Best Restaurants in Wilmington, Delaware, a Short Trip From Philly | Eater Philly

"This family-friendly pizzeria, from Michael Tumolo and his son Daniel, slings wood-fired Neapolitan-inspired pies cooked to charred, blistered perfection in a showpiece Forza Forni oven. Situated a bit north of downtown, and conveniently located next door to Wilmington Brew Works, La Pizzeria Metro also makes stromboli, calzones, pasta, nachos, and for dessert, s’mores pizza with Nutella." - Ernest Owens

The Best Restaurants In Wilmington, Delaware - Wilmington - The Infatuation

"Every city needs a beloved pizza parlor, and La Pizzeria Metro is Wilmington’s. Pies here are thin, crisp, and wood-fired, with names like the Trolley Square, a neighborhood in Wilmington that inspired a buffalo chicken pizza, or the Rodney Square, which has chicken sausage and broccoli rabe on ricotta. There’s also standard stuff like calzones and strombolis, as well as a few vegetables you could order to make your mom proud." - maddy sweitzer lamme

Everything Pizzería Metro makes is amazing! I’ve ordered takeout a few times and it’s ready super fast, I’ve had big orders and surprised at the turnaround time. The pizza tastes fresh and flavorful, I always order it well done because if not it doesn’t have a good crisp. The wings are delicious and the garlic knots are a must try!

This was the first time going there after hearing about it from a few friends. Decided to try it out on a Friday night for dinner and it did not disappoint. Atmosphere was great crowd was good and you can tell that they have a great clientele. Our server was super friendly, checked on us frequently and ensure that we were taken care of. As for food, it was amazing. Placed an order for appetizers and they came out super quick our main dishes, which were the two pizzas took a normal amount of time and tasted great! We left with full stomach’s and leftovers for the next day.

My husband and I love La Pizzeria Metro. We visited the first week it opened a few years ago and hadn’t been back until the start of this summer (2023). It quickly became our favorite pizza spot locally. We love the personal size of the pizzas, and the options available. I am a vegetarian so pizza is a number one option for me. I think the prices are great for the amount of food and the taste. It’s a very nice bar, and the servers are great. We have become regulars and the servers and hosts remember our faces which is really nice to see when you are a local. My husband actually says this place is his favorite pizza around. He gets The Market Street. We will definitely keep coming, and we enjoy the friendly faces. The only draw back can be kids because they can get loud, but that is what it is. Thank you for being a great neighborhood spot.

Google
Hands down the best pizza in North Wilmington. The sauce is flavorful and delicious, toppings aren’t skimped, and the crust has the right amount of char but definitely not too much. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside and the staff has always been very accommodating when my wife and I have brought our two young children in. I don’t think I can eat any other pizza in N. Wilmington anymore - it will always be Metro.

Google
Ordered a NY calzone. I heard good things about here and the reviews. Buuut why did they charge me $16 for dough and 2 teaspoons of filling hardly no ricotta so I pulled the dough off to open it. A mess just look at the photos and the guys who waited on me rude. Had my name wrong and didn’t care to fix it just gave me my food which was cold like ok just take your food and go. Never going back which I’m sure they could care less.

Not only is this my favorite pizza shop because of the different flavors for everyone and the friendly staff, but La Pizzeria helped us host my friend’s Engagement Party which turned out to be a beautiful night with a great aesthetic. The staff is awesome and seem excited to serve customers! Not pictured are all the different cocktails available!! They have a great drink menu for everyone’s taste. I personally love their dessert cocktails. I wish this place the best and hope they continue to thrive :)

Google
My personal favorite pizza spot, authentic pizza and a nice atmosphere, their appetizers are also very good. I love their wings and garlic knots and the presentation of the food is immaculate. Unfortunately they don't deliver far as I know.

Google
One of the best pizzas in the neighborhood if you're in the mood for some Neapolitan. Place has good vibes, and great pizza. Just don't go in expecting a New York slice. Prices are a bit on the higher end but worth it!

Yelp
Great interesting pizzas with quality ingredients! Hard working team! Fun bistro vibe , sit at the counter to watch the chefs cook!

Yelp
Food is well priced, service is quick, pizza is tasty. Hot honey is always meant to be on pizza. Food so good, I made a second trip back for dessert!

Yelp
We've always enjoyed their food and service. However, this time we could not eat on the patio/deck on a nice day because they had a private party taking up their patio. It is not the first time this has happened to us. I'm sure the party people are having a grand time. However, these frequent parties are a disturbance and disappointment to us boring regular people's outdoor dining experience/expectations. We ended up getting takeout. I mean, if this restaurant loves parties so much, they could consider opening a catering branch to specifically cater for parties........

Yelp
Great quality Italian food. Love the salads and pizza! If you're a fan of Focaccia bread, must try the Monna Clara square pizza!

Yelp
Some of the best pizza I've ever had. The Bianco bruschetta with balsamic reduction was so yummy. The crust was buttery and it's rare to find such a great combination where I love the crust and the pizza. The Blanca White was delicious. Fantastic white pizza with plenty of oregano on it. The garlic knots could use more butter but that's a personal preference. I like them doing dripping with oil and these were about half way. Service was excellent. He had that water ready for me before I looked up.

Yelp
Overall, my experience with fast bake pizza has been negative. I tend to end up with a pizza that isn't evenly cooked and toppings close to ash. I'm not going to say I have no complaints with Metro, but I ate my entire 12" pizza and it was delicious. So, the crust was delicious, the edges were crispy, but nice so. However the crust in the center of the pie was underdone. Now, I'm not a fan of uncooked mushrooms on pizzas, I don't think it's effective. So, you could sautee some mushrooms and use them to make a delicious pie. But, for a restaurant as busy as this. It would be a lot of sauteeing every day. So, they use canned mushrooms. I don't hate a canned mushroom so I didn't knock them for that. Nice staff, used take-out. I'll definitely go back.

Yelp
We live 5 minutes from here and used to go here frequently. But now the pizzas have shrunk and they are skimping on the sauce and toppings. It is not worth the price for this pizza anymore. Too bad!
google avatar

Carol L.

Yelp
So if you get to this restaurant at 9:40 PM, 20 minutes before they close they may or may not serve you. If they choose to serve you, it will be a very limited menu of basically just a cheese pizza or a pepperoni pizza. No I'm not talking about staying there and eating. I'm talking about a to go order. I found the atmosphere at 9:40 very unfriendly. I think if you are going to stop serving people at 9:30 PM, you should indicate that on your menu or website.

Yelp
We stopped here for lunch after a long morning walking around a museum near by! We ordered three pizzas: Rockford park, wawaset park and a margarita pizza. Pizza took a bit to come out but they came out looking and smelling amazing! My friend enjoyed her Rockford park pizza and ate every last bite of it. We enjoyed the other two pizzas as well. The margarita pizza was one of the best ones we have had in awhile fresh ingredients and very tasty pizza! We ll have to come back and try some other pizzas one day!

Yelp
Review: La Pizzeria Metro - Wilmington, DE Garlic Knots: 7.6/10 I'm really hungry, so my rating might be a bit skewed, but these garlic knots are impressively fluffy! I love the skillet presentation--it adds a nice touch. They're a bit greasy, but have a good crunch. I wish they were more garlicky, though. The sauce is delicious but could use a bit more. Overall, I enjoyed the doughiness! Cast Iron Chicken Wings: 6.4/10 The chicken wings have a nice aftertaste with a bit of spice from the hot honey. They're sweet with an okay crisp. I wish the wings were larger and meatier, and that there were more onions. Unfortunately, the chicken tends to stick to the skillet. Bianco Bruschetta Pizza: 6.1/10 This pizza gives off a nice wood-fired vibe. It's usually made on a square dough but they ran out. It feels like they're skimping on the tomato and onion especially for $17. The crust is great, and the tomatoes are fresh and fun. A bit more balsamic would have been appreciated. The cheese is wonderful, but the pizza wasn't cut with love. I wish there was more of everything!

Yelp
This is what out impression was of this place, as of 2 years ago: Aesthetic: 4 stars. Open & light, in an old spanish-themed, converted chemical building that's shared with Wilmington Brew Works & Sleeping Bird Coffee next door. Pizza: 3ish stars While they use quality ingredients (with nice flavor combinations), their nicely flavored crust, much like other local "gourmet" pizza places, is so damn chewy that it's almost inedible. It's also too thin and floppy, which causes the toppings to fall off. Plus, they're very over priced. But, proportionately, their stromboli's were better, if too small. Staff: 2 stars. Hit & miss. During the busy weekend, don't expect super nice patient staff, here. We actually think their sister pizza company, " Cafe Riveria" in Concord Mall, is better bang for your buck.

Yelp
Always the best pizza in Wilmington. The service is exemplary too. We have never had less than a great time at LA Pizzeria Metro.

Yelp
I was at Wilmington Brew Works next to Metro for a drag bingo event. It's very convenient to have this reaturant right next door of a cool brewery! I called ahead and ordered a few things from the menu I've never had. Typically I am all about their pizzas which are delicious. The caprese sandwhich was messy but very yummy! The wood fire bread was the best part! The Caesar salad was a bit different being mostly arugula but it was served with egg, homemade dressing, and a few toastinis. Also delicious stuff from Metro where it's pizza or not!

Yelp
Food was good I enjoyed the burger little pricey for having no fries to be honest I think this spot is strictly a pizza place cause they do pizza really well are waiter was fine when it came to service

Joe S.

Yelp
I went to this place for dinner last night on a date, after we sat down it took about 10 mins for a server to ask what we wanted to drink/order. We ordered the garlic knots and two 12" pizzas, they came out pretty quickly but it was the best garlic knots and pizza I've had. After me and this chick ate the food, the server gave us free gelato with two spoons to share. It was a great lob. She said the gelato was on her because it took 10 mins to take our order. Overall great experience.

Yelp
This is one of our favorite pizzerias in the area. It's casual and family friendly. The pizza is obviously their highlight with a wide selection of brick oven pizzas made with the freshest ingredients. Last time we got the eggplant parmesan, the mac and cheese, and the meatballs. The meatballs and eggplant parmesan were out of this world. Sauce was flavorful and the meatballs perfectly seasoned. Although the mac and cheese was also good, it was way too greasy for our taste - there was a pool of oil and grease below the pasta. The service is always friendly and attentive. We ordered a couple of drinks and our glasses were never empty. However, we noticed that two of the ceramic plates and one of the plastic cups was noticeably broken. They should pay attention to these and throw them away as presentation makes part of the service. There is always parking on their lot. It's right next to Wilmington Brew Works so you can take to go and eat there instead, but make sure to call in advance as it takes almost an hour for pizza on Friday and Saturday night.

Yelp
I think this place is known for its pizza, which is amazing, however the rest of the menu is a hit as well.... May be even better than the pizza! The drinks are great too. The GM, Dan? Is super friendly and accommodating. Was having some difficulties with my card and he was super helpful. Always a very clean establishment as well. I am definitely a regular!

Yelp
I ordered the cast iron wings with onions and honey. A few of my wings had dark bones...not fresh. My pizza was over cooked with pretty dark edges. We sat outside while we ate. Completed the financial transaction but the waitress never came back to get the signed receipt, so had to take it inside and couldn't find her so I passed it to another waitress. No one was outside so I didn't want to just leave it on the table. Too many entry and exit ways.

Yelp
The pizza here is so good and provides a variety to fit everyone's tastes. I went here with coworkers and I was quite happy.

Jen C.

Yelp
There is a wait because it's so good. Don't be discouraged just plan accordingly Love it all!!!!!!!!

Yelp
The weather was lovely so we chose to sit outside. There are no gluten free pizza crust choices so we went with a salad and nachos. The salad was a generous portion and came with the dressing on the side so one could dress their salad as much or little as they like. The nachos arrived in a really hot cast iron pan which was amazing because the nachos and cheese stayed nice and hot throughout the entire time we ate them. We loved this!! Since our dining experience was great so far we decided to try some dessert and went with the affogato and a tiramisu. The tiramisu is the traditional style. I couldn't taste any coffee or liquor but it was lovely. It was the first time we've tried an affogato and my dining partner enjoyed it so much she is now a fan! I'm sure we will be trying affogato everywhere it's offered and it will be compared to the one here. Jake was our server and he was terrific. There was also a very nice young man who turned on the heater for us when we requested it as it got a little cold outside while we were eating. All-in-all we had a fabulous pizza restaurant experience here and will definitely be back!
google avatar

Courtney P.

Yelp
Went here for pizza on a Tuesday night. They had buy one get one pizza half off. I got the pesto pizza with sausage. It was delicious and flavorful!! I also got the tiramisu for dessert. It was so yummy!! Great local spot!

Yelp
Last time we are going to try to eat at this place 5:15pm on a Friday and they were out of square pizza again! Go elsewhere folks!

Yelp
I Want to start by saying we really love this place, but this why I'm Giving it only 4 stars (then I'll go i to the good stuff), I called in a togo order and the kid on the phone taking the order was terrible, it was a painful experience, we thought forsure the order would be wrong,, that being side it was correct. Besides that my main complaint was with my salad "The Mozz" should of been called "The Hot House Tomato" because that all it really was, a few slices of cucumber, a handful of green olives (weird) and about 6 crappy tasting, hot house tomatoes and then a ball of flavorless Mozzarella the side of a peach pit for $12 this salad was very disappointing, no salt or pepper, no basil and hardly any cheese, even with the balsamic and EVOO and after having the counter boy add fresh shaved parm it still lacking in any flavor. Why we love this place its the Nonna Square pizza and the Garlic Knots! BOTH 5 STARS The GARLIC KNOTS were to die for hands down the best part of the meal! The texture of the dough was light and airy on the Inside and crispy on the outside so delicious I could of ate 2 orders! The pizzas was tasty as well, good sauce and cheese and nice pepperoni and thin crust all very good. Although we had our heart set on the square Nonna and were so disappointed to hear its very limited due to the fact it needs 3 days to prep (I totally understand and won't hold that against them) we were happy with the round but prefer the square kjust personally, there is nothing wrong with the round at all it is very good but i would say the garlic knots were definitely our favorite part of the meal and I would not order the "Mozz" salad again!

Yelp
We love Pizzeria Metro - an amazing addition to the wonderful oasis in Wilmington. WBW is a place we love a lot, and there is nothing better than quickly and easily ordering from Metro and being able to enjoy the delicious food and appetizers with the great beer. My family and I were going to take the kids out with friends for Halloween, and we stopped at Metro beforehand to get dinner for everyone - delicious, service was great, everyone loved it and multiple people were blown away and super excited about going themselves. This place rules.
google avatar

P E.

Yelp
I recently stopped here for the first time to dine in. Arrived for a late lunch and sat in the bar area. Service was a little spotty but the pizza and vegetarian calzone were worth the small delays. Crispy and flavorful. My dining partner and I also shared a Caesar salad. This came with the dressing on the side to toss at the table. This was flavorless and even though we okayed the anchovies, I did not see or taste any. I would pass on this next time.
google avatar

Jose H.

Yelp
I typically love La Pizzeria Metro's pizzas. Especially their square pies. However today, I ordered our usual square pies and something was off. Taste and flavors are completely off. I also noticed that the dough is much thinner? "shrinkflation?"

Lauren H.

Yelp
Been here several times and the food never disappoints. The smell of pizza hits you right when you walk through the doors! I've been able to order a Stromboli without cheese (due to dietary restrictions) with no issues! Great service, highly recommend!

Vivian C.

Yelp
i couldn't help it, i got another pie. you'll regret not eating here after you read this. please, PLEASE go here. Best thing i've ever founded in my life. Tomorrow, I will be there! Okay i think im done but not with this place :o i swear im not biased, im literally a girl from south jersey. im just a munch and this restaurant has me in a chokehold.

Yelp
So, our first time here got us HOOKED!!! Our server was so sweet and polite, we were explained the menu and promptly brought our drinks. My husband and I split the gnocchi special app which was amazinggggg and good portion. I wish no one was there so I could drink straight from the bowl! We decided to split one of the neighborhood pizzas, we got the "Brown town". First bite, I was blown away! This pizza had Pork Belly, balsamic onions, grape tomatoes, Pineapple (Yes, PINEAPPLE 100% belongs on pizza), Provo-Nello, arugula, & Mike's Hot Honey. This combo was almost magical. I had to post on IG how beautiful this pizza was. I loved that it was very open, and I could see the brick oven fire. Def check out the specials board when you come in. Since our first time here we've been back 3 other times; our goal is to try every Neighborhood pizza. So far not 1 has disappointed me. This place is truly a hidden gem, and I am so thankful I stumbled on it. We have already sent 2 friends here on dates! Hands down THE BEST PIZZA I have EVER had!!! Cannot wait to come back!!!

Yelp
Went in for a quick slice and it was really good! Better than expected. My wife had a bite and we had to turn around for more. Quick service

Yelp
We have always had excellent food. The pizzas are delicious and creative. The salads have the freshest ingredients and the dressing is homemade and delicious. Staff is friendly and very accommodating. An excellent place!

Yelp
I am updating my review as I gave it another try when a family member bought a house that is close by. I ordered a pizza and so did the other person in my party and they were both excellent. I also ordered a margarita that they had on their drink menu and it was very, very good. We were greeted by a friendly staff member and were very pleased with the service. Again, go for the pizza, it is some of the best around.

Jackie K.

Yelp
Unbelievable!!!! The pizza is some of the best we've ever had!! Sauce is delicious. Dough is nice and thin. Actual homemade roasted red peppers - nice touch. Tons of toppings. The eggplant appetizer was a huge portion and delicious. Can't wait to work our way through the menu!! Large fun place with a TV. Has outside seating also.

Yelp
Take out pizza - margherita. Best I've had in DE. The reviews aren't wrong. Meatballs also very good.

Amy K.

Yelp
This hands down is my favorite restaurant. Everything on the menu is excellent. The drinks are tasty and unique. And the s'mores pizza is an excellent dessert to share.

Mick G.

Yelp
Food is good but pricey. Typical pizzeria fare at high end prices. Bar prices high as well I.e. 7 dollar Peroni drafts. Crowded but they do a good job managing it. Hostess is great. Service is good with the exception of the red headed female bartender, who is consistently and demonstrably rude. Fills your draft beer 7/8, serves it with her thumb in the glass, slams it on the table so more spills, and walks away in the middle of you speaking.
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Delicious simple quick reasonable lovely. Kind server. Helpful staff. Great chill ambiance. Fun. Pizza and calzone great! Garlic knots inconsistent one batch perfect next sent out burnt. Wish we. OHLE come back great little place!

Yelp
Stopped in with the family on a Saturday night-they we're packed but it wasn't long before a table opened up. We went there for the pizza as we've heard great things about it, but upon being seated we were told that it would be an hour wait We ordered some apps and small plates, including wings and meat balls, but also ordered a pizza to go. The wings were different, but good. The meatballs were good, but maybe too much of a taste of fennel seed. Still good, though! As we were getting towards the bottom of our pint glasses our pizza showed up-holy moly was it good! If I had known how good I would've ordered two! I'd rate it 8.3 out of 10, which is very high on my scale. Will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Ellen C.

Yelp
A hidden gem! The menu has so many delectable options, I know I'll be back to try something new. This order I went with the classic Margherita pizza. The fresh ingredients and oven roasted flavors blended together well. The staff was friendly and prompt. They have indoor and outdoor seating, which I'll try on my next visit as well. It's a nice vibe for dinner with friends or a date. There's a bar on the premises, but it's right next to Wilmington Brew Works so you have drinking options.

Yelp
The first time I dined at La Pizzeria Metro I had a much better experience. After reading about the cast iron wings on Yelp, I ordered them. They were good, but they were not worth the hype in my opinion. I got a white pizza special that was very good. My issues with La Pizzeria Metro mainly stem from my most recent dining experience. The waiter made rude remarks about the ages of the people in my party and tried to take the beer menu away, despite everyone being 21+. I ordered the mac and cheese, and it was nothing short of nasty. I have never in my life seen so much grease. I drained it all into a separate plate and eliminated my appetite in the process. The food took ridiculously long to come out despite being literally the only people dining there. Despite my dismal dining experience, I would say that it has a nice atmosphere and brewery that is especially enjoyable in the summer.
google avatar

Priscilla Y.

Yelp
I didn't have the pizza here, though they did look pretty good. Instead, we got the cast iron wings, which I highly recommend! The wings were so tasty and delicious. They were baked with caramelized onions. Best wings I've had in a while! This restaurant is right next to the Wilmington Brew Works. Plenty of parking.

Yelp
This place is around the corner from my apartment so I had to check it out. I was pleased with my first visit. As you step inside there are adequate tables, the decor is casual and contemporary, and I was greeted right away. They have a bar that seats about 10, to the right of the door. I saw about 10 tables to give you an idea of the size. I went to the left of the main entrance where the exhibition kitchen is. They had a guy on center stage prepping all of the pizza's by himself. He was a rockstar! A nice lady helped me pick the pizza of the day. It was well worth the 30 minutes I was quoted before my pizza was ready. Ordinarily that is very long but understanding the one guy and the limited oven space it's okay. In order to combat that regular long wait time, the lady that took my order suggested I call ahead. Great info! Wow! The taste of this hand-crafted pizza was AMAZING! I appreciate the details of the fresh ingredients and perfect crust. I had the pizza of the day and it changes every day. Although it is a little pricey for these unique gourmet pizza's, I think it's totally worth it. I can't wait to go back. #HastyFoodiePic

Yelp
I'm updating my review from a 4 star to a 5 star review. Our last takeout order was perfectly executed as well as delicious. We loved the meatballs and the pizzas were excellent. Got a Bianca with pepperoni, Mushroom and Carmelized Onion, South Philly Stromboli and the Wilmington Sandwich with prosciutto, roasted red peppers... All delicious !!! Can't wait to get this for my staff on Tuesday for lunch !!
