The Best Arepas In Los Angeles

"La Fonda Antioqueña is one of those places best saved for a lazy Saturday when your body craves something warm, filling, and preferably fried to power you through. The portions at this East Hollywood spot are very generous, to say the least, and their white corn arepas, which can be a side dish or part of an entree, come nicely soft and charred on both sides for some great color. We love them on their own with just butter and slices of soft cheese, but outright demand them with a heaping plate of bandeja paisa. This dish comes with a mound of white rice, pinto beans, one very large steak, a long slice of crispy pork crackling, fried plantains, avocado, a fried egg, and (wait for it) a soft arepa to help scoop everything up. It’s one of those impressive displays of food that leave us wondering where to even begin, but we always return to the chewy arepa to dip into the warm beans or runny egg yolks. " - sylvio martins

La Fonda Antioqueña - Review - East Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"La Fonda Antioqueña is one of those places best saved for a lazy Saturday when your body craves something warm, filling, and preferably fried to power you through. The portions at this East Hollywood spot are very generous, to say the least, and their white corn arepas, which can be a side dish or part of an entree, come nicely soft and charred on both sides. Food Rundown Bandeja Paisa We love the huge chicharron that’s deep-fried until ultra-crispy and are fans of the steak that’s well seasoned and nicely charred. But the plantains and fried egg are what really make this plate so indulgent, and we can’t help but mop up the runny yolk and beans with the chewy white corn arepa. There’s also rice and pinto beans if the rest of the platter wasn’t enough. Chicharron This massive, scored chicharron is very impressive looking with its crackly edges and little fried pockets of buttery fat that contrast with the layer of meat that resembles salty jerky. Spritz some lemon on top for an acidic kick that brightens everything up. Arepas La Fonda’s simple white corn arepas are best used for dipping into beans or other saucy menu items between bites. We love these as a side dish or as something to snack on before diving into wedges of crispy chicharron. Empanadas These corn-based empanadas are good as is, but the vinegary green onion salsa on the side is what takes them to the next level. The dough’s natural sweetness and the ground beef filling really pop the moment they receive a spritz of lemon and a generous dousing of that excellent salsa verde." - Sylvio Martins

12 Delicious Places to Get Golden Brown Empanadas in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"A trip to La Fonda Antioqueña usually entails digging into their delicious bandeja paisa with the usual fixings and some very soft Colombian empanadas. These cornmeal pies are a nice balance between sweet and savory and are buttery smooth on the inside after receiving a quick fry. The beef filling is well seasoned and tastes even better with a spritz of lemon." - Sylvio Martins

Hands down my family and love the food, EVERYTHING is delicious. My mom and I were instantly transported to my grandma's cooking (she is no longer with us). The service is amazing and fast.

I had an amazing experience at this Colombian restaurant! The empanadas were absolutely perfect—crispy on the outside and bursting with flavor inside. The chicken with rice was cooked to perfection, seasoned beautifully, and paired so well with the refreshing soda. Every bite felt like a taste of Colombia. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was friendly and attentive. I’ll definitely be back to try more of their menu. Highly recommended!

Google
I used to love this place back when it was in the old location. However, things have change since then. Today I had the “churrasco” and realized that the cutting board had mold. The empanadas in my opinion had no flavor. I found “Antojitos Colombianos” in San Diego and wow! Now there is no going back. I think is my last time coming here. However, I hope things get better back again.

Review update: Fonda Antioqueña always delivers. Today I wanted something different so I ordered the most incredible dish. It’s better than the Bandeja Paisa even. It’s called Sobrebarriga al Horno I think. It’s incredibly seasoned and low-fat. It’s basically cooked in an oven. It includes an arepa, plantain, potato, some veggies and beans and rice. God I love their rice! Im from Tierra caliente and it’s just like my mom’s white rice! Perfect yucca and plantains! Everything is so good. The server was this traditional Latino gentleman type. Very polite but he can be uptight at times. Let’s just say there’s a bit of Latino friction going on. He does a really great job until he gets uptight lol. The servers work well as a team. The youngest server is amazing! Great eye contact and anticipation. I highly recommend this place! Great food and typical music! I’ve been here a handful of times and it always delivers. Each time I have ordered a platter that features several popular dishes from Colombia. It has an arepa, fried plantains, rice, beans, chicharron, Colombian chorizo and carne asada. It is best to share it because it has a lot of food. I was so hungry I forgot to snap a pic but I did get a pic of my guanabana drink. The atmosphere is nice. They play lively tropical music. There’s limited parking around the restaurant and also meter parking.

Google
Place is magically delicious. The frijoles, fried plantains and chicharron was my favorite 10/10 will be back again especially since they had generous portions.

Google
It was our first time eating Colombian food. We saw the other customers' dishes and realized that the portions were pretty large. Since we are small eaters, we decided to share one serving and an empanada for two people. We are grateful that the waiter accepted our choice without any complaint. The food tasted very simple and delicious. I would bring my friends who have never tried Colombian food.

Google
Awesome place with cool owners and great food. The churrasco is right up there with Korean BBQ. A lot of tasty meat.

Yelp
The restaurant was cozy and smelled like my abuelita's kitchen! The food was so authentic. It Tasted amazing!

Yelp
It is one of the few Colombian restaurants in the LA area, and it is not the best nor the worst. The flavors want to be there but it will never taste as the original. I think it is a little overpriced, maybe because of the area where it's located. The service is good but it could be better, a little more attention. The place is nice and clean, except the parking lot, extremely limited and tight.
google avatar

Juel A.

Yelp
Authentic Colombian food! Great service and food is so delicious. They have a great menu and their drinks are made fresh. I love that they have big portions because you enjoy more food but you can share some of their bigger plates. For example the bandeja paisa.

Yelp
Family owned authentic Columbian restaurant with huge portions and friendly staff. Probably the best empanada I have ever tasted. They close early so check the hours.

Joana R.

Yelp
La comida no es buena, es seca, imitación de comida colombiana, el servicio es malo y es súper costoso para la calidad de la comida que sirven. No recomiendo este lugar

Samira B.

Yelp
Terrible. I used to eat here all the time and as a Colombian it's hard to find good Colombian restaurants in LA. Unfortunately the food quality went down tremendously. I ordered a soup from DoorDash and when I received it, it was 100% spoiled. The fact that they can send that and not do a quality check before sending out food is very disappointing. Thankfully I was able to notice the rancid smell before eating it and double checked and tasted it just to make sure it was definitely bad. I also ordered empanadas that are usually my favorite and the meat was so dry . Its pretty sad bc they are normally so good but they were terrible . Que pesar y mal representación de la comida Colombia
google avatar

Christian H.

Yelp
As a Colombian, the food is not that great. A bit dry. Also every-time i order pandebonos (same amount) the bill is always different... it never adds up no matter how many times i get the same thing.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
This place is nothing like what it used to be prices have gone up to high and the dishes portions went to small plus the waitress always in a bad mood when you call to get food to go they give you a bad attitude and expect to get tipped for no service I used to love it back then when everyone was so friendly and food portions not so greedy

Lidy P.

Yelp
la comida que pedi empanadas eran empanadas de carne molida sin nada de sabor y harina toda aguada, el chorizo recalentado y duro papas criollas sin lavar y quemadas y podridas de adentro..terrible presentación colombiana pienso que cambiaron los dueños

Sonia S.

Yelp
Excellent food delicious! I have been in different Colombian restaurants, but this is the best of LA

Lorena G.

Yelp
La peor comida colombiana que he probado, honestamente da pena que este lugar haga quedar nuestra comida colombiana tan mal.

Brenda A.

Yelp
This place used to be good and service was great but my last 2 experiences were really bad. They took a long time to take our order and never brought silverware until I got up and grab my own. Keep an eye on your check/receipt they hand write everything and include the tip without explaining they already added the gratuity. If you pay with a debit or credit card they print a receipt with a space for more tip.

Yelp
The food was absolutely and perfectly authentic! I felt like I was back in Colombia, and the service was so friendly! The chef came out and even checked in on us to make sure we were happy. This place has been in the same location for the last 30 + years and I heard about it from word of mouth. The atmosphere is actually like so many restaurants in Colombia, not fancy but the furniture is strong and yes, it could probably use some remodeling but in a way it just adds to the authentic, no frills or pretentious vibes. If you haven't tried Colombian food, you will be pleasantly surprised, and frankly I don't understand why there aren't more Colombian restaurants in L.A.. I tried the few others in Los Angeles, and this place is the best representation of the cuisine that I have come across. Recommend the empanadas, pastel de yucca (amazing!!) sancocho de pescado (a country style fish soup) , the chicharrón, you should also try the fresh fruit juices, and if you have room definitely the flan! They have a huge selection of dishes and even vegetarian and vegan friendly options.

Yelp
I ate here 7 years ago on a trip to LA. I am reviewing it today because it showed up on my Facebook feed and I want to remember it for my next visit to LA.
google avatar

Maritza G.

Yelp
I can cook really good Colombian food but what I can't cook I come here to satisfy my cravings because it's the best!!!
google avatar

Elsa M.

Yelp
Excellent service, very cordial and kind people, always asking if I needed anything. Service was super fast and the food was like I was back in my hometown Colombia. The churrasco is what I ordered, the steak was super tasty, ordered it medium rare and it was cooked right. La papa criolla perfecta crunchy outside yummy Huuuuge portion! Definitely recommended by me, a Colombian lady
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
My wife is Colombian so I've been to a few Colombian restaurants, this is the best one in LA
google avatar

Gabby C.

Yelp
This review is long due. I have been a customer for soooo long. The food and service never disappoints. Authentic Colombian food. They don't have food from a different country ! I recently decided to check out a different Colombian restaurant because this restaurant closes at 7pm. This other restaurant has Mexican food and food from other countries. This is how you know is not authentic. Anyway give this restaurant a chance, you won't regret it. Been a customer for about 15+ years and is great great food!

Harold Z.

Yelp
Sorry to mention, i went this morning hoping to have a great dish but it was mot like that, i had mine to go, big mistake, ordered mondongo, it was very salty, didn't have anything but the broth and the meat (stomach), very low quality, what a waste of my time and money...
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
This place has the best food ever!! It's Colombian food with all the trimmings. The presentation of the food is beautiful, family style portions!! Staff is great, family owned. I think about this food all the time
google avatar

Melany M.

Yelp
The most authentic Colombian place in LA. You must get La bandeja paisa, it will never disappoint!

Dilenia A.

Yelp
So happy that I found a Colombian restaurant like back home in NY! The hospitality, setup and waiter service, just like Queens, NY. Finally found a place to remind me of "home", I will definitely keep coming here. Food was delish, we had their signature empanadas and morcilla; for dinner I had the churrasco, my fiancé had the Milanesa, and then of course the Colombian coffee to finish off our meal! We left completely stuffed and satisfied!!! Our new place, woohoo!

Fabian M. P.

Yelp
Pésima atención demorada y la sra que atiende es pésima , grosera y petulante... La comida es buena solo falta buena atención , más amabilidad , se les olvida de dónde vienen ?
google avatar

Miles S.

Yelp
There's a certain level of tension sitting at a new restaurant awaiting the food. As we talk, warmth spills through the atmosphere. Warn down yellow walls illuminate the dining room as Colombian music echoes from the kitchen muffling chefs yelling order audibles back and forth. We wait. . Broth tip toes up to the edge of the left side of the bowl rim as Sancocho De Res is placed gently across from me at the table. The tender beef seamlessly loses structure as a fork softly presses down on it separating it from the bone. Smiles erupt. . A fish that had seen many a better day is placed in front of me. Totally fried, to a vegan it could be an almost daunting sight. Crisp and still sizzling, with incisions to separate the bark like char from the soothing glistening inside flesh. A whole life lived as a fish ends today and satisfies any sense of hunger lingering in my mind. The remnants look like a CSI sketch as only bones are left on the plate. I'll be back. Fasho. Stay Eatin.

Yelp
There is not many choices when it comes to Colombian restaurants in Los Angeles. There is Columbian food from different regions and the taste is different, or they are fusion. So how do we know which is a good one? This columbian food is amazing. The way they make their empanadas are fantastic. Crispy and light. And I love getting "the holy moly" dish! It is enough for two and it has everything! From steak, fried pork, sausage, arepas, beans, rice, and oooo soo yummy! I have tried all the Colombian restaurants in the LA area, and I can say this is the best one! It is a small family owned and full of delicious food!
google avatar

Giovanni O.

Yelp
Overrated... Pretentious would be a better word. Service was lacking and food... well I've had better. Not worth it really. Better off making it yourself.
google avatar

Beatriz B.

Yelp
Me decepcionó! la comida no tenía ningún sabor ni las empanadas ni el chocolate que triste representación para los paisas!!.
google avatar

Yovy D.

Yelp
So far! So good - I don't know about you not sure what it was... but man I've been craving Colombian food - I think it was because I've been watching the movie "Encanto!
google avatar

Johnny G.

Yelp
Enjoyed a hearty and extra flavorful first Colombian meal. Everything we had was delicious. I enjoyed the Sobrebarriga en Salsa - thankfully not spicy, just full of a bunch of flavor. My bud enjoyed the Bandeja Paisa. The plates were served with juicy beans and a side of rice. We had the Brevas con Arequipe (figs with dulce de leche). they were good to try, but not our thing. I do recommend trying them, though. Nice place, there is parking the back. I'm looking forward to returning and trying more.
google avatar

Rodrigo G.

Yelp
Ehhhh ave María pues, una Bandeja Paisa, o solo el "ají" lo mejor que he probado de comida colombiana en Los Angeles. It feels like you are at yours best friends house and they're family is taking care of you. No alcohol, no problem. Un refresco de guaraná lo cura todo. Tengo que regresar por un sancocho pues
google avatar

Alejandra D.

Yelp
Deliciosa comida, muy buen servicio.... Muy amables.. las empanadas muy sabrosas. Los frescos de mango estan muy deliciosos
google avatar

Ilse A.

Yelp
Great food ! Best Colombian food I had in L.A. nice portions! The Service was excellent , very accomodating and pleasant . Ambiance was nice s d family oriented.

Catalina P.

Yelp
google avatar

Van F.

Yelp
The empanadas and maracuya smoothie have always been my favorite! They have parking Family owned Authentic Colombian food
google avatar

James ..

Yelp
One of the best Colombian places that Iv tried around this area. It's pretty big inside and there is parking behind the restaurant which is nice in that area. I always get the bandeja paisa with the amazing fat free chicharrón ;) some places use ground beef but this place goes with skirt steak and it's pretty good and filling. The empanadas are good, no their great! And the accompanying ahi sauce is they have all the common things you would find in a Colombian restaurant as well. The jugos naturales are so good too. Tip- order a colombiana (soda) and a beer and mix half a beer and half the soda (mix to your likings) and it's amazing. They call it refajo in Colombia, but I didn't see it on the menu. Try it:)

Juanita M.

Yelp
Delicious food and large portions. FYI they do not serve any alcoholic beverages, but they do have a large selection of juices and some sodas available :) I would definitely go back
google avatar

Carolyn O.

Yelp
I've been coming here since I was a kid as a proud Colombian. The quality and taste of the food has diminished over the years, but I got some take out today and was so disappointed that they no longer have buñuelos (a Colombian staple), obleas, and their arequipe was DISGUSTING!! It's always been my favorite Colombian dessert since I was a child. They used to sell it in the Alpina containers, but now they just put it in a styrofoam cup. I didn't love that, but it was totally fine as long as I got my arequipe. It was part chunky, part watery, and sour! It was as if it was homemade and the dairy had gone bad! I really hope I don't get good poisoning after tasting that. It was so nasty I had to throw it away. The savory food was good. I got pan de bonos, empanadas, and pasteles de yucca. The ahi was also good. Last thing I'll mention is the service. The lady who checked me out, didn't smile, didn't thank me for my order, looked annoyed by my presence, and whenever she gave me the receipt to sign, she walked away without saying goodbye out thank you, and didn't even give me a pen. There was no pen to be found, so I dug in my bag to find my own. Really disappointing experience. I think it's time to try other Colombian restaurants. They lost my loyalty after today's experience.

Yelp
So much good Colombian food for a great price. Friendly attentive staff. Big portions. Decorated with a lot of authentic items and usually a soccer game on the tv. Here are a few items to try.

Guido A.

Yelp
Cambiaron de cocinero se les fue al suelo todo - la comida pésima - tristeza porque he sido cliente + de 20 años!

Selina L.

Yelp
Our favorite Colombian spot! Their portions are so worth the price and empanadas are a must have We drive all the way from the IE its so worth it !! Must try!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I do not recommend this restaurant. My husband is from Colombia and says that they should call this imitation Colombian food. I ordered a tamal and some empanadas. The tamal was served with rice, avocado and an arepa. The arepa needed salt. The tamal was large and dry. There was no sauce and the beef was was very dry and lacked seasoning. Their empanadas are made with ground beef and did not contain potato. The aji did not save the empanadas as that was lacking as well. They do have Colombiana, Postobon, and Pony Malta, which is good.

Emily C.

Yelp
The food is good, though the empanadas could be better. I do like the calentado and fried plantains.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
If you were to look at it from the street it really wouldn't call your attention. Every time my husband takes me and we've been there a couple of times I'm always looking for a bigger building. This place is the best place I eat in it in a very long time. This is one that we hold onto for anniversaries or birthdays. The food is delicious it's always hot cooked well the waiter is the best. He's attentive he's polite he pays attention to what you might need or want. I will always definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a good meal in a nice quiet place.
google avatar

Armando S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious Columbian food. We ordered the steak with chimichurri sauce and some chicharrón. Also had the guava drink and it was tasty. Definitely going back.

Yelp

google avatar

Lizbeth L.

Yelp
This spot is my husband's favorite for Colombian food. As a Colombian, he says this is the closest you can get to authentic in the LA. I agree! The food is amazingly good. But you gotta try the pan de bonos! That's the true gem of La Fonda Antioqueña!
google avatar

Andre V.

Yelp
Lol had a friend just call me to say they saw my review as they were about to leave one regarding the terrible experience this place is. Another bad experience in the books lol.

Yelp
Their meat empanadas are everything just try them Have a Colombiana with them promise you'll come back
