Roman-inspired pizza, rice balls & dessert from famed Italian pizzaiolo in a casual setting.
"La Rossa was a Roman pizzeria located at 267 Lafayette Street, Soho, New York. It opened in December and closed after seven months. The restaurant was known for its traditional Roman pizza menu crafted by Stefano Callegari, including his signature cacio e pepe pie. Eater critic Robert Sietsema praised its margherita pizza as one of the city's best." - Carla Vianna
"After a splashy opening thanks to its credentialed pizzamaker, Roman pizzeria La Rossa in Soho has closed, according to Bowery Boogie, which reports that the space has been seized by the marshal. La Rossa opened in December 2018, as the first NYC pizza restaurant from Italian pizzaiolo Stefano Callegari, who is credited as the inventor of the street food sensation trapizzino. Callegari opened his first pizzeria in Rome in 2005 and went on to operate eight restaurants around the world. Here in New York, his La Rossa focused on 12-inch circular pies, some of which reimagined other classic Roman dishes as pizzas, as with the cacio e pepe pie. But it was La Rossa’s simple margherita pie that caught the attention of Eater senior critic Robert Sietsema, writing: 'The margherita was denser than the other examples in town and exceptionally cheesy; every bite was a pleasure.' During the day, the restaurant also served pizza al taglio, square slices served from the counter. The landlord now has possession of the building. City marshals can seize properties involved in civil matters, which includes rent, taxes, and landlord disputes. Most restaurants do not re-open after being seized, as has been the case for NYC restaurants like Kate’s Joint, Raw Material, Lanza’s, and Fatty ‘Cue. Eater has reached out for more information, and calls to the restaurant went unanswered." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya
"Roman pizzaiolo Stefano Callegari’s entry into NYC dining was the trapizzino, a bread pocket of sorts filled with classic Roman dishes, but pizza itself is what originally pushed Callegari to the forefront in Italy. At the 32-seat La Rossa in Soho, he’ll be serving just that, with plans for options that are a little bit more traditional than the trapizzino." - Serena Dai
"Stefano Callegari — the Italian chef credited for inventing the wildly popular 'pizza sandwich' known as the trapizzino — will open his first NYC pizzeria in Soho this September. La Rossa will serve Roman-style pizza al taglio as well as round pizzas and other Roman dishes. Located at 267 Lafayette St., near Prince Street, the 32-seat pizzeria will be an homage to the Roman foods Callegari has built his reputation on. His cacio e pepe pizza will be on the menu, along with the “testa rossa” pizza made with Campari-marinated mozzarella. The NYC Roman pizza scene just keeps on growing. In addition to the Roman-style pizzas that have been popping up all over NYC — like with the recent openings of Mani in Pasta, PQR, and Alla Palla — La Rossa will serve various antipasti, salads, and suppli, fried snacks from Rome. It will also be open for breakfast and have an outdoor dining space." - Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya
