No-frills, order-at-the-counter Latin American joint with a large juice selection & minimal seating.
"Grab a stool at La Isla Cuchifritos in Williamsburg and enjoy a majestic view of alcapurrias, rellenos de papa, and bacalaitos piled up in the window. Order at least one of those crunchy fried foods, then get a plate of pernil with rice and beans, which will set you back around $12. The tiny room looks like a retro luncheonette, and service is quick and casual, with plenty of folks popping in to grab takeout orders of mofongo and chicharrón. "Cuchifritos will obviously be part of your order at this Williamsburg restaurant. Located under the elevated M train’s Flushing station, La Isla Cuchifritos has been around since 1960, and it’s a great place to stop for fried pork, ears, tongue, and sweet plantain. You should also try the rotisserie chicken, which you can enjoy sitting on a stool at the restaurant’s blue counter." - marisel salazar, bryan kim
"An oasis under Williamsburg's elevated train tracks, La Isla is a casual Puerto Rican spot smaller than a subway car, with a couple of stools and mounds of fried food on display. We were initially drawn here for the cuchifritos, but the best bites actually come from other parts of the menu. The rotisserie half chicken easily outperforms its $7 price tag, and the pernil—served by the pound—is truly excellent. Top everything off with a side of sweet plantains, and you'll have a roughly $20 meal for two worth celebrating. And by celebrating, we mean ordering the fried pork stomach and bacalaitos to take for the ride home." - Team Infatuation
