29 Must-Eat Tacos in Austin

"Corn tortillas are the move at this West Congress gas station taco truck, especially with its chicken fajitas, for breakfast and lunch. Takeout orders can be placed in person; there are outdoor dine-in areas." - Nadia Chaudhury

Flor Xacali Review - East Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"There are two patios at , a back one that makes up about 90% of the dining area, and now a front one that’s home to Flor Xacali—a tasting menu experience made up of seven courses, plus an optional, low-intervention wine pairing. Spots are available by reservation only, with tickets going for $125/person (plus an optional $60 for the four-course wine pairing). " - Nicolai McCrary

You must eat at this place! The people are friendly and the flavors are awesome. Pro tip: dip in the red sauce then the green. It’s so good and I really felt taken care of. I love this place! I put 5 for atmosphere, even though it’s a food cart. I added that because the people are great and they’re great chefs too. I’m really satisfied with what I ate and I feel full and happy! It’s also in the same parking lot as a store (Hula Hut) that has a great selection of beers and wines. Also, the prices are really decent, particularly for the size of the tacos and other items!

Google
Best breakfast tacos and nicest people. Grandma is on the grill. You won't want to miss this stop!

Google
Not sure what’s up with the rave reviews but this place is not that great and really overpriced. The tacos are overly priced but cheaply made, cheap ingredients, halfheartedly scrambled and way overcooked, taco filling volume is much less than half as other places that charge equivalent prices. This is a cash only business currently charging $4.00 dollars per taco. Prices are not listed anywhere on their truck so who knows, they may charge differently for different reasons. All I can say is that this place is a rip off. Also, salsa not good, tastes like cheap generic Sriracha dumped in a plastic serving cup.

Google
Very solid tacos. The chicharron, beef fajita, and picadillo were standouts to me. The tortillas are good. A little more done than normal, which helps out when you have a wet or greasy taco. The salsa was alright. Totally serviceable, but nothing to make a special trip for. There were two of us and we split 6 tacos between us and both had plenty to eat. With tip lunch was $23 total and I feel like that's a solid deal these days. Service was friendly and relatively quick. There was a steady stream of people coming and going so this little taco truck seems to do some pretty solid business. Glad we stopped in for a bite and I will happily go again to try more of the menu!

Google
$3 each for all tacos. Flour tortillas are good. Slightly thick, but warmed up and pretty tasty. Salsas were very meh. Two are plenty for a meal. Chorizo and egg wasn't good. Almost no chorizo. Eggs weren't fluffy. Won't order again. Carnitas were dry, but not bad. A lot of meat. Carne Gisada was the winner. Really good. Will buy again. Moist. Tasty. Tons of meat.

Google
This food truck deserves a higher rating than the current 4.7. I was told the truck has been there 15 years and tacos originally cost $1.50. They are currently $3.50, and you can only pay with cash. That is the best price you'll find in Austin for tacos of this quality. Tax is included in the price, so you pay exactly $3.50 per taco. The service is fast and friendly.

Google
Really close to where I'm at, great food! Good folks! I'm very grateful!

Google
Believe the owners retired and is letting another family member run it. Sign isn’t up and different menu. Overcharged for tacos ($4), barely any egg, changed the salsas and did not cook the tortilla like they usually do. Overall not La Flor standards. Really sad day for South Austin! We will miss you Christian and your mother.

Yelp
The breakfast tacos are SO good. Whatever cheese they use is extra melty and the sausage/chorizo is crisp, which makes just such a yummy taco. PLUS they are only $3!

Yelp
Damn. Good. Tacos. Too delicious, couldn't pull the taco away from my mouth long enough to take a photo. Get in my belly! Best tacos I have found in Austin. They were out of everything but the carnitas and pastor but was still incredibly yummy. Much better and cheaper than Torchy's. Will be back again and again.

Yelp
Best bacon, egg and cheese I've had in my 10 years living in Austin. Friendly and fast service too!

Yelp
Hark! It was glorious. Did you eat what I ate? Come all ye faithful taco eaters - joyful and triumphant. Wow. This really put meaning into those Christmas Carols that I've been listening to. Glorious. Joyful. Triumphant. These tacos put meaning behind those words. I have several lists of food in the Austin area and La Flor is on four of those. Wow, some other folks must love it. Now, I do too. It is a very unassuming manger, I mean food truck, in an obscure part of the city. But the food is truly magical, sublime, festive. I had the carnitas taco and the polo/chicken. I wish I had taken pictures. They truly are the best I've had in Austin. There's a reason that these make so many food lists. They are flavorful. They come on fresh, hand made tortillas, unique flavor, and dirt cheap. These are what put taco trucks onto the map and it stays that way. Joy to the world! The tacos have come.

Lisa M.

Yelp
Delicious and priced right. The tortillas are just the best. And even the simple cheese quesadilla is perfection. I love having this spot in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
Cheap ($2 a taco) and delicious. The tortillas are thick and pretty large. I like to go for the breakfast tacos because they are pretty customizable but their steak, carnitas and chicken are all great too. Get bacon in your breakfast tacos - it comes thick crunchy bits, you won't be disappointed. They also serve quesadillas and gorditas if you want something other than tacos.
google avatar

Shema E.

Yelp
Very good food. The flour tortilla is not home made which makes them sweaty and soggy from heat of food which is normal but good flavor. Breakfast tacos are well made lots of flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
the best fajita tacos and the best handmade tortillas. I recommend you stop by and try you will not regret

Yelp
My god!!!! this place makes the best fijita tacos or what??? We eat here almost every day. My favorite is the fajita taco. Make sure you ask for the grilled peppers (They can be extremely hot). If you are looking some great tacos in town this place is the best!!! BTW, this place is called "La Flor" not La flour!!!
google avatar

Yelp
These are the tacos my grandma used to make me on Sunday mornings. Homemade carnitas, hand-cut papas and those hand-rolled flour tortillas! If for nothing else, go for the tortillas. Unlike anything you can find in Austin. Check out the menu I posted for the different types of tacos. They're out of some of the meats later in the day, so keep an open mind. They're also super accommodating, like making me a quesadilla and huevos a la mexicana when they're not even on the menu. Best part? $2 tacos, no matter what you order.
google avatar

Sandeep G.

Yelp
La Flor is in the top tier of the Austin taco totem pole. If you're nearby when they're open (breakfast and lunch only), you better get your taco on. Handmade corn and flour tortillas (I usually stalk my tacos on corn tortillas, but here, I get both because they actually do wheat flour justice). The tortillas are huge, so the tacos are a great value as well.
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
Best breakfast tacos in Austin, hands down. The tortillas are amazing- thick, chewy, and hot. The food is authentic, and the service is great. I truly feel like I found a hidden gem with La Flor!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a little lad with my old man right before we went to work and I can say these are some damn good breakfast tacos. Not only do they make their own homemade tortillas, but also have great tasting food. Its not all just tacos, you can grab yourself a gordita with whatever filling you want but you can also pair it with a nice atole.Mi paisas si quieren un buen Lonche,la Flor es el lugar.
google avatar

Hong L.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast tacos for a good price. The flour tortillas were handmade, soft, and slightly chewy. We got one taco with bacon, sausage and eggs (savory) and the other with potato, eggs, sausage and beans (filling). If you want a hearty meal, get two tacos! Don't forget the sauce!

Jordan H.

Yelp
Best breakfast tacos in Austin, which means they just might be the best breakfast tacos in all of existence. The tacos are two dollars each, and they let you mix ingredients and get whatever you want on a flour or corn tortilla. The corn tortillas are incredible and the flour tortillas are good as well. Everything is perfectly cooked and the red and green salsa are both flavorful and just the right amount of spicy. I can't recommend the corn tortillas enough, they compare favorably to many of the higher end Mexican restaurants in Austin.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Their food here is authentic Mexican! U won't regret trying this place! My favorite is the quesadilla and all their tortillas are homemade!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Another reviewer said this was a great place even for vegetarian tacos. No, it is not! BE AWARE, they cook EVERYTHING IN LARD! Nothing on the menu can be made vegetarian because it is all made with lard. No bueno. As a vegetarian, I am used to having to avoid certain menu items like beans or rice which are more often than not made with lard, bacon, chicken stock, or other animal products. This is usually no big deal because I can order an egg, potato, nopale taco or whatever other veggie options a place offers. But you can't do that at La Flor since everything is cooked in lard and they don't offer a vegetarian-friendly alternative. Bummer. But there are plenty of other yummy taco places in Austin to choose from.

Stephanie V.

Yelp
The corn tortillas were tasty but a little thick for me. They don't scramble the eggs fluffy and the sausage was dry and too salty. But my bean egg and cheese taco was pretty good. The tortillas are so large they should fill em a little bit more. But all in all a decent taco if you're passing by and hungry.

Yelp
I've been coming here ever since i was a kid, im 26 now. I basically grew up on this taco truck. Its amazing food. Home made corn tortillas. The food is fresh. You can call in orders. You can sit at the picnic tables on beautiful days. You definitely have to gove it a shot when your in the neighborhood!

Paul D.

Yelp
Christian and his mom make the best breakfast tacos in Austin. There's not even a close 2nd. Their homemade corn tortillas are the perfect thickness and are never dry. The service is always great.

Yelp
If you find yourself driving south on congress it before you get to staaney there is La flour. This is one of those taco shacks. It is permantly located in a small trailer next to the Stop and Shop. Dont let the apperance fool you they have some great food. The breakfast tacos are warm and filling and at $1.50 you cant beat it. I say the bacon egg and cheese is my favorite. As for Lunch you can get many different items from tacos to tortas all ranging from $1.50 - $3.00. My favorite is the Carnitas Torta. It has tender pork on a bolio roll with letttuce, tomatoes, jalepenoes, refreind beans, onionds and sour cream. If you get there after 2pm they will be out of the carnitas so stop by early. If you find yourself driving south on congress it

Yelp
Fairly solid cheap taco trailer. Their basic breakfast taco, which for my purposes is bacon/egg/cheese, is good and cheap, as it should be, and comes on a decent tortilla. Good salsa, though it's not quite spicy enough for me. Their tortas are also worth investigating. They somewhat atypically come with refried beans in addition to your normal fillings (lettuce, sour cream, jalapeños). Carnitas is a good bet if you're torn between meats. A breakfast taco and a torta is a grand total of $6. They're in the Stop and Shop parking lot about midway between Stassney and St Elmo on S 1st, which is a somewhat odd location but at least is fairly convenient for me. They're open for breakfast and lunch only, but they serve breakfast stuff at lunch too, the way that God intended.

Yelp
So I had my reservations eating at this place...located outside of a corner store that's sole purpose is to sell cigarettes, lotto tickets and booze, and having a handwritten menu in a stand that looks hand built, it just looked seedy to me. However this place has probably the best breakfast taco in Austin, certainly the best that I've had! 2$ is a great deal; these tacos will fill you until dinner. Tortillas taste handmade, perfectly scrambled eggs with a little pico, skillet potatoes, salty mexican bacon and ooey gooey cheese...mmm. I live within walking distance, I can see myself coming here on a weekly basis. Don't waste your money at some taco cabana or some poorly made donut shop tacos.

Yelp
I used to stop by here somewhat rarely on the off-chance that I was early to work. Since then, I've started working from home. Among other things, this means I can go days without wearing pants, assuming I don't want to go out and get things like food. Some days, La Flor is the only reason I wear pants.

Yelp
Great tacos from a little convenience store trailer. $2 each for any taco on the menu, breakfast or lunch. The green salsa is spicier than the red salsa but not too spicy. Definitely going back tomorrow.
google avatar

Ted R.

Yelp
Loved it! Blogged about it! Definitely adding this to my list of go-to taco spots! https://tacososcuros.wordpress.com/2017/07/19/completely-flord/

Yelp
Five barks for real! You gotta order the Egg, Nopal, and cheese. I can't do bacon anymore because I don't eat mammals - peace to my girl Okja. Can't go wrong but they use some strong cleaner on the counter you can smell 20 feet away. Worth the fumes... Petey out.
google avatar

Yelp
I'll take the pepsi challenge with any taco truck against La Flor tacos. You can taste the love in every taco.

David O.

Yelp
Carnitas Taco good, but a bit dry. Corn tortillas excellent with Guisada, meat very tender. Piccadilla with potatoes on flour tortillas was my favorite! For $2 a taco you can't go wrong here. Salsa is bit on the mild side for me, but tasty. Limited seating, but big lot, more seating would be great, food truck could also use some sprucing up, public bus stop next to truck, but other than that well worth the stop!

Yelp
My favorite and I know a lot of the taco stands in town! The staff are super - they seem genuinely happy and the tacos are great, cheap, and delicious.... the hot sauce, which is a big part of my judging mechanism is excellent :) the tacos are homemade, and they spice them with just the right amount of extra love and cilantro!

Yelp
It's easy to miss La Flor, as it's a food truck tucked away in the corner of a parking lot next to a Hula Hu convenience store on South First. But if you want to have the best breakfast taco in Austin, make sure you don't miss it. I've lived in Austin since 1986, and I've eaten a lot (really -- a LOT) of breakfast tacos. They're ubiquitous around here. And La Flor has the best breakfast tacos. Bar none. Really, there isn't even any competition. They make them on a grill, which you can see while you're ordering. I almost always get the bacon, egg, and cheese. They brown a good size, really delicious tortilla, fry what looks like a whole egg, put it in there with some chunky bits of bacon and the tastiest cheese you could want, and serve it to you REALLY hot. I top it off with some of their (somewhat spicy) green sauce and -- well -- it's breakfast heaven. They have a (somewhat spicy) red sauce you can put on there as well, if you prefer, and if you're really lucky, they'll serve you a taco with a double tortilla. In fact, that seems to happen whenever I order two or more tacos -- one's got a double tortilla, and because of that magic grill, it tastes doubly delicious. And they don't just serve tacos -- they'll make you burritos, Gorditas, whatever you want. And the best part? $2 each. You can't get this kind of value, for the quality or the price, anywhere else in Austin. They're open Monday through Saturday (no Sundays) until 2:00 pm, serving breakfast and lunch. If you haven't been, go. You will NOT be disappointed.
google avatar

Travis R.

Yelp
If you're looking for fast, affordable, and delicious, this is the place. There are a couple picnic tables, but you're probably better off getting it to go (tables are in the Texas sun). Tacos are cheap at only $2 a piece (cash only I think). Two should be good for most people, three if you're famished or just eat a lot. The handmade tortillas have a reputation for a reason. Both flour and corn were delicious and while I normally favor flour, I enjoyed their corn more. The Desebrada was my favorite of what I tried, and I will certainly be back here to explore more of the menu!
google avatar

Rachael S.

Yelp
DELICIOUS, cheap tacos that do not disappoint. I find myself craving/comparing La Flor's tacos when I'm at a sit-down Mexican restaurant and I think that says a lot. Cash only.
google avatar

Teri R.

Yelp
I live right around the corner, but I would definitely make a special trip if I didn't. Bistec Taco. With capital letters. What do they do to them that makes them so good? Little strips of marinated beef cooked on a flat top until some bits are crispy while others are tender, topped with chopped onion and cilantro on a well grilled tortilla. This simple-sounding taco is a complex flavor explosion that I am unable to explain. Good god, they're even good cold.
google avatar

Tom U.

Yelp
Simply put, amazing breakfast tacos. And cheap too, $2 each, whatever you put on them. The nopales and eggs are especially good. Usually pretty busy on the weekend, but worth the wait. You can save a little time if you phone in your order.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
I stopped here for a quick bite to eat while traveling. I looked them up after they were featured in the southern living magazine in the fall. They are a hole in the wall place, but after you eat there you won't forget it. Homemade corn tortillas are delicious. I purchased nopal with cheese and fajita tacos for my family. After leaving I regretted not buying more my boys are picky and the wanted more. Thank you for providing great service, at great prices and awesome service. I will be back.
google avatar

Daniella C.

Yelp
It's amazing. The tacos are super cheap and taste awesome, the best flour tortillas.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service, and the food is good but not great. A solid choice for when San Juanita's at Congress and Stassney is on vacation.
google avatar

J B.

Yelp
I second the carnitas torta! Yummy! I love taco trailers...
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Best breakfast tacos in town, I live way north but try to make it down at least once a month. Have driven from 4 points just for the homemade corn tortillas also!
google avatar

Graham C.

Yelp
I've lived in this neighborhood for 7 years. We are loyal customers to La Flor. I have their number on my phone. *ring ring* "Bueno!" "Hey it's Graham from down the street" "OH HEY!! - How many tacos today?"... and after that it's just a matter of establishing how many Al Pastor or egg, bacon & cheese are necessary. Best Al Pastor in town. Hands down!
google avatar

Chazz B.

Yelp
I agree with Lazy S that these are about the best tacos you can get, even for the vegan/vegetarian. I'm convinced it's the best salsa in town (both red and green, the red is my personal favorite though) and the home made from the ground up taste is just great. And absolutely a great way to go on the cheap. I always get potato bean and tomato. Everyone I have taken there whether veg or not has given it great praise and I'm glad to live so close to my favorite south Austin food. :0

Yelp
Highly underrated! Delicious, fresh, filling tacos are the bomb! Seriously, their tortillas are to die for. Everything is made fresh, but it never takes them long to create the deliciousness. There can be a language barrier, at times, but it gives me a chance to practice my Spanish! Love this place!
