The 20 Best Lunch Spots In Santa Monica - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"For lunchtime tacos in Santa Monica, the casual La Purépecha is our go-to option. The handmade corn tortillas here are plump and sturdy enough to hold heaping amounts of asada, guacamole, cilantro, and onions—which they do. We prefer to spend a little more and order them taconazo-style, which adds a layer of molten, seared cheese with a satisfying crunch. If you want something a little more substantial, the machaca burritos are very solid, too." - sylvio martins, jess basser sanders

The Best Restaurants Near Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"There are so many manic tourists on The Promenade that, after a while, you’ll begin to completely dissociate and let the crowd take over your movements. Go regain bodily autonomy at Le Purépecha. This casual Mexican restaurant is only about four blocks from The Promenade, but feels like a clean break from the chaos. The bright, casual space is filled almost entirely with people who live in the area and the food is both reasonably priced and delicious. Go for the tacos—they’re our favorite in Santa Monica—which are made with handmade corn tortillas sturdy enough to support generous scoops of meat, guacamole, cilantro, and onions." - brant cox

The 18 Best Mexican Restaurants On The Westside - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"For tacos in downtown Santa Monica, the casual La Purépecha is our go-to. The handmade corn tortillas here are plump and sturdy enough to hold the heaping amounts of grilled asada and guacamole, and the fresh salsas pack a punch. We prefer to spend a little extra and order our tacos taconazo-style, which adds a layer of molten griddled cheese with a satisfying crunch. The 25 Best Restaurants In Santa Monica

"La Purépecha makes the best tacos in Santa Monica. The handmade corn tortillas are deep yellow, rough around the edges, and sturdy enough to support generous scoops of meat, guacamole, cilantro, and onions. Everything about this counter-service spot is thoughtful, from the free chips and pickled carrots to the daily agua frescas. Step up your taco by making it a taconazo, which adds griddled cheese beneath your adobado or asada. For something even more substantial, Purépecha serves an excellent chilaquiles plate and a solid machaca breakfast burrito. " - arden shore, brant cox, nikko duren, sylvio martins

Google
La Purepecha Cocina Mexicana in Santa Monica is a hidden gem with super friendly staff who make you feel welcome right away. Loved the complimentary chips and salsa — fresh, crunchy and full of flavor! I tried the California burrito; flavors were on point but I do wish the fries inside had been crispier and the wrap a bit easier to hold. Portions are generous, prices fair, and I appreciate that they even have a clean restroom for customers.

Google
Stunned, some of the best tacos I've had in a long time. They were oozing with flavor and moisture. Really well seasoned they were. The shrimp taco was divine, but expensive.

Google
I ordered the California burrito with chicken, and overall, it was just okay. There wasn’t anything particularly special about it. The chicken and fries inside were good, but the burrito itself tasted a bit dry. One thing that bothered me was that all the guacamole ended up in one part of the burrito, so most bites didn’t have any, and then one bite had way too much. It would been better if it was spread out more evenly. Tortilla is good, probably the only thing I really liked about that burrito. The burrito also comes with chips and salsa. The chips were pretty standard, nothing amazing, but I do appreciate that they include them as a side, not every restaurant do that. As for the restaurant itself, it didn’t really impress me. The interior isn’t very cozy or inviting. There are some tables and a few TVs, but it feels more like a place to grab a quick bite and leave rather than somewhere you would want to sit and relax. It’s more functional than comfortable. There is a restroom available, but I didn’t use it, so I can’t comment on its condition. Overall, it’s an okay spot for a quick meal, but not somewhere I’d go out of my way to visit again. Maybe other menu items are much better, I don’t know.

Google
My friends and I just left a funeral. We were thrilled to be together after many years apart. Let's go get food. Look up Best Mexican Food in Santa Monica!!! Less than 2 miles from the mortuary. We arrive were greeted warmly, our orders were made perfectly, items delivered to our table: fresh, hot, and just as good as we expected!!! Great stop for a lunch date, if in the neighborhood, or at the beach. You won't be disappointed (first time here for all of us).

Google
Loved it !! It was generous, fresh and tasty (and I am picky). It's great value for the price too. Thank you for that guilty pleasure !

Google
Great local spot! Got the tacos and burritos and ended up coming back with our friend group 3 times during our trip. The staff were so helpful and friendly. Our personal fav was the California burrito but all was good :)

Karen L.

Google
The food and the service are incredible. I loved the street tacos. The best I’ve ever eaten!

Raquel H.

Google
We looked up best fish taco and seeing this spots pictures and video of fresh made tortillas, we had to come. The staff were friendly and attentive. She was actually making fresh corn tortillas when we walked in. It is small for dine in but it was only 2 of us. We ordered a fish and shrimp taco, they were excellently cooked well. Fresh salsa, fresh fish that was grilled and not batted was a 💯 % for us!!! The food was ready promptly and left us wanting more. We will definitely be returning for our next trip.

Yelp
La Purépecha's California Burrito is a flavor-packed meal! The burrito is stuffed with tender carne asada, perfectly cooked fries, gooey cheese, and fresh toppings. Every bite hits the right balance of savory and satisfying. Portions are generous, the flavors are bold, and the staff is friendly. Perfect for a hearty, delicious Mexican meal that leaves you fully satisfied.

Yelp
I recently moved to the area. I can see that this is become my favorite spot for tacos on the west side. The food is amazing. The atmosphere is great. The staff is truly welcoming and not even to mention how good the food is highly recommend this place 10 out of 10. Atmosphere 10 Staff 10 Food 10

Yelp
Excellent. Inconspicuous little storefront on Broadway in Santa Monica that obscures some of the best Mexican food in the neighborhood. Friendly staff. Very pleasantly surprised.

Yelp
Had lunch here with my wife the other day and it was very good. The place has limited seating so I suggest ordering to go if you come with a big group. I got the shrimp burrito and it was stacked! Full of great flavor! Wife got the asada street burrito and she also states that it was delicious! Complimentary chips and salsa were an added touch. The service was also top notch. Great spot. Can't wait to come back and try some more seafood options.

Yelp
honestly, i thought it wasn't going to be authentic based off location but so glad that i decided to just try. these are my new favorite tacos de carnitas hands down. the tortillas hechas a mano were wonderful, carnitas were to a perfected crisped edge and the avocado was fresh. this is such a lovely nod to michoacán can't wait to go back

Yelp
Lovely mom and pop neighborhood taco shop. The service was friendly and the person helping me made great recommendations. I love their daily deals, we went in for taco Tuesday, where all their tacos were $1.50 except for fish tacos. The al pastor one was my fav! The ambiance is pleasant, there's space for about 15 people to sit. Good experience overall!

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place. I was visiting Santa Monica for a two days and came here both days. We first stumbled into it looking for lunch, and Juan at the counter helped us out. Juan has such a great vibe. He recommend the shrimp, so I got a shrimp taco and a fish taco. WHEN I TELL YOU this absolutely blew my mind. Easily the best taco I've ever had in my existence. I got it for takeout and actually had to come back later that evening just to tell them all how good the tacos were lol. They give you chips and salsa with every order which is such a nice touch - I feel like you don't get that too often these days. Chips were great, one of the salsas was so spicy in the best way. I will come back here every time I visit LA!

Yelp
Super casual spot where you order at the cash register and it's brought to you. I came by for dinner and got taken care of very quickly and the food was out in a very reasonable time. I went with the street burrito, which I found to be tasty. They did forget about my friend's drink, but it was taken care of quickly once they realized. Good spot!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was delicious. I had the adobada street tacos and they were fresh and full of flavor. Sarah was friendly and made the atmosphere very welcoming. Easily one of my favorite places in Santa Monica.

Jorge G.

Yelp
Ended up getting a refund. If you have the patience to wait, then this place is for you. Ordered ONE mulita. After almost 30 minutes of waiting I decided to just get a refund. Really bad first impression. Definitely will NOT be returning to this place

Roda P.

Yelp
David Help Us The customer service was very good as well as the food! Good and fresh! Oh the tortilla chips and salsa is must! Love the carnitas tacos! The tortillas are fresh too!
google avatar

Sophia N.

Yelp
My friend and I walked here from the Santa Monica pier in the evening. We had the garlic shrimp pictured here and I also got a fish taco. Both were really good with generous portions. The owner also gave us two salsas to spice up the food. Prices were reasonable and would definitely recommend coming here for a quick and easy bite.

Yelp
My 13yr old, picky eating daughter, said at first bite, "This is F*cking good." She had the California Burrito with Pollo. I had the Breakfast Burrito with Asada, and I have to agree with her. Can't wait for our next trip back!

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of Mexican food and I'm always looking for a new restaurant to try and enjoy! It was through a quick Google search that I found this restaurant and La Purapecha was close by so I said why not? The restaurant was a little bit of a challenge to find because the sign wasn't visible on the street. Parking was pretty much all metered parking as far as I know. Walking in, we saw that seating was pretty limited. We checked out the menu and the staff were very helpful in answering our questions. They have certain deals available depending on the day (Taco Tuesday, Wet burrito Wednesday, etc.) which I thought is a great way to expose and encourage different menu items throughout the week. We ordered the carne asada nachos to share, carne asada and adobada tacos and a carne asada wet burrito. For drinks, we had the melon agua fresca and the Coke. Before our orders came, we were served fresh tortilla chips with red and green salsa that was really crispy and good! The carne asada tacos were good, I just found myself adding more salsa than I'm used to for flavor. The adobada tacos were a bit salty to my liking. I enjoyed how generous the servings are, especially the guacamole! I give it 4 stars because the flavor of the food either lacked or was too much for certain dishes. Definitely filling though and I had an enjoyable experience!

Yelp

Yelp
Food was amazing, tortillas hecho a Mano I had a shrimp taco & fish taco & my husband had ceviche & we LOVED it Definitely going back At least once a week haha

Yelp
This is the best breakfast burrito I've had in Santa Monica. I ordered the steak breakfast burrito a few months ago and have truly been craving it since. I got another one yesterday and still very impressed! It is not the quickest stop but they make it fresh so it's worth the wait. Will be back whenever I'm in the area
google avatar

Sabina V.

Yelp
One of my favorite hidden gems! From the service to the most amazing food. I love the shrimp tacos. The tortilla is so fresh and the shrimp with the sauce is so good. You absolutely have to get the shrimp ceviche. It is so flippin good! The Jamaica is so fresh! Chilaquiles for breakfast are a must. My coworkers love the shrimp burritos. The quesadillas are delish! Haven't had anything that wasn't so amazing here. I highly recommend it.
google avatar

Grace K.

Yelp
Their tortillas were very thick and starchy. I felt like I was eating a taco tamale. However, I'm not a big fan of tamale so this restaurant wasn't for me. The fish was cooked very well. It's not easy to master a good grilled fish taco, but I was impressed. I would come back if they had an option for us to choose the thickness of tortilla.
google avatar

Kamron H.

Yelp
Place is pretty good compared to other Mexican take out. Compared to a truck or street vendor it's ok. The quesadillas are pretty good and mulita wasn't bad either. This place is even gringo friendly too but salsas still have a good kick to them.
google avatar

Angelic E.

Yelp
I love the food here it's authentic Mexican food, which is hard to find in Santa Monica. They make handmade tortillas. Their service is also really great and friendly and overall it's a great place to grab a quick bite to eat.
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
Not bad! I got the Asada Street Burrito and I would say it tasted like an elevated bean burrito. The asada was a little tough and under seasoned. If you don't like the taste of raw onions this isn't for you. The beans could have also used a bit more flavor but it also comes with two salsas, guacamole, and chips.

Loy P.

Yelp
YUM. i was craving tacos and this place hit the spot. tacos were huge and flavorful (and only 3.75 each!), refried beans were great, and it came with free chips and delicious salsa. would totally recommend this place!
google avatar

Elena V.

Yelp
We walked in here based on reviews. The staff was friendly and helpful. There's 5 of us, we ordered two California burritos with carnitas, a street burrito Al pastor, 4 fish tacos (2 of those to go), and 2 street tacos with carne asada. My daughter said that the fish tacos are her favorite in the United States, my son said his Al pastor burrito was the best he's ever had and my husband loved his California burrito. We will definitely stop by here again, soon! P.S. they had aguas frescas, and we got the Jamaica and the mango, both were delicious.

Jason S.

Yelp
This place is amazing! If you want delicious authentic Mexican food with hand made tortillas, this is your place! The food is absolutely delicious, not to mention everyone that works here is super friendly and welcoming.
google avatar

James T.

Yelp
La Purepecha is hands down my favorite taco spot in Santa Monica. The family-run family and super friendly service make every visit a great experience. Their handmade tortillas are next-level--way better than other places around. I can't wait for their pozole to come back, especially the verde version. Don't forget to check out their daily specials for some great deals!
google avatar

Ethan N.

Yelp
Food: i had the traditional bowl with adobada the meat was well marinated and had a good blend of savory & sweet. I enjoyed the food a-lot. I also got a pineapple Fresca and it wasn't too sweet which was perfect for me and tasted fresh. The hot salsa is also not as spicy as I'd like but still good. They have deals every day of the week. Go here based of their daily deals. For example when i went it was 10.99 for the traditional bowl & a free Fresca. Definitely utilize that! Sorry my photo looks gross i forgot to take an earlier photo :)

Aaron S.

Yelp
Great tacos. Took a little longer than I expected for taco, but everything came out piping hot and the tortillas were fresh homemade. We got the fish and carne asada street tacos and the carnitas taconazo. All 3 were great but the carnitas and fish tacos were certainly the best. Small seating area but great place to stop by for a quick bite or to take out.

Laurie Ann G.

Yelp
Ordered a simple Bean and Cheese. The place is cute and the service was good. The tortilla, however, was mostly raw. The texture on the sides that didn't come in contact with the grill on the final moved were sticky. I saved it and when i came back to it, it was a slimly sloppy mess. I will be back to try again, as I like that salsa and the beans.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Let's taco bout it. La Purépecha is a small but mighty Mexican restaurant in downtown Santa Monica. It's a small store front with a couple of tables set up outside. Great for takeout but you should eat there so it's fresh. The patio is always busy because the food is amazing. I love the tacos and my go-to is the carnitas. The handmade tortilla is out of this world and the the meat is always so juicy and flavorful. Insider's Tip: Visit on Tuesdays for the Taco Tuesday special!

Margaret L.

Yelp
Tacos here are the best. Been looking for yummy tacos in WLA for a while now and this place is that one place on the Westside that is truly authentic.

Cierra B.

Yelp
service 10/10, great tacos :) ordered street tacos, pollo asada, carne asada & adobada carnitas they served us free chips & salsa as well as water

B D.

Yelp
Food was good. Unfortunately the space is so small they only have like 3-4 tables to eat. I had to get my stuff to go even though I would have much rather sat there and ate.
google avatar

Xochitl V.

Yelp
My dad got a burrito + pineapple agua fresca and I got one mulita with carnitas, total was $24. I thought it was good maybe a little oily. I would come again for the mulita. :)
google avatar

Sonia M.

Yelp
Tortilla hechas a mano! Delicious hand made tortilla tacos! Not too expensive and great taste.
google avatar

Crass C.

Yelp
I'm in the mood for a ceviche and I was wondering to myself why don't I get it from here again ? It's because the last time I gave this place a shot I ordered ceviche and they made me ceviche with shrimp that hadn't been deveined.
google avatar

Alice H.

Yelp
This place is very cute and the staff are nice. Easy to order online and pick up. I got enchiladas, rice, and beans for decently cheap (for LA) and they even give you a side of tortilla chips with yummy salsa. It was very filling! This place is easy to miss if you're walking/driving by, unfortunately. I walked past it several times and didn't realize it was there -- but I am very glad I finally tried it!
google avatar

Carlos M.

Yelp
Looking for fresh Mexican food in the west side I came about La Pupurecha. The menu seemed appetizing, location was convenient and staff was friendly. The good: Aguas were delicious and refreshing. Salsas were flavorful. The bad: I ordered the California burrito and too my surprised it was California Lite. The burrito was composed of 97% cheese and French fries. Unfortunately, I only saw two minuscule pieces of Al Pastor, which I thought I was getting. Maybe it was a bad day, but I hope it's not the norm.

Ruwanthi D.

Yelp
I wanted the red pork pozole but it wasn't ready so I ended up getting the green chicken pozole and was very happy. The broth is thick and flavorful, even before you add the onions, cilantro and lemon. Ordered the Adobado and carnitas mulitas on Mulita Monday (discounted). Super flavorful. The homemade corn tortillas rock, they are thick, soft and chewy. I should have asked for more. Place was packed at dinner time, tons of repeat customers. Looking forward to returning!
google avatar

Volland N.

Yelp
Shrimp burrrito was a delicious, I have never been eat like that one every inside was like a magic

Charlotte P.

Yelp
The food and the customer service was great. The ambience needs improvement. But overall, the food was great. I had the camarones a la diabla and the street tacos. No complaints here. The man at the register was very kind and helpful.
google avatar

Kyung Y.

Yelp
I'm a goner for hand made tortillas and this place delivers. Amazing tacos - especially the fish taco - fresh and yummmalicious! Great price.
google avatar

Assaji A.

Yelp
Delicious tacos at a great price, especially $2 tacos on Tuesdays!. It's a small place with counter service but definitely worth the visit. The adobada is spicy!!
google avatar

Y A.

Yelp
Their taco is the worst around the area. Inconsistent very inconsistent quality. Sometimes it's too spicy sometimes it doesn't have meat. I live down the street and was excited when they opened. We probably ordered 50 tacos from here since they opened but won't be ordering any more. There are other similar restaurants nearby that make better tacos consistently. Surprised to see the business survive despite the lack of consistency in quality of food - especially now that there is competition nearby... Skip this place and look for other options if you don't want surprises.
google avatar

Allen L.

Yelp
I'm sorry to write this but this food was not good. We ordered from doordash so take that into account. The steak, chicken, carnitas, were over cooked and flavorless. A few bites and we couldn't finish it. Maybe they had an off night because the other reviews are great?
google avatar

Lauren K.

Yelp
This is a charming family run joint, with kind staff and delicious food and seasonally rotating agua frescas. The folks at Purepecha were also kind enough to help sponsor Staff Appreciation Week 2023 at McKinley Elementary School, a public school about a mile away. Their generosity made our local educators feel seen and appreciated. They followed their dream and opened during the pandemic, let's show them support, because we need restaurants like Purepecha in our neighborhood!
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
I live nearby and wanted to love this place. Instead, it made me sad. Sometimes, I give places second chances because they are not always on their game all the time. That won't happen here. The fish tacos weren't terrible but just terribly, terribly bland. They seemed assembled by written instructions on a checklist. The tortillas were unusually thick and rubbery, the fish spongy, and the crispy coleslaw poured on and way too overpowering. I ordered a horchata, too, but they forgot to include it in my order so I can't comment on that one. Should you stay away? Well, if everything on the menu is like the fish tacos then, maybe, but they must do some things right, right?

Julie L.

Yelp
Where's the beef? The asada street burrito was mostly all rice and beans. I ate half of the burrito before I saw any meat, and there was very little of it. Not a great flavor, either. Disappointed. Also, they don't pack your to-go bowls with lids. Just a thin piece of foil, which doesn't hold too well on sharp turns. The paper bowl gets flimsy real quick, as well. They definitely need better to-go packaging. And more meat in the burrito!
