Where To Eat In The Hamptons With A Big Group

"Just off the highway in Amagansett, La Fondita is a useful taco spot to have in your back pocket when your hangry friends are all ignoring each other and need some sustenance to stop the mindless scrolling. Know this is a grab-some-tacos-and-sit-at-picnic-tables situation and not a big-dinner-before-a-night-out destination. However, you can order cocktails from neighboring sibling restaurant Coche Comedor and camp out by the fire pit for a smaller group gathering. La Fondita also offers big orders to go, and with some cans of beer from Brent’s General Store nearby, you can book it to the beach for an impromptu party. 5 Best Day Trips from New York City | Condé Nast Traveler

"It's a seasonally-open taco shack (albeit one brought to you by the restaurateurs behind the chic Nick and Toni's ) off the highway in Amagansett, with reggaeton on the stereo, technicolor picnic tables on the grass outside, and guacamole served in little plastic tubs. There's a full menu of tortas, burrito bowls, salads, and tostadas, but tacos are the way to go. Get some chips and guac to start, then a few Baja-style fish tacos, chicken tingas, and al pastors. Wash it down with Jarritos or a Modelo." - Alex Van Buren, Devra Ferst, Andrea Whittle

Sitting outside at the picnic tables post beach is the best. Always order ahead online. Fish burrito and carnitas tacos are amazing. 🌮

Google
Real deal Mexican food! Fresh, delicious and very casual. I usually take-out but there are picnic tables to eat at there. Love their tortilla soup and my favorite is the Fondita salad! Tacos, burritos, all kinds of deliciousness!

Alyssa D.

Google
Shrimp burrito was very good and not at all wet or greasy. Salad was little on the bland side but had a nice amount of avocado in there. They had a cute outdoor picnic bench area. Would come back again!

Google
Been coming here for over 12 years and it’s a complete dump now, food sucks and the guy working the counter is a huge A hole, messed up my order twice and argued with me because he jacked it up. Loved this place for years but now it’s a grumpy dump….. sad sad sad A+ to the kitchen Chef who resolved the issue! Spreading the word and never coming back.

Google
great food, building and interior are very cute, but traffic can be heard and seen from seating, i might suggest more planting around seating area

Michelle Fox

Google
Absolutely. Delicious!! Whole snapper was amazing. Mofongo was authentic and so wonderfully garlicky. But the winner of the meal was the flan. Oh and the mojito!! The red beans and rice could be a meal on their own.

Luis Mendez

Google
Very good selection of tacos & tortas (sandwiches). They have seasonal aguas frescas as well, very refreshing.

Google
La Fondita is our absolute favorite casual Mexican restaurant in the Hamptons. Order food at the counter and then sit outside on the picnic tables. Everything is great.

Yelp
Went here for the first time (for a real meal) a couple days ago. It was quite tasty. I got the carnitas burrito bowl, also tried--my party's dishes--the supreme nachos, steak burrito, and a chicken taco. I also had the watermelon juice which was delicious; so was the lemonade. Everything was very good, some of the best Mexican I have had out east. The wait was about 10 minutes and we sat at one of the picnic tables outside. It was very chill and casual. I would return and recommend.

Yelp
Tasty modern Mexican in the hamptons. Decent prices, fresh food. We loved the homemade salsas for the tacos. Service was fast and friendly. Not really a dine in spot, unless you want to sit outside.

Yelp
They don't speak English. They messed up the order and charged over $75 for lunch They left out the chicken in the chicken fajitas We ask for no beans in the nachos and what did we get? beans! and no! cheese! Horrible experience I'll never go back there again.

Amy G.

Yelp
We ordered take out from here one night and ordered the fondita salad with steak. the woman on the phone repeated it to us but then did not enter it in the system so I got my salad without steak. we called to see if we can get a new salad or the steak on the side. she then proceeded to tell us that to get the steak we had to get there in 1-5 minutes(we live 10 minutes away) and on top of that we had to pay for a small portion of steak that she forgot to enter into the system. we had to pay for her mistake that was completely ridiculous! of course we said no that I didn't want it anymore overall the Customer service here is just completely horrible.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican spot!! Amazing value, amazing quality what else would you expect if Nick and Toni's opened a taco spot???? This place is Amazing!!!

Yelp
I am total fan of La Fondita. I was vacationing in the Hamptons visiting family and my husband and I ventured out to try a few food places and see some sites on our own. This place was on the list for sure. I've been a fan of Ina Garten and her friend Joe Realmuto for many years. My cousin and his girlfriend had nothing but nice things to say about Nick and Toni's as well. Knowing La Fondita is part of the same restaurant group had me wanting to go here as well. They are located right off Montauk HWY in the heart of Amagansett. The staff is super friendly and the place looks like a little taco stand which is great. They have plenty of vegetarian options (with some that can be made vegan if you ask) and more than enough food on their menu in general. We ordered a few things to try: - 2 chayote tacos (vegetarian taco with smoked roasted vegetables - we got an extra at no charge!) - 2 black bean and cheese tacos - 1 order of chayote quesadilla (they gave us an extra at no charge!) - 1 order guac/chips - 1 order esquites (think corn salsa but so delicious) - 1 lime popsicle -- my husband is a huge lime fan and said this was absolutely delicious, tart and refreshing since it was pretty humid and hot that day. We enjoyed our food outside on umbrella/picnic tables and the food was fresh, tortillas you could tell were made to order and they have an array of hot sauces, fresh salsas, verdes, etc to top your food! I'm not sure why other reviewers said this place was expensive. It was actually cheaper than the "boutique" taco place here in Ann Arbor, so we were very pleased with the prices we paid for the food received. I highly recommend this stop as you explore The Hamptons!

Lucas B.

Yelp
If they get your order right, and thats a big if, expect mediocre food at dummy prices. And whats their response to everyone saying this place is getting worse each year? They get rid of the free water pitcher...
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
Tried and true Hamptons classic. Can be a bit slow to prepare food but I just order online and pick it up accordingly. I always get the guacamole, tortilla soup and shrimp burrito. I love all their homemade salsas! Perfect take out option to eat on the beach or at home.

S. K.

Yelp
For food, this is good standby-easy to order online and pickup. The carnitas tacos and the fish burrito bowl are great and filling. Tacos are for 1. Burrito bowl could be for 1 very hungry person or 2 less hungry people.

Ida T.

Yelp
Love La Fondita, the food is fresh, tasty & always reliable. It is a take out joint with picnic tables around it & excellent at what it does. Do they slammed in season? Why yes, yes they do. Are there really efficient kitchen workers hustling like crazy in a hot kitchen to move the food as fast as they can? Yes again. Are customers, especially of the summer variety, occasionally rude and unreasonable? Yup. Does the service stay efficient & the food consistent despite these challenges? Yes again. Despite a huge lot, parking can be a challenge. Pro tip: to get around long summer lines, order in advance.

Hailie J.

Yelp
My family and I stopped at this hole in the wall. The food was decent, that's the only reason I even gave 1 star. There is no seating inside the establishment and there's only 5 picnic tables outside (which is insane especially since Montauk is a tourist attraction in the summer). Therefore, we had to wait for a family to leave to sit down. One of my family members needed to use the bathroom and the employees refused and told us we can't use it since "they're a takeout restaurant".... Which they literally aren't bc they provide tables. The food took an absurd amount of time to come out. Also they wouldn't let me bring my chihuahua in. Ridiculous.

Alex G.

Yelp
So I finally gave this place another try after years because it's in the vicinity of my job and most places aren't open on mondays. I have no idea how a taco could be so bland. Not just one, but the chicken pork and beef are all practically flavorless. The tres leches was an embarrassment, and I cannot believe this place is still in business. Truly not a good choice, even drunk I wouldn't be able to enjoy this food.
google avatar

Megha M.

Yelp
Cute little Mexican joint with decent food. We went in mid August for lunch, and there wasn't a lot of rush. Service was fast and we got our order very quickly. We paid 30$ for 5 tacos, rice n beans, and coke. There is water, lime, and hot sauces in the back. Benches and parking outside. They take card. Food was decent, nothing crazy. We enjoyed our meal.
google avatar

Romina R.

Yelp
Good tacos! We tried chicken, beef, sausage, pork, and fish. My favorites were in order beef, chicken, and fish. We eat a lot of tacos and these were solid. I am really shocked by all the bad reviews here. Nice outdoor seating with picnic tables surrounded by bamboo far off the road. Dog friendly at the picnic tables!!!!
google avatar

Sara L.

Yelp
Not the greatest food or experience. It's a rip off to sell things of this quality foe this price. The salad is just lettuce and crispy fish. The nachos are just melted cheese. Other spots with better options.

Yelp
This review is for the food only, as we ordered take out. First off, after 5pm they shut off their online ordering system and you have to call in to place your order. When I called at 6:30pm to place my order, they said it would be ready in 45 minutes. I arrived at 7:15pm and only had to wait a few more minutes for my food to be ready. Their outdoor seating set up is cute and socially distanced, however, the area where you pick up your food was extremely crowded and not at all distanced. I got a large order of dinner for my whole family, and they did make everything correctly which was great, however the quality of food was disappointing. I'm from Texas and so I've had my fair share of Mexican street food over the years, and this was not nearly as good as it could have been. The tacos lacked flavor, the tortillas were very plain, the fish taco had deep fried fish which tasted really oily, and the guac was not made in the traditional way by adding in pico de gallo, rather, it just seemed to have jalapeño. The chips did not taste like they were made in house, though at least they were not overly salty. The presentation was extremely poor - I understand that in to go containers the plating can be harder, but it looked like the food was just thrown together without thinking about portability or aesthetics at all. All in all, I will not be coming back.

Yelp
Place is a Mexican outlet in the Hamptons so it means it's in rare company because there are not that many around. With that said food is cafeteria Mexican bad...literally a hospital can make better Mexican food but hey it's in the Hamptons :) Ignore it if u can

Mayor Elizabeth A.

Yelp
The food was so bad and over priced that I literally threw everything in the trash I don't have anything good to say about the service because that was horrible as well plus there was no where for anybody to sit really this is the waste food that I have ever had in my 78 years of life
google avatar

Madeleine B.

Yelp
Well-priced, convenient, & casual for dinner after a day at the beach. I enjoyed the shredded pork nachos and my boyfriend got the pollo plate. The tamarind agua fresca was also refreshing. Friendly staff too! I'd happily return here when back in Amagansett & craving some Mexican cuisine.
google avatar

Dren K.

Yelp
Worst service ever. My brother ordered here 8/28/20, and the owner wanted to fight my brother because he was double parked. We had to call the police. La Fondita has fallen down hill. It's sad, because I remember eating here used to be a great experience. Now it's dangerous because the owner wants to fight their customers. Customers want good food, not to engage in fist fights.
google avatar

Emily N.

Yelp
Their flavors are on point. Super authentic. Portions are generous. Salsas are okay, the roja is perfection, verde is just okay. The staff aren't overly friendly but service is quick and efficient. I recommend

Marion S.

Yelp
What a sad situation. Cold nachos..and you know that didn't bother to melt the cheese..tacos with basically no spices at all though they did charge extra for a few shreds of lettuce.. refried beans.. thought not a bean in site..clearly made in a blender. $10 for 4 cans of soda except they forgot to put them in the bag. If there weren't so many Hispanic people working there, I would guess that 2 Polish guys from Brooklyn decided to open a taco joint in the Hamptons and make a killing
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
Got La Fondita the other night as take in with my family since they all absolutely love the place and always grab in on our way out east. The nachos were SO GOOD with the shredded beef and for me to say that is a big deal as I really only get nachos from one place. We also got the burrito bowls which were good as well but we had a long day of eating so we're pretty full by that point. But seriously the nachos are amazing and I can't wait to get them next. If I didn't have tacos for the previous 2 nights I definitely would have tried those too
google avatar

Tatiana T.

Yelp
Loved coming here every summer. Great food and cozy ambiance. Did not get a chance to frequent the restaurant till last Friday. I was not aware of the renovations, unfortunately the portions got smaller and not as flavorful as before. I also missed the number calling. Quality of food should not decline when a restaurant expands.

Danielle G.

Yelp
Great food, some of the best I've had in this area. Cute outdoor spots to eat outside. Would come back again.
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Seriously good, authentic Mexican food! Have been meaning to try this place for a while and happy I finally did tonight. Guacamole has a whipped creamy texture, chips are fresh, tacos excellent. Love the Diet Coke in a bottle. Will be back!

Joyce E.

Yelp
Guacamole was good and after that I can't give any more stars. Shrimp burritos had one tiny shrimp in each. They were all rice and beans. Chicken burrito had one small trace of chicken and that was it- all rice and beans. We will not be returning. There are better take out places in the area.

Tom H.

Yelp
We were craving La Fondita as we drove from Jersey to the Hamptons. No, we did not understand that we had to call in our order in advance - our apologies for not reading the notes posted on your door. Our apologies for asking to use the restroom - we should have assumed the restrooms were closed. The food has always been fine here, but customer friendly service was very lacking this time. We visited several other establishments in the vicinity during our stay, and all seem to have figured out how to accommodate customers. Recent quotes from other reviews that matched our service: True: "very sad to see how such an amazing place is destroyed by its service. The girls are dismissive and have no interest in helping or providing good service" True: "The personality of each staff member was very unfriendly and apathetic. They acted like the 8 of us were inconveniencing them and they were doing US a favor. Please. Never again." True: "worst service ever. would not take an order in person, said I had to call even though I was standing 5 feet from the person taking orders"
google avatar

Carolina I.

Yelp
I have been here many times during the summer for the last 5 years! I understand that it is a difficult time for everyone, but I don't believe this has anything to do with the terrible service and the food that was done without care, all thrown around , we didn't even get limes!!!! It is very sad to see how such an amazing place is destroyed by its service. The girls are dismissive and have no interest in helping or providing good service.
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
Stupidly high prices for very mediocre food. My shrimp tacos had grit and small rocks in them! They refused to do anything about the problem. A meal for three was $50. We had to get fast food afterwards to keep from starving. Stay away at all costs.
google avatar

Alexander F.

Yelp
Not only is the food mediocre, but their ability to serve their patrons during corona is garbage.

Brandon G.

Yelp
We love la fondita! Always fresh and delish!! Very authentic and priced nicely. We always get take out and everything has always been perfect!! Very satisfied customer!
google avatar

Wanda M.

Yelp
Sorry but this is the worst Mexican food ever. Shrimp are the size of my pinky. Food is very blah. Service is ok. Not worth the time. Sorry.
google avatar

Eduardo A.

Yelp
Tasty Mexican food. Carnitas, rice, refried beans sooo good. Will be ordering again. Ordered take out. Only complaints: Spicy sauce could use more heat, and tortillas were small.
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
How unexpected to find a taco stand near East Hampton. And while taco's will never be expensive, this place serves one for the price of two. Call me a sucker, but I am willing to pay $2.75 for a legitimate taco after two months on the East Coast. A legitimate taco, to those of you who may not know, is two small corn tortillas, your choice of meat, and onion/cilantro topping. These are fine. Fine carnitas. Fine pollo. Fine carne asada. They even have Horchata. The Tres Leche and Flan are sweet and rich, but I can't recommend them. The cake has a layer of dulce de leche on top, and the flan is a bit too delicate and bland. Overall, very soul satisfying for this West Coast refugee. NB the joint is owned by the same folks behind Nick and Toni's.

Rohin H.

Yelp
It's an amazing restaurant. I eat at it all the time and if I could rate it a 6 I would. They make such good soap de tortilla soup. Love the tacos and chips and guacamole.

Scott S.

Yelp
been here many times and always liked the tacos. ate the birria tacos last sunday and have been having horrible food poisoning since then. dont eat the birria tacos.

L L.

Yelp
The BEST!!!!! They have something for everyone. Amazing options for vegetarians. Enjoy

Kingston G.

Yelp
They didn't tell us but be aware that they do not take orders after 5pm, though they're open til 8pm. Definitely would be helpful to know this in advance. Food was okay. Chorizo was dry but the rest of the tacos (carnitas and pork) I had were relatively good considering the the north east region has a poor representation of Mexican food. So don't expect much if you come from Texas, California, etc.
google avatar

Oona K.

Yelp
literally one of my favorite restaurants in long island. has been our family favorite and go-to for many many years! must eat here if you visit east hampton or amagansett. many options on the menu and the food is very delicious.

A F.

Yelp
First-off, we love La Fondita in spite of its flaws. They use high quality ingredients, and that makes the food a notch above typical Mexican. However, about half the time the order comes out wrong. When we have a full conversation about how we "cannot eat cilantro," it's maddening to get home and find our order with cilantro on absolutely everything. Whenever we consider La Fondita, the question is always " how badly will it be messed up this time?" Just simply giving a damn would help a lot.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
I love the food here; the tortilla soup is great (although very stingy with the tortilla strips), the chorizo Torta and burritos are awesome. The tacos are also great. The employees who work here although talented in the kitchen are not experts in customer service; however I've found this to be the case of most Hamptons establishments and have become quite used to it.
google avatar

Lydia Y.

Yelp
This is a mixed review. The good: The outside seating and the casual nature of this restaurant. It's right off Montauk Highway on the "below-the-highway" side and not near town, really, so it's easy to miss. But don't let that fool you, it's easy enough to find that it gets packed on summer weekends. But it's still a great vibe outside in a "woody" area with loads of trees, so you're sort of off the beaten path. The interior is small and really only for ordering and getting yoru sauces. You generally would take food to go or be seated outside on picnic tables. It's a casual paradise in the Hamptons. The not-so great is the food. It's not bad, but not great. The tacos are just passable. the esquites are better for sure but not amazing. And that would be A-OK if the prices were more reasonable. It's just so expensive for what you get. Nachos just shouldn't be so expensive. If you're in Southampton or Amagansett, it's a good choice. If you're east of Amagansett or in Montauk, check out the Hideaway or Tacombi.

Anthomy F.

Yelp
HORRIBLE!!! This place is far less than Chipotle quality. The only positive I can say is the tortilla soup wasn't awful. I ordered the chicken burrito, problem is the chicken was tasteless and not much of it. My wife had the pork burrito bowl. She ate about a third of it and decided we had been ripped off for $38. We figured it was going to be expensive because of the location. It's just that we didn't expect it to suck. IT DID! Save yourself the disappointment, don't stop.

Samantha B.

Yelp
Great lunch spot. We ordered tortas, burritos, retried beans and rice, and guacamole and chips. Particularly enjoyed the rice and beans. Easy to order and pick up. COVID-appropriate outdoor dining situation.
google avatar

Amber E.

Yelp
Dry, flavorless, and rude. Taco Bell could do mexican food better. 2/10 don't waste your time (of which this place took much of) or waste your money just to be snapped at and given some weak ass food.

Jason M.

Yelp
The food was well-made. The pollo adobado is good. The personality of each staff member was very unfriendly and apathetic. They acted like the 8 of us were inconveniencing them and they were doing US a favor. Please. Never again.
google avatar

Gary C.

Yelp
Great spot, great tacos. Chilled vibe. Give it a try for some casual Mexican cusine! Tres Leches is off the charts

Arian A.

Yelp
My wife and I got food poisoning after eating at La Fondita on 8/23/20. We're still sick so I felt compelled to write this review. Their tacos were very bland and had little flavor, if any. The meat was soggy and the guacamole was very wet, not sure how they managed to mess that up. We couldn't finish our meal so we decided to throw it away which is a shame considering how expensive it is. I would not recommend eating here.
