The Newest Restaurants In Philadelphia - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"La Jefa comes from the team behind Rittenhouse institution, Tequila’s—in fact, they share a kitchen. For now, La Jefa is a daytime café with a menu of Mexican espresso drinks and food options like chilaquiles, barbacoa sandwiches, and house-baked concha (dinner will roll out later). There’s also a cocktail menu if you’re a three-micheladas-with-brunch kind of person. We checked out La Jefa and added it to the Hit List." - candis mclean, alison kessler

The Spots Of The Summer, Philly Edition - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"An issue with brunch in this town is it’s (almost) never boozy enough. Enter La Jefa, the new all-day cafe and restaurant from the team behind Tequila’s. It’s chic and sexy, and takes its breakfast cocktails and coffee as seriously as its conchas. And if you can’t make it in the AM, go for date night—split the aguachile, carnitas vampiro, and a few of those stunning drinks." - alison kessler, candis mclean

Best New Restaurants in Philly Right Now | Eater Philly

"After a fire-related two-year closure that resulted in a full redesign, Tequilas is back and better than ever. You’ll find classic Mexican dishes like Caesar salad (which was founded in Tijuana), cochinita, chile relleno, enchiladas suizas, and more. Newly opened sibling La Jefa serves food the team is calling Guadaladelphian, which explores culinary connections between Philly and Guadalajara. Think lonches, which are big Mexican sandwiches, plus Mexican coffee, fresh-pressed fluffy juices, and all-day natural wines. In the evening, the space transforms into one of the most ambitious cocktail bars in Philly." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

La Jefa nails all-day coffee, cocktails and conchas - Review - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Rittenhouse’s La Jefa opened with a lot of anticipation—after all, it’s the sibling of the beautiful (and much-beloved) Tequila’s. By day, this cafe stands out on its own thanks to its fantastic Mexican-inspired breakfast, baked goods, and yes, cocktails (the Green Apple Garibaldi being our favorite). The sit-down menu is full of hits: chilaquiles with pickled ayocote, an oat and fruit bowl punched up by turmeric milk, and a zesty zucchini sandwich topped with cilantro pesto and pepper relish. You’ll want to lounge for an hour or two in the airy, tile-filled dining room, but if you have to take your totomoxtle latte to go, be sure to grab a blackberry concha, too (the pastries here are knockouts). photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Pause Unmute Come nightfall, the lights go dim and the music borders on clubstaurant volume, especially in Jefa Milpa, the brooding secondary dining room in the back. It's a perfect place for a sexy date—dishes are ideal for sharing with just one other person. Skip the larger plates in the fuertes section of the menu altogether and opt for a snacky dinner of starters: the shrimp aguachile and ceviche blanco are punchy, the carnitas vampiro are served with a silky guacachile, and you'll fight over the last of the caesar slaw with the taco dorado. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Alison Kessler photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Pause Unmute Not to be outdone by the food are the cocktails, which are among some of the most interesting—and delicious—in the city. If you don't have time to come here for a full meal, make the effort to at least try the Raspado with fermented guava, the Calabaza with butter-washed paranubes añejo, or the creamy, masa-syrup topped Maiz. It's worth the 15-minute wait time, and then some. But then again, almost everything here is. Food Rundown Cocktails You probably won't recognize about half of the ingredients listed on the cocktail menu. That doesn't matter. You could close your eyes, point, and we can guarantee you'll be happy with what they serve you. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Baked Goods These options change daily, but we haven't had a bad one yet. Pictured here is the delicate, perfectly sweet blackberry concha, which is our favorite thus far. But if the chocolate mole cookie is available, you want one of those, too. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Chilaquiles La Jefa turns their chilaquiles inside out—the tortillas, pickled ayocote beans, and red onions are all tucked inside a perfect omelet. It's satisfying without being heavy, and the best egg dish here. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Pastrami de Lengua We've never had pastrami like this before. The house-cured meat is topped with a spicy chili mayo, but works perfectly thanks to the cool and crunchy coleslaw. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo Taco Dorado de Barbacoa The consomme is fantastic—smooth, thicker than most, and savory. But the tacos themselves are wrapped in a too-thick shell, totally overpowering the meat inside. Skip these and opt for the Taco Dorado de Rajas instead. photo credit: Nicole Guglielmo" - Alison B. I almost hate to rave about this place because it'll be harder to eat here in the future, but this deserves a rave regardless. The food and drinks are rooted in Mexican tradition but driven by creativity, and if you want an amazing meal that will push what you consider traditional Mexican fare, this is the spot for you. The waitstaff are so welcoming and lovely, and the bartenders and chefs deliver such delicious and creative food and drinks. It's one more awesome Mexican restaurant in Philly, and the city is better for the more there are!

Three of us went here for brunch on a Saturday and enjoyed it immensely. They manage to mix excellent coffee and authentic Mexican dishes with a few inventive Mexican-American mashups. We had the enmoladas, the beef tongue Reuben, and another dish from Guadalajara that I’d never tried before. I’d recommend any of them, they’re amazing flavor wise. One of my marks of quality is when a restaurant is generous with the sauce and doesn’t water down the mole. This place wins on both accounts. Coffee-wise they have selections from small Mexican producers that you likely won’t find anywhere else in the US. These offerings tend to be sweet and fruity, closer to what you expect from an African coffee than typical Central American coffee. Looking forward to our next visit when we return to Philly.

I NEVER write reviews but I have to write one for this incredible restaurant/cafe. I have been to a good number of restaurants and coffeeshops in Philly over the last eight years and I can confidently say that this is the best restaurant I’ve been to in Philly. It felt more like an experience than just brunch. The ambiance is unmatched, which is something that is really important to me. You can see that they spent so much time on making the space perfect. The owner seems to have a very clear vision. The service is top notch - I was struggling to cut my sandwich for two seconds and the waitress brought me a sharper knife immediately without me even saying anything. Everyone was incredibly kind and knowledgeable about the food/drinks. The food is so creative and tasty. There is no other place like this in Philly. Even the menu had details and impressive art on it. Go there now and you won’t regret it.

This is one of my favorite coffee places. I love it when they do half bar half coffee shop - it makes sence with the hours both would be open and they lean into it well. The warm and detailed atmosphere has nice touches thay play well as a bar and as a coffee shop. The coffee itself is creamy and rich and they have some of my favorite specialty coffee as well. We got the corn specialty drink and it worked surprisingly well. The staff is super friendly as well. They helped us with anything that we needed and we're quick to a recommendation. I wasnt here long enough for their bar to open but it seems like a great spot.

While only open for a week, this place has become a new favorite. So far they are just open for coffee and brunch/lunch but plans to expand to dinner service soon! I love the Tottomoxtle Latte, all the breakfast items and the green apple cocktail!

Recently dined at La Jefa and had an outstanding experience—highly recommended for anyone seeking unique, authentic Mexican flavors. The atmosphere was lively, and the service was warm and personal. We had the pleasure of meeting Dan, the owner, who was incredibly welcoming and offered excellent recommendations rooted in the cuisine of Guadalajara, Mexico. A memorable moment: the staff sang a birthday wish in Spanish, complete with a celebratory shot delivered directly to the guest’s mouth—fun and full of personality! What We Tried: • Cecina – House-made beef jerky served with the most flavorful guacamole I’ve ever had and pickled chilies. Truly unforgettable. • Quesadilla Negra – Calamari, quesillo, and a blistered chile mayo wrapped in a blackened tortilla. Unique and delicious. • Tetela de Plátano Macha – A fantastic blend of masa, plantain purée, and pipián verde. The creamy sauce was a perfect complement. • Drinks – The Paloma and Tinto de Verona were expertly mixed and refreshingly perfect for a hot day. • Wine – The chilled Hurluberlu Cabernet Franc was a surprisingly excellent wine choice—light, bright, and very enjoyable. • Dessert – The Lemon Cake with lemon curd, guajillo jelly, and toasted meringue was a standout finish. Crisp crust, vibrant filling—just phenomenal. Overall, La Jefa delivered a memorable culinary journey with standout flavors and vibrant hospitality. Can’t wait to return.

Really great spot. Living close by I feel like I’ve been missing out. The service is some of the best I’ve had in the city. My server, Shaq, was really friendly and super professional (as was all the staff from what I could tell). Everything I ordered was really well done (kudos to the kitchen). I’d highly recommend checking this spot out.

Actual magic. The only thing I can’t believe is that they are only open for brunch / lunch. They cafe / coffee drink selection is insane. Simple yet interesting twists on coffee based drinks. Ridiculously good. Fresh fruit, and breakfast sandos that were incredible. Great service, music, decor everything you think of. Can’t wait to visit and try everything else on the menu.
