Where to Drink Pacific Northwestern Hard Cider in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"La Familia, Spanish for “the family,” is very much a family operation. Drawing inspiration from Mexican aguas frescas, the Gonzalez family blends matriarch Lourdes’s jamaica and tamarind juice recipes with a cider base made with Pacific Northwestern apples. The Salem-born cidery expanded to Portland in July 2024 — at the Hawthorne Boulevard taproom, patrons sample flights of La Familia’s four flavors and drink cider-based cocktails like mangonada cidertinis and jamaica margaritas while munching on quesadillas made with Three Sisters Nixtamal tortillas and Don Froylan Creamery queso Oaxaca." - Janey Wong

I went here with my dad on Father’s Day, and it was such a great experience! The food was amazing, and the vibe was really nice. I especially loved the street corn that came with the tortilla chips — it was super flavorful!

I’ve been to this place a couple times now, and each experience has been wonderful! The same staff member has helped us every time, and he’s been nothing short of fantastic. He’s not only kind and welcoming, but also insightful about the menu and what they offer, which always makes the experience more enjoyable. The service here has been consistently lovely, and it’s one of the main reasons I keep coming back. On top of that, their ciders are excellent- refreshing and flavorful every time. It’s truly a place you can relax, enjoy great drinks with fun company and know you’ll be well taken care of. Highly recommend!

Adorable Ambiance. Love the tables and table runners and especially the art. Delicious selection of cider and beer on draft. Do a flight!

Small, friendly taproom with a very fine selection of local ciders. Taps change regularly. Their own offerings are very solid and are complemented by the guest taps

Delicious ciders, both theirs and guest taps. They have a small food menu, but what they do they do very well - and feature other local/area makers like Don Froylan cheeses and Hot Mama salsas. But man, that Paloma with tequila and their hibiscus cider? Chef's kiss!!

Friendly service, tasty cider. Queso was weird...like it had been broken (grainy mouthfeel and not tasty.) Totally recommend the cider.

I had a Fresa Nino cider (strawberry with a hint of vanilla) and an order of chips and queso. The cider was so delicious, I asked if I could get some to-go but they only do growlers fills and I didn't happen to have one on me, to my misfortune. The chips and queso were yummy as well, the chips being hearty and the queso being creamy (though a little more spice would have been nice for me personally). Overall, a great visit and I will be back.

Yelp
I've been to the Salem location lots of times and already love this family run taproom. Their ciders are always amazing! I love that they have a good variety of both house made and other local cider companies. The cider flight is my favorite for that reason! Everyone who works at both taprooms are so friendly and you can tell it really is about family here. JJ served us the other evening and we had a great convo with him while we ordered. Just all around good chill vibes here. It is hard to beat the tacos from Azul's at their other location, though. The only reason they get a four out of five for me is because of this. We had the pretzel bites and two different quesadillas which were yummy but I guess nothing special. I do really like that they source a lot of their ingredients from other small businesses in Portland such as Three Sisters Nixtamel and Dos Hermanos Bakery. Overall, it's a great place to come after a busy day and unwind. Great cider, good food, chill vibes, and awesome service. Definitely a business worth supporting. Also check out the local art hanging on the walls!

Yelp
Finally came over for lunch during the Hawthorne street fair. It was hot so I didn't want to drink too much with the sun and heat. First time here so had four samples and really liked two of them and the other two were fine just not my favorite. I like that they offer a 10oz glass even though not on the screen. Wasn't thinking that the food would be anything special. I was nicely surprised. The chips were homemade and really good. I liked the different tortillas for the quesadillas and all high quality. They did let me put the toppings on the side and later I noticed they forgot the guacamole. I had the carnitas and enjoyed it along with the white cheese in the quesadilla. Next time I'll try the chicken. Saw the nachos someone else got and very generous. Good value here too. I think the carnitas quesadillas were $14 and were super filling. They sell some of the cider in cans or you can bring a growler. They also carry Ruzzo which is hard citrus which I recently discovered and really like. Hope they get more flavors.

Yelp
Enjoyed a couple cider flights here with a friend- great selection of ciders, and they have some other beverage options, as well as some tasty food (we liked the pretzel bites). Friendly staff, helpful sharing tips and information about the ciders.

Yelp
Cute little place. They were out of queso on our visit. All of the La Familia ciders I tried were good. We enjoyed a few flights. Not much for service considering there is little interaction...so cant say much for that. Decent little spot.

Yelp
Great opening Familia Cider blends Oregon cider and Mexican fresh-fruit drinks, inspired by traditional Aguas Frescas. First-generation Mexican immigrants, the Gonzalez family brought their passion for flavor and heritage to the US, working tirelessly in strawberry fields. José learned to make delicious Aguas Frescas at age ten, with cooking with love being key.

Yelp
Nice vibe inside and unique for a cider house. The flights weren't cheap but they were also substantial. The mixed drinks were also a nice touch. I've been here before when it was a different cider house but this was more comfortable. I'd stop back again.

Yelp
They are a cider joint but I'm happy they offer beer and other options. My friend is an exclusive cider drinker so when she asked to meet up here I was a bit hesitant as I do not enjoy cider. However, this place has something for everyone. Cute spot

Yelp
Used to be great when it was Portland Cider Co. We were the only people there on a Saturday at 4pm and waited 20 minutes for nachos. Out of two cider flights we only found two ciders that were enjoyable.

Yelp
Super chill spot 10/10 That's my new fav drink, service was amazing. Shout to my friend for showing me this new spot

Yelp
Place is ok - average food and average drinks and the most uncomfortable chairs of all time. Whomever decided on that must hate having people be comfortable. Probably will never come back unless i order out

Yelp
Great ciders and other drinks, but I keep coming back for the nachos--a simpler version than you see at a lot of places, but the housemade queso is so delicious that it doesn't need eleven other ingredients piled on top. One of the other reviewers complained that the queso is grainy--friend, that's a feature, not a bug! Excellent spot.

Yelp
We've been here a couple of times. Glad to see that it stayed a cider taproom. The flights are fun. Selection changes. You can really taste the fruit flavors coming through. Staff is friendly and helpful. Chips and salsa are great. Pretzel Bites are a great pair to the ciders. Games to play too.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this place for a while now and what a bummer the food was. The person at the counter was kind, the #3 Hibiscus cider was awesome! We were a group of 3 and the food came out separately, the last item a simple salad came out 21 minutes after everyone else got their "food." I ordered queso and chips, the queso was grainy and tasted like bland, grainy polenta. My friend got the street corn, which had zero flavor with a runny mayo/crema mixture, no cheese, no spices of any kind, everything bland. If you're hungry this isn't the place to go, but if you're into kick ass yummy ciders, then you won't be disappointed.
