Part grocery, part taqueria, this counter serves juicy barbacoa, chicken, and pork tacos on double tortillas with house salsas. Called out by 225 Magazine’s taco hunt and still drawing crowds for value and flavor.

Fantastic hole in the wall off Siegen. Authentic Mexican food to me at least. The prices are quite reasonable, the atmosphere isn't all that great but the food was fantastic! Fresh avocado with 2 of our 3 meals, incredible horchata, great meals. The chips and salsa are fairly plain, but so many sauces are available to spice them up. We all were very impressed with this place! I enjoyed the Mexican meat plate weekend special, and the table enjoyed Mexican combo plate, and burritos. Also, pickled onions provided on the table.

Google
I ordered a ceviche and a small side of rice, something I felt was common. They took almost an hour to bring out to my table, and the place was empty. When the ceviche arrived, the stuff was drowning in a puddle of water. Not exaggerating. I know sometimes ceviche may be moist, but this was crazy. It was also very salty. The waitress was completely oblivious.

Google
Nice little hole in the wall. I made a quick stop here to get a couple burritos to go. was not disappointed by the friendly staff or the quality of the food. only critique I might offer is the size of the burritos is a bit small delicious as they are. you might want to get two

Google
I am giving this place 5 starts. a small hole in the wall with huge flavor. I was in Baton Rouge for a business conference, I stumbled upon this place. Wow, just wow. Grocery store at front, a decent size restaurant at back. Prices are so low, you can go as a family and spend less than $80 or so. First the chips and Salsa along with onion picket and two big bottles of red spicy sauce and green Jalapeno sauce. They are so effing awesome. I downed a Carona with the chips, salsa, onion pickle and those delicious sauce. I ordered a chicken burrito. Rice, beans, chicken and all other flavors folded into a nice size burrito and wrapped perfectly. Chicke was perfectly cooked, tasted delicious. Add those green or red sauce to it for elevated experience. I ordered churros for desert, it was piping hot, crispy and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Perfect for an afternoon pick me up. So I had a Corona, Chicken Burrito, Churros, paid $16.73+ taxes. It was worth every pennny for me. Service was great. Place was clean, I would highly recommend this place if you happen to visit Baton Rouge.

Google
The quality of food and service has decreased with flavor and portions. The salsa is not good; my husband said it taste like marinade. We had chicken and shredded beef tacos.

Sydnie

Google
We tried shredded beef, shredded pork, chicken, and ground beef tacos. They were so good!! Our favorite was definitely the shredded beef and pork. You have an option for either corn or flour tortilla as well. It’s a great hole in the wall place, lots of diners were there solo during the time we went. The servers are very sweet and kind. We’ll be back almost every week!

Coretta JG

Google
The owner was nice and friendly, the waitress at the bar was not as welcoming. The sauces had no flavor. I got one pork, chicken and steak and the meat was not very discernible. I was expecting my sautéed onions to be inside the tacos. My to go plate wasn't very sturdy. It kind of reminded me of taking an aluminum foil covered leftovers plate from someone's house.

Taco Tuesday is My Fav Time to Go ($1/taco). Service is fast and the margaritas are yummy. Will return for sure !

Yelp
This place is a great little hole-in-the-wall that few people seem to know about. In the front, it's a Latino grocery and convenience store. In the rear it's a casual dining restaurant with very nice food at a good price. Both are worth visiting! La Mexicana is located in the strip mall directly across Seigen from the Super Target. Look for the green letters spelling out their name over the facade. If you are there to dine, enter and walk to the back where the tables and colorful booths are located. These booths are great, they have graphics on them that depict everything from pastoral scenes to Aztec deities, all is bright vivid colors! You can pick up a menu from the counter on your way to your seat, or wait for a server to bring you one. There's a wide selection of Mexican/American dishes that probably include your favorites. There's some other dishes as well, including a great little selection of seafood. Another menu area to peruse is the torta sandwiches. All the food seems fresh and homestyle. They usually bring big bottles of red and green sauce to the table to complement the small bowls of salsa and the pickled onion condiments. Another great thing is they have cold Topo Chico mineral water to go with your meal. Looking for a fresh and different place to eat Mexican? Give this local, small, and unique place a try. It's pretty homey and authentic

Yelp
Authentic and amazing! Great margarita, quick and attentive service. Very clean! Would definitely go again when we are in BR.

Yelp
Everything. Service was polite and fast. Food was absolutely delicious. I would recommend this restaurant any day

Yelp
The staff was very nice but couldn't communicate with them because they didn't speak English I ordered some Tacos and you could tell the food was microwaved because they brought it up the minute I ordered it plus it was so soggy, I will not be eating there again

Yelp
Pick up some Menudo today. May be this is how it's normally served but didn't received any onion, cilantro and lime Every restaurant make Menudo differently but this one tasted like instant soup to me. Maybe has to do with tripes cut in tiny pieces? Please go check out menudo at La Tienda Latina near by and learn how they make it.

Yelp
I came here for the tacos and I was not disappointed!! They are authentic Mexican street tacos and coke with meat, onions, cilantro, a couple of limes and a couple of salsas, one red, one green. I got the Barbacoa tacos and the meat was fabulous! Dripping with juices. I also got sides of rice and beans and both were delightful. The front is a standard Latin grocery and the seating is in the back. On Tuesday they have $1 tacos so I will definitely be back next Tuesday The ambiance is what you would expect from a strip mall taco joint inside a grocery store but so are the prices.

Yelp
I chose this restaurant bc I like to go to mom n pop restaurants. First of all authentic Mexican is far much better then this. Salado taste like if it was from a jar, beans from a can and fajitas (chicken) was chunks of thighs . Chicken fajitas are suppose to be made from breast chicken and cut like fajita style . I spoke with who I think is the owner which he had no concerns about me not being happy with my food. The waitress didn't speak English which is fine bc I speak Spanish but while I was giving her feed back about my food she walked away as if I wasn't talking . I'm sorry I would never be back and will not recommend ANYONE THERE !

Yelp
Cute place; delicious food. I ordered the shrimp enchiladas with cheese and my companion ordered the shrimp quesadilla. Both entrees with rice and beans were tasty and satisfying. The decor smacked of authentic Mexico. Cute tables and chairs, colorfully painted with Mexican scenery. We'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Service is great. Salsa and margaritas are delicious, but they're downhill after that. Nachos were NOTHING like the picture and cold to boot. I ordered one of the combination 6 that was cold too. The texture of the tortillas seemed like they'd been reheated.

cate s.

Yelp
This place is so authentic! The front of the store is a grocery store and the back is the restaurant. We got the enchiladas (one with red sauce and one with queso), the combo plate, and a side of queso. The queso didn't come out super hot, but other than that the food was delicious! Definitely would recommend if you're close by.

Yelp
Average taste of a typical Mexican restaurant-chips were a little hard and flavorless-taco salad was good but typical-prices average-service good.

Christie C.

Yelp
I'm not sure that I remember eating here. But, I love Mexican food and the pictures look delicious! So, I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend it!

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food and an incredibly patient staff. You really can't beat Taco Tuesday during happy hour.

Yelp
The joys of traveling include finding hidden gems. It's located in a strip mall so it's easy to miss. Looking from the outside you would think that it's a small grocery store which it is but hidden in the back is a small quaint restaurant that serves up some pretty good authentic Mexican food. Although they have a menu, most items on the menu are so popular that they usually are sold out. We had homemade guacamole, agua fresca de Jamaica, beef fajita tacos and enchiladas de carnitas. Everything was delicious! The onions that came with our salsa were like eating fire but I kept eating! Lol! Some other reviewers mentioned that the meat was on the dry side. I agree with this statement but the flavor was so good! The guacamole was some of the best I've ever had. The chips do not appear to be homemade but were ok. The salsa was good. I didn't get a chance to look around the store but I noticed that they have fresh meats and a butcher on site. This is definitely on my list to revisit when I'm back in town.

Yelp
The best Mexican tacos in BR! It's located in a strip mall off of Siegen lane. The front half is a grocery store and the back is the restaurant. They have waiter service but you pay at the end of your meal at the front grocery store part. I've been once before and the service is speedy. I'm very impressed and will have to be back soon!
google avatar

Daphne A.

Yelp
Man. This place is so yummy. Super affordable and just tastes great. You dine in the area at the back of the store, and service is prompt and friendly. We ordered the tacos panchos y pastor, tacos especiales y chorizo, and a carnitas plate. Everything what simply lovely and cooked perfectly, seasoned well, too. They provide chips and salsa. We eventually ordered horchata since it's a sweet choice for a dessert, and it tastes great, as well. I recommend!

Yelp
This little place is quite deceiving. The entrance is actually a store, and the restaurant is in the rear. It's an unassuming space with tables & a small bar. There was a very sweet lady named Laticia who helped me through the menu, from my seat at the bar. After starting to sip on my margarita, I decided on Tacos (In the absence of chimichangas). Chicken, brisket, and Carnitas. They were all tasty. But the Carnitas (Pork) and the Brisket were seriously good! I ordered more to go. And they were packed in a simple plastic plate, and covered with foil sheets. It made me smile to see such simplicity in a world of complicated. This little place was big on customer service, peaceful surroundings, and flavor. Proof that sometimes the best things, are the simple things.

Yelp
This place is close to my office. Very authentic. Guacamole is amazing. Salsa is also very good. The server doesn't always speak English which is fine Bc they are super tentative regardless. It is in the back of a grocery store. You seat yourself and they always set down some menus with chips and get your drink order. I've only got the tacos every time I've been and I love them. The only complaint I have is that every single time I go there is always one piece of black hair in at least one taco. Every. Single. Time.
google avatar

Lyle S.

Yelp
This place is good stuff. Situated in the back of a market, there is a few tables and a bar. The menu of short and the drink list even shorter consisting of only beer and regular margaritas. This didn't take away at all. The food was great and authentic. The staff was quick and friendly. They are happy to let you alter items or substitute things for little or no charge. They have been featured in the advocate more than once. Don't forget to try some of their interesting sodas if you're into that sort of thing.

Makari H.

Yelp
This is single handedly the best Mexican place in Baton Rouge I have ate. Service was impeccable, the mango margarita taste like heaven in a glass. The carne asada is the best carne asada I have had to date. Barbacoa tacos were so delicious. The best place I've had in a very long time.
google avatar

Lois L.

Yelp
We enjoyed the taco special on Tuesday. Very attractive decor and good service. The server was efficient and helpful. We will return on the weekend for their soup. No tamales today but we'll try those soon. And maybe the seafood cocktail!! Food fun!
google avatar

Haiqiao J.

Yelp
So this hidden little gem is actually the back area of a shop, as many others have pointed out. It looks like a cantina with a few lunch tables ready to go. The menu has options of entrees, but they also have almost every item a la carte. This way you can mix and match to try whatever you like. Please be aware that the foods with fresh onion (like the ceviche) comes with a punch. You know for sure that there is fresh onion in there and plenty of it. This is not a bad thing, just something to be aware of for those that don't like strong onion flavor

Jeff D.

Yelp
I'd say very good. Went for Tacos Tuesday and they were great. Service was good even though busy. I just wish they had Coke Products on Fountain.
google avatar

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican food! Service was fast and friendly! Cheap prices for good amount of great tasting food.

Clay C.

Yelp
A small place you won't notice. The front is a grocery store. To the back are tables and bar. Sit down at a table and enjoy your tacos. Best deal in town on Taco Tuesday. I will be back.
google avatar

Patrick L.

Yelp
The restaurant section is in the back of the small Mexican grocer, but the store is fairly spacious once you walk inside. Fairly priced tacos, had every type the last two times I came here. Food was high quality, and they serve you free chips and salsa, with spicy onions. They also offer two types of sauces, one spicy and one mild, along with plenty of wedges of limes that come with each order. They also have horchata and daily specials.

Yelp
This is not Tex Mex..., I highly recommend the menu items they do offer , and at the end of the meal, I spoke to the owner and he told me " hardly anybody knows about this place"... I did suggest that many people enjoy margaritas at other competitors- he plans to include them very soon. I also suggested they might consider adding tres leches, or other common Mexican desserts. Sometimes people in the Seattle area will go have coffee and dessert- why not in Baton Rouge? Dulce Le Leche or Tres Leches would sell well... in my opinion. Hubby and I came for dinner on Friday, June 16,2017. We came because of the positive Yelp reviews . We were not disappointed in the menu, and the cook made queso sauce just for my husband , even though it was not on the menu. I ordered the tamales that came with arroz ( rice ) and delicious home made white beans that were perfectly seasoned. These beans were very good , and not the usual refried beans... Hubby ordered and enjoyed the Carne Asada dinner... his came with a roasted green chili pepper, tomatoes, lettuce , beans , rice and tortillas. He very much enjoyed his meal. You can ask for the imported Mexican Coca Cola .. it is slightly less sweet than American Coke.( in my opinion) We also tried the guacamole , the salsa and the chips... all yummy! This is a small grocery store in the front , with many Goya brand products etc. also , snack foods , soft drinks etc. This is not your usual Tex- Mex fare, and even though the only t v shows are in Espanol, if you enjoy authentic Mexican food at a great price , you will have to come to La Mexicana to see for yourself. I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by their guacamole- this is yummy and has pieces of onion , small pieces of tomato and is seasoned nicely . It isn't blended... but I'm sure it's made using a mortar and pestle( the best way to make fresh guacamole). My husband and I exited with smiles on our faces ... this is good food ! Muy Bien Amigos y amigas! I only wish we had discovered this place before now.

Yelp
Honestly, it's in a sketchy area/market. Walking in, I thought I was surely in the wrong place until I reached the back and saw the restaurant. Kind of strange how half the lights in the restaurant were off so my sister and I ate in relatively dim lighting. Besides the environment (which is very minor in my opinion), the food is great!! We had the burrito (definitely the star of the show and very cheap at 7 or 8$), tacos (good but not mind blowing), and the tostadas (second place, pretty good). All this food came out to be around 20$ or so. Additionally, chips and salsa with pickled onions were served and these were so good!!! Like worth dining in just to get these good. I would definitely return to La Mexicana and our server was great. Also another weird thing is how you go to the front of the store in the grocery to pay for your food.
google avatar

Laurie W.

Yelp
This restaurant is a hidden gem. It has a small grocery in the front so it's hidden in the back. The food was excellent & very good margaritas. I especially enjoyed the small bowl of thinly sliced onions with chopped habanero peppers. They were unique & spicy to add to your food. I liked that your meal is served with bottles of green jalapeño sauce and red chili pepper sauce. You can spice up your meal if you like. The food was very good, authentic, & inexpensive. This little hole in the wall restaurant has become a favorite!
google avatar

Zach T.

Yelp
It's a small restaurant at the back of a Mexican grocery. The food is fantastic and the staff is friendly. The burrito is gigantic for the price you pay and the quality is top notch. The queso is also great. They have Mexican sodas with real cane sugar, which is a plus. They have black label Valentinas on the tables, so you know they know what they're doing. The grocery is also worth mention. There's some great regional spices and sauces that would be difficult to find at a Winn Dixie or whatever.
google avatar

Sandy S.

Yelp
Prices were good. Food tasted good but couldn't get over the chucks of bone and fat. By the time my food cooled down the shells, both soft and corn, were too dried out to eat. The restaurant was in the back of a store front. May be good for a quick and fast bite to eat but not a sit down restaurant to enjoy a night out.
google avatar

Alvis L.

Yelp
This would be my third time here. Its always fairly quiet when I am here. When you walk in it looks like a typical Mexican bodega but as you head towards the back there is a decent size dining area with a counter in the back. The waitress speaks little english but is super friendly. So far i have eaten the beef burrito supreme, and tongue tacos on mais, and fajita tacos on mais. All delicious with the complementary condiments on the side which is a jalapeño based hot sauce and a chili based hot sauce. The meal combos always come with unlimited house made corn chips with excellent salsa and a small bowl of onions with exactly three limes. Also, the horchatas are muy bueno. They remind me of a soy milk with a twist of cinnamon. Aint no tex mex baby but its guuuuud.
google avatar

Tony M.

Yelp
The best Mexican food I've found down South!! The tacos were delicious and quality is wayy better than other restaurants in town. The store up front also has a lot to choose from if you're looking for Mexican groceries. Will return shortly to try the rest of their menu.
google avatar

Shantelle C.

Yelp
It was OK I had better I mean it wasn't spectacular. I had this watermelon juice it was OK if you like watermelon and sugar go for it because that's what it taste like. The food came out hot so that was a plus. The waitress I don't think she really spoke English so she didn't say too much. Over all the food was good.
google avatar

Yelp
This is true authentic Mexican food, that we love during our visits to Mexico. What a wonderful hidden gem in the back of a convenient store. The wait staff was as wonderful as the food was. The owner &/ Manager was very friendly, sharing that he use to work for Superior Grill for many years and even knew Carols our friend and Manger at Superior Grill in Shreveport Louisiana. This is a must visit for those that have not visited:)

Yelp
If you're looking for legit Mexican close to the I-10...this is the place! We were so happy to find this place enroute from Florida to Texas.

Yelp
I'm not sure a lot of people know this place is here because its kind of hidden in the Big Lots shopping center amongst all the other locales.Let me start off by saying that it's really small. When you walk in the door the front part is the store and the back part is the restaurant. In the front there are big regular-sized piñatas you can buy which is really cool because a lot of places just sell those small crappy ones. There are also a lot of other Latin American things(You know like things that you would normally find at the Fiesta & H.E.B. in Texas) like blankets, soft drinks, candy, sweet bread, canned goods, juices, bracelets, toys etc...its not really big but its worth a look.So when you walk in don't worry you're in the right place.I really like this little place, the people were nice, I really loved my food, the service was good and it was really cheap. I ordered the Carne Asada plate and Guacamole as my appetizer. To drink she said that sometimes they have Horchata, Flor de Jamaica (Hibiscus Tea. ) Watermelon juice etc...but they alternate on different days.I just ordered water because they were out of Horchata bc it was after 2pm and it was just after the lunch rush. They brought out chips & salsa of course, and there were several salsas that were really good & some tasty pickled onions too. When the Guacamole came out the portion was huge and you could tell that they had just made it because it tasted so fresh and delicious. This is the best Guacamole I've had in a long time, it was so good ! I almost just wanted to order some more and just eat that. I think we ate two baskets of chips with the Salsa, pickled Onions and the Guacamole because it was so delicious and addictive but we had to make ourselves stop to leave room for our food. The Carne Asada was marinated perfectly ,it was really tender and cooked just right. I'm definitely going back to get some more Guacamole but I think I'm gonna try the tacos or the tortas next time....maybe both. I don't know they also have lunch specials every day so who knows, I might try one of those.
google avatar

ruth s.

Yelp
What a great find. The food was delicious. The chips and salsa was very good and spicy. We ordered the carne asada and it was different than what we've had in the past. It came out in one piece rather than chopped. The grilled onions were delicious. The service was very good and friendly. I would definitely eat here again. Don't let the place fool you, the food was very good.
google avatar

Regan S.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place. The food is amazing, they have sweet little gifts at the counter and lots of groceries you can't find anywhere else. If I lived closer I'd eat here daily. The steak quesadillas are the BEST!

Ryan E.

Yelp
The service here is wonderful! Very authentic Mexican cuisine and they also have a small meat market and grocery section at the front of the store. The tacos are amazing and make sure you check them out for Taco Tuesday when they're $1 each!!!! Definitely worth it!
google avatar

Jackie C.

Yelp
After going to Big Lots, I remembered reading about this place. I thought they would be jammed since it was noon on a Friday, but far from it. Instead of getting the Enchilada plate, which is usually my go to order when trying a new place, I got a Torte, which is kinda like a po boy. I got the fajita beef one and it was good. The guacamole was good too, as were the onions. The chips? Not so much. The music was waaaaay too loud. But the food was good. I plan to go back and try some other items on the menu....
google avatar

Hunter G.

Yelp
In my opinion, the absolute best authentic Mexican food in Baton Rouge. It's so good that I've had bad experiences here, experiences bad enough that would keep me from returning to any other restaurant, but I keep returning for their food. I spent a few years in Southern California, and their food is exactly like what my friends' parents and grandparents used to make. I recommend the carne asada, tacos, and enchiladas. Their salsa trio is AMAZING! It's worth going there for the salsa alone. Oh, and the beans- by far the best around. My kids would eat the beans and rice by itself as toddlers, and still to this day. What kids do you know that straight up crush refried beans?

David F.

Yelp
Like other reviews have said, if you are looking for Tex-Mex, this isn't it. This is Mexican food. The staff is nice and helpful. The food is good.
google avatar

Paul J.

Yelp
Glad I found this place... Real Mexican food. Unlike most chain places... This place makes a burrito the way it's suppose to be made... It was very tasty and filling.. Being that my office is nearby, I'll be eating here quite often.. Good service, good food!
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
This place was in a shopping center. The server didn't speak any English. It's a small area behind a small grocery looking store. The food was OK, nothing special about it. I think the prices were a little too much for the quality.
google avatar

Erin S.

Yelp
Guacamole was delicious. Loved finding authentic Mexican!
google avatar

Teri D.

Yelp
Judy was our server and she was wonderfully patient with my pathetic ignorance. This is an extremely authentic Mexican restaurant. We were the only two people in the entire place that were born in America. Even the TVs were turn to Spanish-language stations, and I mean literally ALL the TVs on Spanish-language stations. The service from Judy was swift, friendly and on the money and she was terrific. The restaurant is in the back of a bodega-type convenience store where you can shop for authentic things like pickled cactus "leaves", spices and things you literally cannot find anywhere else and they have deli-type meats and a vast cornucopia of exotic goods--and they have corn husks for homemade tamales. Beloved husband had the enchiladas and I had the carne asada which had good flavor but the beans were that soupy sloppy salty hot mess I so loathe. The rice was just OK but the guacamole was excellent as were the free chips and interesting salsas of varying heats. The food was decent but not as good as Chava's in Edwardsville (see review) but the service was outstanding. I can't round up because the food doesn't deserve it but Judy is a 5 star server and the Mexican beer (Mondelo) was ice cold. The store part was nice too and I bought some spices that were 1/4th the price of the same thing at a grocery store. The aggregate score is 3.5 but had to give it a 3. It's not easy to find, but it's in the Big Lots Strip mall by the Dollar Tree at the other end of plaza where Zoroona is.

Patricia W.

Yelp
Very good. Authentic mexican-not tex mex. I sat and they brought out chips and salsa. I ordered the tacos which came out on soft corn tortillas for $2.50 there were two on the plate. Very good.

Rick S.

Yelp
Real Mexican food. I found everything very good, including the Mexican futbol on TV. I think I was the only English speaker at the time I went. A literal hidden gem in the back of the Mexican market. Well worth a shot.
