Where to Eat Magnificent Mexican Food in New Orleans

"The Riverbend neighborhood loved La Mansión, the fun, homey Mexican restaurant tucked away on Dublin Street (and its owners, Edwin Alonzo and Veronica Cardona), so it’s great news that they’ve recreated something similar in a more prominent address just a few blocks away. It’s probably best suited for takeout, but if Alonzo is around, it’s worth trying to chat him up (and to try one of his margaritas)." - Clair Lorell

19 Tasty Taco Destinations in New Orleans

"Meat, cilantro, onions, fresh tortillas, salsa verde, and a squeeze of lime — simplicity shines with the tacos at this second restaurant from Edwin Alonzo and Veronica Cardona (their first, La Mansión, was a funky favorite on Dublin Street). Try the asado de puerco, a lesser-seen option, and favorites like the cochinita pibil and carnitas. 5 for $11.50 makes for a good deal." - Beth D'Addono, Clair Lorell

Yelp
New restaurant from the owner of La Mansion! I'm so glad to see them still in the neighborhood. Their food is so good and tastes authentic! California burrito was great, chips are freshly made and salsa has nice heat to it and isn't overly watery. Suizas enchilada is yummy! Queso had a nice kick. Honestly this place is great, not a great place for large groups and suits takeout style but does have a few tables. Taco Tuesday as well. Happy hour 3-6!

Yelp
Well what a treat. Two dollar tacos on TUESDAY nights. And how delicious they were. I ordered one chicken, pork and ground beef and they were delicious. Covered in cheese and guacamole, what a treat. My favorite was the pork, but the other two were equally delicious.

Yelp
Amazing Hispanic food. Finally the first Hispanic food place that is delicious and amazing to go to. This will be my go to spot for all hispanic food for as long as i am in New Orleans. There's a very lovely spot to sit at outside and people watch; my girlfriend and I loved it. It's right next to a large oyster bar as well so one can go grab a drink from there later. - The restaurant was clean but empty and so I sort of wish more people would go here to support the place. The owners are very nice and get all the food out rapidly. I want to keep it a secret but this place deserves a lot more business. Go here!

Yelp
Owner is extremely rude and the food was not good. We ordered 2 hard tacos and received soft tacos for my 6 year old daughter which she will not eat and he proceeded to argue and say we did not order hard tacos when all three of us heard my husband say hard tacos. We tasted the tacos our daughter was given and they were not good at all, very strange flavor. I sure wouldn't eat them and my daughter definitely wouldn't.

Yelp
I admit, I was hesitant to try this place just because my expectations for Mexican food are very high and I haven't found anything good in the 2 years I've been living here. But my friend worked next door and always orders the Camarones a la Diabla. I decided to try it. AMAZING! The chile sauce is deceptively spicy-it creeps up on you and makes you feel all warm and fuzzy. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. The rice is surprisingly good (especially when you mix it in the chile.) I can't move now because I ate it all! Get this! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Delicious handmade tortillas! Guac and asada tacos were awesome. Comfy, casual spot with great service.

Yelp
Yes!! Finally some good TX-Mex ish food. I'm from Dallas and since moving to NOLA I've been on a hunt for some good enchiladas and this finally fed my craving. Don't get me wrong, there is good real Mexican food around, but not Tex-Mex. This place is a mom and pop shop - delicious! The Margaritas are hand made the Jalapeño was so very fresh tasting. My husband loved his chicken fajitas, but in my opinion, the beans and enchiladas stole the show! I had a beef and a cheese, both made my day, I loved the sauce on top. The beans are red beans cooked the charro way tasty!! Service was friendly too. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
So many thoughts... I was greeted when I walked in the door. They went over the very extensive menu with me. We selected the food and chips and guacamole. I knew the guacamole was fresh because I watched her make it from scratch in front of me. They kept me company while I waited. The food was plentiful, delicious and incredibly affordable. Food for dinner with left overs for less than $25 !!! I am going to try everything!!

Yelp
Good food, decent portions, kind of weird vibes in the restaurant. Went twice and it was empty both times, once on a Friday evening and the other on a Saturday afternoon. I think it works better as a take out spot.

Yelp
The atmosphere is chill, calm and authentic. They have a full liquor license IMO if you come here, you must try the bacon wrapped shrimp it is so delectable . The queso is delicious; Hot and creamy with a little kick at the end Chicken in the tacos is juicy and flavorful The tortillas have a soft, texture and a light flavor The only reason I'm not giving this place five stars: the tacos were served on the paper plate. Appetizer on glass. My shots were served in to go cups, and only one of us was served water. Other than major server inconsistencies the ambience is amenable and the food is amazing.

Yelp
Ordered a California burrito with rice & beans to go. Ate half the burrito & almost became immediately sick. Tried a bite of the rice & it was over cooked. Didn't even touch the beans. Almost $20 for a meal that was horrible. Do not recommend

Yelp
The nicest people and such amazing food!! The service is amazing and attentive. We only had queso and a chicken quesadilla with rice and beans, all of it was were great. The rice was sooooo good. I highly recommend checking out this place and supporting this local restaurant!!

Scott S.

Yelp
Great authentic food! Hot and fast! You can taste how fresh the food was cooked! This place is a Gem!

Yelp
Yessssss. I'll admit that I'm not super familiar with what authentic Mexican food is supposed to taste like, as I have never traveled South but this place is excellent. This restaurant boasts authentic Mexican food and I can taste the difference in their dishes. They have an incredible 5 tacos for $10 deal that can't be beat and all of the ingredients are fresh. I also had the queso with some of the crispiest chips in town (my favorite)!

Yelp
This place is a best kept secret! Scratch corn tortillas, delicious Suizas Enchiladas- and yummy margaritas! a must dine at this casual and awesome place!

Yelp
The food here is just great! I came here with two other people for dinner maybe an hour before closing. There's one large window in the sitting area, so you get to people watch and enjoy your meal lol. We were serviced very quickly. I ordered the chicken fajitas, which were about $15. It comes with rice, beans, guac, salsa and tortillas. I loved everything on the plate! The chicken, onions and peppers were PIPING hot when they sat the sizzling skillet down. I had to give it about 5-10 minutes to cool, so I started with the beans and rice. The rice was perfect. It's soft and hot. The beans were soooo flavorful! I thought it was well seasoned and came with a nice portion. The entire meal was great and I highly recommend it! I will definitely order it again.

Yelp
The best Mexican food we have had in NO. We love the street tacos (Al pastor is my favorite, carne asada is my second favorite) and the fresh house margaritas. The tortillas, chips, salsas are all made in house! Yum!!!
google avatar

Caleb M.

Yelp
Excellent carnitas and pibil. Good pastor and asado de puerco. Asada wasn't my favorite, but portions of all the meats were pretty fantastic considering tacos are $2.50 each ($2.30 each if you order 5). They also do great rice and beans, which it feels like is so rare at mexican places in the U.S.. The beans have a great depth of flavor and are slightly smokey, and the rice is light and fluffy, but also buttery and smooth. Great stuff from a little neighborhood joint that feels like a nice, homey spot.

Yelp
Came to this spot for a nice dinner meal and I left a happy customer. This place is what I would call a typical mom and pop shop. I had tacos and it was delicious. The owner is super friendly and nice.

Yelp
Great food, service and drinks!!! Authentic and fresh. Smoked salsa and the best enchiladas in the city.
google avatar

Anjali R.

Yelp
This place is amazing I can't wait to come back. The prices are really good and the owner is friendly. Honestly some of the best food I've had in New Orleans. They have a happy hour 3-6 which I would like to try next time.

Laura F.

Yelp
Love this place! It has been completely empty the two times I've been, both on Friday nights. I was so confused. Service is excellent and food is delicious and authentic. I had the cilantro enchiladas the first time and shrimp tacos the second time, both with rice and charro beans. Absolutely delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent fresh food! Nice owners. Highly recommend. Park around the corner... The crispy tacos are amazing.

Yelp
Forever a La Patrona stan. Their small but mighty restaurant and team gets sh*t done and continuously puts out amazing food. While everything on the menu sounds great, we stick to our same order every time. Don't sleep on the Smoked Cheese, a must-get if you're dining at the restaurant. It comes in a sizzling hot skillet with homemade tortilla chips and is the best thing ever. The green chicken enchiladas are always piping hot out of the oven and have plenty of flavor. Enchiladas come with rice and beans. The Nachos Mix are layered with plenty of meat (shrimp, chicken, AND steak), plus sour cream, guac, and jalapenos. We get the refried beans on the side so it doesn't make the chips soggy. And it's all super affordable too. Give them a try next time you want Mexican food in NOLA that is actually authentic and prepared with lots of love.

Yelp
Spent all day walking around Nola and were craving Mexican. Luckily found this gem tucked away at the end of St. Charles. Incredibly friendly family running the restaurant and the food was delicious! Exactly what we were looking for. $10 for 5 tacos (cochinita was unreal) and $4 margaritas since it happened to be happy hour. Girlfriend had the tamale plate - also delicious. Go here. You won't regret it.

Yelp
OMG this is my Taco Tuesday go to from now on! They have fresh, homemade ttortillas and the varety of taco is more than nay other taco tuesday in the city. I had tongue - you heard me -TONGUE tacos, they were so tender and good! The chicken and the steak were my next favorites. The margarita, the Cadillac margarita, was STRONG. I only needed the one. The tacos are not only incredible and authentic, but it is a great deal at 5 tacos for $10 on Tuesdays. There are so many more things I want to try on the menu. I thought the service was great too. The restaurant is on the smaller side and you have to go up a few steps to get into the restaurant. Limited parking in the front.

Yelp
Great food great costumer service and all around a great restaurant to go eat at with your family

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and my friend and I stumbled across this wonderful restaurant today. It seems to be a small family owned place and one owner, Dad, was the server with the other owner, Mom, doing the cooking. We got tacos and Veggie Chile Relenos, both were excellent. The service was fast, everything very fresh and authentically made. The margaritas were so good that I had to say "Wow!" on my first sip. The salsa was definitely homemade and probably a special family recipe-so delicious! The decorations all around the place were so cheerful and adorable. It's nice to see pride and loving effort put in to a business. I highly recommend La Patrona.

Yelp
We like small, family owned restaurants with authentic taste. We found that here. Not fancy, but the food was awesome. Honestly wish I could have eaten more. Nice menu selection with some interesting items that I will just have to go back and try. The pricing was very reasonable. Since it was our first time, we chose classics - tacos and tamales. Both were fantastic. We left happy and full.

Robin M.

Yelp
Calling all La Patrona fans - please be sure to include La Patrona in your regular restaurant rotation and show them some love. They can use the extra money to help recover some of their financial loss from a recent break-in and burglary. If you've never been and you like Mexican, give them a try. Their food is delicious.

Yelp
I saw a Facebook ad for this place. I was unaware of it (last I knew it was a hot dog joint!). Anyway, decided to check it out. For parking, this area is a problem. It's got a spot or two in front, but with Cooters there, it's street and "where ever you can" sitch'. Small place with seating for maybe 20? THE FOOD: A lot of the menu looks good, and they do have Taco Tuesday everyday, 5 for $10. I got 2 lengua tacos and Tampiqueño, which is 2 cheese enchiladas, flank steak, rice and charro beans. The lengua tacos were good, and had some kind of thin gravy on them. First time I had gravy on lengua tacos. But it tasted good. Cilantro and onion. They had a very tasty salsa (green) that had a little heat and good flavor. The charro beans were good and had good flavor also. The cheese enchiladas were a "miss" for me. Kind of bland, tasteless. The skirt steak was really good. Had a nice char on it, seasoned well and very tender. The rice is not typical spanish rice. It's really good though.
google avatar

Anise B.

Yelp
Great tacos! It's taco Tuesday everyday 5 for $10 and they are not mediocre. Try the Cadillac margarita you will not regret it. Real authentic feel.

Yelp
Went here on a date night and is now one of my favorite places. I'm semi- addicted to their bacon wrapped jalapeño stuffed shrimp.

Yelp
New Mexican spot on the radar! In my efforts to seek out the best Mexican food in New Orleans, I decided to try this new place that just opened in August. I saw that they were doing 5 tacos for $10 and thought at the very least it would be a good deal. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that not only was the food reasonably priced, it was all delicious! We got the mix nachos, mole enchiladas, and 5 tacos with 3 different pork, carne asada, and cow tongue. Each chip in the nachos was loaded and tasty -- probably my favorite part of the meal. The tacos were all incredible too. They also have great happy hour deals and tasty margaritas, including a jalepeno one. Definitely coming back so I can try more of the menu. I would recommend carry out as they only have 5 tables for indoor seating (+ it's still COVID). 5 stars!!

Nola F.

Yelp
I have been eating here at least once a month, sometimes 2 for the last 8 months. This is a small husband and wife run establishment. Food is very good. I get the top shelf margarita with Tajin on the rim. The California burrito and charro beans are so good.

Tyler O.

Yelp
Delicious enchiladas, relaxed intimate vibe with an authentic touch. Great reliable food

Dan B.

Yelp
Not great. They put lettuce inside a hot burrito making it soggy. Chips and salsa are $4.95. The place was dirty.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
This place exceeded my expectations! The freshest food I've had in a long time and the service was fantastic! They easily accommodated our large group and brought out fresh, flavorful food very quickly! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Hayley B.

Yelp
Love love love this place! Margarita's are delicious and the food was spectacular, you can easily tell everything was made in house. The chips were super thick and crunchy and the suizas enchiladas were super spicy and full of fresh flavors. 10/10 would recommend!
google avatar

Marc B.

Yelp
Update: ordered delivery on the weekend - super satisfied. Hit the spot, good portions, fresh food. Get the nachos
google avatar

Brianna A.

Yelp
boyfriend and I followed these folks over from their old restaurant La Mansion. The food is authentic and everything tastes homemade. The salsa is a green salsa with a unique flavor and the queso is fantastic! Lots of vegetarian options including the spinach enchiladas which are the bomb. Fresh squeezed margaritas are perfect and don't taste like a mix like most places. 5 for $10 Street style tacos everyday! Ample portions, lovely family atmosphere, wonderful service. If you're tired of Mexican food that tastes like literally nothing (I'm looking at you Carreta's ) and inauthentic dishes please try this place out!

Marlene M.

Yelp
Went here today 4/14/2022 to get the Chile Relleno plate and I was very disappointed. The pepper was hard and very small, so I only had a few bites. They charge for chips and salsa $4.50, so I had the queso and chips which was very good. The beans are not refried, but more of a bean soup - that that too was good. I told the waiter I was disappointed in the chile relleno and he didn't even say sorry - he said, "I'll tell her." I will not be going back as now there are many other options in New Orleans for Mexican food
google avatar

Sarah Jane R.

Yelp
Most delicious tortillas I've ever had! The staff are GREAT, the food is even better. I am a huge fan of al pastor and these were the best al pastor tacos ever. Extremely authentic and delicious. I'll return here ASAP!

Kelly P.

Yelp
Little neighbourhood gem in Riverbend. There are a few Mexican places in the Carrollton area but this remains our favorite. Very casual vibe that immediately reminds me of some of my go to Los Angeles spots. Feels family run and they definitely take the time to remember you. Love their fresh margaritas, addictive salsa and enchiladas. Portions are large and made to order (they're super amenable with an special requests) so if you're looking for fast food.. I'd say try Taco Bell.

Tati P.

Yelp
EVERYTHING was amazing. The owner/chef makes everything herself and you can tell it's all made with love. Chips and Salsa are included with the meal (she makes some of the best salsa I've ever had). My party all had the 5 tacos for $10 and they were absolutely incredible. The carnitas were everyone's favorite!! They came with a salsa verde that was really spicy but so good that even though our mouths were burning we kept dipping the tacos in it. The place only opened up 4 months ago. If you're looking to support a local/family owned business, definitely give this place a try!!!
google avatar

Kelsey L.

Yelp
The tacos were very good! I tried almost all of them and loved the lengua. The michelada was awesome too! Great prices--will definitely go back!

Marie F.

Yelp
I am not saying anything about the food or beverage quality, but I just got back from a 6 margarita + snack visit (3 people) and specifically requested top shelf margaritas (and watched them being prepared from the regular shelf over the shoulder). Thinking I must be mistaken (we have been customers for a while now, tracing back to La Mansion), I saw another person order the same thing and got Don Julio tequila (twice). I was charged for top shelf, I paid top shelf, and tipped on top shelf. I will not be back. Sorry, I have roots in F&B. This is not acceptable.

Janet M.

Yelp
This place was absolutely amazing! It doesn't hold too many dinners but it's authentic cuisine is fantastic! Definitely don't miss this little gem!
google avatar

Chandler H.

Yelp
I stopped in after going to Cooter Browns I tried basically all their tacos. All were good. I also got their white cheddar caeso- it was YUM! Their bathroom was clean too-

Dori S.

Yelp
My favorite little gem! To me by far the best Mexican food & margaritas in the entire metro area! Go there quite often!
