Lá Kitchen Review - Clerkenwell - London - The Infatuation

"La Kitchen is a small and unpretentious Vietnamese spot on the Clerkenwell Road that’s perfect for when you’re after half an hour with your friend, or on your own, with a bowl of something tasty. This is a cheap and cheerful place: there are a few stools and tables to sit at, the bowls of pho and bun cha are under a tenner, and everything tastes solid - though don’t expect it to be the best Vietnamese you’ve ever had." - Jake Missing

Great Vietnamese food at great prices. Fast service and standard dining atmosphere. Monkfish summer roll tastes special, rich in vietnamese herbal flavour and I personally love it. Crispy pork belly rice is very crispy and flavoursome but a bit too salty to my taste - it goes really well with sriracha sauce if you like a bit of heat. The dried lemongrass chicken vermicelli noodle is nice too, however, my favourite bun noodle is still from BunBunBun.

Really good Vietnamese cafe with fresh and tasty food. We tried Beef Brisket Pho, fried noodles and spring rolls. Everything was really nice and with great value for money.

Cheap & cheerful authentic Vietnamese. Delicious pho, will definitely return. Quick service. Does get busy during the lunchtime rush but I managed to beat it and get a small table on the corner. I noticed dirty napkins on the tables, hygiene isn’t impeccable but this adds to the no frills charm..

While the outside of the building looks like a regular takeaway, internally the restaurant is well decorated with a clean look. The food is good value for money though I personally found it a little bland, but they do provide sauces to spice it up.

I love this place so much, I’ve been dining here almost weekly for roughly a year now and I never get bored of it! I am only giving 4 stars as lately I feel it’s lost a bit of its flare - the bean sprout, lime and chilli dish you usually receive with your Phó has decreased in size and doesn’t seem as fresh (might just have Been like that that day) and unfortunately the fresh spring rolls (particularly the ones with tiger prawn - my favourite), have stayed at the same price, yet instead of two “whole” prawns, you get one, butterflied in half - meaning that you don’t even really taste it. You also used to get water brought to your table but now you just have to weasel around the other guests to pick up some water (it isn’t the end of the world but I always appreciated the kind gesture). Generally the flavour of the soup, sauces and rolls is amazing! And for an amazing price (not only compared to London standards). I highly recommend this place to anyone needing a hearty little pick me up after work, when it’s raining or even just as a little treat during the week. P.s. strongly reccomend the rare beef pho - actually gets to you with rare pieces and u can even get double the beef for £1 more! - and don’t be shy with the siracha sauce by the end of the soup if you’ve never tried it, it really adds a kick

£6 for a bland small portion: 3 veg spring rolls, noodles (smell weird like stored in a drain or reheated - 2 ppl confirmed the strange smell) & salad. Leather lane has better and cheaper

Speedy service and great food for a reasonable price! I go quite often and always order the Prawn Lemongrass (delicious and a big portion). You can also BYOB. Beware that the opening times on Google maps are incorrect, I uploaded a picture with the right ones :)

Yelp
Really solid place and probably the best I've found in my area so far. This restaurant is super small, but has a lot of really good options for everyone. I've been twice and have tried a little bit of everything. Highlights: Their Banh Mi's are SUPER good. The baguettes are nice and crusty and the sandwiches are super flavorful. Their summer rolls and spring rolls are delicious if you're looking for something small. Downside: I'm not obsessed with their pho. I've had really delicious pho in the states even vegetarian pho. Their pho is not bad my any means, it just lacks a bit of the oomph. You have to ask for hoisin sauce and it's super watery. Also I'm used to a plate full of fragrant and delicious herbs (specifically basil!!!) but there was only a little bit of those herbs. The noodles used are way too thick for pho and it does change the experience for me.

Yelp
Yes! La Vietnamese has now replaced whatever that godforsaken sorry excuse for a "burrito" place was. Whatever it was, it was not good. But, La = GOOD! Based on Bethany W's rave review I headed over here for a midweek lunch. I enjoyed the chicken pho (wonderfully rich broth) and the prawn summer rolls (lovely). Throw in a Vietnamese iced tea, and I was set to jet for the rest of the day for about a tenner. They have indoor seating (1 table upstairs and more downstairs) and a little garden seating when the weather cooperates. Cash and cards accepted. Very friendly staff. Add it to your lunch rotation Clerkendwellers!

Yelp
I'm excited. Very excited. Why you ask? Well... 1. I found a new business 2. That business is two minutes from my office 3. That business sells food at reasonable/cheap prices. 4 The food is AMAZING. Yes, AMAZING! Wandering along and spotted La, the Vietnamese kitchen and even though it was a hot sunny day my love for Vietnamese and noodles could not be stopped! I was greet by two wonderfully friendly waitresses who guided me through and explained the menu. After changing my mind 3 times I finally decided on the grilled monkfish bun noodle soup (£7.90) and the prawn summer rolls (£4). Today I was taking away but they have a small indoor seating area AND a very cute little garden at the back with 3 tables. Love it. I was given my food with a smile and headed back to the office with a spring in my step. You know what I'm going to say...WOW. The summer rolls to start were huge, absolutely stuffed to the brim with filling including mint which was a nice addition. The prawns inside were also huge and they were served with a delicious plum sauce dip. Possibly the best spring rolls I've had. Now to the best part. My oh my. SO MUCH monkfish which was beautifully cooked and had a great taste. This combined with plenty of round noodles, tomatoes, bean sprouts, onions and chilli - all in a wonderful and rich slightly sweet and sour broth. Truly fantastic! I slurped every mouthful and even had to tip the pot in my mouth in the end! I've found my new lunch spot and I can't wait to try more of their menu. I told you I was excited!!

Yelp
Really really enjoyed this lunch here - in fact anywhere that sells fresh and authentic Vietnamese cuisine is a winner in my book. A few great yelp reviews meant I had to try it and I wasn't let down at all. The lovely staff served me a delightful monkfish Banh Mi to go (a large crusty sandwich filled with salad, chosen meat/fish and hot sauce/chilies) and for good measure I through in some fresh prawn spring rolls - so so good! And all so reasonably priced for this part of London - around £8 for lunch and worth every bite. Really great option - check it out soon!

Yelp
Broth is very good. Food comes fast and delicious! High quality pho in farringdon. I often find hole in the wall restaurant (expecially asian) have the best food. This is one of those

Yelp
We had Spring Rolls, a Rice Box and Pho. Spring Rolls were OK. But Rice Box and Pho was not enjoyable for us. Didn't finished both. Service is OK.

Yelp
Nice space and definite improvement on burrito place, but overall not impressed with the vegetarian offerings here. This review is solely based on my experience as a vegetarian. The staff here seemed friendly and the space is fine; it was very empty when we came in. There is one table near the counter, there's also a garden area though I didn't even look at this as it was cold outside. We ate downstairs which was empty. The veggie pho was unfortunately pretty bland. Maybe for the carnivores the broth is more fragrant, but my partner and I couldn't taste any cloves, star anise, or any spice for that matter in the veggie broth. It tastes like a weak tomato-based minestrone broth, a strange combination with the rice noodles and (very good) tofu). I can't remember the exact figure, but the veggie pho here cost around £6.50, an average price in this part of town. For £1 or so less you can go to Dragonfly nearby and get a deliciously flavoursome vegetarian pho that doesn't cut corners.

Yelp
The food in here always makes me happy about the taste and quality. When i come to London, of course, La is my first choice to try Vietnamese food. Amazing guys, good job!!

Yelp
Better than any pho I've had in NYC. Plenty of seating and very clean bathrooms. Very authentic, owned and operated by vietnamese.

Yelp
Delicious food & great vegetarian options. Very good value for money too. The tofu lemongrass is delicious!

Yelp
Two of us visited late on a Friday evening. I remember the food in Vietnam from a trip in 2002 - everything finely chopped, up to the second fresh and lovely herbs and spices. I have tried a few Vietnamese restaurants in London including one in Hoxton but this was the first one that took me and dumped me back in the country. Beautiful summer rolls in rice paper with chopped shoots and vegetables and a tiny but very tasty piece of pork. My friend had the Noodle Soup with Beef, Garlic and Celery. Again, lovely, tasty and lifted by the fresh herbs.

Mary V.

Yelp
This is a small cafe catering for the lunch time rush, however, the food is quality and perhaps equally delicious if not more than the other Vietnamese restaurants in Hoxton. The banh mi is really good, the best one is the La classic. The pho there is recommended as the soup is fresh and clear, not to mention flavoursome. I have struggled to find good Viet places to eat ever since I moved to London. For those who loves Pho, you have to give this place a go. Will be going there tonight for dinner.

Yelp
used to be a regular but had a shocker today. multiple mix ups with my order then my meal came out with dirty bits of salad. i won't be going back
