Houston’s Best Kid-Friendly Restaurants | Eater Houston

"Open at 7 a.m. for early risers, this restaurant offers a kid’s pancake platter with an egg and a choice of protein. There are plenty of lunch and dinner options as well, including cheese quesadillas and beef and chicken fajita tacos served with rice and refried beans for $6 to $9. Best of all, the restaurant is situated alongside an enclosed green space, meaning adults can sip on cocktails and chow down tacos while the little ones release some energy. Best of all, the restaurant is situated alongside the Stomping Ground’s enclosed green space." - Brianna Griff

La Mex Review - Garden Oaks - Houston - The Infatuation

"Located in the Stomping Grounds shopping center, you’re at La Mex for quick and casual Tex-Mex food. The menu at this compact Garden Oaks joint is full of classics—fajitas, suiza enchiladas, and potent margaritas. And while none of the food is revolutionary, we have no problem getting down with a plate of their sizzling beef, refried beans, and a stack of flour tortillas. Plus, there’s a small but mighty collection of breakfast dishes, which are served all day. " - Gianni Greene

Food is great, good prices and quality service. I've been to this location many times with my wife and daughter. They've never served us a bad item, always had great recommendations and the location is always clean inside and outside patio area. If you are free from 3p to 6p they have a great selection thats expanded now to include both drinks and food for happy hour. If you have little ones, the stomping grounds is a great location to visit. If you do stop by, among all the food available, La Mex is the must visit!

I recently visited La Mex for the first time, and I was truly impressed by the inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. With a vibrant and cozy ambiance, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a good meal. I wasn't sure what to order, so I decided to go with one of my favorite breakfast options: the barbacoa tacos. They did not disappoint! My wife opted for the Tres Leches French toast, which was a delightful twist on a classic. We also indulged in a delicious coffee latte that complemented our meals perfectly. Overall, everything was incredibly satisfying. I can’t wait to return for dinner and drinks next time. La Mex is definitely a gem worth visiting!

Fantastic Mexican restaurant! The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. Located in the perfect spot, offering both indoor dining and a charming patio experience. The patio is not only a delightful place to dine, but it's also safe for the little ones to play outside—a win-win for everyone!

Google
Very average Tex med with pretty rough service. No clear path or flow for ordering and the staff just kinda sat there. Counter style order and pretty pricey. The waitress forgot our drinks and the mixed fajitas were way overcooked, tough and chewy. The location is great but other than that, not much going for it.

Newly opened sister restaurant to the original La Mexicana in Montrose. Really beautiful location, delicious food and a full bar. The carne guisada tacos are a must! We also had the chilaquiles and the fajitas. Will definitely be back!

2nd visit on Thursdsy 01/18 @ 7:00pm. We had the place to ourselves. The food and service are still excellent. We had the deluxe chips, beef quesadilla and chorizo con huevo. . 1st time visit on Tuesday 12/19 @ 5:45pm. Modern take on La Mexicana. We had the happy hour top shelf margarita, sangria and mini barbacao tacos. All 3 were amazing. Then we ordered the beef fajitas and deluxe chips service. Our fajitas came out with chicken and our bartender said keep the chicken and he brought out more beef. The fajitas were so so tasty. The deluxe chips are a must try. The service was friendly and attentive. It was clean and well maintained. I would recommend to others and would come back. No cash accepted , but you can pay with your phone or any card.

To start the service is slow. 30 mins to receive 2 egg platters and a Sunday morning with an empty dining room. The food lacks any flavor which is magical considering it’s Mexican food. Salsas have zero flavor as well. At the very least make the corn tortillas in house instead of store bought Mission tortillas. The refried beans have to also be canned instead of made in house. I think a revisit to their recipes (throw some salt in)is very much well warranted if they want to stay operating in this Houston market.

Absolutely loved this place! My husband and I went during lunch time, the staff was friendly and the food was great. So good, we cleaned our plates lol. Love that it’s located at the Stomping grounds so our littles have a place to play. Wish I would have gotten better pictures!

Yelp
I love their breakfast! I love when the weather is nice and we can sit on the lawn with a margarita and some chips and guacamole. My husband really likes their beef fajitas. They make fresh tortillas daily. All of the staff area so nice too.

Yelp
I was looking for a Mexican restaurant in the area and La Mex came up. You order at the counter. They had lunch specials and I ordered a cheese quesadilla on corn tortillas with rice and beans. The quesadillas had plenty of cheese. The rice and beans were good too. But the beans were lukewarm. The waiter offered me salsas. I asked for the mildest one. I was given a tangy green salsa to put on my quesadillas. It was still spicy but good. There are no chips and salsa included with your meal. I sat outside and unfortunately there were flies. This restaurant is esthetically pleasing. The outdoor seating looks out to a courtyard. I should have complained about the temperature of the refried beans but I was hungry and wanted to finish up and go. Overall, my plate of quesadillas was good.

Yelp
Popped in for happy hour because it was downstairs from my son's art class. Didn't get any drinks but did partake in the food. Pretty good but some of my stuff was cold except for the flautas which were the best item. Pretty a good deal for happy hour but also not the tastiest.

Yelp
The food is created to represent a style that is memorable. A simple taco is all that expect of a complete taco. The Sopa Azteca is just right as a flavorful soup dish. It is a pretty place and the people are friendly.

Yelp
It was super overpriced. I got 2 breakfast tacos and some chips and queso and my total was $24. I think that's a bit excessive. They tacos were okay.

Yelp
Excellent addition to the Stomping Grounds. Counter-service style Tex-mex. Indoor/outdoor seating - great if you have kids that want to run around outside on the green - and also has a full bar for the parents. We ordered mixed fajitas for two - lots of beef and chicken and barely finished. Delicious onions under the fajitas. Served with rice, beans, and guacamole . Also had a chips and queso app. Overall the only room for improvement would be chips/salsa being served with each meal as is pretty normal at Mexican restaurants. It was busy but it was hard to tell as most customers were dining outside with their kids. Which made inside a nice retreat. Check it out!

Yelp
Great little place. Not a lot offered on the menu but the fact that they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner ALL DAY makes up for it. Met my mom and sisters here on Mother's Day and was pleasantly surprised there wasn't a wait. Definitely worth a stop.

Yelp
We had potato, egg & ham taco, kids pancake breakfast with bacon and coffee. All were great and my kids can run around after we are done. Clean space and friendly staff. Excited to come back and try lunch/dinner items.

Yelp
The food is excellent! I love La Mexicana and have been going there for years. So glad we have a little piece of it in the GOOF area! Love it!! Breakfast all day, the best flour tortillas in town, and my favorite beef fajita taco with slices of avocado and a touch of their green sauce, the best! Great play area for the kids between the restaurants.

Yelp
We were thrilled to discover La Mex is part is La Mexicana! We have been going there for years and love that we have La Mex in Oak Forest!! The food and service were excellent and drinks were superb.

Yelp
Brand new, nice, bright, and spacious counting the open courtyard in front. Plenty of parking and looks to be family-friendly. Perhaps still tweaking things a bit such as a steady bartender and maybe some recipe work in the kitchen. Only sampled the fajitas which were decent with sides, and plenty of chips and salsas. The one item that needs immediate work is the queso as it had the consistency of a soup and was mostly flavorless. I would try again in a month or so to see if all things have been corrected. ..

Yelp
This place is great. Priced very reasonably. Great kids menu. Amazing drinks specially the sangria and frozen or on the rocks margarita, and the fajitas are simply the best.

Yelp
Food is delicious. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Dining outside is a bit loud but there is plenty of space to dine inside. Will be back!

Yelp
I'd say this place is average. The chips and dips weren't to my liking. We had the guac, salsas and queso. The guac tasted artificial and the salsas are the fresh ones that I personally like. The queso was meh. The fajitas were good. I liked the meats and the flour tortillas were good. Unfortunately the service was really really bad. Our server was only not present but also not very friendly. Never smiled once. We ordered extra tortillas and our waitress disappeared for a long time so we finally got up and just asked the cooks oUrselves if we could have more. I'm not sure I'd come back.

Yelp
Love the original la Mexicana on Montrose but this location on 34th is closer to me. Great food and excellent service!

Fran D.

Yelp
The food flavor and quality were excellent Our waiter (the bartender) was friendly, helpful, and prompt. Most of us had tacos or enchiladas, but one had the tortilla soup, we all tasted it. We ate outside on the covered porch, next to the grassy yard at the center of the Stomping Grounds. It was a great lunch

T. G.

Yelp
No one there but us. Service and people were nice but food couldn't have been more bland. Enchiladas, rice, beans and quesadilla were all terribly lacking in flavor. Wouldn't go back for dinner food but may go back to give the breakfasts a chance since that was most of the menu. Very little available for lunch/dinner.

Yelp
Incredible tasting food and sangria margsnew business to this area of the heights, but sister restaurant in Montrose.
