La Fuente has been a neighborhood staple since 1979. Despite living in HLP my entire life, I have never been until recently. This place is family owned & operated. Mom is in the kitchen cooking. Abel, his brother & daughters work the floor. The décor is lively & festive and there's a brightly colored mural on the wall. There is also an old school jukebox, which is really cool.
They don't have a full bar (beer & wine only), so the margaritas are wine based. The chips are fresh and they come with Salsa Roja & Pico de Gallo. Both had a nice flavor. I wish the Roja was spicier. My friend and I ordered the Camarones Diabla to share. It came with rice & beans and a salad. I also got a side salad for myself. The side salad came with guacamole, which made me happy. The shrimp were plump & juicy and the Diabla sauce was so tasty. It was addicting. The rice was moist & fluffy and the beans were yummy.
We enjoyed our meal so much that we came back a few days later to try the Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo, which is one of their signature dishes. The presentation was nice. The succulent shrimp were butterflied and slightly crispy on the outside & juicy inside. They were sauteed in garlic butter with lime and herbs. The sauce was amazing!
If you want a good home cooked Mexican meal, La Fuente is the spot. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. I just wished they had a full bar because a classic margarita would have made my meal even better.
