22 Standout Mexican Restaurants in Houston

"Just as its name suggests, this Heights restaurant is reminiscent of a real Mexican hacienda. Colorful paper strands drape from the ceiling, and a large space peppered with banquettes and tables is anchored by a grand staircase. The menu is old-school with a number of combo platters, like the La Hacienda Special, which combines a chile con queso puff, beef taco, stuffed bell pepper, cheese enchilada, and tamale with rice and beans." - Brittany Britto Garley, Kayla Stewart

Houston’s Most Underrated Restaurants

"This decades-old restaurant that mimics a traditional Mexican hacienda is located in the Heights, but it’s set apart from the hustle and bustle of the area’s more sceney bars and eateries. Its menu boasts classic comfort eats like grilled steak nachos, a variety of meat and cheese enchiladas, and combination fajitas. The dining room is bedecked with rows of colorful flags and features a small nook where fresh tortillas are made, giving diners a festive environment in which to dine, day and night." - Megha McSwain

Mexican restaurant in the heights. Food is good and authentic, big portions. The place is beautifully decorated and it delivers a great environment. Service is great, our server was polite and the waiting time to get our food was pretty short. Definitely worth a visit if you haven't been. Margaritas were pretty good but not remarkable. Open until late, which is convenient for dinner after events. They have a parking lot.

Google
Tex-Mex haven in the heights! It’s kind of hidden, so you’ve gotta be “in the know.” Or you can google Tex-Mex near me, if you’re in the heights. I say this because I’ve never seen this place until this year! Muy Delicioso!

Carlos Romero

Google
The place it’s amazing, a really taste of Mexican food! Great menu and options. The atmosphere it’s stunning. A comeback for sure

Google
This place is easily one of my favorite places when visiting Houston. The decor, atmosphere and people are lovely. The food was absolutely amazing and very tasteful and rich in flavor. Drinks are served here as well and highly recommended. Had tres leche cake after and it was also amazing. Highly recommended location.

Google
This is a great hidden gem with a beautiful mexican hacienda vibe . The food is amazing and the fideo dish i just like out of my grandmas kitchen in mexico . The atmosphere is always chill and drinks are super good . I highly recommend this place for a nice date or meeting.

Google
This is a nice reserved little spot that I wasn’t aware of the atmosphere inside is amazing. The decor looks very colorful and it’s a place that you can really take some nice pictures at with your loved ones. The food was good, service was as well. I did order a margarita frozen, but unfortunately, it was too thick to actually drink with a straw so I had to request it just be made with regular ice but other than that I think that if you’re attending a dinner or lunch here with a smaller group or just for a date night - it’s definitely a winner.

Yelp
Love the atmosphere and staff was on point Food was good as well . Great place to meet up with friends

Yelp
the service has improved, kudos to the staff. the Chili con carne smelled like it was burned and tasted like that as well. the meat in the tacos tasted weird. enchiladas were just ok. Beans and rice were bland. the margaritas were meh, they tasted OK but weren't very strong. it's similar to other Tex-mex places around (Ti&s, Don J&se), but costs more.

Yelp
Overall ok....highlights were that we were swiftly seated, friendly and quick service, generous portions, servers constantly checked on us and the vibe and decor was so beautiful and festively Mexican! The food itself was just ok, nothing spectacular. I'd come back to try other dishes. I had the chimichanga plate but it got soggy quickly (even with the sauces on the side). Will be back!

Yelp
5-3-2025. Pulled in for an early dinner and was greeted quickly and seated promptly. I asked if I could move my booth to a window booth and no problem by the waiter. Chips and salsa and drinks were brought to and kept bringing us chips. Ordered our meals and we enjoyed our food. Came out quickly and made so nice. My meal was Carne Guisada.

Yelp
My family and I had dinner here last night for my granddaughter's birthday. Service was great, and the food was okay.

Yelp
A few friends and I visited La Hacienda over the weekend for lunch and it was the first time for all of us. Upon entering, I was impressed with the fun and colorful interior as well as how large it was. There was plenty of seating and we were some of the first there. Upon being seated, we were served with chips and salsas to enjoy while we reviewed the menu. Overall, the service was good. One thing I loved was the wide variety of flavors for the margaritas! My friends and I ordered different flavors so we could try each others, but the Amaretto flavor was surprisingly my favorite. I ended up ordering the cheese enchiladas which were served with refried beans and rice. The enchiladas weren't the best I've every had but were enjoyable and something I'd order again. I would visit La Hacienda again as I loved the ambiance and thought the pricing was reasonable!

Vidal M.

Yelp
Service is GREAT. The chips and salsa are just as good, just like I like my salsa...warm. Red salsa has a smokey flavor which taste great. The Ambiance is beautiful and you can't resist the feeling of being part of a family.

Yelp
Every visit is great. Great food, vibes, drinks, service. Tex Mex Enchiladas and Mole Enchiladas are my fave. I loveee the salsas! They serve a cold verde and a warm roja. The guacamole is yummy too.

Yelp
Sunday after church, the restaurant and parking lot were very full, but we were seated immediately and our drink order taken. Let me say right now that my coffee or water never went below half before it was refilled. The food excellent and the service was impeccable. We had a very pleasant dining experience. The restaurant has an interesting decor and has been in business for over 50 years. If you would never been I recommend it highly.

Daisy S.

Yelp
This is my new favorite Tex-Méx spot! The food is delicious and reasonably priced. I was looking for some yummy enchiladas verdes and these are on point. The rice is fresh and tasted homemade. My husband liked the flautas and my in laws the stew. The ambiance is great, it's like you are silting in a Mexican patio. The only thing that they could do to improve are the salsa and chips. I like my chips and salsa warm and these were cold although the salsa has a good flavor

Cody M.

Yelp
Some of the best beef fajita meat I've had. Just a small little place with a really really cool interior. The fajita meat was outstanding. Compliments to that chef. The waitress Brenda was very pleasant, and wonderful. didn't bother too much while I was on a working lunch. Always full glass of tea. Just stumbled across this place and glad I did. Thank you. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I understand the lower reviews given by most folks (and the lower average). This is cooking cutter tex-mex down to the yellow queso and the various mixtures of crispy tacos, soft tacos, enchiladas, queso puffs, avocado salads, etc. The service is solid. The margaritas are pretty decent. What I really enjoy is 1) lots of parking and 2) the fact that it feels like you're sitting in the middle of the town square in a Mexican town. A price and ambiance you won't get at some of the more popular texmex spots.

Yelp
Delicious and authentic Mexican food!! I usually get the puff con queso with rice and beans (because I am a child) but everything else I have gotten I have also been pleased with. Their chips are particularly delicious (thin, warm, and crispy) and their salsa and queso are amazing
google avatar

Alexis C.

Yelp
The mole enchiladas were chefs . Ambiance is nice and festive and staff were attentive. Will come back for casual Mexican food meals for sure. For now these leftover mole enchiladas are coming home with me to be repurposed into breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
Classic TX-MEX. The ambience is the same. The menu chuffed with comfort food., along with various began fajitas. The Good food service is welcoming fast and very good. Private lot for an off-street parking lot. A neighbourhood standard. A good choice in an area chuffed with good choices

Yelp
First Time Here and It was Great! The Family Loved it and The Food & Drinks were Great! You will Love The Good Vibe, Scène, Customer Service and Atmosphere. Get Here and Enjoy Yourself.

Yelp
Meh super mid. The prices aren't bad but they definitely match the quality. -Margaritas were fine nothing special -Nachos with ground beef: the half order was probably 6-8 chips and loaded with meat which was good but the cheese is like nacho cheese sauce from the movies -Beef fajitas: not good seems like a low quality meat and not tender They place is kind of cute and they had live music when I arrived but yeah probably won't be back.

Yelp
Came here for the first time w my family and it was amazing. Food was excellent very hot. Good size portion. Also affordable. Classic Mexican restaurant vibe. And our server Mauricio was very attentive to us the entire time.

Sam L.

Yelp
Good old school Tex-Mex. Ask for a table upstairs Margarita's are overpriced but good.

Yelp
We were a party of 8 on cinco de Mayo. We started outside with a pitcher of margs (28 dollars a pitcher) while we waited for our table. That was definitely the move. Once our table was ready, we headed inside and were seated right by the bar. Our server was super nice, but also very busy. We ordered more margs, a couple of beers and our entrees. The menu is HUGE- plenty of options for everyone. I ordered the tacos Al carbon- one beef and one chicken. It was very good- the tortillas were fresh and the meat was great. The night was really interrupted by our server just having a bad night- he was struggling to figure out why some of our order was on another tables tab, then another table he had got the wrong food all at the same time. We were forgotten multiple times trying to pay. We probably waited 30 minutes just to give our cards. They have these handheld devices that make it easy to split checks as long as the order is right. I used to work at a Mexican restaurant, so I'm going to give him some grace. But that would've been a perfect time for someone to step in and help him- send a manager over or something. I watched all 3 tables... no one came. He was just trying his best. I bet when it's not as busy it's fine. But just based on that experience, this won't be my first choice next time.

Yelp
Been looking for a great Tex Mex place in the Heights and we have found it! Classic Tex Mex, great cheese enchiladas, really enjoyed the queso as well. Plenty of seating, they had live mariachi which was amazing!! Our server was attentive. Hope this place gets a lot of business because they are also very affordable
google avatar

JR R.

Yelp
Great texmex place. Chips and salsa are wonderful. Margs are awesome. Staff is very friendly.

Yelp
We were a late night party of 4. Unfortunately two of us were ill the next day, stomach issues, nausea, and diarrhea. So...go figure.

Lorri S.

Yelp
My husband and I went there to eat. I ordered to enchilada plates and half of picture of margaritas. When I got the bill, it was $133.00. I told the waiter I needed to talk to a manager. The margarita were $100 for a half of pitcure. My husband was not happy. I told the manager the price for the pitcher was not on the menu. The glass price was $14.95, I told the manager they should tell ppl how much they cost. I was thinking of much could a half pitcher cost. When buying drinks, you BETTER ASK THE PRICE. Don't be surprised. I

Yelp
Love this neighborhood hidden gem. Plenty of parking, never a wait, and always great service. The ambiance is really authentic, almost feels like a Mexican resort. I've had several things in the menu and everything has been great. Their lunch specials are a great deal and the dinner prices are still half of El Tiempo prices. Love their green sauce and warm hot sauce is a bit spicy but flavorful. My lunch go-to is their chicken tortilla soup. It's a HUGE portion and has a ton of thick cut veggies. Best tortilla soup in the heights IMO. The only negative is that the house margaritas aren't strong, can't really taste much alcohol. Maybe I'll try a top shelf marg next time or order an extra shot to add.

Yelp
I was seeking this place to do a large company party and came to check it out on my own to see if the venue would be able to fit 50 people! I had reached out via phone a week before needing to schedule a party and the manager Frank spoke to me on the phone. He told me that he had just came to that restaurant so he was still fairly new to how the restaurant operated and what their regular processes were for large group parties as such but he would find out for me. I also had requested a quote for a party of 50 people for a 3 hour lunch service on a Friday afternoon. I also had planned to have a mariachi band come perform our guests as well and I also wanted to bring a microphone to make annoucements to our guests during the lunch, Frank said it would be alright for us to have everything we requested. Frank gave me a great quote and it was definitely within my company's budget! I decided to come there anonymously one night with my boyfriend for dinner. It was a tuesday night, very slow because the parking lot was fairly empty and when I entered the restaurant only had about 4 tables filled with small families/ groups of 2-4 people at most. There were 2 waiters and 1 host/hostess that was walking around and the hostess seated me quickly in a booth and gave me a menu. About 10 minutes later a server came by with a basket of chips and salsa for my table and the table behind me and then my boyfriend came into the restaurant. There wasn't anyone who came by to check on my table or to bring us utensils/plates/napkins for us to eat the chips and salsas. finally a guy came by our table to ask if we were ready to order (after about 20 minutes from when my boyfriend came into the restaurant) and asked what we'd like to order for food. I ordered the beef fajitas and my boyfriend ordered the mole enchiladas. We also asked him for another cup of water for my boyfriend and plates/utensils/napkins. after he walked away, my boyfriend and I wanted to order a queso and so when he came back with our plates he put in the order for a queso and a strawberry margaritas and my boyfriend's beer. the queso came out fairly quickly but it looked like it was like velveta cheese with some beef on top and small bowl of jalapenos on the side. It was alright, but nothing really spectacular. The food came out about 30 minutes later and it was enjoyable. The food was good overall and the waiter did come by once more after we got our food to refill our water cups and see if everything came out correctly/well. Overall, for a slow night, service was sub-par. I would have liked to have better service especially on a slow night but the food was good and I did have great follow up from Frank with planning the party. We didn't end up going with La Hacienda for our company party but definitely will keep them in mind for any future gatherings- hopefully service will be improved and not what I experienced on the Tuesday Night.

Yelp
I've lived near La Hacienda for several years but have never tried it because of the uneven Yelp reviews. It's also located in an odd spot for a restaurant, buried in the neighborhood. If it weren't for the person they often have waving a sign on Ella and wearing a sombrero, I would forget about it. I finally went with my wife just to finally cross it off the list and was quite pleasantly surprised. The interior is spacious and festive. The staff was pleasant and efficient. My wife liked her skinny margarita and I my La Hacienda margarita. I tried the Veracruz Dinner because it was offered the basics which is a good was to gauge a Mexican restaurant - beef taco, cheese enchilada, tamale, rice, beans, and guacamole. Everything was fresh, well prepared, and tasty. My wife had the Pollo Loco, marinated and broiled chicken. It was delicious. And as a bonus, the rest rooms were pretty nice! I recommend La Hacienda and I will go back.

Yelp
Service is good. Not a lot of people during lunch time. The salsas are very tasty! The green is served cold and red is hot! I sat outside and got bitten by mosquitoes, but that's not their fault taco salad is good & margs too!
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem on the Northside and I'm so glad I found it the food was delicious the staff there is super friendly. The atmosphere will keep your head spinning as you look around and start to question if you have been teleported from Houston to Mexico or as if you are in a scene from the movie COCO. I will definitely be going back I had my eye on the mole enchiladas but I decided to try the Asado de Puerco and it was delicious also almost forgot the tortillas are handmade there and if you look over by the bar you can see the lady making them. 10 out of 10 if you want a different experience check them out
google avatar

Anthony K.

Yelp
Check this out, for a temporary period of time, it is happy hour all day, every day. The lunch specials are well priced and delicious. I had suize enchiladas: two chicken filled enchiladas with a cheese and sour cream sauce, grilled veggies, a small side salad, and rice/beans. All this for only $8.50! On the way out, look for a stainless steel container at the exit. There are complimentary buenelos, sweet and crunchy. Yummy!

Allie K.

Yelp
We love La Hacienda. The best cheese enchiladas in the city. Always great service, and you can't beat the ambience.
google avatar

Alfonso D.

Yelp
Best Tex-Mex in town. Enough said. It is owned by a man that started from scratch and has made his mark; the food, service and decor are great.
google avatar

Goose G.

Yelp
Queso Perfecto Salsa Perfecto We had the Chicken, Beef and Pork Fajitas they were really good. Queso got the thumbs up from the crew. Only draw back was the Margarita's way over priced for something that tasted like zero alcohol. If we go back it's back to beer, at least you know what your getting.
google avatar

Linette P.

Yelp
I felt like I was in a Disney movie I believe it's called Coco. Everything about the restaurant is magical the scenery the Decour the ambience and the service is amazing and welcoming. I had the menudo here and I wish I could say that it was the best I've ever had but that wouldn't be true. What I could say is that it's worth a trip here and I'm sure if you have picky people in your group there's some thing on the menu for everyone. Gracias!
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
Food was pretty typical, service was adequate, but not memorable. Salsa was good, chips tasted as if the oil that the chips were fried in was broken down(old). We are in Texas, and Mexican food should be really good. Will not go back, too many outstanding Mexican restaurants available to us.
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
This place was excellent! My family and I all agreed this was one of the best dining experiences we've had during our visit in Houston. Our server Brenda was excellent & very kind. Definitely a hidden gem :) the food was excellent and the portions were generous. The tortillas were handmade there & we would receive it quite quickly whenever we asked for more. As a vegetarian, there were plenty of options I could've gone with but I decided on the Santa Maria plate. The pina coladas were very sweet but satisfied my sweet tooth. I'll have to come back here whenever I'm in Houston!
google avatar

Anna Lee T.

Yelp
The food and service were very good but the portions are small. Tony's down the way serves you an adequate amount.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful interior. Staff is cordial and attentive. Food is always warm & tasty! We had a Enchilada Plate today and more.

Yelp
Great little hidden gem in the very northern heights area. Was looking a few weeks ago for a spot to try that I hadn't been to yet when we came across this on the map feature. Hadn't seen or heard of it before so thought what the heck... been back several times. They have a pretty extensive menu but the combos meals are perfect and provide a different variety of things to try each time. Note: the combos don't come with rice and beans so if you want that, make sure to add it on for a few bucks. There is plenty of seating in here and the staff has always been friendly and attentive. Will definitely keep coming back at this rate. Worth a shot if you are looking for a quiet, good, and reasonably priced place.

Terry M.

Yelp
Service was horrible. We ordered over one hundred dollars worth of food delivered and it was all wrong.

Ernesto H.

Yelp
Food didn't look appetizing when brought to table . Avocados slices were completely black . Vegetables were over cooked, They looked like they were yesterday's leftovers, restaurant had just opened; what does that tell you. Beans have no flavor, need a new recipe. I ended paying $16.00 for eating three pieces of chicken breasts.
google avatar

bridget m.

Yelp
medicore food, subpar service. the server who gave us the food were RUDE and gave attitude when I asked a simple question about my food. Not all of the staff members were rude though. Food was bland tasted like it was made 10 hours ago and they reheated it in the microwave. I admit the building gives off a nice vibe but over all my experience wasn't great.
google avatar

Dorothy L.

Yelp
If you are looking for a dessert that is "to live for" you have got to go the La Hacienda on W 26th street in Houston. Besides having the best pork fajitas they have a dessert called Fried Ice Cream. It's only $5 . The two of us couldn't finish it! Yum!

Alena B.

Yelp
I have been here twice and both times, I had a wonderful experience. The staff is very kind & attentive. From the host, to the waiter, the person who filled my water & the person who bussed the table. Each person was very friendly and helpful. The food was bussin, too. The complimentary chips and warm salsa. Yum! Last time I ordered quail from the chefs special. I've never had quail before. It was delicious - fried. Today I had the veggie fajita and added beef. So good!! Nice variety of veggies there & cooked well. The beef was marinated so well too. Very tender and flavorful. The charro beans that came with it were so good I drank bean juice.

Conner C.

Yelp
Totally awesome environment, some of the best service I have seen, sitting at the table now waiting for food, but had to comment on how fast and comfortable my experience has been so far.
google avatar

Diane K.

Yelp
I thought that an update was in order for this restaurant. They now have a happy hour, Monday-Friday, 3-7pm, margaritas and beer. Seeing this on a neighborhood website, I returned here after more than a four-year absence. The margaritas are good, as is the Tex-Mex. Here, you can order the margaritas by the glass or by the pitcher...how thirsty are you??? :-) The decor is nice and tastefully Mexican, this is a stand-alone building and I like the atmosphere, it's not cheesy. I find it distasteful to eat in other Mexican restaurants that are in a strip center that have that strip center appearance when you go inside. Not the case here. This location is almost like a hidden treasure, it is tucked inside the Shady Acres neighborhood, on a side street, rather than on a busy thoroughfare. Finally, I like that your chips and salsa are kept refilled without having to beg for more. I will be back.

Terry B.

Yelp
This place is a trip. Two stories of wrought iron and tiles and general funkiness. The food is good too, a warm red salsa and a cold tomatillo were the sauces. Chips were acceptable. Food is classic TexMex,no complaints and all menu items are probably pretty good...

Yelp
My first time here it was great everyone was nice , friendly ,very beautiful decorated ,food was delicious and fast service highly recommend this restaurant I will be returning

Yelp
Was asked to meet a friend here. Incredibly disappointing. Man who took us to table had mask on, but down under his chin. Tortilla chips were rancid. Margarita was good. Quesadilla had a weird, refrigerator taste. Told waiter who acted upset at the comment. He went and told the guy with mask down under his chin. They charged me half of quesadilla price. Waitstaff were rude and the whole experience was a huge turnoff. They do not even pretend to care about the customers and the food was horrible.
