The Best Croissants In Chicago

"A croissant from La Fournette is like a boxer punching above their weight. Free of any hefty fillings, the plain option is lighter than other croissants on this guide, and it managed to knock out nearly half of the contenders (including some from our favorite bakeries). It tastes more like flavorless bread crust than rich, buttery dough—but that just means it’s the perfect vehicle for sandwiches with salty fillings like ham and cheese, which you can also get at this Old Town bakery." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen

La Fournette Bakery & Cafe Review - Old Town - Chicago - The Infatuation

"You could eat nothing but bread at La Fournette, and leave feeling quite pleased with your decision. Freshly baked baguettes and miche loaves line the wall of this Old Town French bakery, ready to be snatched up by the stream of locals looking to channel their inner Parisian. But besides their signature bread, La Fournette also churns out baskets of flaky croissants, soft brioche buns, and danishes involving the entire fruit section of a Jewel. The pastries are good, and while the plain croissants taste more like flavorless bread crust than rich, buttery dough, that just means they’re the perfect vehicle for sandwiches with salty fillings like ham and cheese, which you can also get here. photo credit: Veda Kilaru" - Veda Kilaru

Google
This is the real deal French patisserie, staff even speak French in the background. That’s how you know it’s authentic. I ordered an amazing almond croissant, best I’ve had in Chicago. It’s clear they use quality ingredients they’ve put a lot of thought into. Fast service, didn’t wait long to get my order. They had good looking baguettes I wish I could’ve tried, maybe next time. Overall I definitely recommend La Fournette, worth a visit.

Google
Great bakery! Loved their chicken spinach quieche and very good baguette

Google
Delicious salad, baguette, croissant sandwich, coffee, macaron, and special cakes. We love everything there. Three cheers to the chef!!! The atmosphere is fun and the owner is wonderful. There is no wait. We will definitely come back!

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to write a review. I visit about 2/3 times a week and truly love this place. From the staff to the food - it’s always reliable. It’s a great option to support local when compared to Starbucks near by. Also probably one of my favorite almond croissants and a very reasonable price for the city!

Google
The baked goods are incredible. My sandwich had only a single thin layer of sausage, a couple of gherkin slices placed on either end, and 4 tiny pieces of sliced hazelnut. Considering their prices it was not a good value (also, the man behind the counter was unable to tell me what was in the sandwich which could have been problematic if I had a nut allergy).

Google
I’ve made it a mission in 2024 to find the best almond croissant in Chicago, and I’m happy to say that La Fournette is winning by far!! Their shops is small, yet mighty! It’s not wheelchair accessible so keep that in mind if you need access. However, they do have a cute outdoor patio that gives the right vibes if the weather permits. I’ve had a plethora of their bakery items and their croissants are my absolute favorite. I will say, if you are looking for something savory, their quiche (I get the veg as they are not halal but I’ve had friends have their other flavors and say they have been dreaming about the damn quiche for months) and it’s so delicious (this is an understatement); It’s a great portion to have for breakfast or brunch! The people here are welcoming, helpful, friendly, and open to suggestions. I live far from the city and I will 100% make the drive on the weekends to enjoy this wonderful bakery. So, what are you waiting for? Go check them out!!

Google
Very cozy bakery/cafe. Pastries were amazing and I’d love to come back for their breakfast and lunch products. Coffee is very bitter, I’m not sure if it is the taste that they are going for, but I felt they were grinding too fine or extracting too long. It almost tastes like Turkish coffee. If you are into that, I’m sure you’d like the coffee here. I was more looking for a smooth shots.

Google
Today Chicago has very nice sunshine which is rare in 20 days except for the heavy snow and big wind and today I decided to enjoy the sunshine and walk a lot ,so I walked toward downtown and I ran into this very exquisite bakery. It happened to be my list on Google maps ,I heard from other people and just saved it and today I bought almond croissant, which is so delicious and crisp . I love the Store and croissant will definitely come by again.

Yelp
Came in for a few treats early on a Friday, and ended up trying the Almond Croissant, the Berliner Beignet filled with Hazelnut, the Saucisson Sandwich which is a salami sandwich on a baguette, and a side of the pasta salad! That sandwich was SO good!! There were nuts on there which I would have never guessed to add on a salami sandwich, but it was incredible! I'm also still dreaming of the pasta salad. Now that I live in the area, I have to come back to try some more goods! So far nothing has been disappointing :)

Yelp
Very cute and busy French bakery! We got the pistachio hazelnut danish - AMAZING! The lemon pound cake was also very lemony and refreshing. We also got a pack of the madeleines, they felt a slight bit dry but tasty still. Coffee was amazing - I got a hot caramel latte. Perfect for the cold weather!

Yelp
Such an authentic French place with great coffee & food! You immediately want to cozy inside and feel like you are in France. The people speak in French and are so friendly. The service was great & just all around a fantastic experience while visiting Chicago!

Yelp
I drove my car to La Fournette, and while I was able to find street parking after about 5 minutes, I could see it being a bit difficult to find parking during the busy weekends. As I walked up to the bakery, it had a nice cozy authentic French Boulangerie feel, lots of old wooden tables and furniture. There were six wooden tables, with seating for two people each and a standing shelf table looking out the window. I was greeted with a "Bonjour" as I walked up to the counter. That was a nice touch. I ordered the ham and cheese baguette sandwich, the almond croissant, and the raspberry danish. I also had the cappuccino. I really liked all three food items. The ham and cheese and the French cornichon pickles complemented each other well. Although the baguette was on the hard side, it did add a nice contrast. The almond croissant and the raspberry danish were tasty without being overly sweet. The cappuccino was a bit flat, and I was hoping for something more flavorful. I wished the bathroom had more of a French ambiance, similar to the rest of the bakery. But it was a bit sterile. Overall, it is worth visiting this charming authentic French bakery. If I lived closer or had my office nearby, I would visit more often.

Yelp
Amazing Bakery and excellent coffee. Very nice staff. Worth the long walk for me but a nice reward when you get there. Very friendly people who go to this place too!

Yelp
Visiting Chicago for the weekend and was on the hunt for breakfast when I walked by this place in Old Town. I figured I'd just get a croissant since it is a French Bakery! As i was deciding between a plain croissant or a sandwich, one of the male employees came to assist me to which I learned I couldn't get a sandwich as I don't eat ham or cheese :( The croissant I purchased was warm, buttery (guilty pleasure here and there) and flaky. Perfect snack until lunch. The place had a few small families and couples at the table giving it a cozy vibe. I'm glad i popped in today.

Yelp
Great spot for lunch in Chicago. Pastries were very yummy and I had a great turkey panini. It wasn't super busy and they have some outside tables which was lovely.

Yelp
A spot in Old Town Chicago featuring French/European baked goods and cafe-style foods. They sell many different kinds of hearty rustic bread, such as their multigrain and sourdough. Besides, they sell pastries and other bread, such as croissant and brioche. Their sourdough was good, but I did not try their pastries. For breakfast, I tried the Quiche veggie and Croque Monsieur. In general satisfactory; especially considering the total price. The Quiche was speical to me in that it was a rectangular-shape and had zucchini inside -- never had zucchini in quiche before but I would say it went well with the eggs. I enjoyed the quiche very much. Their Croque Monsieur was not bad either but a little too saily for me, perhaps due to the ham. Despite this, I really like the gooey cheese inside and bechamel sauce topped on the bread! As the sandwich was about 60% cheaper than what sold in Venteux Brasserie, there is really not much to complain about. Another highlight was that the restaurant was counter-service and no tip was required! Besides, food was served quickly.

Riley V.

Yelp
The pastries and breads are to die for, but I was SO impressed with their coffee! Easily one of the best lattes I've had in the area.

Yelp
La Fournette is a french bakery in Old Town that has really fresh and high quality bakery items. We got a plain croissant and raspberry danish. We loved them both! They had a lot of different croissant options, other sweet breakfast items and fresh baked bread as well. Great place to stop in for a quick breakfast and coffee!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute and affordable french bakery!! There was a line when we went at 10am on a Saturday but it moved quickly. There is a free macaron with yelp check in so make sure to do that - they have tons of macaron flavors to choose from. I ended up buying a pumpkin beignet which was SO GOOD and very unique .. I wish a bakery near me in NYC sold this bc I'd buy so many. Also got a hot chocolate which was solid. Would def come here again!

Yelp
I'm so happy to have found a proper French bakery in Chicago finally! Staff is super friendly, and everyone is greeted with "bonjour" walking in the door. Ils parlent Français! Classic pastry items are all very delicious, croissant, pain du chocolat, almond croissant...etc. They have a good selection of delicious breads, too. During mardi gras season, they have galette des rois!!! You can pick up items to go or eat in. There are several small tables to enjoy your food and drinks inside! This is now my go-to bakery!
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Got there too late in the morning for the main pastries (there were none left), but they had madeleines left which were fantastic and priced right. We got the red velvet madeleines and rasberry macraroons, and both were great. I want to come back ealier next time to try the other pastries.

Yelp
Such a gem in old town. The staff speak French and are so open to you trying to order in French (they'll even give you tips). Saturday mornings are always busy and for good reason, you cannot go wrong! I love all the croissants but the ham and cheese is the knockout for me, it may be the best in Chicago. I'm also a massive fan of the chocolate twist! There is indoor seating but I usually take it to go! Highly recommend!!

Vicki T.

Yelp
Very cute & cozy French bakery. The almond croissants were amazing. The ham & cheese croissants also hit the spot
google avatar

Yelp
A neighborhood gem that transports me back to France. I genuinely look forward to my visits because of the high quality, authentic, and affordable bakery items. Don't miss out on the ham and cheese croissant, the miche bread, and their homemade jams. It's also one of the few places left with affordable coffee. The staff is always lovely, greeting you with a warm "Bonjour". Merci!!
google avatar

Jess S.

Yelp
Stopped in at EOD,very clean and warm ambiance ... grabbed an almond croissant and it is quite possibly the best croissant I've ever tasted. Flaky, buttery, the right amount of almond flavor. Staff was friendly and helpful, definitely has me wanting to drive the 9 hours again just to have a croissant.
google avatar

Austin S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my cappuccino, and my close friend gave great service of course. There isn't much space to sit though, and the WiFi was a little spotty.

Rose M.

Yelp
I might have come on an off day, but was disappointed after hearing great things about this place. Weak coffee and the pastries/breads we tried were only ok.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
My go-to quick and easy breakfast in Old Town is the La Fournette ham & cheese croissant. The croissant is flakey, the ham seems like it's good quality, and the cheese is good too. Ordering here is always quick and easy, the workers always friendly, and the bread always delicious. If you don't want to sit down for a meal and need something fast in the area, this is my recommendation!! Whether that be for breakfast or lunch (there sandwiches are good, don't let the salami x peanut combo throw you off).

Alayna D.

Yelp
Love getting my fresh bread here weekly! Very good sour dough and miche bread. They will slice it and you can get a half or a full loaf!
google avatar

Sook L.

Yelp
Great croissant. Not too strong on the almond extract which we appreciate. Cappuccino is good too. Service was excellent. Staffs were very friendly. Space was cozy and comfortable for a small bakery.

Yelp
During a weekend trip to Chicago, I strolled into La Fournette and was very pleased! I arrived somewhat early, around 9am and I would definitely suggest this as the crowd filled up very quickly and seats are limited. It's a little bit of a hectic ordering process but all of the staff were so sweet, that I didn't mind all the hustle and bustle. To the food. I grabbed a bag of pastries to enjoy throughout the week and had Quiche Lorraine and a Latte inside. The quiche was great and my latte hit the spot! Great crust and flavor on the quiche. The best pastry was by far the Almond Croissant. I have had many from different places over the years and this was darn good. The Chocolate Twist was decent. I wanted to like the Brioche Streussel more but it was a bit dry for me. Overall, this was a very cool French bakery with good energy and lots of artisan choices. I will absolutely return to try out other menu items!
google avatar

Adele B.

Yelp
I wanted to try the almond croissant here and sorry to say it was awful there's flaky and there's brittle. It completely fell apart! The inside taste good but the bulk of the croissant was dry, brittle and went to waste. I miss Le Pain Quotidien so much, now their french styled pastries were amazing!
google avatar

Ali K.

Yelp
Such a great place. The staff was very friendly even though the place was very busy. We ordered the veggie quiche and the 3 cheese panini. The panini was buttered up pretty well before being toasted so came up as expected. If you don't want that much butter, make sure to ask. I think next time I will ask for a little less. Regardless, it was yummy. The quiche was good as well. The seating area outside is perfect. Also ordered a almond croissant which was yummy as well. Recommend. Great place to sit outside and people watch enjoying a pastry.
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem! The unassuming storefront of La Fournette doesn't do them justice at all. La Fournette offers DELICIOUS baguettes and croissants l--and a whole lot of other good-looking pastries! I'd been meaning to swing by this shop ever since I had their baguette at Chez Moi and am so glad I did. Their croissant was flaky on the outside and soft and buttery on the inside. Their baguette had a lovely crunchy crust with a pillowy interior that had just the right amount of chewiness. Gah, just thinking about it makes me want another one! In addition to the breads, I also got a caramel macaron using their 1 free macaron coupon for checking in. Definitely did not regret my choice but am now dying to try all the other flavors!!
google avatar

Giulietta V.

Yelp
La Fournette to me is one of the best pastry chops in Chicago, hands down the best French style bread and without preservatives. From Baguette to Quiche, top quality!
google avatar

Elizabeth X.

Yelp
Cute bakery in the area! Well loved - it was pretty busy but the line keeps moving. Many small groups sitting outside enjoying their goods. The raspberry beignet was my favorite.
google avatar

Velina M.

Yelp
This must be my favorite breakfast place! Pay attention to the working hours 7AM-2PM. Conveniently located on Wells, it's my go to quick and delicious place. It has outdoor sitting but only if you are lucky enough to find a spot since it's always busy on the weekend. So heads up if you are trying to dine in, go earlier in the morning. If not it's the perfect place for take out! My bf loved the croque. He ended up finishing it in under 5 min (should be some kind of a record haha). Then he attacked the almond croissant which I wasn't happy with. The almond croissant is my fav item on their menu. It's so so good! Sweet and crunchy. Go get it now! The tuna sandwich was very delicious as well. It seemed like a lot but I was able to finish it in one sitting. It combines a lot of different flavors and they all work together nicely. This is a great quality place so the prices were appropriate about $30 post tax. You are paying for what you are getting, basically great quality and fantastic taste! We will go back there soon.

Maria M.

Yelp
The one thing a French bakery should get right is croissants. I came at the end of a Sunday and ordered a cheese panini and an almond croissant to go for later. The cheese panini was good and I was looking forward to the croissant which I tried to eat an hour later. Unfortunately this was THE WORST croissant I've ever had. It was stale, a centimeter worth of stale all around and the inside was dried out with almost zero filling. Apparently they take day old croissants cut them in half and fill them with almond paste. Since they sell at a premium the croissants should be fresh. I couldn't eat it, it was so bad. It wasn't fit to give away which is what they ahould do with old croissants, or put them into a bread pudding. I also felt uncomfortable with at least two flies buzzing around the open pastry cases and breads. Who knows how often they briefly stopped to drop their disease ridden filth on the pastries. I wish I could get my money back.
google avatar

Gabriel G.

Yelp
Excellent customer service! The croissant was flaky to the touch. Each bite reminded me of childhood in France. The chocolate from the croissant was giving Belgium. Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a box of happiness.
google avatar

Joanne L.

Yelp
Came to grab a bite before going for a walk in Lincoln Park. This place had such a classy, homey vibe. The staff would greet every guest in French and take their orders at the counter. The selection of bread and pastries looked amazing. We got a blueberry danish and an almond croissant. The almond croissant was the clear winner - so buttery and flaky, the almond filling was delicious and generous. The danish was good but slightly cold. They seemed to have a great selection of meat and cheeses so I'd definitely come by again to grab a sandwich.
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Got a tasty warmed almond croissant with bear claw filling. There wasn't a noticeable almond extract flavor. Kind service, cute interior.
google avatar

Nitya R.

Yelp
We got the chocolate pound cake and a pain de chocolat, and 3 types of macarons (mango passion fruit, red velvet, and pistachio). The pound cake was absolutely delicious -- if you're a chocolate person, definitely try it. It's like a cakey brownie that's rich and moist. Out of the macrons, the pistachio was easily the best but they were all delicious. The pain de chocolat was huge and disappointing with the amount of filling. Otherwise, the pastry was crisp and buttery!
google avatar

Cheyenne G.

Yelp
I've never been to Paris, but I imagine this is what the street cafes would smell like! The moment I opened the door, I was hit with an incredible aroma of fresh baked croissants and lattes. The staff was absolutely delightful! I was craving a quiche and they recommend their top favorites + some tasty macaroons. The quiche was terrific! So much so I devoured it before I could capture a photo. The crust was buttery and flaky, and the eggs were so fluffy -- I think this is the first real quiche I've ever had because nothing compares to it. I highly recommend it! And I believe this spot is family owned? Everyone had thick French accents so I think this is the most authentic French cafe I've had in Chicago! I will certainly be a regular!

Josh E.

Yelp
We the ham & cheese croissant and the veggie quiche and both were in wonderfully savory, and exactly what we our bodies needed after a trek through the Chicago snow. The staff were warm and welcoming, and it never gets old hearing " bonjour" as you walk through the door, creating an ambiance that genuinely feels like you're in the opening of Beauty & The Beast.
google avatar

Laurence S.

Yelp
The finest croissant in Old Town and the Gold Coast! Perfect and flaky pastries, freshly made, outstanding French sandwiches that can't be matched in this location. No need to travel far for your culinary desires to be realized! And great iced lattes that I usually get to go.

Monika V.

Yelp
This place is SO good. Flaky delicious pastries and delicious vanilla lattes. Highly recommend the ham and cheese croissant and raspberry danish!!!

Yelp
Pit-Stop | Options | Pound Cake Pit-Stop - La Fournette is in a great part of Old Town conducive to a quick pit stop before brunch, after brunch, or on to run errands. You can quickly get in and out of the restaurant because they are very efficient with their order and processing system. Options - They have a variety of options across the board. Whether Scones, Poundcake, Macaroons, croissant, or coffee, La Fournette has a variety of gourmet options for you to choose from that are all delicious. Pound Cake - I had the Lemon poundcake, which was DELICIOUS! It had a rich taste, solid but not stiff crust, that melted in your mouth. I would gladly get it again. Pro Tip: Go earlier in the day because they have a set number of pastries that they make daily. Therefore, when it's gone, it's gone. So, to maximize your choices, go earlier. Pro Tip: There is not a lot of parking near the restaurant. Therefore, plan on walking there if you are going to try it out.

Yelp
I stopped in for a croissant. Came in at about 7:15am and there was this customer having a conversation in French with one of their employees and I was welcomed with a bonjour! Talk about an authentic French bakery. The staff here was very friendly and even made conversation with me about sports. In English of course. Lol. I bought their Almond Croissant. This is definitely one of the best croissant I have ever tried. The croissant tasted so fresh and was sliced in half with the bottom half having a nice moist bite to it. I wouldn't say it was flaky or buttery like I've had in the last (there's absolutely nothing wrong with those) but this was definitely something different and I enjoyed it. It seems like this a French bakery style way of making this croissant. I will without a doubt be returning.
google avatar

Ted A.

Yelp
I really like almond croissants, and this bakery has a really good almond croissant. You should definitely come here to try the almond croissant. I only got one almond croissant but could have eaten many more of them, but there are so many calories in just one. I need to stay healthy and live a long life to enjoy many more almond croissants. I also got an americano which was pretty good. It is cramped inside, but they have a couple of tables outdoors on the sidewalk.
google avatar

Christopher B.

Yelp
I could not decide what I wanted. So many amazing options. Instead of going sweet I walked out with a ham n cheese sandwich and an ice latte. Both fantastic. I want to know how everything else is. Probably the same!! The place was quaint with a welcoming and eager staff. We opted to sit at the patio outside. Perfect!!! Very much will be on the top of my list to revisit the next time I'm in the area!
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
The best!!! Seriously the olive bread is to die for. The croissants are flaky, fresh & fabulous. Try the almond it's the best. And the macaroons The staff is friendly and helpful. You seriously cannot make a bad choice except to choose not to go.
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
The pastry and coffee are very good here. I wish the chocolate croissant had more chocolate inside but I sure did enjoy the flaky, buttery pastry. They have a few seats outside but it would be nice if the could open up some seating inside the store.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't believe I waited this long to come here. Omg, so good. I may have to drive to Old Town every week to eat my way through their menu. I was in a hurry so I placed an online order. Easy peasy. I ordered a croque monsieur, ham and cheese croissant, hazelnut beignet, raspberry beignet, loaf of cheese bread and a coffee. Everything was delicious! They asked if I wanted the sandwiches heated up. I only had them heat up the croque monsieur since the croissant was traveling. They asked if I wanted silverware and napkins. I only took the napkin. Big mistake. Um, I completely forgot croque monsieur is not eaten with hands. Well, I did. I'm sure the French would be mortified watching me eat it with my hands in the car. What can a hungry gal do with a 2 hour drive ahead? I should have gone back for the silverware, but I was lazy. The croque monsieur was rich, creamy, and cheesy. Yum yum yum. The beignets were doughnut size perfect texture with a light coating of sugar. The raspberry filling tasted like raspberries and not too sweet. Delicious! My daughter enjoyed the hazelnut one. The croissant was for her and I forgot to tell her to heat it up. She enjoyed it anyway. The croissant was flaky. I'll have to pick up a variety of croissants next time! The cheese bread had great cheese flavor throughout the loaf. The bread wasn't too dense nor squishy. It's the bread you would expect from a French bakery. If you're in Old Town early in the day, it's worth a stop. If you're not in Old Town, it's worth a drive. What a gem! I will be a regular!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Amazing, cute little bakery in Old Town. Quick service with a small amount of outdoor seating. Definitely a 5 for their ALMOND CROISSANT!!! For pastries, definitely stick with the croissants! I heard their breads are also good, although I've never tried them personally Almond Croissant: 5/5, best almond croissant I've ever had, I consistently come back for this. If you get the chance, reheat it in a toaster oven or toaster oven for an extra flakey crust! Streusel Brioche: 2.5/5, relatively plain, brioche is just okay Blueberry Danish: 3.5/5, okay, not as flaky as I expected
google avatar

James V.

Yelp
The ham and cheese panini was a disgusting pig-sty-of-a-mess. The blackboard menu said nothing about carrots, onions and a hard piece of sliced potato that was added to it. It was HORRIBLE. Never again.
google avatar

Becca D.

Yelp
This place is fantastic and like other have said absolutely authentic. Their croissants, raspberry danish, quiche, Madelines, and beignets are soo good. The beignets are probably my favorite, so light and not too sweet. I'd recommend coming earlier in the morning because by noon they seem to have sold out of a lot of stuff. I haven't had the sandwiches or macaroons yet but it's in my list.
google avatar

Yelp
OMG what wonderful environment, food and staff. We could be in Paris! Will be back everyday while we are in Chicago.
