California burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Located in the Gaslamp, this spot stands out more for long, frequent happy hours and one of San Diego’s larger small-batch tequila and mezcal selections than for its California burrito. At about $15, the burrito is almost twice the price of others on the list yet not nearly as meaty; it arrives with guacamole (no need to ask) and is defined more by the creaminess of guacamole and sour cream than by robust carne asada. The tortilla’s exterior is significantly toasted on a flat top, giving nicely crisped sides, but the overall value for the price is lacking." - Phaedra Cook

Google
Saw an insane amount of reviews here plus walking by, this place is always busy. Also huge portions here as well! We started off ordering a large Cantina Chopped salad which probably should have been a small or medium. This had romaine lettuce, cabbage, corn, cucumber, tomato, carrot, panela & cotija cheese, cilantro lime dressing, chipotle crema, tortilla strips, avocado, serrano-lime vinaigrette. Then I ordered the Viva Mexico Tacos Especial which is 3 Tacos served with Refried Beans, rice, rajas con crema, cotija cheese and limes. As for the Tacos it came with Arrachera steak, melted jack cheese, grilled onion and poblano, avocado, panela cheese, crema. The Panela cheese was an absolute game changer. My partner got the Surf and Turf Burrito (Arranchera steak, shrimp, ranchero sauce, grilled onion and poblano, jack cheese, guacamole, chipotle crema). The food was amazing, I see why there is such good reviews for this restaurant. We also had room for dessert so we got the Churros which were stacked log cabin style and it came with some ice cream and dulce de leche. Amazing dessert. Overall service was insanely good too, always someone to refill water, food came out quick, any requests were taken fast! Definitely recommend!

Was in town for the weekend with a friend decided to get some dinner found this place on google had a high rating. The wait time was about 30mins. It was a Saturday night. I ordered the bowl of posole , was delicious. The chips and salsa were also good. The drinks were very yummy. Our waiter was very nice and friendly and let me tell you the playlist was 10/10. Enjoyed the atmostphere and our visit. Satisfied customer.

While working in San Diego a friend took me to this place, as he said anytime he’s out in San Diego his family loves this place. WOW , I can see why. The atmosphere was amazing specially during the holidays. Love the wallpaper art with black and white celebrity portraits (and some celebrity mugshots). The food on different level. The elegant Mexican dishes presentation was not only pleasing to the eyes, but satisfying to my pallet. I’m definitely coming back.

We just landed in San Diego and we were hungry. So we look for a place closer to the hotel and we saw the reviews for this place and decided to try it out. Locked in the hostess was very friendly sat us down. The waiter came up with water, which was perfect cause we were dying of thirst at that point and he told us that we had just walked into the happy hour. All the drinks, no matter what was on the menu or half off which I ordered a Mezcal and pineapple concoction Amazing I had two of them. Then we ordered some potato flutes and shared that together with a side of the hottest sauce I have ever had. And I like hot and this hit me hard, but love every single deposit. My husband ordered the sampler tacos, the pork, the shrimp, and the chicken and he enjoyed all three of them, but like the pork the most. I ordered the chopped salad with the chicken because I’ve had a Serrano vinaigrette, which was mouthwatering. Definitely definitely try this place out. The atmosphere was chill, relaxing. The car is awesome.

We went here seeing all the reviews and I can say this is hands down very good restaurant. Loved the food and Drinks. Our Server was amazing fast and Happy to help us decide from the menu. Looking forward to coming back when we are back in San Diego.

Google
We were there around 3 pm on Sunday and they still had people waiting to get in . Luckily we got a seat right away since it was just two of us. The service was friendly and attentive snd the vibe was fun. We got ceviche and tacos which were all very delicious. The ingredients were super fresh and my 10 years old daughter loved ceviche . Definitely recommend if you want to try good tacos in San Diego !

Google
La Puerta has been around for at least 16-17 years one of the few establishments to last in downtown. Really good happy hour with the best Cadillac margaritas in town no doubt. Food is delicious I go with the carne asada fries. Great atmosphere check it out you will not be disappointed.

Google
One of the best Mexican restaurants, and also very vegetarian-friendly! I highly recommend this place — the food, ambiance, and overall experience were excellent. What made it even better was our server, Sydney, who went above and beyond to ensure that all the dishes on our table were vegetarian. Her attention to detail and warm service really stood out. A great spot for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike!

Yelp
Usually here every couple of nights and they love me like family. Easily the most consistent place in terms of food and drinks in Downtown SD.

Yelp
Amazing rice and beans and the chicken tacos I had were seasoned super well. Our server was very attentive and efficient. The restaurant has a really cool vibe, all around 10/10 experience. Couldn't recommend this place enough!

Yelp
Great food, good portions, affordable, love the atmosphere. Kind servers and quality service always provided. 10/10 customer service 10/10 food 10/10 cleanliness

Yelp
Great ambiance and they are open late, but food was really too greasy and not in a good way... drinks were watered down... But they were open late and the hostess was accommodating and understanding.

Yelp
No notes. This place is amazing. There's a reason why it's rated so highly. There were other taco joints on the block yet there was a wait to get into La Puerta. The mugshot wall paper is hilarious. We got the guac, which was a huge serving and the chips were great. I ordered a classic marg, the mix and match tacos - shrimp, carnitas and carne asada this comes with a side of rice and beans. Everything was delicious. Will definitely be back.

Yelp
I'm biased coming from the DC area (I.e. limited exposure to good, authentic Mexican food), but I think these are the best guac and tacos (Surf N' Turf--highly recommend) I've ever had. The rajas con crema is also a nice touch that I've never had before. It was a bit of a wait, but absolutely worth it. If I ever come back to San Diego, I'll definitely be coming back here.

Yelp
La Puerta I have been eyeing you for literal years! So happy I finally got to try this restaurant and it completely lived up to the hype. We ventured into their downtown SD location which was walking distance from our hotel. La Puerta has held notoriety over the years and been a restaurant that always seems busy. They don't take reservations so we thought it smart to come here at an "inbetween hour" around 2pm and that was the move. At 2pm the restaurant was still surprisingly 90% full but we did get to be seated right away at a small table. I would say avoid this place during lunch or dinner rush hours because I've seen other reviews that people do sometimes have to wait quite a while just because this isn't a big restaurant and it is pretty popular and well known. I love the decor and atmosphere here. It's rock 'n' roll and very cool. The menus were styled to look like popular album covers and the interior definitely had the perfect mixture of representing being a Mexican but also having a little edge, so that it wasn't too traditional. They had a large bar and that looked like a cool spot to sit. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. She hustled and made us feel valued as she was all smiles and wanted to ensure we had a good meal. Very kind gal and overall the food and drinks came out pretty fast despite how busy they were so that was a plus. For my cocktail I went with the purple haze. It was a 10/10 for a blended cocktail. Essentially it's their margarita frosty topped with sangria frosty. Omg it was so good and flavorful. A fun twist from just getting a regular marg or sangria. Their cocktails were definitely cool. My friend got the bark at the moon spicy margarita and she was happy with it. The food was also pretty good. I got a taco sampler plate and you really can't go wrong with that option. Three tacos and I could pick any protein I wanted. I opted for the carnitas, asada and shrimp. They were all good. If I could only have one I'd say go with the carnitas. The shrimp was a close second though. The rice and beans were the perfect pairing to the tacos and everything was delicious. La Puerta lived up to my expectations and I'm so happy we made it in because this is a solid spot for Mexican fare and cocktails. Service, drinks, food, ambiance and prices were 5/5. Definitely a must stop when in SD (just try to beat the rush).

Yelp
Arrived to San Diego on a Friday evening and wanted Mexican food. La Puerta in San Diego's Gaslamp District was walking distance from our hotel which made it super convenient. Upon entering, the atmosphere reminded me of a bar in New Orleans. It had a warm atmosphere, soulful music playing in the background, and I was surprised to see mugshots decorating the walls. We were greeted and seated promptly. For starters, we ordered guacamole and chips which was a very large portion and good. For dinner, I ordered carne asada tacos that were well-seasoned (best seasoned meat I ever had at a restaurant). My friend ordered the surf and turf dish and the shrimp was well seasoned too. I wish I lived locally because I would definitely consider this restaurant for catering if I host an event. For drinks, my friend ordered the Purple Haze which he said was refreshing and strong. I ordered a strawberry margarita which was good and strong. Our server (forgot her name) was attentive and friendly. Will definitely return when we are in the area.

Yelp
After a long 2.5-hour drive from LA, their happy hour really hit the spot definitely a win. I ordered the steak and shrimp tacos, and they were great! The shrimp had this citrusy, lemon-pepper seasoning that made each bite pop, while the steak was perfectly cooked and paired beautifully with the shrimp for a balanced, flavorful combo. We also tried an appetizer (pictured below), though it wasn't particularly memorable compared to how amazing the tacos were. The service, however, was exceptional! Our server switched during our visit, and both of them were incredibly sweet, attentive, and made sure we were well taken care of the entire time. The atmosphere was just as impressive, the menus were creatively designed on what looked like vintage album covers (also pictured), and the artwork throughout the space really added to the artsy, laid-back vibe. Overall, La Puerta Taco is definitely a spot I'd recommend. Great tacos, fun ambiance, and outstanding service perfect for a happy hour stop after a long drive.

Yelp
How can you say no to getting tacos in San Diego? There is a plethora of amazing places to choose from and after being in California for a few years, I have such deep heartfelt appreciation for solid tacos. After waiting for our friends to fly in, we decided to check out La Puerta, which they recommended. I will say this place is definitely a vibe! The interior is really casual and fun and I loved seeing all the mugshots plastered on the walls. The decor gives such a hipster feel and I would definitely dine for the ambiance alone. If you know anything about the 27 club, you'll definitely get a kick out of this place! We had to wait 45 mins for our party of six but the hostess told us we could grab some drinks from the bar while we waited. Our group got a round of mexican candy shots and before we knew it our table was up. The Mexican candy shots hit the spot: fruity and citrusy with a rim of chamoy and tajin. I am used to the watermelon variety but this one tasted more like grapefruit and I really enjoyed it because it had the right amount of sweetness. When we got seated, we ordered some chips and guac and some carne asada fries. Portions were a good size to feed our ravenous table. For entrees, we got mix n match tacos and some people in our party split a burrito. I had cochinita and pastor tacos and the pastor was definitely my favorite of the two. I also liked how the plates came with beans and rice so it was very filling and worth the $19 price tag. I also ordered the howl at the moon cocktail which was a spicy margarita with reposado. I thought it was really nice and refreshing but I think I would like to taste a little more of a spicy kick to it. If you have reservations about spice and want to try it, it may not to be too overwhelming. (Definitely subjective though, I have a high spice tolerance) Overall, a solid dining experience. I will definitely return when I'm in the area!

Yelp
Hopefully I have the right location. I'm not a native to San Diego, but I know it was a downtown location. Anyway our party of 3 ordered guacamole, and the usual which included vege quesadilla, shrimp and beef burrito. The pick of the dishes was the guacamole, the cheese on the top was pure inspiration. Every other dish was very well cooked. Vege quesadilla was well spiced with cooked onions enhansing the flavor of other stuffings. The presentation too was excellent. And the bill was ridiculously low. Great food at such prices in downtown San Diego is unique.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've been to La puerta. So I decided to update my review. First things first , I really do like their chicken quesadillas and the Carne Asada fries. Really good place for a Mexican food with good drinks in the gaslamp. Service is fast and efficient. This is a great vibe to be in if you're looking for a good date place or a place to hang out with your coworkers and friends.

Yelp
This is a great restaurant! My wife and I stopped in while visiting for a conference in November and we really enjoyed our meal. The atmosphere is fun and we really liked that the menus were different album covers and that they have famous mugshots all along the walls. Our server was great and she provided excellent service throughout the meal. Our margaritas were delicious and the chips and salsa were great as well (the flavor of the salsa was fantastic). We both got a taco sampler and every single one was delicious, flavorful, and well-constructed. This is a place that we'd visit often if it was near us in Nashville. This is a great place and we highly recommend it!

Yelp
Delicious food. Nice atmosphere. I got the carnitas fries & it was full of flavor, fresh ingredients and a good portion size. The restaurant is kinda small but has a nice vibe and played good music. Service was OK. Street parking only.

Yelp
La Puerta is a vibe. It is the place to gather, enjoy the company of friends, and good eats and drinks served with friendly staff. We loved our meals. I had a great Al pastor burrito smother in side-by-side red and green sauce lined with crema. We had chips (love the salsas, particularly the roasted red salsa.) my son loved the chicken burrito, saying the meat was exceptional. I must agree. Try the appetizers too. The queso fundito paired well with their house-made tortilla chips. Grab your friends and go party.

Yelp
Love that this place offers HH on the weekends! Stop by for a quick bite, they immediately sat us. We sat outside due to bringing my dog. Service was quick and good as always, they were constantly refilling our waters and brought out our drinks quickly. Ordered Cochinita Tostaditas and Carne Asada Quesadilla. The portion for both items were plenty and the salsa were delicious! You can always tell if the food is good based on the chips and salsa :)

Yelp
Coming back to La Puerta had me nervous. It had been almost a year since my last visit... would it be as good as I remembered? It was! Another absolutely awesome visit! The music was rocking and we got a table right away. The drinks were cold and refreshing, the house margaritas are awesome! The food was so good I almost forgot to get pics. We devoured 3/4 of the quesadillas before I could stop to think! The tacos are next level. I love the flavor balances and fresh ingredients. I got the surf 'n turf tacos. Absolutely amazing! It's hard to stop thinking about them! Great venue, great service, great food! If you are anywhere nearby, this is a must hit spot!

Yelp
Came here for dinner with a friend and was able to make a reservation which was great. I wasn't super hungry so I got the ceviche which was delicious. It had amazing flavor, the shrimp was fresh and I loved all the avocado. Although I think if I had to share it, it would've been gone fast! My friend got the tacos which she liked and thought had good flavor. The plate wasn't huge and their prices are def a bit high but she enjoyed her meal. She also got the frozen margarita which she thought was yummy. The service was pretty good and the restaurant was busy. It's a cute restaurant located in a bustling area. Prices are def on the higher end, more than I feel they should be but we still Enjoyed the experience.

Yelp
I'm still dreaming about this food!!! We came here for our last meal in San Diego, for lunch on a Monday and it wasn't crowded so we got seated right away. Service was fantastic, everyone was so friendly and nice and our server was helpful with suggestions too. We got a frozen margarita, taco plates, and quesadilla. Everything was absolutely delicious, all of the tacos were incredible - we mixed and matched veggie, adobado, carne asada, pollo asado, and shrimp. I loved the adobado in particular and I'm not generally a huge fan! I wanted more after finishing. The rice and beans were really yummy too and I loved the rajas con crema. It was all super filling too.

Yelp
While in San Diego, everyone suggested trying carne asada fries as San Diego is well known for its Mexican food. So, very simply, I searched for carne asada fries in downtown SD and came across La Puerta. Little did I know I would be blessed with the savory experience of their carne asada fries!! They were amazing! The beef was tender, the guacamole was soft, and the onions were caramelized just right! The fries soaked in everything and were right at home. Despite it being busy too, they were able to seat us relatively quickly. Definitely recommend this place if you're around downtown San Diego!

Yelp
La Puerta, always a great place to start off the night. Been coming here for over 15 plus years. Staff here is always so cool and very attentive, ambiance is very chill with good energy. Food is good here along with many choices of signature drinks and tons of options of tequila. Totally recommend La Puerta.

Yelp
Run far away. This place has went downhill quickly and is no longer a place I would go to. Not sure what has happened, but I will be walking on by moving forward.

Yelp
Came here with some coworkers on a work trip this week. It was good! Seemed to be the busiest restaurant in town and they have a full bar with two big TVs as well as big booths to sit in. We were seated at a big round booth and the service was very good. I ordered the street tacos - cochinitas, carne asada and carnitas. We also got chips and guac for the table. The standout taco was by far the cochinita. The pork was tender and flavorful and the pickled onions worked well. The other two tacos were just so so. I really liked the side of veggies they gave mixed with a cream sauce. The chips and guac were HUGE and the chips were thick the way I like them. Only negative is the salsa was just okay. Nothing special about it. Overall a 3.5 rounding up to a 4.
google avatar

Leslie G.

Yelp
Been eating here for a couple years. How have I not reviewed!! A few if my favorite things: Mexico City salad: it's a pretty simple salad with tomato, cucumber, avocado but that cilantro dressing brings it all together. Veggie quesadilla or burritos. Fresh veggies. Love the poblano TJ dogs get on happy hour Of course tacos. Can't go wrong with any. Did have an issue with one time with a server increasing my 20% tip to almost 50% credit card gave me the adjustment. So keep the receipts. I'm local but maybe thought I was a tourist and easy target. If there food wasn't delicious I probably would have not returned. Though in all times going this was the first issue. The ambience is great. Love the mug shots. The bar gets super tight and crowded at happy hour. You'll know your next seat partner intimately. Wish they removed a couple stools.

Yelp
Sophia was an amazing bartender and was very attentive! The food was amazing! Would definitely come again!

Yelp
Amazing taco Tuesday specials! Any taco for $3. I tried their carne asada tacos and they were amazing! They are street tacos so be sure to offer several. Service is great and the vibe is, too. Come check them out for taco tuesday or for a late night happy hour.
google avatar

Luiza M.

Yelp
First things first, probably the best margarita I've ever had (and I'm not a big fan of margs) Second, their salsas are addicting, I don't know how they packed so much flavor into both their red and green salsa but I want to buy a tub of each The vibes in this place are so cool, my boyfriend and I had so much fun spotting and talking about artists in their musician mugshot wall All the food we had was great, since they are on the top ten tacos list in the US, I decided to try the mix and match tacos and although the pastor and asada were good, the shrimp blew them out of the water, I would get three of those next time! And if you get a burrito, definitely make it wet cause the red salsa on top of that burrito was incredible. Will be coming back to try their brunch menu
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
The atmosphere was very divey and lively! Our server, Chloe, was great and see made sure to help us choose our options when we couldn't lock it down. I ordered an Old Fashion with Blanton's and I could not get enough of how smooth they made it! My wife and I both ordered the 3 taco combo with chips and guacamole as an appetizer. Everything was SO delicious! We had no wait time and that could be a timing thing but we were seated right away and greeted by Chloe within 5 minutes. Great place!
google avatar

Dilhan B.

Yelp
My Carne Asada Burrito with the green sauce was next level good. Green Sauce is the way to go. Mexican food is always great in San Diego. La Puerta has a nice collection of Tequilas and their cocktails are great too. We had to wait like 20 mins but that was expected. Service was fast and very good after we sat down. I loved the vibe there too. A must stop when you are in San Diego.
google avatar

Yelp
I can't speak for daytime, but this place is a vibe with great food at night following the Padres game. My boyfriend said this was the best burrito he's ever had! Then, he was obsessed with Mexican food for the remainder of the trip. I had an excellent (and super affordable) salad with plenty of ingredients. I don't know how they do it, but the avocado was perfectly ripe. Like a 1/1 million avocado. The salad also had yummy tortilla strips, fresh corn, salty cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, and two really yummy dressings. One was more of a spicy sauce, and the other was a dressing. And the salad was something crazy like $8 only. In the evening, the place changes to a bar vibe, and they require ID. We ate dinner at close to 10 PM. Talk about a late dinner! Good food and good atmosphere. And potentially the best burrito ever, depending on who you ask.

Yelp
Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had! Excellent cocktails and fun/kind service Queso fundido is almost as good as my grandmother used to make
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
One of my go-to spots for drinks whenever I'm in San Diego! Reasonably priced and they have a large selection to choose from. My favorite is the "Bark At The Moon" which is their version of a spicy margarita. I usually just chill at the bar when I'm here, so I haven't tried their food besides the carne asada fries and guacamole, both of which I highly recommend.
google avatar

Darius O.

Yelp
La Puerta is a popular Mexican restaurant in the gaslamp district. The good: the Cali burrito was bomb! Pretty unique as well. Usually Cali burritos are dry because most places just throw fries, carne asada, and guac together. La Puerta adds crema (sour cream) to the mix and everything mixed perfectly. This burrito was obliterated. The meh: the drinks were just okay. I ordered a Paloma and I've made better ones in the backyard. The watermelon margarita was just a frozen margarita poured out of a machine with some watermelon syrup. Overall a solid option in Gaslamp

Yelp
Arrived around 6 pm on a Saturday and it was pretty crowded already. Nicely decorated and chill vibes. Everyone seemed to be having a good time with drinks and something to share. Server was really nice and was cooperative when we told them that we needed to have 3 separate checks at our table due to business expenses. Music choice was a bit weird for a Mexican restaurant tho Food was awesome. Couldn't stop eating the fries and just wanted more. The ceviche was well seasoned too. The tacos were slightly disappointing but the appetizers and the shareable made up for it. Would definitely come back again.

Yelp
Came here two years ago- best margaritas I've ever had. Carlos was our server. Super attentive and great. Came again this week and that spicy marg continues to slay. The food is also epic. Like if I lived here I'd by a weekly subscription to their food. Love it all so much!

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Kind of a bar atmosphere, although we brought our grandkids and we were all very comfortable there. The only downside, there was a bit of a weight, but it was a Saturday evening.

Yelp
This was my first taste of the gastronomy of San Diego and it did not disappoint. Yes, we have Mexican food in the motherland (NY) but it is nothing remotely in the galaxy of the quality of the Southwestern US and La Puerta drives that point home. We elected to sit outside because it was a lovely day. Is every day a lovely day around here? Damn. The service was wonderful. Our server was attentive and friendly and checked in on us frequently. I took a peek at the drink menu first. They have a great drink menu but I couldn't resist the shit that they aggressively advertised as award winning, by travel & leisure no less, the Bark at the Moon. It's the typical shit but with the addition of Serrano agave and I was warned that it was spicy (it isn't really) but it was very tasty. GF ordered the Purple Haze which is their house sangria swirled into a frozen margarita. Very interesting...in a good way. I imagine it would be refreshing on a hot day. Ever since GF's guacamole seizure a few years ago, she went from being my white girl, basic bitch guac partner in crime to having a strange aversion to it. This means we can never order guac because I cannot take a whole appetizer serving to the face by myself. The table next to us ordered it and it looks like a work of art. Queso has become our go to Mexican place appetizer and this was another realm than the pudding-like substance we have become accustomed to in the motherland. This was actual melty cheese. It is cheese pull goals. Heaven on earth. The accompanying chips are pretty good, too. I was pleased to see their vegetarian/vegan options but as a vegetarian who hates onions and mushrooms, that can be challenging at a Mexican joint, and taking the tacos and quesadillas off the table for me. I wanted to start the trip off on a nutritious note and the Mexican City salad fit the bill. Romaine, avocado, tomato, cucumber, carrots, cortina cheese cubes, and a really nice, refreshing dressing made for a very enjoyable meal. A great salad with a Mexican twist. I threw in a side of vegetarian refried beans (dope they offer this) and was absolutely stuffed by the end. GF ordered the grilled veggie tacos with onions, poblanos, guac, pico, and cheese. This was served alongside a really generous platter of rice, beans, and rajas con crema. She made the point that, contrary to many other places, the peppers here weren't completely obliterated in the cooking process and retained some crunch which really added to the texture in the tacos. Unfortunately, she did not think of requesting they omit the guac which did detract from her experience but shouldn't for someone who enjoys avocado. She found that the refried beans could have had more flavor but I enjoyed them. Very tasty meal and overall enjoyable experience.

Yelp
From an out-of-town Eastcoaster, La Puerta is my spot! By far my favorite Mexican restaurant and favorite restaurant overall in all of San Diego! One of my favorite restaurants in any city period. Make it a point to come here most of the times when I'm in town. When possible, I make it a point to come here during their happy hour (3-5 PM) when all quesadillas, appetizers, and alcoholic drinks are half off. My go-to food here is their California burrito (burrito stuffed with steak, french fries, and cheese) which is not only filling (it's a full one-pound burrito) but happens to be the best burrito I've ever had. I also LOVE their quesadillas, which are excellently priced during their half-off happy hours and happen to be the best quesadillas I've ever had, LOL. Very strongly recommend both the California burrito and quesadillas but the food all around is excellent here. Complimentary chips and salsa (which are also excellent) with your food as well, though sometimes you have to ask them to bring the chips and salsa out for you. Great margaritas here also. My favorite is their Bark at the Moon, a super spicy margarita that's been noted in several publications as being one of the very best margaritas in the whole U.S. During La Puerta's happy hour you can grab one for only $7, which is definitely a steal. La Puerta also has a full bar, including a decent list of locally brewed beers. All-in-all a great spot in the downtown Gaslamp District. Looks like a small, hipster dive bar from the outside but is so much more... if you love Mexican food and drink you'll love this place!

Yelp
La Puerta is SO GOOD! The ambiance is so hip and comfortable. There's a beautiful fireplace that was blazing for the first night of autumn. The bar is huge and seats are super comfortable. Service at the bar was fantastic. We ordered a few different cocktails from the extensive and eclectic menu, and all were delicious. For dinner we ordered rolled tacos and a Caesar salad to start - both of which were gorgeous and so tasty. We had two kinds of steak tacos for our main courses and it's hard to say which was better. Tacos came with exquisite beans, fluffy rice and an onion and corn side dish that makes my mouth water just writing this. I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Such a great experience! Stopped by on a Saturday right before 3pm. Surprise! It was almost happy (on a Saturday!) with half off apps and drinks!! Sat at the bar and Kendal was great! Only wish she had brought us chips and salsa sooner. When we ordered Guac, she never brought any! But we could tell she was super busy. Had to try the famous Bark at the Moon (written up in Travel & Leisure) and it didn't disappoint! The tajin (chili lime salt) rim was amazing. I wasn't sure I'd like it so Kendal offered half regular salt and have tajin. Go for the tajin!! I would have loved it a bit more spicy but I'm sure you can ask for that! Got the Cochinita Tostaditas and they were delicious and huge. Large slices of avocado on top. I had to bring two home. My friend is vegetarian and they were able to do bean tostaditas with lard-free beans. She said they were great too! The guac was great and so huge! Definitely shareable for table of 6 or so. Met a lovely local who said it's the best happy hour in the Gaslamp! I'm sure it gets busy so call for a ressie!

Yelp
HH at La Puerta is the time to come! The bark at the moon spicy marg is delicious and on happy hour (all alcohol is on HH); we liked it so much we each got three. The Cochinita pibil here is amazing! We always get it in some form but this time we opted for the quesadilla and I'm glad we did! It was delicious and the guac/pickled onions it came with were the perfect touch. La puerta never fails!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite places to go for happy hour. Great drinks, great food, great places, and almost always great service. I went on Sunday night and had a wonderful time and then decided to go on Monday with friends from out of town and what a complete difference. I would love just to talk to somebody from the company before I post a review about what happened. The review above is for Monday night and not Sunday

Yelp
Good vibe, good food and good service. We came here because they had some veggie options for my husband who is vegetarian including, potato flautas, grilled veggie burrito that my husband really liked. I ordered the mix and match tacos. The beef was a little tough and the chicken taco was just ok. I actually enjoyed the grilled veggie taco the best. We did wait close to 40 min even though we came a little past 4:30 on a Saturday evening so be prepared to wait during the weekend. The food however came out pretty fast.

Yelp
La Puerta continues to be one of my favorite happy hour spots in San Diego after coming for over 2 years. I wanted to highlight how SUPERB their chips and guac are: the chips are so crispy & homemade tasting paired with the perfectly seasoned guac. Combine the guac with one of their house salsas and you have a dynamic duo. Pro tip: La Puerta gets super busy close to the end of happy hour (especially if there is a Padres game) so get there earlier in the afternoon for quick seating.

Yelp
Excellent food & drinks! Great vibe inside & decor was cool. Located in the gas lamp district. People waiting outside to be seated. It was a busy night due to conventions & lots of tourists as we were out of towners too! Ordered about 3 appetizers for table, then we each got meals & cocktails. Food seemed to come quickly as servers helped out when our main gal was not around. Only issue was being able to split the bill into 5 as we were all not cash carriers. We all met from conference and not each others Venmo friends so after hesitation the server finally fixed the bill. lol! 1st world problems Otherwise, would visit again if I was in town.

Yelp
While in San Diego we wanted tacos and this restaurant had great reviews. The decor is really cool in this place. They have mugshots of artist on the wall, a wall on the opposite side of Aretha Franklin and others and their menus are album covers. My husband and brother had the surf and turf burritos which they both said were delicious. I had tacos (shrimp, chicken and carnitas) they were good but I've had better. I would recommend this place for anyone visiting San Diego.

Yelp
We came here for brunch, because there were some fun yelp pictures and we were at downtown gaslamp. The photos seems misleading as the place sort of seemingly went down hill since a lot of these pictures are taken. There isn't quite any parking around, and you may need to pay for parking. Seemingly there are brunch options but there isn't many people around at the place on the weekend getting brunch. Also the table and chairs were sticky, and smells a bit moldy musky. Not that I am a picky person or anything, but its a bit concerning since its a cool 60 degree weather and they have open door and can prob wipe it a bit. the menu is also a bit sticky which makes it all the more displeasing. we ended up leaving the place because the feeling wasn't right, but the menu for price for food was also a bit high for the portion size as it seems. come here at your risk!

Yelp
I was looking for a taco spot that was open late in San Diego, and this seemed like the perfect choice. The staff are really kind and friendly and allowed me to choose whatever table I wanted. The ambience of the restaurant was really nice, they have a wall filled with celebrity mugshots, and another eclectic wall. There was just a really unique ambience. I ordered the fish tacos and thought they were just OK, however, I was with my boyfriend who ordered a burrito and said it was excellent. We both got margaritas, which were pretty good albeit strong, and they definitely had a lot of drink options. I don't think this is the most authentic taco spot in San Diego, but definitely a cute one with great proximity to bars and things to do in the area.
