Atlanta’s 38 Best Restaurants | Eater Atlanta

"A family-owned and operated restaurant located in a small shopping complex on Old Peachtree, La Mixteca Tamale House serves up real-deal Oaxacan cuisine, along with righteous tamales. Expect the pizza-like tlayudas to be topped with mole con huevo or carne asada and chapulines (dried grasshoppers), and enjoy other traditional Oaxacan fare, like picaditas topped with cheese crumbles and salsa, and triangular tetelas filled with black bean paste. Tamales come in both sweet and savory varieties and are served individually, as plates with rice and beans, or as bowls with potatoes, crumbled cheese, and pico with a fried egg on top. Order a cold bottle of Modelo, take a seat, and dig in. Best for: Oaxacan fare and tamales." - Eater Staff

I wasn’t planning to write a review, but the response I got really pushed me to speak up. I visited on Saturday, craving a tlayuda since I’m from Oaxaca. I know they’re pricey, but I was excited for something that reminded me of home. Unfortunately, the meat was expired—it didn’t taste like meat at all, and I couldn’t even eat it. When I told the cashier, she dismissed it and said that wasn’t possible. I even asked her to try it, but she clearly didn’t care and didn’t offer a refund or any solution. This was a really disappointing experience. The lack of accountability made it worse. Be careful if you eat here—I personally wouldn’t recommend it. As you can see in the screenshot, I messaged them directly. The response I got was: “Maybe it could’ve been delivered expired.” Like what? So if that was the case why didn’t they train their workers to check the meat before serving it? And offer a refund if it’s not good? I was wrong on leaving I should’ve insisted for my money back.

Google
Hot food hot abd cold food cold .. this is a mantra I live by and they have this.. recently they added margaritas and it took me a year to try them and I’m here to tell you far better than anything in the area. It’s become routine to find in once a month and have a few because I n longer live in the state. But of course the best margaritas I’ve had in my life would be somewhere I use to live.. loll shrug shoulders.. I’m back today for 2 months and at least 2 weeks out of the month they will get sick of seeing me.. because somehow these drinks are detoxing and re-detoxing in a good way.. so I have to guess their using fresh ingredients.. I’ll miss these ladies

I was craving Mexican food so I decided to try out this place, and I am very glad I did! I got the tamale/taco plate with the asada taco and spicy green chicken tamale, and it was both very flavorful and affordable. The service was good and they prepared my takeout food very quickly. I will definitely be coming back to try their other items!

Google
Being a Oaxaca native I have enjoyed its delicious food and I have to say this place is legit. The menu seems a bit short but it offers all the basics, including the unique tlayuda. Everything was prepared well and it was delicious. The tamales bowl, not really a Oaxacan dish but inspired by, was great. The tlayuda was great, the chilaquiles are one of my favorites anywhere. The some was a fam favorite! Their margaritas are delicious! Their strawberry horchata was Their weakest, I'd stay away from that one.

Google
This was my first time visiting here. I ordered their "Breakfast Burrito" for takeout. Because of the great reviews about them. Let me say this: Hands Down this is one of the Best Breakfast Burritos that I have ever had. Coupled with green sauce they give you. It was like Heaven in my mouth. ..lol 😂. It was absolutely delicious. The burritos are huge. I ate half of it in the morning and the other half later in the evening. I will be visiting this place regularly. I've been in Duluth,Georgia for 4 years now and just now discovering this place. I highly recommend this place and can't wait to try the other dishes including the Tamales.

Google
Flavors were fantastic. Value was very high. We got the chicken tamale and taco plate and vegetarian tamale bowl. Highly recommend both. The restaurant has a very modern industrial feel. Order at the counter. If this place was closer to me, I'd be here at least once a week. I can easily see why it's rated so high.

Google
This is my second time visiting and every time the vibes are amazing and so is the food! Carne Asada Fries are a favorite. I definitely enjoyed my Valentine's drink: Cupids Favorite or something like that. Definitely coming back again!!!!

Google
First off the customer service was TOP tier, they were very friendly, sweet and most of all professional. Their environment was quiet and peaceful. Their food was a good decent portion and it was DEFINITELY affordable . The arroz con leche is the best and the horchata is fresh and delicious. I went during breakfast hours and food is served quickly so there is no wait line to dine in ! I will definitely come again 💕

Yelp
This place reminds me of Miami. The fresh squeeze orange juice and the style of cooking is very reminiscent of the Cuban spots in Miami. The tortillas are hand made and soft yet crispy from the griddle. The pastor was marinated well and they stuff their quesadillas and burritos. Fresh squeezed orange juice is a MUST. Will definitely be coming back for the tamales.

Yelp
Gone is the pleasant experience we used to have. Watch what you get charged for and what you actually get. Not the place it once was when they first opened years ago.

Yelp
My coworkers and I went here for a quick lunch! We've actually ordered it to our office before and were pleasantly surprised by how delicious the tamales are! This time I ordered a Red & Green tamale plate. They're very flavorful! The portion sizes are also really good. I didn't feel super full after finishing my plate which I really like. Our food was served really quickly, since it's a quick service/casual place.

Yelp
I wanted just a little snack for dinner while traveling and looked for local taco places. This had high rating and was nearby. It was the bomb. I had a quesabirra tacó and 2 empanadas - a chipotle chicken and a ground beef. It was all sogood!! Empanadas were fried fresh to order and the birria was one of the best things I have ever tasted. Ground beef empanada also had a few veggies in it, and chicken was stuffed full of meat. Pie crust and taco shells just tasted fresh and homemade. I will remember this place when I am passing through here again. Parking is a little limited as it shares its storefront with a gas station, but plenty of seating. The full menu is only available online, not in the store?? So do yourself a favor and do your research and order ahead for pick up, or come prepared to remind yourself what you want from your phone as you order.

Yelp
Update: it's been a while since we've been here. They have added more items to the menu. They took out the elote which I was sad about. I also feel like tamale size has decreased.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is amazing! Ambience is peaceful and service is outstanding! I love it here! I was going to post a picture of my Chilaquiles but totally forgot.

Kristi W.

Yelp
Don't let the gas pumps out front put you off this hidden gem! It's actually beside the gas station. It was a road trip on New Year's Day. Not many options. I walked to the "place your order" person and said "I'm vegan can you make some suggestions?" She wowed me with a black bean tamale bowl. Delicious. My husband got the carne asada taco plate. Way to go La Mixteca Tamale House!!

Yelp
As a vegetarian Californian of Mexican heritage I am used to an abundance of great Mexican locations. Obviously, the south lacks that. I drove an hour and 15 minutes to try this location out since they offer vegetarian and vegan tamales. I was impressed and glad I made the drive out. I will definitely make more long drives just for the tamales. Even my children loved it so much I had to keep on getting in line to buy more food. They also offer your standard meat tamales as well as other dishes.

Laura W.

Yelp
I'm from Houston and back in the day in the office building I worked in sometimes woman would bring home made tamales to sell. A dozen, wrapped in Saran Wrap w steam inside. Sooooo delicious. I've lived all over dine 2000 and never found tamales as good. TIL my first visit to La Mixteca. Excellent and delicious! I love the green chicken tamales, but they are a little spicy. Beware. I don't really get much of anything else here because I'm so in love with the tamales. But I've seen other people with plates that look delicious. This place is a gem!
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I'm not into tamales, but this place has the BEST tamales in Suwanee!! and is actually the best that have ever had. I always bring it to my family when I'm in the area. Highly recommend it
google avatar

Caroline P.

Yelp
Adequate at best. Polite servers who were helpful with their menu. We special ordered a quesadilla and it was fresh, hot and as we ordered it We also ordered a tamale plate. We ordered 1 rajas and one black bean. The rice was hard, the beans were good and the tamales had no distinctive flavors. I won't drive from Buford Highway to visit again. Sorry.
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
A friend recommended the tamales here and husband has really been enjoying them; he shared that the rice and beans are also very flavorful. I tried the carne asada tacos and the steak was flavorful. We enjoy their salsa and it's full of heeeeat. You place your order at the counter and staff will bring it to your seat. I believe you clean up yourself but it's a bit unclear. The interior is nicely decorated with plenty of seating. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was full. Parking can be a difficult as it is shared with a bank and BP gas station.

Yelp
No pues GUAO!!! The food here slaps!! I took advantage and Ordered a breakfast burrito when I arrived to pick up my tamale preorder. I ordered the one with eggs a la mexicana and no rice, no meat and it was SO good. My tamale preorder was one dozen (half rajas and half pork - mild red) and man they do not disappoint!! Barely any pictures cause we devoured the "taste test" lol. Next time when I eat-in I'll take pics but guao...these tamales are the real deal. Tamales have always been one of those foods where the majority of people who make them suck at it but people just accept the mediocrity cause, well, they're tamales. Not me though...if they aren't good I don't want them. But this place is THE TRUTH!!! Highly recommend the food here and especially the tamales!! Service is very efficient and cordial. Five stars...easily!!
google avatar

Greg A.

Yelp
I don't know what all these people are thinking giving this place 4.5 stars (as of this writing). I ordered a pork tamale and a chicken tamale. The pork tamale was pretty average. The chicken tamale was dry and had a weird texture that had me wondering if it was actually chicken. I was told their green sauce is the spicy sauce and the red sauce was mild, but it felt like the opposite to me. This place doesn't serve alcohol, so if you want a Pacifico or a Modelo with your tamales, this isn't the place.
google avatar

Joua N.

Yelp
The parking situation is terrible. There is no ample parking since it's next to a gas station. We had to park in the shopping complex next to it, which isn't adjacent to the restaurant building. The restaurant size is spacious. It wasn't busy on a Friday afternoon during lunch. Our food came out quickly, and the cashier was friendly. The drinks are self-serve. The food is average at best. Nothing really "wowed" me. It wasn't terrible, but it also isn't a place I'd come out of my way to visit again.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
These are really good authentic tamales. I like the red and green. Personally I need quite a few to feel full but they are delicious and the service is fast.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good tamales , highly recommend the quesabirria tacos. Coke machines has that good coke too

Yelp
One of the best if not the best tamale place that I have found in northern Atlanta. I love tamales. Ever since my college roommate introduced them to me with her grandmothers tamales from Mexico, it's been impossible to turn back. Now the question is how good are they? These tamales are legit. There's an abuela in the back manning the kitchen. They have both salty and sweet tamales. My favorite is the pork tamale with green sauce. Pork tamale with green sauce.: - Packed and serve the steaming hot. - Generous portion size for a tamale - Not stingy with the meat on the inside. Cons;- none Two tamale platter: two tamales served with refried beans and Mexican rice. Pros: - generous portion of sides - Both rice and beans were perfectly flavored. - Definitely a hefty lunch portion if you have two tamales with it. - Able to share, if you wanted to add one of the other items on the menu, such as a torta or quesadilla. Cons: - none This place was actually so good, that my parents got it two additional times after I got the first round for them. The tamales actually freeze really well and reheat by steaming. You can steam either in microwave by wrapping a wet paper towel around it, or just steaming in a steamer. I definitely wish I could buy these in bulk. The only thing that would make this absolutely the bomb, and this is more of a personal taste, would be if they had a side of white queso Blanco to dip the tamale in. Definitely stocking up on these most. Definitely coming back.

Sheryl M.

Yelp
I rarely find tamales that I like and after hearing of this place, made my way over with my sister-in-law and found tamales I loved. Unique place. Decoration is interesting. I got the Tamale plate. 1. Chicken with green salsa. 1. Veggie tamale and a dessert tamale (who knew) pina colada. You order at the counter, get a number and have a seat. A nice young lady brought order to the table. The beans and rice were delish. Each tamale was so good. This was a great experience plus finding tamales to enjoy. If you like tamales and they are as wonderful each time, this spot will see me often.

Yelp
Came here with my son and his friend as their high school is just a few mins away. We got rajas, chicken with salsa verde and the dessert pumpkin spice tamale with ice cream. Both the rajas and chicken tamales were seasoned well, great masa to filling ratio and the masa was moist and not dry. The rajas was slightly spicy which I really enjoyed. The ladies at the counter were helpful and sweet and the restaurant is really clean (so is the bathroom) and spacious. The pumpkin spice tamales had pecans, whipped cream, walnuts and came with ice cream on the side. The tamales were just sweet enough, perfect texture (sort of like a crumbly firm cake tamale) and the spices incorporated were really flavorful. The ice cream was really creamy and light! Each tamale is about $3-6 depending on your filling so a very cost effective snack or meal! We will definitely be back to try more flavors.
google avatar

Kathy C.

Yelp
I saw this place on my way to the grocery store. I tried the chicken tamales - both spicy (green) and not spicy (red). Pros: Food came out very quickly. Cons: The chicken was VERY dry. The masa had absolutely no flavor but the texture of it was decent. I would not recommend this place.

Yelp
The customer service is amazing. & After bringing my coworkers here, it's become our go-to lunch spot! Love being able to share this place with friends, family, & colleagues!

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Amazing food, great price and friendly staff. This is one of my favorite spots for delicious tamales and sopes.

Cristopher J.

Yelp
I always used to eat here when I lived in the area but when I moved to Smyrna, I had to stop. I was so happy when I came back to visit a friend because we stopped by twice today, once for lunch and again for dinner (yes, I had to take advantage of my visit to Suwanee because I missed the food so much.) I ordered the cucumber-lime with chia agua fresca and it is so fresh and good every time. The owner Stacey told me it is made fresh throughout the day using fresh cucumbers and lime (the secret it out) for lunch I got the 5 tamales (green chicken, red pork, and my favorite the cheesy rajas). I devoured every one of them and left no crumbs. For dinner I got the tamale bowl with a green chicken tamale and green pork tamale with the egg over easy. The flavors of the tamale bowl were amazing. From the cabbage to the potatoes bits to the egg on top coupled with pico and queso fresco, and so much more, I truly think this place is underpriced. Don't hate me but I did recommend to the owner to evaluate her pricing because I want to see them here for years to come. Tamales are $3 each and for the quality and taste, it definitely should be about $4 because if you've ever made tamales, you know this takes all day, and I certainly dont even have a half a day to spare. Overall, I'm sad to go back to Smyrna but can't wait to come back again soon. I do have some tea though and I was told that a new location is in the works for the Upper West-Side (not sure if I'm supposed to mention it but I wasn't told not to).
google avatar

Dana O.

Yelp
We tried a few plates here and overall, it's a 3.5. The tamale plate was a 4. The others were 3/5. We tried the popular dishes including the tamale bowl and plate. We felt that the tamale with chicken itself was good and soft. But overall, everything was under seasoned and a bit plain. The tamale plate was the best one which was tamales with rice and beans. The tamale bowl's tamales were cold. I tried the mole one and it was a dry chicken, but I was expecting a warm sauce, which is what is to be expected for mole. The chilequiles had potential but also lacked flavor. I wish the steak was in smaller pieces. They did have a red and green sauce available to add but I don't it was mainly just adding heat. Dishes were a fair price starting around $10.

Naomi G.

Yelp
Love the tacos. They were well seasoned and for what I was looking for very traditional
google avatar

Vincent V.

Yelp
Stumbled in one morning and gave it a try, and now cannot pass up a good bite. They have an extensive breakfast menu option open up at 6. I and have authentic tamales that really hit the spot. Only enjoyed the morning fare but it's all been top quality and friendly service.
google avatar

Tamika B.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant. I'm in here 3-5 times a week. Tamales are excellent, authentic and always fresh.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Definitely going back!! They are the closest to Tamales from Tijuana, Mexico/ San Diego, Ca. We miss our tamales so much and these are definitely a taste of home. Super friendly and helpful staff. Good pricing too, the seating area is nice and big, clean and tidy. Great selection of foods, plates and drinks.
google avatar

Royo Y.

Yelp
The tamales, service, decor were very good. Quite a bit smaller than what I'm used to, but the taste and texture were spot on. The soup was also very traditional. Happy to have different menu for Mexican food.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
We've eaten at Mixteca Tamale house twice and have been very happy both times! It's in a strip mall with a gas station so the parking can be tricky but TRUST ME, it's worth it!! Our favorites have been the Chilaquiles verde with asada and the green pork tamale bowl. The elote was delicious too. Everyone is friendly and they have an nice seating area inside. The food comes out quickly! I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed their food and we will definitely be back again and again!
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
What happened?! The tamales got hella small - now even three don't fill up this pequeno chino's belly up no more, and they are so stingy with the salsa! Give it up! Still good flavors but the inflation is coming down, y'all probably need to follow the trend.

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Breakfast burritos and quesabirria tacos were fantastic. We eat here when we are in Suwanee/Duluth.
google avatar

Rosalinda Q.

Yelp
Feels like it's for white American people and not people who are Mexican/ Hispanic. The food is good but I'd rather support a more authentic Mexican restaurant. It's pretty in a gentrified way.

Debbie G.

Yelp
Good food and friendly staff! Love the breakfast meals and juices! Will come Back soon.
google avatar

Tim V.

Yelp
Excellent tamales in a clean family atmosphere. Definitely recommend to anyone in the area.
google avatar

Hugo T.

Yelp
Pretty authentic Mexican food! I love it but my family prefer Tex mex. A must try if you're in the area!!!!!
google avatar

Lesly G.

Yelp
We loved this hidden spot! Handmade tortillas for the win. Also las aguas están buenas
google avatar

Rich R.

Yelp
Like Southern food? How about Southern Mexican Food? Apparently others do as I have never seen this place empty! The Tamales are BIG at La Mixteca. Apparently "Oaxacan" style. I was a bit skeptical when combination plates included just 2 tamales, but it's just right. I added 1 more tamale to a combination plate and couldn't finish! (well. . .not that night at least. . .finished that job at lunch the following day!) Nice variety of fillings and sauces. Great service! Very good sides, rice, beans. Their choice of takeout containers also top shelf, very study and keeps each item separated. I have a short list of "must haves" when in this part of greater Atlanta, and La Mixteca definitely makes the list! Recommended! Esp if in the mood to try something a bit different!!
google avatar

Jane Y.

Yelp
Not as tasty and not as much meat as well as the size has gotten smaller. Still decent tamales though! I enjoy the tongue taco though!
google avatar

Tj M.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Nice and clean inside. Atole, elote, champorrado, lengua taco were good. Chilaquiles were cold and only ok ate they heated them up more. Pastor taco was flavored good but was dry. Tamales... what their name is about, very doughy masa and not cooked enough. Very few options available. Don't get the packaged conchas, they are not fresh. At least a few days old.
google avatar

Lionel T.

Yelp
Over priced, over hyped, over it. Went there a couple of times, service is good but just lacking in flavor. Also again too pricey, I'm used to paying 1.50$ for a tamale from the lady in the corner that's got them in a big pot in her shopping cart... and they way better tasting.
google avatar

Julie K.

Yelp
Found my Mexican we just ate here and absolutely loved it can't wait to go back the tamales taste just like my husbands grandmas
google avatar

Reggie P.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place. The restaurant itself was great. Clean and spacious. The service was good. The Tamales were great. Did not disappoint. Flavorful and tender. A 10/10. I also ordered a carne asada burrito. That was a disappointment. No flavor, dry and tough. The carne asada tasted like it had been sitting in a warmer all day. Just way over cooked. 1/10 I may try this place again, but won't go out of my way to do so.

Daryl G.

Yelp
Had one tamale. Tender, fresh and tasty- cooked perfectly. They are small but inexpensive.
google avatar

Jennifer P.

Yelp
Parking is atrocious during lunch but for a good reason. Everyone wants to eat here (that and it shares a parking lot with the BP gas station). Their tamales is similar to home made tamales. I always change up the protein but they are all very good and I LOVE their beans. It's perfectly salted and seasoned. I think I would eat it if it was a soup. I get their horchata. Perfect for a hot summer day. It's very sticky and very sweet. I always have to ask for extra ice. I think it's very considerate of them to give me little ice so I can get more drink for my buck. I see a big sign on their window that they serve breakfast. I want to come back for that. BTW My co worker has gotten their tortas and omg it's huge!!

Al R.

Yelp
Food was just ok, service good, ambiance fair, I have had better food with a lot more flavor.
google avatar

Vanessa L.

Yelp
Just ate here today and enjoyed it so much I wanted to review! Absolutely delicious food. Restaurant was nice and clean, had a decent amount of seating and food came out rather quickly. The menu is quite diverse and there are plenty of options to choose from, especially, as the name suggests, for tamales! I had a carne asada burrito that was HUGE and came with chips. Chips were very good too. My dad got a chorizo quesadilla which he devoured and raved about. The elote street corn was phenomenal and was the best I've ever had. All the food came out fast and was hot, and absolutely delicious! Additionally, their variety of salsas were great and have a spice level for every type of person. This restaurant is awesome for a quick and causal lunch, but still flavorful and mouth watering. I also am intrigued by their variety of breakfast items, so I will definitely be back!!

Kathy C.

Yelp
I tried the chicken tamales, both the spicy and not spicy. I was very disappointed since the place was highly rated. Unsure if it was just maybe this particular batch but the masa was very bland and had no flavor. The chicken was very dry.
