OC’s 18 Best Bakeries for Bread, Pastries, and More | Eater LA

"Since 1995, La Poblana Bakery has been a popular OC spot for authentic tamales filled with pork, pollo, queso, beef, pineapple, strawberry, and seasonal elote. While the menudo is also popular at the bakery, most people order the tamales along with an assortment of pan dulce. The chocolate conchas and the CD-sized rainbow sprinkle galleta are kid-friendly favorites." - Jenn Tanaka

Google
I just bought a large Rosca to celebrate El Dia de Los Reyes on January 6... It was the best one I have tried in years! All my Co-workers found it particularly delicious. Very very good Mexican bread. Nice place. Nice people. I am definitely going back and trying other breads and food.

Jose Matienzo

Google
First time trying their food Best tamales ever!! I used to go to Carambas in Pico for many years but not good anymore. Anyway I love this tamales champurrado and bolillo will be buying here 4 ever.

Charles Muckle

Google
You need to know Pan Dulce before you go here. Otherwise bring a friend who does know Pan Dulce. :-) It is good I go often. The cakes look amazing! 🤤

Johnny Yu

Google
Excellent Flan, bakery reasonably priced

Dulce Ceron

Google
Tamales were NOT good! They were expensive and for nothing. They were sour and had no flavor. Don't recommend it. Bread is hard as a rock.

April M.

Google
They have good champurado, tamales and sweet bread. Reasonable cakes. There's nowhere to dine in except 2 tables outside. It's more of a bakery, they serve some food items.

J Sanchez

Google
The bread is always great! Good prices. Tamales are good most of the time. Sometimes you will get some tamales that are not as moist. But overall, it is good!

Michael Sedlar

Google
Great food and reasonable prices. We bought flan and tamales Excellent taste on both! Staff was helpful and friendly.

Yelp
The service at this place has gotten really bad... They are rude and look at us as if we are going to rob the place... Also the champurrado hear is the worst I have ever had.. It's sad.... Where's ICE?!

Yelp
A panaderia where you can get pan dulce, cakes and tamales among other things. The place is more of a take out type place where you come in and order, get your goods and leave. Pretty straightforward and efficient. Feels like a mom and pop type place in terms of vibe. It's also located in the same strip mall as the Northgate market. I came in here to order some tamales to go. I got two of each: chicken, pork, and cheese and jalapeño. I'm not sure if it's super common, but I feel like a lot of panaderias that I've been to have tamales available. They didn't have salsa here so I just went across the street to the market and grab some there to bring back to the office. I'm not sure if it was just because they were freshly steamed but I thought these tasted delicious. I thought the masa was a little lighter and fluffier than I've had at other places. Definitely enjoyed the texture. In one sitting or a particular meal, I feel like I could eat two comfortably. As of 9/23 the tamales were $2.75 each.

Yelp
Nice little bakery offering my favorite, Mexican sweet bread (pan dulce). Prices are just right, choices and variety of breads are plentiful and the taste of every item I have ever purchased here is so good and fresh. Employees are very nice and appreciative of every customer entering their bakery. I am definitely a fan of this bakery

Yelp
Seriously just think twice before coming here the tamal was really bad and the masa had a funky smell to it. The chicken was stale and to top it off overpriced. I came here because i seen they sell tamales and wanted to give it a try but first and last time for me. Even north gate tamales are 10x better than this.! The bolillo was hard af and cold af. I swear think twice before coming I'm not even exaggerating.

Yelp
Mexican sweet bread oh so yummy yummy a hidden secret of mine and coffee a spot I almost don't want to write a review because I want to keep it a secret but they deserve a 5 star to share with others

Nicole C.

Yelp
My family ordered tamales and pozole for Christmas dinner and we all became violently. Many of us are still sick and contemplating going to urgent care. What was suppose to be a nice Christmas was ruined. I don't know if the food is properly stored or if it was spoiled but we are all extremely sick and it has ruined our holiday. I submitted a health inspection form with the city because places like this should not be serving food to the public.

Yelp
Wnt in to see what they had. In the back Left side against a wall 10 feet from a table was the case of pan dulcet they had. I walked up to see what they had. Was greeted then told to get back behind the table. I asked the woman if I could take a look si ce you can't see that far back. She said no! Without an explanation or apology! I turned and walked out. Horrible set up and wore customer service!!!

Yelp
Birthday cake was a hit at the party. Cake design was exactly how asked it to be! Friendly staff. Very pleased!

Yelp
My new cake place in LP. I don't speak much spanish but the little cute ol' lady who took my order understood my spanglish enough to get my order correct. After we tried a cake fm here at a party the previous week we ordered a 10 inch cookies'n'cream w/ chocolate bread. Let me tell you, Baskin Robbins is good, but this place is equally as yummy, I think better especially for the price. Per my daughters request we added the Smurfs decorations and the bill came out to about $40ish. I have yet to try their pan or tamales but I will def be back to order my future cakes from here.
google avatar

Yelp
Champurado drink is very good, everything else is ok for emergency purchase or just go to Northgate
google avatar

Angie L.

Yelp
Ladies are very nice and friendly very good deals always recommend but had to review lately the pan has flies in the doors where the pan is at that's a big no no so I can't buy my bread here until I see a change and will continue for all the other deals here

Yelp
Horrible bakery... Seriously I think anyone who is writing a good review must be related to these useless people. First off I came in to order a gender reveal cake and was told it wasn't a problem. I made it clear that we needed pink on the inside so our family would be surprised were having a girl. They took the order and made the notes cleAr on the order form. To our surprise when we cut into the cake it was all white!!!! When we went to ask what happened the bakery said "he didn't know how to do it" I'm no genius or anything but I can't believe putting food coloring is too difficult. Instead I call the owner Josephina who said they should have called to tell me they couldn't do it( no shit) instead they made it and made us look stupid in front of our family. To make it worse she promised a credit towards a new cake then when I called two weeks later she changed her mind and said I can have it 50% off! Seriously these ppl are useless. I told her Nevermind. I don't need her shitty nasty cakes and she is obviously very desperate for money. And then to top it all off the filling on the inside tasted old and gross! And the cake was crooked lol Seriously beware of this bakery, they are cheap and hard up for money and their cakes look like crap. They deserve 0 stars and they ruined a very exciting moment for my husband and I

Yelp
Came here to try their tamales and bread. I would say this place is average. Although the bread was warm, it lacked a little flavor. Not sure if this would be my place of choice for bread, but it will do in a pinch. The tamales, again, lacked flavor. I would rather have smaller tamales with more flavor than big tamales with little flavor. Not sure if I would get tamales here again.

daisy g.

Yelp
Their cakes are delicious!! I ordered a Mexican theme cake for my moms birthday and they didn't disappoint. This was white cake with fresh strawberries inside. Delicious!!!! I have also bought a tres leches cake from them and hands down the best tres leches cake I have ever had.

Victoria H.

Yelp
I have seen this place a few times when I come to this shopping center. Finally decided to buy the rajas tamales to try. OMG I am so glad I only bought two. They are super dried. It seems the tamales were old and have been reheated a few times. Won't come back anymore!!
google avatar

Krystel S.

Yelp
We recently went there again to get my daughter's birthday cake and it was beautiful, plus for the first time there was no left overs! Everyone loved it! I ordered the tres leches with double fresh strawberries with whipped cream frosting
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
They have the best cafe de olla! If you go in the morning the smell of freshly baked bread is amazing! Definitely recommend this bakery if you want some good pan dulce.
google avatar

Victor B.

Yelp
I don't even want to post a 5 Star review because it might get packed :) All kidding aside this place hands down has the best mexican bread ive ever had. The conchas are the best. Definitely making this my morning pan place! The lady who helped us is very nice.

Paulette S.

Yelp
I came here because I was told they had good sweet bread and bolillo. I did not agree but maybe because it was towards the end of day. The bolillo was hard as a rock so I had to pop it into the mw w/ a cup of water inside to make it manageable. The sweet bread was ok. Wasn't really a fan. It was just two young girls checking out that night. Good service. 3 stars bc they were ok but the foods weren't. The search for a good bakery continues.

Yelp
If I could give negative stars I would. I used to love this place, but this Christmas we ordered tamales from them and they ripped us off. They didn't give us our full order even though we had already paid for it. We ordered 12 cheese tamales, 9 pork tamales, 6 chicken tamales, and 3 sweet corn tamales, but when we opened our order at home there were 6 cheese tamales, 9 pork tamales, 6 chicken tamales and 3 dulce tamales. They only gave us half of our cheese tamale order, and they switched the sweet corn tamale order for the sweet ones with pineapple. I wouldn't be complaining, if they had given us our money back for the tamales we paid for but didn't receive, but my husband has gone 3 different times and called multiple times and they always say the owner isn't there and that they can't do anything unless the owner is there. They just keep on giving him the run around and it's already been a month. Worst customer service. My husband even had pictures of the order that was given to us and has shown them, but they won't give him our money back. Don't order tamales from there for Christmas or they may end up ripping you off.

Yelp
My mom and I stopped by to get groceries at Northgate Market and left craving Tres Leche cake. On our way out we saw this bakery and decided to stop by and get a slice. I stayed in the car while my mom went in, bought the cake and came back. We left and decided to go, and wait until we got home to eat it. Big mistake. We should have had a bite before leaving. When we took a bite of the cake, it tasted sour. The milk was already going bad. It was a 15 minute drive home in air conditioning. We've never had this issue when buying cake from Northgate. After the first bite, it's obvious the cake wasn't fresh at all. It may actually be several days old. Lesson learned. From now we'll be sure to buy our Tres Leches from Northgate, where we've never had this problem. If you want sour Tres Leches cake, this place is perfect for you, otherwise, avoid coming here.

Lilia G.

Yelp
Doña Carmen and the owner of the bakery Señor Jose are very nice people. The bread is good when you get it as soon as they finish baking it. The place itself reminds me of a bakery in Mexico. It takes you home the minute you walk in.
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
I pre-ordered a tres leches cake for an upcoming party from this bakery because I had ordered from them years before. The day I placed the order, I purchased a slice of their tres leches cake to take home. That was a mistake. The cake had a horrible sour taste and left you an even worse after-taste. The cake tasted old. I wish I had read the comments on Yelp before ordering a cake. Lost a 25% deposit. But definitely better than serving my guests one of the worse tres leches cake I ever tasted.
google avatar

Gabriel R.

Yelp
*the worst tamales I've ever had I took one bite and didn't want it so she charged me for 3 tamales and one bread **SHE CHARGED MY CARD EVEN THOUGH I DIDNT TAKE THE TAMALES !!!!!!!! ** I left empty handed and hungry and paid for nothing. the breads were hard and tamales were very dry. esta tienda no trabajan bien
google avatar

Manuel D.

Yelp
Went there to get some bread one time & for Thanksgiving I ordered some Tamales. I loved both the bread & tamales they were amazing ! They were so kind to me . I would definitely go back & get some tamales & I would recommend this place to anybody around that area

Jennifer R.

Yelp
This has been the spot for tres leches cake for any occasion in my family for many years! I must say, they never disappoint! They charge $35 for a round 10" $5 extra for design you bring from home and $5 extra if you want fresh fruit as your filler (totally worth it btw).

Yelp
I called 4 days ago and was told they open at 4am and will have tortas ready. So I woke up at 3am to give myself time to drive there before work. Well, they don't have tortas available until prob 445am. Waste of time! So today, I woke up earlier than usual to give it another try. I called in an order at 5am only to be told, "We don't have any ham and lettuce today. Maybe we'll have torta after 6am" by a lady. And here I was bragging to my coworkers that I had a taste of their torta and enjoyed it. I was planning to treat all my coworkers today and make this my regular go to place. What a waste of my time. Definitely would not recommend this place.

Yelp
Decent Panaderias (Spanish Bakeries) are few and far between. If you are looking for a good panaderia - visit la Poblana Bakery. The pan dulce/sweet bread is really good and the place is clean. Follow this order and you will be fine: 1) pick up a plastic tray to place the bread, 2) pick up a pair of tongs and the rest is up to you. I like coming here on saturday morning, ordering a large Champurrado (warm and very thick mexican drink), and having a fresh baked bread. The Champurrado is delicious and not too sweet. I love both the selection of bread and cost per piece. I recommend the cuernitos, bolillos and conchas. Do not mind all the people people sitting outside, reading their paper and having their morning coffee.
google avatar

Angela V.

Yelp
One of my go to panaderias where I know I will always find fresh bolillos and pan dulce. I am always here early in the morning and everything is fresh out of the oven and warm. All their pan dulce is delicious, their tamales are great, my favorite are the cheese tamales and they have delicious champurrado, coffee, and cafe de la Olla that will pair perfectly with your pan dulce or tamales. The service is great and even at 5:00 in the morning your are greeted with a friendly smile, especially the older lady that work the counter, she is exceptionally nice.
google avatar

Carolyn B.

Yelp
Actually, they are a bakery too. They provide the once a week Mexican pan dulce that Queen of the Valley has in the cafeteria. The pan dulce goes fast when it arrives there. The elotes and the ones that are similar to elotes (but curved) are popular. I've gone there a few times to buy sweet bread too. The only bad thing is that they charge you extra for a box if you want your bread not to be mushed up in a paper bag. The box is sturdy and costs $1.00 extra. That is pretty weird, since most bakeries/donut shops will box up stuff for free. Other than that, it doesn't compare to El Gallo, my utmost favorite, in East LA, but it will do for your pan dulce craving.

Yelp
Ordered a full sheet cake with hhipped cream frosting, different shades of purple flowers, with gold lettering 60 Sexy & Sassy", chocolate with fresh strawberries for 70-80 ppl for $100 for my mom's 60th party. Everyone loved the cake and thought it was very pretty. Ordering and picking up was so easy!

Jessy G.

Yelp
They have the best fresh pan dulce. Try their cafe de olla which is delicious as well. But the favorita part is the great customer service Ive received from the staff there (specially the cute girls there). They are great always willing to help you. They not only sell bread which makes it the spot to go!!!!!!

Fabian L.

Yelp
The pan is great, fresh and warm if you're early but man how rude is the lady there. 6am an I asked if she can put my 2dz order in a box rather than a bag and she got mad. Eh whatever

Maria H.

Yelp
Champurado at this place is the best they have it all day even when they're about to close girls are so sweet and will make sure you leave with your warm champurado. Hot bolios to go with it couldn't be any better love their fresh bread and drinks and if you can ever get your hands on the corn bread I highly suggest it!!! Todo en este lugar esta muy rico con buen servicio

Yelp
I order a cake, chocoflan to be exact 10 days before my event and when i got, it it was nasty and old the bread was hard. They problably gave me an old cake they in store. I returned the next day and told them and they said the cake was new and that they made it the same day, which is a lie. No body ate the cake at the party and all the people was complaining of how nasty and old the cake was never in my life coming here again!
google avatar

Yelp
This little gem of the valley is awesome. I come in several times a week for the coffee "cafe de olla" (sweet coffee with cinnamon) style along with their massive sweet bread " pan dulce". I always enjoy the always fresh and warm extra large rolls "birote" which I take home and use for breakfast and lunch. I'm not sure how things were in the past but I do know that this place has definitely turned around for the better. The long lines for the pastries and delicious food cannot lie. Don't take my word for it, try it for yourself.

Cedric M.

Yelp
I came and Kelly helped me. I was very pleased with her customer service. I bought a few pastries and they were all fresh and tasted amazing. I plan on getting birth day cakes etc. I definitely recommend this bakery.
google avatar

nicole v.

Yelp
Everytime i go into this bakery at 6:00AM NOTHING is fresh! Bread is hard, Small selections. I won't be going back, I'll continue to go to Northgate an get my bread where its warm, soft, and fresh! even at 8:30am its fresh at northgate.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Horrible service.. Very rude, and there was several hairs in my tamales and they tried to argue with me about it when I returned them instead of refunding me my money.. Filthy ass place
google avatar

Brenda B.

Yelp
I order a cake for my sister in law baby shower I explain to the lady that place my order that I wasn't going to be able to pick up my cake till 8-8:30pm, she was okay with it she said as longest you are here before 9pm because that's their closing time. So Saturday comes I arrive at exactly 8:25pm lights are off and it's close, I didn't get a call from them to at least let me know that they where closing early nor and apology, the only excuse they gave me the next day was that they had an emergency and close early no apology at all, I ask for a refund and the lady I spoke to said she was going to speak to her manager and call back. I get a call back at 10pm just to say come pick up your refund the next day. Who the hell calls at that time of night from a bakery on a Sunday night these people have no respect nor manners never again will I buy anything from that poc bakery nor recommend to anyone.
google avatar

Aimee L.

Yelp
Great tamales, good service, awesome bolillos. They have a little bit of everything here, prices are pretty reasonable.

Sammuel A.

Yelp
I've been coming here for many years and ever since the new ownership the quality has decreased. Unfortunately. My experience with the owner today was awful. I had to returned a wrong order and he didn't do anything to make up for it. After wasting my time to go back to the bakery to return my order. They lost a long time client forever.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
Every year we buy tamales from this place.... they have always been very good plenty of meat.... just the right amount of masa... I don't know what happened this year... almost no meat and all masa. Still good tasting but no meat. I will let the owner know. I Would Definitely Look For Another Place For tamales. Employees are very nice. And helpful.

Connie L.

Yelp
I ordered my sons birthday cake from here tres leches with fresh strawberries and it was DELICIOUS! There was nothing left over my family loved it. Decently priced, girl that took my order was very nice. That night I also bought a dozen tamales as well best tamales I've had in a while. I know where I will be ordering my tamales for xmas now! Definitely give this place a try I reccomend it.

Mary L.

Yelp
The bread, jellos and bollios rellenos are decent. But the tamales are nasty!!! They are almost $2 a piece and are not good. They have more masa than meet and are tiny. I really expected something better because the restaurant is good but the bakery isn't and as I left I saw they have a B!!
