered the chicken tingas, which comes with rice and beans. Hubby got the tampiquena, which is steak topped with a mix of sautéed peppers and onions, served with a guajillo queso enchilada, panela cheese, grilled chile guerito, spring onion, guacamole, and rice and beans! It was huge and tasty. My FIL ordered the molcajet el patron and it was filled with carne asada, pollo asado, shrimp, chorizo, and salchicha picosa in a chipotle sauce topped with queso panella, nopales, chile guerro, and green onion. He shared some with me and it was nicely seasoned. I personally got the shrimp aguachile rojo and it was so delightful and fresh. Overall, the food is great and I can't wait to come back again!
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
The food was simply amazing here. Every sauce was unique but well balanced and creatively authentic. Burrito was huge- definitely worth the price, accommodated a special request with a smile. Happy hour margaritas and fried chicken taco was scrumptious! Chips n salsa also stellar. Chile relleno plate was presented well and just the right size. My combo cheese enchilada and shrimp taco plate was flavorful- unique sauce on the large shrimp- kinda sweet but was expecting the typical Baja style. Escabeche just blew my mind! Patio was cute, nice restroom access- but flies were pesky. Definitely in our OB rotation and can't wait to return!
google avatar

M G.

Yelp
First time coming on a Saturday 3/22/25 early evening and the food was SO DELICIOUS!! I ordered the chile Colorado , meat was tender and had great flavor. My husband orders the quesabirria and WOW!! Amazing!! Our sever was friendly and the bartenders were attentive and great drinks! We are coming back for sure !!
google avatar

Jeremy H.

Yelp
Our server Ruby was great. I told her I was really hungry and she recommended the Molcajete El Patron. It was huge and very flavorful and very hot temperature wise. I couldn't finish it, so I took it home and had it for breakfast with some scrambled eggs. Delicious! The only thing I didn't like was the flies in the patio area But they took care of that problem by putting a little fan on the table. Thanks Ruby we will definitely be back before we go home
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Fantastic all the way around. I had the ceviche and my friend had the Birras. We both had tons of chips and salsa. The food was fantastic and the service was even better. The restaurant is clean and open with immaculate bathrooms. Only thing that's a little tacky is the staff standing out on the sidewalk directly behind the kitchen smoking. The dessert was fantastic too. Coconut flan and churros. Parking next door was ridiculously expensive. $24 for 2 hours.
google avatar

Angela G.

Yelp
Wonderful margaritas!! Salsa and (hidden hot & spicy salsa) + chips were great! Josh was amazing!
google avatar

Vicki P.

Yelp
Ordered the queso (small) and birria taco. Queso didn't look like cheese and had a weird consistency. Must've been a shift change because my taco took FOREVER to come out. And when it finally showed up it was greasy, salty as heck, and the beans and rice were cold. Also no consume for my taco. Overall a crappy experience. If it hadn't been for Lauren I never would have gotten my cold dinner. After this probably won't be back.

Andy L.

Yelp
Been there a few times and have not had a bad meal. Based upon the servers recommendation we did try the pineapple dessert, something honestly we would not have picked. Glad we did, it was great. Last night (Saturday May 3), they had live music and a lady making tortillas out front. The atmosphere was fun and lively.
google avatar

Gail H.

Yelp
Food was great! We ordered the fajita special-- steak & shrimp. Flavorful. Plentiful. Hot! Ambiance great! Cozy. Colorful. Comfortable. Margarita: what I hate most is an expensive drink that is all ice and no booze. Ordered 2 and no buzz!! Not good.
google avatar

Yelp
google avatar

Courtney P.

Yelp
Sat on the patio on a Thursday afternoon for happy hour. Great food! Chips and salsa first basket complimentary than u pay $2.25 or something like that for more. The pollo nachos were mouth watering!!! Service was good. Patio was super cute!
google avatar

Tracey A.

Yelp
Enjoyed our food and loved the atmosphere here. Service was attentive and allowed us to eat at the pace we requested. Recommend
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
Truly, I love the environment. Food is okay, not the biggest portions but the drinks are good. They have both semi indoor (i call it that because huge windows / garage style) and outdoor space. Parking can be hard but that's OB for ya. Service has always taken a bit for me because they're always busy but snag a reservation and that should help
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
We came here 2 nights in a row w the kids. It was a great experience both times. Service was nice , friendly and efficient. Ambiance so super chill and comforting. Kid friendly cool vibes all around, dogs everywhere, heathers etc. The food was actually delicious- chicken tinga, burritos etc. Meals were quite large Highly recommend. Would def come here again if I'm back in San Diego !! Loved it
google avatar

Science L.

Yelp
oh. my. god. I will come back here so many times for the CRISPY BRUSSEL SPROUTS. yes crispy brussel sprouts are always good but THESE!! seriously, the combinations of tastes and textures in my mouth are divine. The crisp little crunch of the perfectly charred sprout + bacon is smothered just enough of an exquisite jalapeño vinaigrette (not too spicy) sauce. It is delicious. Then to add a hint of creamy cotija and a couple of little citrusy pops from the pomegranate seeds in each bite. Oh blisssss.... Service and drinks and other food were also good but, for real- the SPROUTS!!!

Jaime S.

Yelp
I would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the entire team at La Doña who made my birthday weekend all the better. From Carley our server, to Kevin who helped me set everything up, and the cooks and the runners. I cannot put into words the amount of gratitude I have for the entire staff. I had a group of family and friends who came into town for my birthday, many of them who already knew the quality of this restaurant and a few first timers. Since I live in OB I knew it was the right choice. Please go to this restaurant if you haven't already and please return as the quality has not changed since the first time I ate here. By the way.. the molcajete is excellent and the presentation superb! Thank you so much La Doña!

Elysia R.

Yelp
Place was super cute & has a nice outside area. The service was food & the food was pretty good! A good quick place to grab some lunch with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
The meal was exceptional, the service impeccable, and the ambiance delightful. I plan to return to enjoy their extensive beverage selection.
google avatar

Brett M.

Yelp
Big bummer as it is no longer what it once was. Margaritas were very light and watered down. All our food came out cold and just didn't taste like what it used too. Service was great but overall the experience was disappointing. Much better Mexican restaurants around.
google avatar

Yadi G.

Yelp
Really delicious food! Service was also great. Our server was great at making suggestions and finding what we needed just with a few words. I had a taco plate of pollo asado and carne asada. The meat was soft, tender and full of flavor! The beans were tasty, the rice was OK but this place was definitely top tier food with top tier service.
google avatar

Elly H.

Yelp
Food was so yummy and flavorful! The staff was so nice and friendly, they were also really good about allergies and making sure we were safe. The ambiance was very nice, relaxing, warm, and pleasant. Highly recommend going here it's some of the best Mexican in SD!
