The Best Oaxacan Restaurants In LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Our meals at La Mayordomía have been known to stretch through the afternoon, but that’s totally on us and our tendency to stare aimlessly into pastry cases. This part-restaurant, part-market in South Park has a beautiful selection of fresh baked goods, imported cheese, produce, and Oaxacan chocolates that you’ll mosey through before finally arriving at your table. The food here, by the way, is also delicious, with their moronga tlayuda being our personal favorite. This Oaxacan blood sausage is finely minced and sprinkled onto a massive crisp tortilla that’s covered in well-seasoned bean paste, quesillo, and the standard tomato, cabbage, and avocado. This very filling meal gets a savory tang from the dark sausage and salsa roja, and can be paired with some fried chapulines for an extra Oaxacan combo." - Sylvio Martins

The Best Tlayudas In Los Angeles - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"This market and restaurant located in South Central is Expresión Oaxaqueña’s sister location and offers a wide selection of Oaxacan chocolate, meats, imported cheeses, baked goods, and fresh produce. The shop’s long wall of pastry cases is usually enough to keep me transfixed for a solid 10 minutes, but their food is equally terrific. While both the tlayuda tortilla and bean paste recipe are the same as the ones found at Expresión Oaxaqueña, La Mayordomía offers the option to include chapulines (grasshoppers) or moronga as additional toppings. The latter is a delicious Oaxacan blood sausage that’s minced and cooked before generously topping a fully-loaded tlayuda. Its savory and metallic flavor pairs well with a generous spritz of lime and a dash of hot salsa roja. According to the manager, moronga is the true Oaxacan go-to order, so I suggest giving it a try if blood sausage is your thing." - Sylvio Martins

Yelp
The food is delicious. I have been coming here for many years, and it has always been a good experience. Just during the summer, make sure you take mosquito repellent; they are infested with them. Parking has been good, but I also go early in the morning before noon. Overall, it is a great place to eat.

Yelp
I had a training in this neighborhood and drove out a little early to see my lunch options in the neighborhood. This place caught my eye just from the amount of people coming in and out at 850am. So I made the choice right there that I was going to try this place for lunch. This visit was done the old fashioned way of just choosing without any research. Wow when I went inside I was really surprised to see a beautiful display of fruits & veggies at the front. The place is clean and well organized. Since I was on a time crunch I just ordered black beans and rice to-go but picked up some grapes and a elephant ear pastry. The beans were very flavorful and so was the rice. A gem in the neighborhood. I will definitely patronize this place again.

Yelp
This is the place to get a few Oaxacan snacks as well as some quesillo, chapulines and pan dulce for the road

Yelp
As a native Oaxacan I come here very often because I love me a good tlayuda. This place has cozy seating inside but also cute table area outside with a nice vibe. The servers are always attentive and constantly checking to make sure you have everything you need. The portions are good, the prices are fair, and the sazón is authentic. You can expect consistently delicious food. Aside from the delicious authentic Oaxacan food there is a small storefront which sells delicious freshly baked bread, meats, and produce. You can find lots of delicious fruits and herbs here that may not be commonly found in a regular market. Definitely worth a try!

Yelp
I do not understand how this place doesn't have 5 stars on yelp. I love everything about this place. Let's start with the market. Beautiful selection of seasonal fruits and veggies like mamey sapote and cherimoya. The bakery has a beautiful selection of fresh Mexican breads, tortillas, cookies and muffins that smell divine. Beautiful selection of meat and seafood as well. Now the restaurant. The mole, enchiladas verde, fresh corn tortillas, horchata, breakfast foods, cafe de oja... everything was spectacular. If I could give more than five stars I would. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Beautiful authentic store with a lot of delicious pastries, cakes, and authentic meat cuts. However, I will never be returning to the store. No affordable prices, I spent $25 on a whole chicken. And $10 on 3 pieces of bread. And the cashier was so rude. Could have been a go to but unfortunately never ever returning.

Yelp
Hubby and I have been here for breakfast/brunch a few times and they do not disappoint. The portions are fairly large and shareable. I enjoy the entomatadas with over medium eggs for breakfast, or their molcajete for lunch. Hubby loves the tlayuda (comes with chorizo, chicken, and steak for the meat lovers). Explosion of flavors! Oh, and their cafe de olla! Delicious. The service is impecable. The waiters/waitresses are very attentive from the moment you walk in and you won't have to wait long for your food. The inside is very homie; even the outside set up gives backyard vibes. Highly recommend trying this spot when in the heart of LA!

Yelp
Horrible today. I've been coming to this restaurant for months. Today, my husband and I did not get our order. We arrive at 10:20 am. We placed our order in and waited for an hour. I called the waiter to see what happened with our order. She did not come back and explain. My husband and I got up and left. This restaurant lost a good customer.

Yelp

Raquel D.

Yelp
We had some bad service today. Normally it's been good customer service. I did not go in with my mom today because I was feeling tired due to a shot I had received earlier for my treatment. So my mom went in by herself she told me there was a long line. Due to age my mom's feet hurt . When she was next to be rung up the cashier told her she was having a till exchange told her to go To the next cashier Evelina she then proceeded to take care of her coworker over 3 customers

Yelp

Porfa porfa.

Yelp
I was invited to this restaurant that I have passed by so many times. I had for years thought this place was just a bakery, but it has a quaint restaurant inside. Served inside is delicious Oaxacan cuisine. I had the chilaquiles verdes with tasajo de res and they are served with delicious black beans de la olla and a bolillo (French bread ) on the side. To accompany my meal I had a cafe de olla which was generously filled a few times while I was eating. The waitress was very attentive and asked us throughout our time there if she can assist us with anything further. The members of my party had a to ayuda with two meats and and a regular breakfast of pancakes, eggs and bacon. They too seemed to enjoy their meal as there were no leftovers to be had. Definitely give this hidden gem a try. I'm already planning my return trip.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Lots of reviews about the service but we didn't have much of a problem. It was lunch time during the week. They have so many dishes here it's crazy. I went simple since I rarely see enfrijoladas on a menu. Free chips and mole was great too. Would definitely go back to try more dishes

mike w.

Yelp
Great hidden gem. Homemade tortillas. Everything is delicious. Will be back when I return to LA. Ask to sit outside on the patio. Great ambience.

Veronica H.

Yelp
They be overcharging I ordered some food and they overcharged me and when I asked about it the girl said prices have changed . Well why is price on the menu say otherwise.
google avatar

Braandooll R.

Yelp
Food is good, only problem is that people here are all rude. Apparently if you go to the counter and ask for for example a bolillo with egg they'll ask: For here or to go? If you say for here they will literally make fun of you and say in the counter its only for to go if you want to eat here you have to sit down. Even the cook laughs at you which is pretty rude for a newbie that doesn't know. I'm saying this because i had a bolillo and that happened also that bolillo was 7 dollars, to me that is overpriced. I definitely don't recommend this place. People is rude and food is overpriced.

Yelp

Yelp
Food is delicious. Cafe de olla is amazing! I took one star off because Refills on our drinks were not offered and wait for long periods of time for the server to return. Once our food arrived the server kind of disappeared and did not check in on us. I think next time I will order to go. Amazing food.
google avatar

Daisy C.

Yelp
google avatar

Carlos L.

Yelp
The food was okay. My family and I went on Sunday morning 10:30 am. Had to wait for a table around 15 min, not bad. Once we were seated it took another 10 min for the waitress to take our order. Our food arrived without silverware and napkins. I had to go get the silverware and for the napkins I grabbed some from a role they had in the corner. Terrible service. I wouldn't go back to this place.

Yelp
Absolutely love the cakes, they're so good!! They did an amazing job. Just what we wanted!!
google avatar

Mickiela M.

Yelp
This place is so delicious. The 3 stars are in no way a reflection of what you get. Their is always a long line the food is always so fresh and with high quality ingredients. The food is so good I contemplated not leaving a review so I could keep the secret to myself.

Laura R.

Yelp

google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
This place surpasses ridiculousness The waitresses are unbelievable And i don't mean it in a good way !! Just save your money, spend it on another local business that truly deserves it
google avatar

Isa L.

Yelp
Good meals. No complaints at all. I ordered three different dishes and they were ready within 15 min. Looked clean and had its own parking lot. I would go back again.

Gabriel S.

Yelp

google avatar

Betty I.

Yelp
All the food is good and at an affordable price. They probably just need one person to help serving but I understand that during these times that is hard to have
google avatar

Amy G.

Yelp
My favorite place to eat ,lots of law enforcement comes and have lunch here ,the food is amazing and big portions the prize reasonable friendly environment and lots of parking

Abi V.

Yelp
google avatar

Sebastian C.

Yelp
The conchas are Horrible!! Conchas are not freshly made!!!its like they use the cheapest ingredients!!!!

Javier C.

Yelp

Melissa A.

Yelp
My dad orders from here every other week and we always get the same thing, three tacos de la abuela, a tlayuda, and some memelas. The tacos have always been non spicy and perfect for kids but, this time they came with sauce that was so spicy it was impossible for the 9 and 10 year old to eat. My dad called and the lady who answered was SO rude, didn't even get a "sorry about that" or anything. Definitely won't be going back. Below is our receipt and a pic of one of the tacos with the really spicy sauce.

Dulce O.

Yelp
I came to buy two packs of "tlayudas" on a friday. The next day (Saturday) they were completely spoiled. I bought them specifically to share with my family over the long weekend. I wasn't able to return them the next day since I was out of town. I made the mistake of discarding the receipt which was my fault on my behalf. Staff didn't make an effort to fix the issue after I showed them the bank account transaction receipt but according to the person who " helped" me; it's not enough proof of purchase. I've been a loyal customer for years and I was turned away. I didn't argue, just walked away and said " thank you, you can throw your product to the trash then." I'm disappointed because I went in peacefully and I was turned away right away with no effort whatsoever to keep a customer happy.

Yelp
Reviewing for La Mayordomia Bakery, a new business on Pico. So new, it's not even showing up on Yelp yet. This Bakery is part of the Expession Oaxaqueña chains of bussiness. They have fresh baked Mexican bread every morning and afternoon. On Friday's they grind chocolate Oaxacan style. They sell bars of chocolate, ground cacao and also raw cacao. Lot's of other traditional mexican candy, chips and pastries. Big variety of Southern Mexico pastries. Tiene reposteria de Puebla y Oaxaca.

Carolina V.

Yelp
I love all fresh meat . But i don't live close so when i go there i know i will pay extra but will get quality . Since covid you have to ask the cashier to give you the bread and i have gone 2 times to la mayordomia on braoadway and i am given old bread (hard dry ) so i am very disappointed . Just went there today 2/23/22 and will have to throw my bread to trash . is to far to go back .

Jose Z.

Yelp
I went here yesterday to buy some food and bread. We I went to eat the bread I discovered some mold on the inside of the bread. So I called them up and told them what I had found. All they had to say was that didn't care they were to busy for my call. They have horrible costumer service here and there food is even worse. !!DONT GO HERE!!
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
Horrible costumer service , the cashiers ( girls that work there ) are rude and so slow , they'll be talking to each other and don't even care they have costumers waiting. Bread and food are ok .
google avatar

Kat S.

Yelp
Tamale ($2.45 out the door), average tamale, okay flavor. Good variety in the panederia (no cakes/desserts that I saw though)- lots of people getting breakfast in the mornings. Slow service at the registers. Convenient for the location bc its kinda in the hood and so no grocery stores around.
google avatar

Dee M.

Yelp
The Cafe de Olla is a must try!!! It's my first time here and if you're a coffee lover like me you have to try it!! It's sweet but smooth. No need for sugar or cream!! It's black coffee with a mixture of cinnamon and chocolate and I'm sure it has something else in it. Give it a try and buy some pan dulce on the way. Delicious!!
google avatar

Carolina G.

Yelp
Bread is great. FOOD HOWEVER, is also good, the taste is okay. The portions are fu**ing small though, don't get me wrong I'm a big foodie, and I like eating in big portions, but what they gave me was an excuse. We paid 25$ for a molcajete(if that's how it's spelled) but they literally give us one piece of meat, chicken, chicharrón and a nopal. They where not big pieces either. They where pieces for ants. The juice in the molcajete was very citrusy. And they gave us 2 tortillas. That's it folks. Oh wait ! And a handful of beans. And some rubbery cheese. Entirely up to you if you want to go. But if you LOVE BIG PORTIONS. Like me, then it's not worth the money. :)
google avatar

Sugei G.

Yelp
This was our family's go-to bakery. When they initially opened the sweet bread and Bolillo were sooo good and at a reasonable price. Now the products are over priced and the quality is poor. We've even wanted to return the product. Not to mention the poor, poor customer service!!!

Mireya G.

Yelp
I ordered a molcajate and they only put one small strip for each meat everything else was oranges & lettuce leaves. Also payed $35, very overpriced for the amount of food included.
google avatar

Franky H.

Yelp
I don't know why there isn't more positive reviews related to the restaurant dining. This place has really delicious food, such as tamales, chilaquiles, Alambres (fajitas), Tasajos and Cesinas. Sometimes their portions can be a bit overwhelming, so I suggest sharing a dish with another person (would remove half a star if I could). Their black coffee is very delicious, no need to add milk, thanks to the sweetness of sugar and cinnamon that gives it a nice flavor, and it's not strong at all. Expect crowds on weekend mornings, so be patient. Aside from the restaurant, they have a bakery available to buy bread on the go or for the family. I never buy groceries here, but I appreciate their efforts to make it a one-stop shop. Give this place a shot, and I guarantee that you'll not be disappointed with their food.
google avatar

Marisol R.

Yelp
I love this place but when it's full of people and your hungry it's not fun at all. I don't like the long lines inside this local place. I think they need a new strategy to ordering food vs. paying for food. They have a bakery section, a meat section, and a dinning section of hot food. I have to wait in line to Oder and pay and then wait for my hot food. They need someone in the hot food section taking orders so it will make it an easy transaction for all. They only have two registers and trust me it gets pack in this place usually around 7:00 pm. The positive side is that they open really early 6:30am!!! They also need more trays for the bread selection. Other than that this place is still great! I'm a regular here, although I don't check in all the time.
