Where to Eat the Best Tacos in Nashville | Eater Nashville

"This unassuming orange building in the Nations serves some of Nashville’s top tacos. Owners Jose and Maria Cepeda also welcome diners (he takes orders, she cooks) with solid pupusas and tlayudas (a traditional Oaxacan dish served on a toasted tortilla loaded up with toppings) that only add to the appeal. Ask for the chili and the verde sauces; both are nicely spicy. Just remember to bring cash." - Ellen Fort

Best Mexican Restaurants in Nashville, Tennessee | Eater Nashville

"Owners Jose and Maria Cepeda cook up fabulous tacos, pupusas, and tlayudas out of a small unassuming red and orange concrete block building in the Nations. It’s a saucy spot that’s decked out with earthy Mexican wares. You’ll want to check out La Juquilita’s rich Oaxacan mole and spicy chile and verde salsas in dishes like the chicken mole enchiladas and a machete. You can also place your order online for delivery or pick up." - Clara Wang

Where to Eat in The Nations | Eater Nashville

"A local favorite and repeat mention on the Essential 38 list, this unassuming taqueria is terrific. Expect homemade dishes with simple flavors and ingredients, and fill up on tacos, tortas, empanadas, and burritos for less than ten bucks. It is no surprise that the no-frills family establishment only takes cash and doesn’t serve booze. Plan accordingly." - Kellie Walton

A tiny Nations eatery with Oaxacan soul—think tlayudas, mole, and weekend specials. Eater Nashville includes it among the city’s best Mexican restaurants; Axios Nashville readers call out the caldo de res as a standout.

Don't go by the outside appearance, inside is traditional Mexican goodness! I had two chicken tacos made in the traditional style. Some Americans might refer to them as street tacos. Simple ingredients, flavorful mildly spiced Chicken, cilantro, onions and lime. $6.00 for two. I specifically requested nothing hot spicy and these Tacos were perfect for me. The menu offers a great variety of options, and you can choose to dine in or take out.

Google
Family owned spot. They take time in preparing their food. At first my thought was gosh they are expensive to be such a small place, but then when I received my food, it was alot of food. Very well prepared. This is true authentic food.

Google
Small local business. I was disappointed that they provided inexpensive plastic forks and knives. Menu is very limited and food was good but certainly wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

Daniel Veliciu

Google
It doesn’t get more authentic than this! One of the best taco joints in Nashville!

Diane Stewart

Google
We ordered take out. The food is delicious. Everything is seasoned to perfection. Food is reasonably priced and serving size is reasonable. The place is small, so it is not recommended for groups.

nikkisus

Google
It definitely is authentic mexican food and the place has such a nice feel to it. The food is delicious and fair price for the amount of food you receive. The tlayuda is my go-to and is big enough to share with 2-3 people. Only word of caution is there are no prices listed so it’s best to ask before to avoid confusion when it’s time to pay.

Google
An amazing hole-in-the-wall place with amazing food and rolls of paper towels on the tables. Get a machete or the mole. You'll thank me.

Google
It's a cozy and homey place with food that is very well made. One of the best places that I have stumbled upon in Nashville that gives affordable Spanish/Mexican food. The atmosphere is very earthy and might not be chic. But the food is definitely worth it. It's a good option for a quick bite and satisfying Spanish/Mexican food. Will recommend to friends and family.

Yelp
Thank you Taquería la Jaquilita for my thanksgiving lunch while being away from family. A couple friends and I walked in to grab a quick take away lunch. We got pupusas and tacos to share. The pupusas were so good! I am such a fan and always forget how much I love them. The tacos were traditional street tacos, the best way to have a taco. Double wrapped corn tortilla, meat, cilantro, and onion. Pretty affordable and really friendly service!

Yelp
Real Mexican food. Really nice bakery. I will be back. I need 85 characters or they won't let me post this.

Yelp
I'm not sure which one of my buddies recommended this "hole in the wall" gem, but bless you. Be patient with the staff, all of them don't speak English fluently, but are very kind. I grabbed a few tacos and added a side of rice & beans. I was excited that they served black beans versus the traditional refried. The steak was good, but per usual I liked the chicken a little better. The food tasted like it was cooked with love. There is limited seating inside but enough room to enjoy a quick bite comfortably.

Yelp
I don't have pictures to add because the food was SO good it was gone before I could remember to take one. As an out of town visitor staying in an area rental, I didn't think much of this place after passing, it is very unassuming. I read a review and it made me want to stop in, so glad I did. We tried multiple things and their tacos are an easy obvious choice, but these authentic street tacos were truly some of the best I've ever had. The Gordita's were also a tie for first and you get three with an order - try all the meats! Pastor was my fav liege and carnitas were amazing too. Everything was so flavorful and I wish I could say I will be a regular but maybe we'll be back to Nashville soon!

Yelp
Nothing quite like a down and dirty Mexican restaurant, right? Taqueria Juquilita is a bright orange building on Morrow in the Urbandale section of the Nations. As you walk in, you see a beverage cooler to the right along with a big open window where you can see them cook. To the right area a handful of tables and the requisite Mexican candles and statues. This joint focuses on Oaxacan food, which is a bit different from the typical border and/or Jalisco food normally seen in the United States. Oxaca is the place where mole originated and they have a mole or two on the menu. I did not try the mole, so I cannot vouch, but the rest of the food gets a definite thumbs up. When you first look at the menu, you are probably going to think "awfully expensive for a low rent Mexican place". But, the price is a bit deceiving. The portions are enough to make a big man (like me?) say "I need a to go box". I did not and I paid for it later. :D I grabbed the tlayuda, because I tend to grab something I am completely clueless about when I try a new place. What is it, you ask? Let me tell you. It is a large baked flour tortilla topped with refried black beans and melted Oaxacan cheese. It is baked a bit more and then topped with steak, shredded cabbage, tomatoes, and avocado. My friend had the shrimp tacos, which had an ample amount of boiled shrimp on top. The food tasted great. My only complaint is against me for eating the entire tlayuda. I think I went into a food coma. LOL Definitely recommend for authentic Mexican food, with the realization the dishes will be a bit different than your standard Mexican fare in the US. Reminded me of my last trip to Mexico, even though that was Guanajuato (north of Mexico City) instead of Oaxaca (south).

Yelp
I was scrolling through my Yelp collections, looking for a good Latin restaurant. So glad I found this save from forever ago! We walked into the small store and the people quickly set out a table and chairs for my party of 6. We came at 3 in the afternoon, and they were super accommodating, given they were taking a rest in the dead period. Ordering is manageable without speaking Spanish, but I definitely felt things were better communicated when I was speaking Spanish. We ordered agua de jamaica, pupusas, burritos, empanadas, and tacos. Everything hit SO GOOD. I legitimately did not think Nashville had this quality of Mexican cuisine. It's so fire!!! The food came out within a reasonable time and it was piping hot. The flavors were explosive and unique -- I could tell they were from a part of Mexico I'm not familiar with, but I hope to get familiar. Out of all the food, my favorite had to be my singular barbacoa taco. I think they actually used lamb, which is my favorite. Finally, to be able to wash down everything with my tart agua de jamaica. That's what dreams are made of! Apart from the good service, the staff went above and beyond when my mother ingested too much salsa roja and her mouth was burning (LOL). They ended up bringing my family a quarter of a watermelon to enjoy and help my mom's mouth. Such a cute gesture. I can't wait to bring all my friends here!

Yelp
Las aguas naturales, postres ricos y Los tacos están bien bergas !!!. Vale la pena ir a comer

Yelp
The food is decent, but it is a bit pricey. You do get pretty big portions though. For 3 meals and 3 drinks we paid about $55. The hot sauces were real spicy but had good flavor. The chicken tacos were definitely tasty and well seasoned. The asada tacos were okay nothing special and a bit dry. We also got a huitlacoche quesadilla which was good, but wasn't stuffed evenly no biggie. We also got a lengua huarache. The tortilla base was tasty , but the lengua itself did not have much flavor. Overall the place was decent I'd come back to try other things and meats on the menu.

Yelp
Portions are huge but sloppily put together. Ordered a burrito that was folded, not wrapped, in foil so much that I pulled out bits of foil as I was eating. The burrito fell apart. Flavors were okay but there's better choices for the price of $13. "Burrito" comes with rice, black beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, cilantro and onions. Would not try again.

Yelp
La Juquilita was such a welcome surprise with a friend just this last weekend. When my friend offered to pick up from this taqueria, I immediately began scoping out all the amazing offerings other Yelpers had posted. We ended up with a massive order of horchata, asada tacos, carinita tacos, and chicken gorditas. While there was some confusion with our order, the staff were efficient and able to get our food out piping hot. Please know that this is a cash only location, so make sure you prepare paper not plastic before heading over here. The horchata was creamy and refreshing; it tasted homemade rather than from a powder. It was a welcome reprieve from the spicy house salsa roja and tangy salsa verde I smothered into everything I ordered. Although I was full after about two to three tacos, I still craved more because of the excellent treatment of all the fixings. The meat was tender, the onions were crisp, the cilantro was fresh, and the corn tortillas held out under all the weight of the generous offerings. This is an excellent taqueria. The price is incredibly affordable, and I highly recommend you check out the hidden gem that is Juquilita.

Yelp
This spot is a hidden gem. On the west side of town the nations. I hadn't found any authentic Mexican on this side of town well this place is it. The food is delicious and so affordable. Make sure you bring cash because this place is cash only. I had the Tostadas de Camarón which I highly recommend it was fresh and tasty. I also had the tacos because I'm greedy lol Tacos you can't go wrong with if you can't decide what to order because they have plenty of choices. Next time I go I plan of trying the super taco. The place is small on the inside however it does have place for seating. There is ample parking in the front.
google avatar

Yelp
It is a hole in the wall joint like one might find in Central America ... the food is authentic and delicious. The green hot sauce definitely has a kick. I recommend d if you want authentic food of Mexico and Central America.
google avatar

Viviana M. R.

Yelp
This is hands down the rudest reception I've ever received in any food joint in Nashville. Walked out without ordering. So can't offer input about the quality. The tacos looked very yummy but there are way too many hole in the wall taco joints in this town to put up with a bad attitude. And cray cray expensive. Tacos very reasonable at $2, but enchiladas, sopes, empanadas $12 to $15 Never in SoCal, Texas, Arizona or Colorado have I seen a price this high for a hole in a wall joint that doesn't have real tables or table service. I mean it's a Taqueria. Even hipster Taquerias in LA don't have prices like that. So if you don't get put off by incredibly rude angry people taking your order try the food and let us know if it's worth nice restaurant prices. Maybe it is.
google avatar

Grace L.

Yelp
Might be my favorite place for tacos I've ever tried. You order as soon as you walk in and they only take cash. Absolutely authentic and a great experience
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
This place kicks ass. The most authentic Mexican you will find in nashville. No urban cantina kinda shit. Straight up good classic authentic Mexican food. Cash only, that green salsa was the hottest I've ever had in my life
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
This family owned taqueria is legit. Their freshly squeezed tamarind juice is to die for. Their portion sizes are massive and well deserving of their price tag. I couldn't finish my super taco and wrapped it up and finished it off later (it was still fantastic). They had a steady line of customers coming in for lunch but still followed covid protocols. It was my first time there but every single dish that came out I wanted to try. I was eyeing everyone's order and couldn't decide want I would get next time! If you don't speak Spanish, don't fret. Their English is good and the menu comes with pictures. If they weren't about to close, I'd go back for dinner because the meat just melted on your tongue (I got the carnitas). Times have been tough for them--the mama has breast cancer + 8 kids + covid slowing down business--but I'm so happy they've been able to pull through. Go support! Cash only. PSA: great first date location
google avatar

Ellis K.

Yelp
Incredible Mexican spot. This place had the best chicken mole I've ever had. The mole was rich and flavorful. It was thick, savory/sweet, almost chocolatey with hints of heat and spice. It was the perfect medley of flavors. The chicken was so juicy and falling off the bone. The tacos were authentic and came with just the meat and cilantro and onion. The meats were so good. The tongue was soft and tender. The al pastor was perfectly spiced. The pupusa was also amazing with a crisp exterior and oozing with delicious cheeses and refried beans. The restaurant is very unassuming and is in a neighborhood, not surrounded by shops/restaurants. When you walk in, you feel like you're walking into an authentic Mexican restaurant with the decor. Absolutely delicious food, everything was amazing. Would highly recommend this spot.
google avatar

Marcos N.

Yelp
Damn near cried after eating here. Coming from Houston, I had no expectation in finding a real Mexican restaurant, and going out and trying different places I was correct. Usually there is a twist on dishes to accommodate the American crowd. Yet this place stuck to its guns and is the most authentic I have been able to find yet. IYKYK they do not care about what you think of how they look or what their dishes look like to you.The food speaks for itself. I immediately called my mom to tell her about this gem and to show her my appreciation for feeding me and raising me the way she did. Since finding this place three days ago have eaten here everyday and possibly will continue to if at all possible.

Yelp
The restaurant is in a small little group of stores that's nestled in a largely residential neighborhood in the northwest corner of The Nations.    We came for a quick lunch.  I ordered a couple tacos and a pupusa.  The tacos were chock full of meat, onions, and cilantro.  The steak was better than the chicken. There were 2 different sauces, a green mild sauce and a red spicier sauce.  All tasty. The pupusa isn't quite what I'm used to at other places, where it's completely enclosed in a thin, pillowy dough.  This was more crispy, and split in the middle like a sandwich, then filled with meat and cheese.  There was also no cabbage and sauce specifically for it.  I like the other kind better.   It looks like one of their specialties is a tiayuda, sort of like a pizza, both in concept and size. It was $15 and there were only 2 of us, so maybe I'll try that next time.
google avatar

Emmy C.

Yelp
Best, most authentic Mexican food I've had in Nashville. Kind people as well. A little hole in the wall, but you won't be disappointed.
google avatar

Anthony F.

Yelp
The food was really good and the portions are large. But I have to give it a low score because of the questionable pricing. They painted over the menu on the orange wall and there are small numbers on a sign above which one would think are the prices. I ordered 10 dollars in food and was told to pay at the end. Somehow I was charged 18 dollars, which was awkward as it's cash only and I only had 15 dollars on me. There is also no nearby atm. I found some money in my car. But I'd recommend you bring an extra twenty dollar bill since you will get charged more than you think. As good as it was, I'll probably go to other nearby options with more transparent pricing or credit card payments.
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
Best authentic Mexican food ever. It's run by a family of people from Oaxaca (a state in southern Mexico) and the food is just Amazing. **Make sure to bring CASH**
google avatar

Kelly R.

Yelp
This place is so authentic and delicious! They are quick to serve your food and it all tastes so fresh. They have a wide variety of fresh juices and they green and red sauces are to die for! We always get ceviche tostadas and then choose another option. This restaurant is a must try in Nashville!
google avatar

Anthony S.

Yelp
Low-key Mexican place, 100% authentic, & 100% fantastic. It would benefit you if you spoke Spanish walking in here but if not, you'll be ok too. Try this place, you will not regret it and will remember it. I plan to come back even I return to the city for sure.
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Hands down best tacos in Nashville and best lengua I've ever had at a restaurant. Really well done.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Excellent hole in the wall place for authentic Mexican food in Nashville. It's cash only, and my wife believes it's family owner and operated... at least they have pictures of their family on the wall food was great, price even better-- I got the burrito with chicken and my wife got the chicken quesadilla and popusas. The fresh vegetables literally tasted like they were straight from the garden (with no post-Mexican food issues ), the flour tortilla was freshly toasted and definitely tasted homemade. If you like salsas, you definitely need to try theirs-- I personally like spicy but can't handle a lot of spice. I tasted both their green sauce and red sauce and both of them were WAY beyond my spice tolerance, HOWEVER I was still able to taste what felt like a mole-creamy texture in the red and the freshness of the green. I was sad to miss out on what could be the best salsa ever bc I simply couldn't handle its excellence. Maybe you can? Check it out!
google avatar

Carmen B.

Yelp
So glad I found this authentic delicious restaurant close to my house! The vibe inside is very nice, clean and good music! I ordered to go this time and everything was so good especially the flautas! The green salsa was best I've ever had too. Spicy and creamy. They also had a HUGE drink selection along with ice cream, candy etc. 10/10 would recommend and go back
google avatar

Sadie J.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to go in there for some Tacos and let me tell you they only Accept CASH so be ready, we Loved this place complete Mexican feel and decor and the food was by far one of the best I have had as far as authenticity
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
I love Mexican restaurants I could probably eat Mexican food every single day to be honest and that's also another reason why I'm fat but besides that I like this place and give you free chips and sauce so you can't go wrong with that I'll take that all the time and you know it's your typical Mexican joint I mean you can't really go wrong with it get some tacos free chips Lil burrito action not bad. All the prices are always about the same at every Mexican restaurant to go to don't matter if it's El Nopal or or what they're all basically the same and I like them. I probably spent thousands upon thousands of dollars in a little Mexican joints like this so I highly recommend
google avatar

Shaina R.

Yelp
Everything here is authentic and delicious! I'm a California transplant and this is the real deal. I got tacos de buche and carnitas. The salsa is spicy and great!
google avatar

Christine T.

Yelp
We are so excited to have a good Mexican food restaurant near Green Hills! Fantastic food. CASH only. I Also, think the guy that took our order didn't speak much English (our Spanish stinks) but they have pictures! We plan to eat our way through ALL the pictures.
google avatar

Tee Z.

Yelp
Absolutely, without question, the best Mexican in Nashville. Your classic hole in the wall joint in the middle of the nations neighborhood, servings are big, incredibly delicious, and very favorably priced. Do yourself a favor and find your way to West Nashville and check this place out
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
Chicken tacos were great! 4 come in an order. Perfect amount of onions and cilantro. Hot sauce was just enough spice. Cash only. I'll be back. Prob order to-go next time as the ambience inside wasn't anything to rave about.
google avatar

Patrick O.

Yelp
Nice food in a local hole in the wall. A little on the expensive side. Nice ambience with pleasant owner-chef. Recommended, bring cash.
google avatar

Dave C.

Yelp
This is how you do it. Baja Sexto whatever...you are a JOKE compared to this place. They are so nice, flavors are so tight. And NO hipster arrogance. Eat for $8 more than you can handle. Come here now...do yourself a favor!
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
This place was legit. People were friendly. Portions huge. My intention was to order a pupusa that was listed as $7 with pork and cheese (like I've had elsewhere), but I think a miscommunication gave us some other dish entirely, possibly one that was made up on the fly for $15. I'm not complaining, it essentially contained an entire avocado and a whole pork roast and was frigging delicious, I'm just not sure that was my intention or the intention of the staff. But it was a happy, delicious accident. Would totally come back here.
google avatar

Tanya R.

Yelp
Probably the best tacos on the west side! Affordable and authentic, everything on the menu is delicious. The green salsa brings everything together
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Awesome food, good prices, friendly staff. Everything tastes as it should. Lengua is prepared well. Surprise find in TN.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
Very happy with our experience. Fresh and authentic! Loved the shrimp tostada, papusa and chicken mole enchilada. The steak tyuladas wasn't as good as it looked in pictures, but probably because I'm not a big fan of beans. Don't forget cash only and byob. We will definitely come back!
google avatar

Peyton J.

Yelp
Simply amazing. We ate here for the first time last night (Friday) and we were the only people there. One of the ladies helped us with the menu and suggested a few things. We were totally opened to trying anything so we got a burrito (al pastor), three tacos (doesn't, carnitas, al pastor), and two empanadas (beef and chicken). EVERYTHING was barabacoa. I delicious loved the huge burrito (more than enough to split). All three of us eating left particularly stuffed for $23--crazy cheap for spectacular food and really kind service! Cant wait to go back and try more! Cinco de Mayo extremely event compare.
google avatar

Carrie P.

Yelp
This "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant is really awesome!! The food is fresh, homemade, and totally authentic! I ordered the Tlayuda with chicken and my boyfriend ordered 3 tacos. We also had two Papusas as an appetizer. They were all delicious!! The only downside, besides it almost being unrecognizable as a restaurant from the road, is that they don't have fountain drinks (my weakness). I'm pretty sure I can live with that since the food is so amazing though!! Check it out if you haven't already!

Dylan P.

Yelp
Hands down best food in Nashville. The best people. The best atmosphere. Order 4 Steak Tacos And grab yourself a Mandarin Jarritos Ask for the verde and chili sauce It comes with corn tortillas Cilantro and onion toppings The food is cooked by the mother of 4 children--whom you may see running around the restaurant and even checking you out at the register!
google avatar

Brad H.

Yelp
Delicious food, huge portions, and 100% legit. This place is great. I plan to go back and try more menu items soon. But I've already been telling people about it. If you want legit Central American food, this is a great option.
google avatar

Francesco R.

Yelp
absolutely authentic and rock bottom prices. The food was so good. There is a little wait since there seems to be just two people working there. But the food was terrific. So nice to support a couple trying to make it here in business.
google avatar

Debbie H.

Yelp
I came before 4 pm and it was closed, even though (online) it says they close at 8 pm. My family was pretty frustrated. I called and they said they are closed for the day... very strange. If you decide to go, make sure you call.
google avatar

Jeanne B.

Yelp
Had been reading about this place on my neighborhood listserv but still was surprised by the great quality. Menu is written on the wall, not sure the staff spoke English, but the food was wonderful. I had chicken enchiladas which I think came with a mole sauce (am no expert), my husband had beef tacos ($1.25 each). Our friends had burritos which were huge, fresh and tasty. No liquor license but folks seemed to be byob, no fountain drinks, no diet drinks. Very casual place, but I'm pretty sure there was a model or actress at the next table. Place was full but not crowded, majority of patrons seemed pretty upscale but relaxed. Prices could be doubled and no questions would arise. Watching the plates that went by, I thought everything looked great and I definitely want to try more dishes.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
What a great meal. The menu is painted on the wall. The staff greeted us with a guest check and took our order. While it's not written down, each of the menu items can come with either spicy pork, steak, chicken, tongue, beans or cheese (and probably some others..). We got two tacos (tongue and spicy pork), a cheese quesadilla with beans, a tlayudo (like a Mexican pizza, flour tortilla, thin slices of cabbage, frijoles, cheese, steak, fresh tomato and avocado), and chicken flautas. With 4 drinks, it was $30. Really a bargain- big portions of very well prepared food. The place was clean and inviting, the kitchen open, and staff were friendly and took time to explain things. They didn't have ceviche available at the time, but since it's Memorial Day weekend I appreciate that they might not have been able to get fresh fish and I would rather they not try and serve old raw fish.
google avatar

Lindsay H.

Yelp
This place is definitely a hidden gem. We came here with 4other friends and the staff was very inviting and sweet. We ordered the burrito, which was the little girl taking our order her favorite dish. The huaraches dish was awesome! Definitely worth checking out! Their green chile sauce is really good!
google avatar

Travis T.

Yelp
They initially said my meal was $30, then when I asked them to break down the cost of each item it came out to $15, then to save face they adjusted the cost of each item so the total cost was $26. The food was good, but I will not be going back. Horrible experience.
