The Best Bakeries in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"La Purísima is one of Phoenix’s most iconic bakeries — a family-run institution that’s been shaping the city’s pan dulce scene since 1983. What started in Glendale has grown to three locations across the Valley, all packed with rows of conchas in vivid colors, puff pastry–wrapped ojos, molassesy marranitos, and dense, buttery empanadas. The fresh flour tortillas alone are worth the trip, and the savory side of the menu — with tamales, burritos, and menudo on weekends — draws just as many loyal regulars. Seasonal offerings like pan de muerto and rosca de reyes keep the bakery tied to its roots, while the daily buzz of early-morning regulars speaks to its staying power." - McConnell Quinn

The Best Holiday Tamales in Phoenix | Eater Phoenix

"La Purísima Bakery is a Phoenix favorite for tamales, masa, and a wide array of Mexican baked goods. Tamale options include red chile pork, green chile pork, roasted chile rajas (pepper strips) with cheese, and a sweet variety with raisins and coconut. Their tamales often sell out early — especially the red chile — so it’s best to arrive before mid-morning. They also offer prepared masa with a hint of sweetness that takes homemade tamales to the next level." - McConnell Quinn

13 Phoenix Bakeries Worth Checking Out

"La Purisima is a family-owned Mexican bakery with two locations, the original in Glendale and the second in Phoenix. There is a wide selection of items including pastries, breads, tamales, burritos, cookies, cakes, plus seasonal items (such as pan de muerto for Dia de los Muertos). The ojos, airy sponge cakes wrapped in puffed pastry, are worth a try, as are conchas (soft sweet bread shaped like a seashell), marranitos (a pig-shaped molasses cookie with a cakey texture), and galletas (sugar cookies)." - Asonta Benetti, Bahar Anooshahr

Google
They had the freshest and softest concha’s I’ve ever had in my life. I grew up in Phoenix and never had conchas like these. So delicious, would go perfect with a cup of coffee, tea, or milk!

Google
I love coming here for the cream or rice pudding filled donuts for my girlfriend. The service here is always welcoming and kind. Today I made a stop here for some, and I had some cash to pay part-way, but my card declined. The front cashier, without hesitation, decided to pay the rest off with her own cash. Another time, a worker saw a beggar overheating, and decided to give them some water. This establishment has excellent service and an even more excellent atmosphere and employees.

Google
This is easily one of the best Hispanic bakeries in town, and the line of locals outside says it all. They’ve got tasty burritos, a huge selection of sweet breads and pastries at great prices, quick service, and even cakes. Totally worth the stop!

Google
Always come here! They have the absolute best pastries and breads. They also make fresh tortillas and sell red/green chili burritos and on the weekend menudo. All tastes amazing 🤩. This is the go to spot. Staff is always so friendly and quick. You gotta try it out.

Google
If you want some authentic Mexican deserts then this is a must try! Place is packed on Sunday afternoon. And it is definitely not your hangout and take selfie kinda place. Get your stuff and move on. The ladies at the counter are super nice and helpful. They went to all the trouble helping me out to get what I want despite my non-existent Spanish skills. Awesome deserts, awesome service.

Google
It's a very busy but organized place. Fresh pastries are constantly coming out thru out the day. Tortillas coming off the stove as you order them. It's a bakery so no place to sit

Google
La Purisima Bakery at the Glendale location, did a phenomenal job on crafting a beautiful birthday cake for my mother's 81st birthday. They worked closely with us to create a cake to our exact specifications that was much appreciated by all our guests. Not only was it a beautiful cake, but was delicious as well. The staff supporting these efforts were patient and kind and exceeded expectations! FYI, had the opportunity to sample several bakery items on our numerous visits and were never disappointed; Delicious empanadas, cookies!

Google
I came here hearing it was so good. The service is best for people who look like the staff. The pastries we got were so dry I vowed to never come here again and tell others the same. Maybe they were good in the 90s but today “ai”can make a better pastry .

Yelp
Alright, folks, let me lay it out for you - if you're in the Glendale area and you're craving some top-notch Mexican pastries, La Purisima is where it's at. I've been going since I was a kid and let me tell you, it never disappoints. The pan dulce? Absolutely killer. And don't even get me started on their vanilla conchas. Their staff is also top-notch. Super friendly vibes all around. Now, here's the kicker - most of them primarily speak Spanish. But don't let that stop you! So, take it from someone who knows good pastry when they taste it - make a beeline for La Purisima. You won't regret it.

Yelp
This bakery was pretty busy on the Sunday morning we went to visit it. We found this bakery on IG and were like kids in a candy store. They had a lot of Hispanic bakery goods I have never seen before. We got so many different varieties from baked goods, geletina, and tortillas. All of the goods we bought were fabulous. My favorite was the Rosca de Reyes bread!' The best I've ever had. It's got an extra flavor and it was so soft!! I was sad we only got the small one. I was lucky enough to get the baby Jesus twice. (Side eye). If you're in town, make this place one of your stops.

Yelp
I'm a visitor out of state, aso I like to compare to other places I've visited..even México.. First fault: so many warning signs that makes me curious.. like the one that says not to touch bread till u pay.. The employees do assist you like expected, but I'm used to walking in a bakery and having a close look at everything that is offered.. Of course, I prefer self serve, that way I treat what I buy the best way and not depend on the cashier .. The bread was so so, not bad.. a little pricey for my likings... Would I return here again.. I don't think so.. I'll dare try another bakery till I might find one to my liking...

Yelp
I'm 38 years old now and my family has been coming here since I was around 5-6 years old. It has lasted because of its distinguishable food. Everything they make, they care deeply about and you can tell because of the quality and flavor. The lines are long sometimes but the staff works fast and its well worth the wait. This place feels authentically Mexican which makes me feel at home. I've introduced them to so many people in my life and they all continue to go on their own. Hands down the best bakery!

Yelp
La Purisma Bakery have the best Conchas ever!! The people working here are efficient and welcoming as well. Definitely my go to spot moving forward. Give them a try !

Yelp
Best tortillas, in my opinion. I'm jealous they aren't in California. The staff is very friendly as well. Always a great experience when we visit AZ.

Yelp
Had an extra day added to our trip to Phoenix so my husband and I made sure we got to La Purisima Bakery before we headed back home. This place is totally worth the hype! It was a Tuesday afternoon at around 2:00 p.m. but there was still a line outside. A good indicator for sure. They were so so many options inside and we had no idea what to go for. I looked up the must try foods at Mexican bakeries and made a short list. Pumpkin Empanada was lovely! I thought it would have a crispy outside but it was more soft. It went really well with the filling. Filling was not super sweet or anything. Just a really good bake. Chocolate Concha was so soft and fresh and light! Since it was so big I thought it would have some weight to it but it was actually really soft and light. Like cloud bread? It stayed fresh even the next morning. So nice to buy it into and we could have had more for sure. The Flan was addictive! Some of the best flan my husband and I have ever had. Soft and silky and perfectly sweet. I didn't have it with the whipped cream on the side because I preferred it plain. Husband liked it both ways. Had to get some of those Mexican Piggy Cookies aka Marranito because this is Christmas season right now. Sweetness was just right, and subtle gingerbread flavor came through as well. Had this 3 days later and it was still soft and really good. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Wow! What a great bakery. Delicious Mexican pastries incredible Sonoran style tortillas and really tasty red and green chili burritos. The staff was super friendly very and very helpful. The prices are ridiculously low for the quality. I grew up in Tucson, but now I live in Washington state, so I really miss delicious bakeries like this one. And this one, is one of the very best.
google avatar

Katherine S.

Yelp
Absolutely loved everything we tried and bought here. Get in line EARLY (like 6am) during the holidays for the best selections of tamales, pan dulces and conchas. We got red tamales with queso and shared with family for Christmas Eve. We tried allllll the empanadas (yum for limon and strawberry!) and could t resist a piggy cookie. Recommend loading up on one of everything and trying them over the next days with friends and family. Can't wait to return for more!

Monica L.

Yelp
Came for pan Dulce but decided to try the burritos. Only 2 choices - red or green with meat and potatoes. No beans or rice and I didn't miss them. The homemade steaming hot flour tortillas were phenomenal and both green and red filling delicious!. The pan Dulce was also good. Came back the next day for a dozen flour tortillas and tried tamales.

Be S.

Yelp
Ordered a cake, it was huge. Very good flavor. Loved how soft their Mexican bread is.

Yelp
We have gone to this bakery and go often. Since they expanded the bakery it is so much better. It's usually real busy, with people waiting in a line. However, the line moves pretty fast. The tortillas are the best. They have a large selection of bake goods. Also it is always very clean and the staff are friendly.

Peter L.

Yelp
Great selecting. Great pan dulce. The line can get long but worth the wait. Staff all appear to be super friendly.

Mark H.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican bakery. We have been regular customers for decades. We had our wedding cake made here and it was fantastic. I always stop in when I am in Glendale. Friendly staff, fresh pastries, excellent macaroons. Love this place it is a must try if you are in Glendale.
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
A Glendale favorite!! I haven't had a bad a pastry, burro, tamale, masa, etc. worth the wait.. there is always a line.

Mayra M.

Yelp
Disappointed in this cake I recently purchased. I originally asked if they can make me a heart cake for the next day . One of the girls from the register said yes then an older woman said they had one. Which they did it was nice. She said they barely made it today ( purchased on 05/29). This was for my mom's birthday for 5/30. She said it had strawberry filling . It did not it's just a bunch of whip cream . It cost me $50 and the cake was dry and cracked .. so disappointed for the price for it to be dry and not actual strawberry filling . I feel she just wanted the cake to be sold so it didn't sit there long. I feel this cake is at least 2-3 days old. I usually love leaving positive reviews but feel I got ripped off for the price . Food city has cakes for half the cost that taste dry which is why I did not purchase a cheap cake

Yelp
So growing up in South Texas pan dulce is a staple, I remember getting a big white bag after church with my family and my to go to were the marranitos. Anyway, been homesick lately and have been wanting to try this place for a while. The price is a little more expensive then Texas, but I get it it's Arizona. As far as the pan dulce-10/10. So fresh so soft, and you can tell the ingredients are legit. Only waited about 5 minutes and the customer service was fantastic. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This has been my favorite bakery since I was a kid. They have the best sweet breads/cookies/cakes & their food the sell like red chili burritos/tortillas/tamales are amazing! They really put their heart and soul into the foods they make & you can taste it. There is no place like this & the prices are great! This business is family owned & operated, so next time instead of stopping into your local grocery store for some Latin baked goods please stop in here. I will say the line can be long & the best stuff sells out so come in earlier than later.

Yelp
This place is soooo good! Tortillas? Amazing. They had a great flavor and a good "chew" to them. Burritos? The green chile is what dreams are made of. It's not super spicy, but it's packed with flavor. It's made with potatoes too. The potatoes are soft, not crunchy like fried potatoes or hash browns. But if I had a cute little abuelita, that's how I'd imagine her cooking would be. It feels like you're eating food made with love. They also have a red chile burrito. Yuuummm. Best information is to come early before all the best stuff is gone. They have pastries, too. I wanted to eat healthy today but the honey walked in the house, had a huge grin on his face, bag full of burritos and a box full of pastries. The pig cookies are my personal fave. Simple, not overly sweet, perfect with coffee and it's not too hard and not too soft Break your diet for La Purisima. #worthit

Yelp
And to finish off our Arizona trip... La Pursima Bakery... I'll keep this one short and sweet- just like their pastries. We got a bunch of pastries from here. And the verdict: Well the cookies were pretty good. That's about all I have to say.
google avatar

Elizabeth D.

Yelp
Sent my husband here while pregnant... we purchased a tub of masa and some sweet breads!!!! Let me tell you... these guys made my holidays. I'm so grateful. Tamales are time consuming and with just my husband and I, it was so nice to purchase pre mixed masa. I had my beef tamales in the steamer in no time! Mama wasn't on her feet the whole Christmas Eve. Our 2 year old was especially happy with her rainbow sprinkle cookies. She looked so cute walking around the house with her holiday treats.

Yelp
Must go to spot. Amazing bakery. Worth the drive. Me and my family try to make the 45min drive every few weeks.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome authentic Mexican bakery! All sorts of goodies that will remind you of Latin America!
google avatar

Liza W.

Yelp
This place is definitely good but not great!!! I feel like a lot of people blew it up. I honestly thought that I was going to walk into some warm fresh conchas and some off the hook sweet bread. It was just okay or me. I ordered a ton of sweet bread to try and some burritos. Two that were meat in green sauce and red sauce. They were teeny tiny little baby burritos. I mean, I guess it's good because it limited the portion but definitely do not try to get full off of one. The reason for the three star is because the staff just seemed annoyed. They would stare at you like wth do you want as I browsed the different sweet breads and just had a very nonchalant attitude. Seems like there were quite a few locals but for the folks that have never visited? I would definitely be a little kinder. Idk for me? I'd rather go to the market to purchase my sweet bread. Secret is to go in the am for the warm and soft conchas. Yummy!

Yelp
Great staff and very delicious pan dulce. It's close to home for me and I will be coming back more. I saw they have birthday cakes as well very interested to try.

Jennifer I.

Yelp
Food, Service and ambiance is always top notch, the ladies are always helpful and polite. I go mainly for the freshly baked Mexican bread, pan dulce which is always delicious and makes me forget about any diet. La purisima is always my go to when I have cravings! Don't forget about the flour tortillas!!!! Ugh delicious

Hannah A.

Yelp
I recently tried the tamales. I got the rojas and verdes con pollo! They were absoloutly amazing. The service was quick and easy and I enjoyed all of the welcoming decorations within the restaurant.
google avatar

Anthony V.

Yelp
I came here working out of town. I yelped a place and this came up as the most reviews for pan dulce. I tried the tamales and they were 10 out of 10 I'm very very very very picky and I'm from Los Angeles. Tamales were amazing. I saw the flour tortilla press squeezing out tortillas and I smelled and had to have some. I bought a dozen for $5 and they are worth $20 a dozen. I would come back here every single weekend for the rest of my life happy. They did have a line but it's because their products are so fresh and clean and delicious
google avatar

Greg F.

Yelp
A Glendale staple that everyone should try. I don't really need to talk up this place because there is a 20 min line every time I go. The breads and pastries are all fantastic and I haven't had one that I was upset with. Would highly recommend getting a couple Marranitos are perfect with a cup of coffee. If you don't pick a couple of these up to start your week you're only hurting yourself.

augie c.

Yelp
The best Mexican Bakery in Phoenix, hands down. Always clean, great service and delicious Mexican baked pastries and awesome tortillas.

Kassandra R.

Yelp
So happened to be by here and saw the reviews. well! Let me tell you...delicious! Probably the best pan dulce I've ever had(even including in Mexico). They're concha's are so fluffy and soft. Don't get me started on the muffin de Mantequilla! So delicious! We will definitely be coming back. The lady that helped us even gave us a free tortilla to try and am glad she did because even they're tortillas are so good! We bought some too! This is our bakery. We will drive the 30mins :)
google avatar

Deni G.

Yelp
Great Bakery This bakery has the freshest, tastiest mexican baked goods I have ever tasted, all of its items are wonderful, and there is such a great selection. Make sure you visit the ATM before you go to La Purisima since this is a cash only store. La Purisima features pan dulce, doughnuts, empanadas, cookies and delicious freshly made tortillas straight out of the tortilla machine, served nice and hot. If you stop in make sure to get a re or green chili burrito, the burritos are so good. Great prices and customer service.
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
Just want to update a few things, tortillas are now $4 for a dozen and they do take card now.
google avatar

Jack C.

Yelp
There is a reason why there is always a long line to get bread and cake from this place. Everything freshly made. Real authentic Mexican bakery. No short cuts taken here. All the bread is tasty and not overly sweet like those you get at supermarkets. Go try it. It's worth the wait in line.
google avatar

Teresa E.

Yelp
I have heard such great things about this place... if you like DRY tasteless dulce, then this is your place. I got a variety of items for the family to try. Everything was either day old, or two. So dry, coffee could not even help make it taste better. I did notice a lot of tortillas being sold. I got 1 dozen, which were ok. I prefer a thinner tortilla. These were a little too doughy. As I was getting rung up, I noticed someone ordered a burrito. The clerk said she recommended the green chili with potato as the red was not spicy. I ordered the green... got home, ready to bite into a yummy green chili burrito, and, well, it was not green at all. It was a bright red tasteless extremely small red chili burrito. Anyone who thinks this place deserves 5 stars either doesnt know what a GOOD bakery is or this is their only choice.
google avatar

Y C.

Yelp
ever see willy wonka chocolate factory its like that. well this is the bakery version. insane large selection of delicious baked goods! super service, super friendly, busy but always fast fast fast... also best tortillas in town!
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
I can't believe my brother in law just told me about this bakery! I would've been coming here a long time ago! He told me I had to get up early to come here because there's always a line out the door. Ok... so here I am... getting up at 5:30am (they open at 6.) for some sweet bread and burritos! Luckily for me there was no line! (But, when I left there was!) the staff was super friendly and welcoming. I loved it! I was in and out in a half hour. Everything is pretty reasonably priced. You get a lot for your money here. The sweet bread is soft and sweet! The burritos are good! They are also known for their home made tortillas. I got a dozen. They also sell menudo here!! I can't wait to try it next time! I will definitely come back to this bakery when I'm visiting AZ again!
google avatar

Adriana C.

Yelp
Omgggggg soooooo good! I got warm fresh tortillas and they are the best tortillas ever. All of the bakery goods we got were also so delicious for really good prices! I will be back to try a lot more!

Tawnya C.

Yelp
The best pan dulce around! The line moves quickly and the food is worth the wait! I will always recommend this place!
google avatar

Honest J.

Yelp
Great pastries and I love their burritos there. They are made with fresh tortillas you can see them as they grab them right off the press. They put a generous amount of meat inside and are delicious.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Fresh pan dulces and tortillas. Highly recommend. Lines are sometimes long but it goes pretty fast. Worth the wait.
google avatar

Arleen S.

Yelp
I'm originally from California and I have family in Arizona who always bring us tortillas from this bakery..fast forward, it's been a minute since they've come down to visit hence, no tortillas..I was on an anniversary trip in Arizona back in July..my family sent endless texts and calls to remind me to pick up 16 packets of tortillas..yes, that's right, 16! Picked them up and was on my way out the door until I saw some churros. Made an about face and bought two for the road..no regrets because they were delicious. Definitely will be back. And yes, my family was happy I picked up tortillas.
google avatar

Genesis D.

Yelp
I found La Purisima on a list of places that deliver birthday cakes but when I called they said they don't deliver cakes. Good thing I wasn't too far anyway and decided to consider them for a cake pickup. Thy made my twins' two birthday cakes beautifully! Delicious too.

Yam E.

Yelp
If I could give this place 100 stars, I would. I'm hispanic and this is honestly one of the best bakeries I've ever been to!! Everything is so fresh and even stays fresh for a couple of days after buying it! The staff is amazingly nice and patient and the prices are good, given the quality of what you're buying. 1000000% recommend trying this bakery with the variety of pan dulce they have!!
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
The best pan dulce around! Have a great variety and bread is light, soft and tasty. They're ramajes and flour tortillas are also great. Never disappointed.
google avatar

Gina C.

Yelp
Try the red chilli burritos and the green corn Tamales . The line was long but worth the wait. So many delicious pastries.
google avatar

Beth L.

Yelp
I hate giving a bad review so I'll just say it wasn't great for me. On my city wide hunt for good flour tortillas I came across this place. Hmm I thought, a Mexican bakery was a shoe-in for great torts, right? Not. They just didn't taste great & were quite pricy. ~ So I give up! Time for a YouTube sesh on how to make flour tortillas can't be that hard right, flour, salt, water & shortening!! Ok now the sweet goodies, tons of choices all looked really good. However the ones I chose were not so fresh and tasted like old grease (that's the only way to describe it). I might've just made the wrong sweet goodie choice so I wouldn't say they're all bad. Sorry La Purisma Bakery not worth me trying again.
