Searching for a lunch spot, me and a coworker chose La Roja de Todos as neither of us had ever tried Chilean food.
Scanning the menu there were some familiar dishes that I've see at other Latin American restaurants, so I decided on the unique sounding Pastel de Choclo casserole which combined corn, olives, onions, raisins, plus a protein duet of beef and chicken.
Akin to a Shepherd's pie but brought to a higher level, it was sweet and savory along with various textures from the creamy center to the crispy caramelized crust on top. I particularly loved the inclusion of raisins that were plump and juicy.
It was so tasty and filling that I was thinking about formulating my own version!
My friend ordered the Humitas appetizer as a entree, comprised of two large patties formed from corn wrapped in a corn husk served with a side salad.
The tamale-like Humita corn filling was flavored and textured very well; buttery, smooth, and densely filling. Being wrapped in corn husks imparted a noteworthy tinge of sweetness too. My friend very much enjoyed it.
Contrasting the heavy Humita was a refreshing side salad of tomato slices, white onion slices, and a simply dressing of what tasted like olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
Lastly, my friend ordered a unique Chilean drink called Mote con Huesillo, which the waiter described as being made from dried peaches, a simple syrup, cinnamon, water, and wheat granules. This drink was sweet and cooling, and so reminiscent of an Asian bubble tea (with it's pearlescent tapioca balls).
Another new food experience and really worth exploring further!
