Inside La Loulou, the New French Spot on Oakland’s Piedmont Avenue | Eater SF

"On a trip to Paris, owner Lou Beraud had a sad epiphany about missing the affordable, charming restaurants foundational to the City of Lights: “We went to [Parisian restaurant] Bouillon Chartier and realized that there was no place like that in Oakland,” says Beraud. That realization led her to open a little wine bar where people could come and enjoy wines from around the world, small plates of food and companionship; it opens Saturday, May 10. The space is fanciful and belle époque–inspired, with a deep golden accent color “reminiscent of a popular French champagne label” showing up on curving Art Nouveau details framing the bar, the mirrors, the doors, and the hand painted artwork on the front window; vivid color, feathery ceiling lights that “evoke can-can dancers,” touches of deep magenta, and an opulent emerald green on tile and velvety channeled banquettes complete the look. Her husband Peter Andreoni, a contractor who specializes in custom woodwork, created many of the curved flourishes that frame mirrors and doorways. The soundtrack runs from Josephine Baker’s “J’ai Deux Amours” and “La Vie en Rose” to modern artists like L.E.J., Bon Entendeur, and Stromae. Beraud, who worked for Champagne Cristal and sold French wines in Silicon Valley with the distributor Planet Wine, built a wine list rooted in France (70 to 80 percent sourced from regions including Loire, Burgundy, Languedoc-Roussillon, and Bordeaux) while also representing California and Italy; there are quirky bottles like the Moroccan-made Syrah called Sirocco from Alain Graillot and natural-wine selections such as 23 Monje, “an orange skin-fermented blend of organic grapes including French Colombard and Gewürztraminer from Santa Cruz. It smells like lychee and pink grapefruit.” “It’s an orange wine, but not a weird orange wine,” Beraud says. Besides a rotating list of wines by the glass, about 100 selections can be purchased by the bottle to enjoy on site or take home, with plans to expand to 200 or 300 and to offer educational events: “I want it to be educational too,” she says. “All the information looks scary on the bottle but it’s not once you get the hang of it. I was thinking of doing little tasting classes, events, and different cheese and wine pairings with some info as well on the wines.” The chalkboard menu runs from cheese and charcuterie boards to marinated olives and spiced nuts; heartier fare includes bacon and Comte cheese puffs served with mixed greens, duck rillettes, croque-monsieur warmed on a panini press, and melty raclette cheese on a baguette with salami and tangy slices of apple. Charcuterie will be a focus, with precise slices from a fire engine–red Berkel meat slicer with a vintage-inspired flywheel. Andreoni noted that while many of their friends work in Michelin-starred restaurants, they can’t afford to actually go to that restaurant and enjoy the food they’re serving; the couple hopes the wine bar will be an egalitarian antidote to that phenomenon, modeled on Parisian bouillons (affordable restaurants dating back to the 19th century, like Chartier, which dates to 1896) that served classic French fare with hearty portions and fast service and often encouraged communal seating and conversation. Beraud hopes the spot will become a neighborhood hangout for people of different ages and backgrounds: “I would go to the same place with my friends that everybody enjoys,” she says. “It’s a mix in Paris. It’s not categorized.” Opening hours will be 2 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 2 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays." - Maria C. Hunt

This is such a fun new addition on Piedmont Ave! Right beside the office, this can be a little dangerous for too frequent happy hours. I have managed to taste almost half of the wine list up to now (yes, I’ve been almost every day since they are open), and every wine is a fun surprise. It shows that they have all been thoughtfully picked to bring a big variety. The food is really good. These a small perfect bite to accompany to wines while you’re waiting for dinner! The cheese plate has been accompanied by honey or jam - which brings a fun twist to sweet and salty. Being gluten free, I love that they have good GF crackers as well as delicious olives. The prices are fair (I would even say that the champagne is priced on the low end). There is even an option for flights where you can have a tasting of 3 different wines to equal to a full glass! The staff has been super lovely on every occasion. The owner is also always there and greets you as though you are a friend! I’m excited to see this new establishment flourish to ensure we keep a nice and fun wine bar in our neighborhood!

This place has a great vibe and the owners really know how to host! We had so much fun during their grand opening, the raclette sandwich is perfectly paired with their wines. I also had a blast on their swing. That's right.. they have an indoor swing seat (fits 2 people)!! See video attached for proof of fun.

Such a wonderful vibe. The design of the space, wines, and menu are so thoughtful. So amazing to have this beautiful space to chill in the neighborhood and can’t wait to visit again. The charcuterie w the candied citrus, prosciutto, soft cheese, and honeycomb is so tasty. Vive le vin français 😘

The five of us went on a Thursday night around 6 and it was already lively. We tried sitting inside but it was a tight squeeze and really loud. We sat outside and one of us went to order. The food was quite delayed because I guess they were busy. We ordered a bottle of Sancerre which arrived promptly. Four of us were French natives and we found the wine and most of the food to be delicious. The onion soup was well seasoned with a perfect amount of Gruyère on top. The cup size was minuscule though. Also, the smallest and the tastiest quiche I’ve ever eaten. The salmon tartine was very tasty and well portioned. The cheese plate was perfect but the olives were tasteless and the nuts were stale. We were given napkins with silly sayings on it , mais franchement étant un resto français, ils auront pu nous servir avec qq mots français. Sinon, it was a good experience.

Google
so this place sounded great. reality is... it's trying. maybe too hard. it's not over the top. over the top would actually be fun. but it's kind of a tracing of a real Parisian wine bar that you're not quite sure is trying to be authentic or goofy. the food was good. we had a cheese plate and some quiche. but the wine was... not great, honestly. we tried a Petit Syrah and a Gamay I believe and both were disappointing. I thought maybe they needed some air so we sat a while chatting about the odd choice of mustard yellow for the art deco designs. the wine didn't get better. the two employees that night were very nice and friendly. I wanna give this place a chance as it just opened last month. but our first impression was a bit of a letdown. maybe we expected too much....

I am French and I must say : it feels like home !! What a place. You should definitely checked it out. Fabriques Délices, their supplier for charcuterie and cheese, a must have for a French place. We had a lot of fun, thanks to their team and friends who were there to support. We loved the energy ❤️

Beautiful wine bar with a stunning aesthetic, classy decor, and tasty high quality wines! Love to see this vision come to life and it’s exactly what Piedmont Ave needed.

Google
La Loulou is such a charming spot on Piedmont Avenue! The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, but what truly makes the experience special is the owner. She’s incredibly warm, welcoming, and makes you feel right at home. A perfect place to enjoy great wine and even better company!

Yelp
Hey LADIES! And hey MEN trying to impress the LADIES! Women owned, super chic spot! Dog friendly, yes. Kid friendly, no. Bring your pup, grab a spot on the outdoor patio, and soak in the relaxed, grown-up vibe. The bartenders? Incredibly friendly and actually helpful. The female bartender (didn't get her name, she's has great tattoos) will steer you toward something delicious based on your palate. The wine selection is stellar, and the vibes are immaculate. Highly recommend the champagne! Snacks? Yes please. The macaroons (blueberry, coconut cream, strawberry) are a delightful little treat, and the charcuterie board is a winner. Whether you're out with friends or looking for a chill date spot, this place delivers. Solid all around!

Yelp
I'll start with the positive. The place is gorgeous! Very instagrammable and whimsical and pretty! Apparently, it's kid and dog friendly, as in there were a lot of people with babies here. My friend and I got there around 3:45 on a Friday and it wasn't full and we had an easy time grabbing a table. I will say that as it got a bit later (i.e. after 5), the place was full and it got pretty loud. It's all counter service, so I ordered a charcuterie plate, which was tasty, and sampler of 3 wines. I love cab francs like no other, so when the person behind the counter told me they actually had two that they were pouring, I got both, along with a Grenache (also a fun/favorite grape). I had actually arrived first (before my friend), and when I went to order, I tried an NA wine, which was good, but then I decided to order a sampler instead (without tasting). I tried all three of my wines before my friend arrived. The Grenache was lackluster, and one of the cab francs had zero flavor to it. The second cab franc was horrendous, to the point that I assumed it was corked. I waited for my friend to arrive and asked her opinion and her face said it all and she also opined that it must have been corked. I sheepishly took it to the counter and asked about whether that might be the case, and the person told me that no, that's just what it's supposed to taste like (she described it as being very funky). I was a little perplexed as to me, there's a difference between funky and corked, and I simply slid the glass across the bar and said that I may as well give it to her as I was definitely not going to drink it. She did kindly offer to pour me something else, so that was nice. So, what I'll say is that it's a gorgeous spot, but the wines I tried were ones I'd absolutely avoid. Will I come back? Sure. Will I ask to try the wines before I order so much as a sampler? Yes. Let's just go with I managed to order things that did not fit my taste buds.

Yelp
Ambiance 5/5 Service 3 ( not over friendly) Food N/A wine only $40 for 2 glasses The ambiance is really nice, definitely feels like a French bistro, whimsical and bling. The decor from the bistro chairs, to the swing inside and the bathroom is where the investment has gone. My husband had a frozen apperal spritz and I had a French rose. Both a bit pricey, but we're paying for the ambiance after all. I would recommend as the place is lovely for a glass of wine, but don't expect excellent service to match the pricing. A collection of Small things could have made the experience better:like greeting customers, suggesting a wine by asking customer preference could have went a long way and an opportunity to up-sell food. A lost opportunity and dollars. Even pointing out the seating selection would be nice.i Felt like if I asked a question it would be answered but we didn't feel super welcomed. The food items looked nice with detail on the charcuterie tray. I honestly wasn't motivated by the service to try.

Yelp
We have passed this wine bar a few times and finally decided to stop in for a glass! The vibes are immaculate! You really feel like you have been transported to a European cafe. They also have a bunch of outdoor tables to enjoy as well. The staff was very friendly and helped us to try wines we liked before we picked a glass. The prices seemed a little high though, I would come back again and try a tasting instead. Might be a better value.

Yelp
Absolutely obsessed with this place is decor, staff and wine selection! Highly recommend for anyone looking for charcuterie and something to sip on! Check out their beautifully decorated bathroom

Yelp
Welcome to Piedmont Avenue, La Loulou! I'm glad you're here. I met a friend for a late afternoon drink and nosh and it was delightful to sit in La Loulou's sun-drenched space. I ordered a glass of Sancerre rosé and a small charcuterie and cheese plate. I like that you order at the bar because if I have to wait, I'd rather do it up front rather than when I'm ready to leave. But I could see how this might be less optimal if you were ordering additional items and the place was crowded--it wasn't on my visit. If you like Bay Grape and/or Ordinaire, you'll like La Loulou (and probably dig its cozy vibe). La Loulou leans more cafe-like in its atmosphere, during daylight hours anyway. La Loulou is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and I look forward to visiting again soon!

Yelp
Great little wine bar, but double check that chalk board, we stilled loved the place.

Yelp
Such a cute spot!! Friendly staff, and the cutest European vibes. Felt like I was transported to France. We got a fight, charcuterie, olives & nuts. Everything was so good, I'll definitely be coming back!

Yelp
Three hours chatting over wine flew by! The space felt welcoming; I'd easily visit, again. Delicious Bordeaux, nice Champagne and Pinot Noir. The cheeses were full of flavor, which I loved. It's a sun-drenched spot that stays light at night. The decor is thoughtful: velvet seats, flowers at each table, and a clear menu (see pic).

Mary D.

Yelp
I mean... okay, first- the ambience is beautiful. Such a cozy, well-appointed spot. But, if you're going to serve wine, please invest in proper glassware. That shows respect to the wine. These puny glasses are disrespectful. The food was pretty good- kind of a skimpy charcuterie board. Utterly delicious bread. We'll be back, but until this place starts investing in what matters (the wine and food rather than the napkins and disco bathroom), I'm not sure they'll be here to receive us.

Yelp
Very nice vibe. Wonderful interior. So far, the place has been hopping. No idea why Piedmont Avenue didn't have a wine bar but they sure do now. Good selection of wines by the glass or for purchase by the bottle and some small plates as well.

Yelp

Yelp
Really lovely new French wine bar! Had a delicious glass of orange wine, would def come back to try the charcuterie boards that looked amazing.

Yelp
From the top-- eye catching and beautiful design elements, cute French chairs and tables, and high ceilings. Great wine selection that's only getting better. I've been twice and the bubbles and non-alc Alsace are my top picks. Last but not least, I really like the counter order/table service set up. It removes unnecessary server issues or time wasted. Still have friendly service, too. The only thing I wish it had was bar seating. Lovely spot!

Sam D.

Yelp
Very nice experience. Friendly service and great food. We will be back! Nice bottle selection to drink there or take home.

Yelp
Awful service at the front, which is a shame because it discouraged me from ordering anything more than one glass of wine. I've worked in multiple service roles myself over the years, so it was disappointing that the staff lacked such basic customer service skills. You order at the bar, pay, grab your glasses and choose a spot for open seating. The women at the front, however, avoided eye contact with me completely as I was standing right in front waiting for my turn to order. No greeting, welcoming smile, or acknowledgement of my existence whatsoever. It felt dismissive and odd, given that there was no line behind me and I was the only person waiting. The two women working weren't exactly occupied with tasks that called for ignoring a customer, either. I ordered and still, the woman at the front didn't even say hello. Not an ounce of warmth, just a disdainful attitude. The Riesling I had was good and standardly priced. The interior decor was beautifully detailed. If it weren't for, that I would have given this place a 2/5. I'm willing to try again, but don't have high hopes that it will be any better.

Yelp
Went to celebrate my cousin's birthday on August 30th. We decided to dress up and come to La Loulou as we saw on social media this place recently opened up and aesthetically looked pleasing. When we walked in, everyone stopped...and I mean everyone from the servers to the patrons. Though it was uncomfortable, my party and I chalked it up to folks enjoying our outfits. When it was our turn, we told the server it was our first time here and asked for her recommendations. She told us the Aperol Spritz was good so we ordered that while waiting for another member of the party. I chose to keep the tab open so I handed her my card, she swiped and handed it back to me. I was confused as to why she swiped but left it alone for the time being. Once everyone arrived, we greeted everyone and then my phone alerted me that there was a charge of $100 here at the very establishment I was sitting in. We went up there to order our wine flight and I asked why I was charged $100 when the two Aperol Spritz came to a total of $32...She rudely stated they do this for all who chose to leave their tab open and would be returned to my account that same night. To me, there should be open communication when an establishment does something like this as this is not the norm. I was horrified as this has never happened to me and my experience for these types of charges have only been at hotels, resorts, and spas. We also ordered the Gluten-free charcuterie board and asked what would be included the same server told us she didn't know and started to guess. Overall, I won't be going back and would caution folks of color when going here. P.S. the board was quite delicious!

Yelp
Great location and space. Great concept. Great food and wine. But the way you need to order is inefficient. You have to wait in line for every customer to order and their ordered drinks to be poured. There is not really a bar in the wine bar, as you have to order in the same queue. And the bar curves into the seating area so if they wanted to change the format it would be awkward. If you want another glass, guess what, get back in line. The establishment tries hard to resemble a Parisian bistro, but I've never been in a bistro in Paris that handles ordering like this. You have table service.

Yelp
Gorgeous ambiance, attentive service, lovely wines, delicious bar snacks ... Piedmont Ave needed this place. It does get a bit loud when the crowd picks up, be warned.

Yelp
Such a cute and trendy Parisian wine bar. Love the vibe. This is perfect for a date night or girls night.

Yelp
Amazing service, a wide selection, and an unbeatable, glamorous vibe! I felt so welcomed and highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Very cute and quaint wine bar reminiscent of a bar or bistro in Paris. I enjoyed the wines I tasted and they also offer small bites like charcuterie, sandwiches, etc. Perfect place for an afternoon glass of wine

Emma C.

Yelp
I used to be a member at Bay Grape before they changed ownership. I was looking for a new wine bar as Bay Grape has lost its charm and community feel since the new owners took over in the spring, Lara in particular lacks good customer repertoire and does not value her regulars at all and after years enjoying wine there and building community the new ownership forced me to venture elsewhere. I could not be happier having landed here! The selection of wines by the glass is much larger and they offer flights of any three on the menu. I was used to a more limited glass selection and pre-determined flights at my previous watering hole so this was a WONDERFUL upgrade. They have a much larger variety of food and little bites to pair with wine. The service was absolutely incredible and ambiance was warm, elevated and inviting. I will 100% be returning and often!

Ariana S.

Yelp
Great service and great selection of wine. Recommend to anyone looking for a happy hour spot or place to get a pre-dinner drink! They also had bites that looked good!

Yelp
Great ambiance something new. Wine and beer selection was good. Definitely worth going back.

Yelp
Lovely new wine bar in a great neighborhood! Felt like I had walked into a lively spot in Paris! I love the ambiance and the decor! Looking forward to spending leisurely long summer evenings sipping on wine and enjoying their yummy bites! Great community space :)

Yelp
A cute place but I'm surprised it wasn't busier on Fathers Day. It seems a little cumbersome with the ordering procedure and I think this will hurt them. If I've had a glass of wine and am unsure about getting another, if a charming server were to come by and ask if I want another I'd probably say yes but if I have to get up and schlep to the bar and try to get someones attention to order another I'd probably not bother. The food options are really just nibbles, it would be nice if they offered one more substantial dish like a cassoulet or coq au Vin or boeuf bourguignon and also it would be more efficient if the bread they served didn't need to be warmed up for each order. I'm sure they will do some tweaking as things settle down

Alice G.

Yelp
So stinking cute! Feels like you're on a European vacation. Nice outdoor space, and the interior decor (and bathroom) are adorable!

Yelp
This place is beautiful and amazing! If you are in the area you hafta check it out! Totally great atmosphere!

Yelp
It was so nice. Felt like I was in Paris. Great vibe, owner is very nice and the wines were really good.

gary l.

Yelp
The pros very good wines good staff really good food the cons I went on a crowded happy hour where there was a few people in line to order but the line forms in the walkway so you are constantly trying to get out of peoples way. I had an experience where I moved to the side to let people through and then got back in line and somebody yelled at me for cutting line. Just not set up very well for crowds, but overall very good.
