A different style of ordering and menu delivering this Mexican Salvadorian restaurant is definitely a place for authentic styles of breakfast from Latin American culture and American fusions.

As we walked to an old neighborhood familiar with my host and friend Mauricio, we shared anecdotal stories of growing up in the Mission. It's been around for some time, and if they've changed anything It's mostly some of the service staff. But their recipe and their flavors are constant and predictively good. If you enjoy pupusas, they have a nice plate that gives you all that you might want, including rice and beans! We order a variety of salvadorean dishes and were a bit disappointed with them. their yuca was too dry and their curtido that looked like a Salas and salsa too watery their pupusas were the only thing that kind of made up for the rest but dislike the idea of being served pupusas with beans 👎 their nuegados were a fiasco not authentic Salvadorean food not planning on going back to this place again

We were actually trying to go to another place down the road which was closed and saw a queue outside this place so we stood in the queue to see what the big deal was. The food was amazing. Very simple and wholesome. I tried Pupusas ( cheese and beans) here for the first time and loved it. Also ordered chicken burrito (which I didn't like too much, but then I generally don't like rice in the burrito anyway and there was too much rice in there for me). Also ordered chicken with onion and loved that. Do try the tamarindo. Will definitely be going back when I'm in SF.

I had platanos and tamales. They were delicious, the platanos serving was huge! I had them the next day for breakfast too. Quick and friendly service. Highly recommend

La Santaneca’s Cheese Pupusas are appetizing. Their Chuletas de Puerco and Maranon drink make a well rounded meal. Pleasant ambience and attentive staff.

I was first introduced to this spot five to six years ago, and through the years it’s left quite an impression. Being of Salvadoran descent and having tried out different spots across the Bay, La Santaneca is the hands down the best pupusas place I’ve ever had the pleasure of going to. The flavor and love put into these pupusas (in my case bean and cheese w/ rice flour) are incomparable. Know in advance that the restaurant is cash only, and that wait times are a little longer to ensure that perfect taste.

My favorite restaurant for popusas! Great taste, amazing service. Sometimes you have to wait a bit to be seated, but it’s definitely worth it. And it’s very affordable.

A small place, very clean and a nice calm atmosphere from the busy street out outside. I ordered a pupusa and huevos entomatados. I really enjoyed all of it. Good flavor. My only issue was the plantains tasted a little over ripe. The staff all had smiles and were friendly. From ever in this area again, I definitely would come back Parking can be tricky, of course

Came in for lunch around 11:30am. Was quiet when we got there. Plenty of seating but one table was left unclean. Notice 2 employees on their break, a server saw us came in and sat down, walked passed us a few times but didn't bring us a menu. My friend who have been here plenty of times, knew where the menus were and got it for us. The server than came to us and took our order. We both ordered pupusa plate which comes with 2 pupusa, rice & refined beans on the side. I ordered revueltas con frijol (mix pork beans and cheese) and he just cheese. And 2 horchata, which was really delicious and refreshing. As fresh as the pupusas are, I'm not impressed. Pupusas we're hot and soft, other than that .... The plate looked boring, beans didn't have much flavor nor did the rice. Didn't seem like my pupusa had much or any meat in it beside just cheese. The side of sauce they gave us wasn't even enough. This is one of my friends favorite pupusa place but I wouldn't come back.

CASH ONLY. Delicious food and great decor. Reasonable prices. Casamiento was fantastic. Revuelta pupusa was delicious as was the curtido. Would def have again.

As I said in my older review, the pupusas are great here, but I recently tried their carne asada which is one of my favorite meals, and also very good. I got carne asada, rice, beans, and a generous helping of tortillas.

I am 47 years old, and I have been coming to this restaurant since I was 10 years old, and they have the most delicious Salvadorian food that I have ever tasted, and the quality of their taste has not changed for the last 37 years since I have been coming here.

In the heart of the Mission District. The food was exceptional. It felt like my abuelita was making it in the back. Simple, but very, very good, especially on a cold day. We got Revueltas (pork + cheese), cheese only, and the chicharron (pork only) pupusas with the amazing rice and beans. We also ordered a side of fried plantains, which was enough for 3-4 people. I really loved the food here and the vibe of the customers. A lot of regulars and like everyone knew each other. Highly recommend.

Being greeted when you come into a restaurant is a delight. But when you're greeted into a restaurant that feels like a home the experience is entirely different. La Santaneca de la mission has a calm homey atmosphere that feels like you're being hosted at someone's grandmothers house. The wonderful seating and prime location of being in the mission is amazing because after a day out and about you can unwind with Salvadoran flavors and textures. I had pupusas for the first time here and I've been on a mission to find the best ones, because the subtle flavors and textures make for such an incredible eating experience!

There was a hair in my food on top of the pupusas being basically flavorless. Not worth the lack of parking to eat here.

My husband was craving salvadoran authentic food. We decided to give la Santaneca a try because why not. San Francisco is known to have some of the best salvadoran food. We were a party of 6 and we were told we couldn't move the tables and chairs to accommodate. We had to sit apart. No big deal. We ordered our food. Be prepared to wait some time as they make their food fresh. I ordered 3 pupusas and my husband ordered a sopa de pata (beef soup). My pupusas came out 15 minutes before my husband's food. I was almost done with my food when his came out. If I would have waited my food would have gone cold. I also ordered an atol de elote (corn drink) which was really yellow. The original one is more on the cream color side and is not overly sweet. The pupusas were soooooo good. They are really good. You definitely need to try those if you ever visit la Santaneca. The restaurant is an older restaurant. If you wish to use the restroom you must go through the kitchen and then the bathroom. I don't think that is really hygienic. Overall I really liked the pupusas but not how the serving of food is and the flexibility of sitting with a big party. It is not for parties of over 5.

It's good to want Salvadoran food when visiting the mission because they have it. The pupusa and the chicken-onion plates that we ordered were both excellent. It makes it even more appealing that the restaurant is right across the street from the BART station. I will repeat. BB

The best pupusas in the city. Hard to find parking though and they are always busy but it is well worth the wait.

Long time customer, it pains me to complain on my peoples, but damn... i ordered 6 pupusas and only got a small bag of curtido. Highly disappointed, time to find a new pupuseria.

I've been going here since the 90s. It's been awhile since my last visit but I was glad I went back. The food was just as delicious as ever. I got the pupusa plate and it was amazing. The rice was so good and so were the beans. I got the corn tamal also and it was amazing. Love this place. Friendly staff. Great place, love the remodel. Great for one person or for a date. Very yummy.

Very delicious pupusas! I've been here in the pass and just hadn't been back but I'm glad I did. Locations: Mission & 24th. I love the Mission, so many place to eat at. Since it is the Mission there's people from all walks of life. Ambiance: Bright, decorated properly (no overkill on wall decor or color). Casual and 1 gender neutral bathroom. Ok size inside but a bit of a challenge for larger groups but doable. Food: Que delicia. We ordered plátanos con frijoles, yucca con Chicharron and pupusas revueltas and 1 Chicharron con frijoles. Beans were delicious, plantains could've been more ripe but they were good & the sour cream....mmmmm yummy! Pupusas were a good size and tasty, filler just enough, curtido was good too. Yucca was perfect and 1 complain I wouldn't have added the sauce on the yucca con Chicharron but that's just me. Other than that it was delicious and will order again with sauce on side. :)

Came back here with the seven year old in tow. Food is still as good as I remember. Service remains friendly. Pupusas are great, fried plantains are delicious. Prices remain reasonable. Review from seven year old: "I agree with my mom"

First of all, you know the food is going to be amazing when you see the grandmas and grandpas eating there. My general rule of thumb. The food was indeed delicious! I've never had Salvadorian food before. The service was amazing and my party was seated quickly. It got busy a bit after 12pm on a Thursday afternoon. The interior has a great touch of canvas and it felt as if I'm in Salvador. I would 100% go back!

From the moment you enter this very classical restaurant with all its decorations guiding you through El Salvador beautiful countryside and pick your rest artifacts you greeted and seated promptly and welcomed. Once you're ready to order from a bath a variety of food your heart is pounding to realize all your favorites are found in this menu. From the classic cheese pupusa to a variety of other great meals like the typical turkey sandwich hard to find. I was pleasantly surprised of how delicious and it reminded me of my childhood experience in El Salvador eating for the first time this sandwich. The ambience here is peaceful and white entertaining. I would highly come and recommend this place and continue eating all those wonderful delicacies that they have in the menu. Come and enjoy.

Cash only. Tasty for the whole family if you can find a place to park or Bart in. Right by the Bart station. Comfortable booths but they run out of seating peak times. Small bathroom in back through the kitchen. Authentic Salvadoran food. There's more than just Pupusas. Grandma loved the sopa.de res. We all had nacatamales and Pupusas revueltas. We ordered a dozen nacatamales to go to freeze for later as there's none in Clovis near Fresno. Horchata or coffee to drink.

We ordered the fish soup and it was very salty. To add on to that, we have finished our beverages before finished the food and not one time did they ask if we wanted a refill or another drink. They gave us each 1 napkin for the full meal and honestly the guy working there seemed like he was just over it. They give you bland responses when asking for anything. Didn't really feel welcomed nor was the food amazing. The pupusas I will say are phenomenal.

For about 7 bucks, you can get 2 pupusas with bean, pork and cheese and be super full and out the door! Came here after a trip out and about and wasn't looking for a full heavy lunch but something still filling and delicious My friend took me here and recommended the pupusas and raved about them and tbh, I have a love hate relationships with it. The menu is pretty extensive and it is a mixture of Mexican and El Salvadorian dishes and I was scanning to see other items I wanted to get but I kept reverting back to the pupusas so I gave in and order the options with bean, pork and cheese. There is a min order of 2 pupusas per order and if you want extra cabbage, it's less than a buck (we ordered extra!) The pupusas came hot and fresh but not burn my tongue hot. The cheese oozes out as I cut into it and steam just escapes through. The pork really helps with the flavoring (I find cheese can be overpowering sometimes ) and all the flavors just compliment each other. The cabbage salad wasn't super acidic but it gave a nice ting and crunch factor to the dish and as I ate, I was piling more and more of the salad to my bite (my mouth just salivate as I'm recalling the meal Service was pretty smooth and the servers were attentive, even when it was a full house Definitely would come back here!

We have loved this place for the last 24 years and go from far away to buy pupusas, because they are really good. The last time we called to place an order they were very disrespectful; first , they did not answer the phone after I tried several times, then I used my husbands phone to call and they answered it, but completely ignored the call and left us on hold for like 10 minutes . I do not understand, we have been loyal customers for a long time and do not deserve to be treated that way, it feels like they ignored us on purpose

I ordered two pupusas, one bean and cheese and the other cheese with loroco, which was $15.75 for two - they don't take credit cards, so be sure to come prepared with cash. It was about a 15 minute wait for food since it was still close to lunchtime on a Sunday. They do have a bathroom you can use. Although it's not all that cheap, I did feel both pupusas were large and filling, so the price felt reasonable for that. The loroco has more of a bitter tang to it while the bean and cheese pupusa was sweeter, and for both the cheese was a strong taste.

Pretty good pupusas. You can taste that they're fresh and the curtido taste fresh. Not that old water soggy old curtido most of these street vendors carry. Pay attention to that wherever you try pupusas. Has to be freshly enough to where you bite into the curtido and the cabbage and carrots are crunchy. Not soggy like soggy cereal The service takes a little longer. I understand that they're busy but does feel good if they would check more often if you need any refills. They don't come around that quickly that often. and that one cup of water or soda or natural juice you order or get. Will make you more thirsty. So again expect a wait on that sometimes. The ambience of the place can be packed like sardines in a can. Small place and there tiny tables. Sometimes this place is packed and you'll be waiting for a table. It could be a while too. But all in all it's good the yuka and chicharrón is my favorite. Also pan con pavo is another good try. The soup in the cup is good but dip your pan con pavo as you bite into it because the soup in the cup is a little on the salty side. But still good. The horchata is Salvadorian taste. Not like the Mexican restaurants. So taste for me was my favorite but some people are different and have an opposite opinion. Lengua en salsa is another good tasting dish I recommend if you don't mind cow tongue. But again some people like it some think that's gross. To me it was the best. and im picky when I try tongue. There fried bananas with sour cream and some sugar sprinkled on top and that's to die for. Getting hungry now.

I can here on a Tuesday night for dinner and it was very easy to be seated. My table ordered the fried yuca, plantains, and different types of pupusas. I really wanted an horchata but they didn't have any. I have been here a few times before and their food is always good and stable. What I like best at this spot is that their prices are very reasonable! For example, the two pupusas + rice + beans was $10. Note: they only accept cash

Quality food, great value, brimming with locals. Really everything you can ask for from a neighborhood restaurant. I recently dined in and ordered the #19 Combanacion Salvadoreña, which comes with a Chile relleno with pork and a tamale with your choice of pork or chicken (I opted for the latter). It also comes with a side of rice, beans, sour cream, and a small salad. Both items were flavorful, but the Chile relleno in particular was a standout, and it was packed with meat. I also ordered a side of two pupusas with pork, cheese, and beans. The slaw that comes with the pupusas was also very fresh (can sometimes be a miss at other restaurants), as was the tomato sauce that comes on the side. Everything was tasty, well-seasoned, and great portion for what you pay (everything came to ~$25). I will definitely return, and I'd like to try their breakfast options next! (only served until 11:30a)

Cravings amazingly fulfilled!! Been craving for some good pupusas and since our go to pupusa place closed down in Redwood City, we have yet to find a new spot. Well, the wait is over! We discovered La Santaneca de La mission. It is in the mission district of downtown San Francisco. Parking is a challenge, street parking is available however and parking facilities in the area is accessible and walking distance from the restaurant. The restaurant from the outside is cute and authentic looking. When we entered, there was a big sign of Cash Only but not an issue since there's a ATM of Bank of America near by to get cash really quick. The host and server Josue was friendly and has a very calm and mellow vibe which was cool. There was no tables available and was full but we didn't wait long for a table to become available. The place is clean and appears to be sanitized. They have plenty of items to choose from on their menu but we settled in ordering Pupusas Carnitas and Rivuelto. We also ordered their Platano Fritos. Our food arrived in a reasonable time and the presentation is neat. The food tasted freshly made and absolutely Devine! It is super good!!! If you're in the area, you have to come to this place for some freshly made pupusas!

If you have come here and order one thing only, please order the PUPUSA! It is absolutely AH-MAH-ZING! We stopped here for breakfast and since I was in the mood for eggs that day, I ordered a scrambled egg/chorizo dish. We also ordered a steak dish and the pupusa revuelta. Portion size is huge so there will definitely be leftovers. My scrambled egg dish was very good. It came with a side of refried beans, which was tasty. I tried the steak and it was also very flavorful and tender. The steak dish came with a salad, rice, and beans. The highlight for me though was the pupusa revuelta. It was absolutely delicious. The pupusa was stuffed with meat and cheese. I've tried pupusas before but nothing quite like this one. Had I known it was this good, I would have only ordered the pupusa. We really enjoyed our breakfast and will be back again when in SF.

Had to leave this place a proper review since I was just let down by some pupusas in SJ. The first time I came here, it was a Sunday and it was PACKED. Like this is where the Salvis go after mass. I knew that was a good sign. These are the best pupusas I've ever had. The masa to filling proportion is just right and they always cook them perfectly (can't stand unevenly or too high grilled pupusas). The curtido is fresh and doesn't have that lightweight mildewy stench/taste. Growing up, our family would go to Las Palmas for pupusas, but Santaneca definitely took their spot.

Terrible Food, the Pupusas were nasty the cheese had too much Grease coming out of it. (soggy), El chicharrón was disgusting in flavor, later that Day I went to Twin Peaks and I didn't feel good after eating the pupusa so when I was up in the hill by Sutro tower, that pupusa had come back up and out, not the great experience, and for Definitely not come back, Do Not spending money here. Go at your own risk, I warned you.

PUPUSA REVIEW: Holy moly. $7 pupusas with rice and beans?! YES YES YES. I thought I could only get this deal in the South Bay outside of the city, but La Santaneca makes it accessible to feel full, not broke, and enjoy a warm meal in a neighborhood favorite. The only slight sad part is that there are only two veggie versions of pupusas, but that's perfect because their pupusa deal gives you two. I had the queso and loroco (wildflowers!) pupusas, which I highly recommend and will definitely order next time I come in. The loroco is a wildflower apparently, and the flavors are definitely more earthy and special however not empowering. The boys also got fried plantains which can be ordered as a side. Portions are huge and filling--my favorite! They serve water upon request and have juices and other drinks available. Almost everyone sitting inside that day we ate there (late lunch) was of Latinx background. I definitely felt like I was eating authentic food at a great price deal! The service was a bit slower than I expected, but the tables did always seem to be full. Servers were fast to take our orders, but the food cooking took longer than I thought. We definitely waited 20-25 minutes that day for our pupusa orders. Before we were seated, we had to wait about 8-10 minutes even during the middle of the day! They also have a cute restroom sign and very quaint decor. It makes me feel very at home. It's almost as good as my favorite pupusa place in the South Bay, but it stole my heart for being a great SF place for properly-priced-pupusas.

Coming from a Salvadoran women. The pupusas here are better than the motherland! It is a small spot & sometimes have a long wait time but worth it!!! The horchata here is so good as well as the plátanos. Anything you get here won't disappoint. Pupusas are $5 but they are worth it, they are a good size & filled with so much flavor!

First experience with Salvadoran food and it is close enough to Spanish and Mexican food. This place is filled with locals so they must provide authentic Salvadoran food. Of course i have to have the well-known pupusas, prices are extremely reason $2 - $3 per pupusas with a minimum order of two per customer. I arrived just before the lunch rush and waited 10-15 minutes. The place is small and busy, need to have a better system or sign in system for a table. Few customers just walked by us wanting to sit in the next available table. I order two pork pupusas, it is thick tortilla stuffed with savory ground mesh pork, it also comes with cheese and bean, or pork and bean. The texture of the pupusas is chewy and doughy the pork itself has a natural meaty taste, but not crazy about pork finely meshed. The rice is light and fluffy. Very interesting, I would say it like quesadilla with a thicker doughy crust. Interesting food.

Some of the best pupusa in The Mission!! I dare say it, may be even in the entire SF Bay Area. This is the real deal, as good and authentic as it could get! La Santaneca have 2 location, another one in Bernard and they both get crazy packed. If you are not familiar with pupusa, they are a traditional Salvadoran dish of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with a savory filling and served with coleslaw. You can never go wrong with the Revueltas (pork & cheese) or Chicharron (pork). If you are looking for vegetarian options, there's also the Queso (cheese) or Frijoles (beans). Not only are they filling, they are very affordable too! At only $2 - $2.25 each, order a few and pair it with some rice & beans or a sopa (soup) and you're solid. It's one of the tastier and more affordable meal you can still get in the city! Aside from pupusa, they also serve up other traditional Salvadoran dishes including sopa, tamales, fried yuca/plantains and desserts. Take a look at their drink menu too, they have some tasty juices as well. While service is always friendly, do expect a wait and service may be a bit slow, especially during lunch hours. Don't forget to bring cash too, cash only.

The pork, cheese, bean Pupusa was amazing. The salsa sauce made it even better that it already was. I had the entree of grilled prawns with garlic and mushroom. It was in a herbed clear sauce which had a scampi-like gloss and sheen which suggested a good amount of fats in it. The sides of refried beans and seasoned rice rounded out what was a truly delicious meal!

Horrible experience. 50 minute wait for food. the place wasn't full. my drinks took 30 minutes to get to me. Waiters weren't polite. Bad experience, okay food, long wait and bad service.

Note: Cash Only First heard about this place from an Uber driver a couple months ago who swore up and down by this place. He lives far away, but sometimes on the weekends his whole family will make a trek to SF just to eat here. Okay I'm sold. Fast forward a couple months, and I finally had a chance to come here with a friend for dinner Saturday around 5:30. The place was full and there was no place to write your name, so we just stood in the entrance area for 10-15 minutes until we got seated. We shared some pupusas and also a larger plate as well. Their pupusas range from $2 to $2.50, or you can order their pupusa combo for $7, which comes with two pupusas with rice and beans. The fillings they offer are mostly some combination of pork, cheese, and beans, though they did have one with cheese and loroco, which is a type of Salvadorian flower. According to wiki, a pupusa is a traditional Salvadoran dish of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with a savory filling. I've never had one before and didn't know what to expect, but I loved the chicharron pupusa I got with pork only. They're definitely on the smaller side, but the chicharron filling was generous and perfectly seasoned. If I had been hungrier, I definitely would have ordered more. I only took a couple bites of the larger shared plate--carne guisado (stewed beef with vegetable)--as I wasn't too hungry, but I was very impressed with how tender and flavorful the beef was. For $10.75, you get a generous portion of beef, rice, beans, and veggies. I loved my meal here but want to come back again when I am hungrier for the full experience.

They get a 3 stars because while their pupusas may save them, their tamales, although big, where pretty unsatisfying and frankly disappointing. Got three dozen for about $200 bucks to go for Christmas dinner just to be extremely disappointed at La Santaneca and the tamales they sent out the door. The lack of flavor was just sad, missing key ingredients like potatoes and green olives, some even lacked the garbanzo beans. You would think that if you ran out of ingredients they would tell you they have no more instead of just pushing out something sad and unsatisfactory, but I guess that not the case. Stay clear of their tamales and sadly their menudo aswell. They failed with their menudo last time I tried it, it was a bit slimy unfortunately.

Looking for a departure from burritos and tacos in the Mission?! This is your spot, especially for a delicious bowl of comforting Salvadoran soup with a side of very reasonably priced papusas. I Walked in here on a rainy day looking for something comforting - the beef soup hit the spot! Really nicely cooked carrots, squash, corn and other veggies in a light beef broth with an ample portion of beef. Dunk the freshly made tortillas they give you in the delicious soup if you like! Also gad the bean and cheese and cheese with Salvadoran flower papusas. They are a generous size and come with a tangy side of shredded veggies.

The best pupusa ever. We came here Sunday lunch time. This place can be packed but we we're lucky . We didn't wait and got a table but right after we sat down, 3 groups came in and made a line. Come here early! I got beef and cheese pupusa. Ohhhhh so good. I got 2 pupusas but I could get more! My BF got Chili relleno. That was decent. You should get pupusas for sure. Nice place to try your first El Salvadorian foods.

I'm blown away, the best Pupusas I've ever tried! I am vegetarian and got bean and cheese and it's soo juicy and flavorful, with a lot of gooey filling, delicious crispy on the outside, not dry or too much flour! best if you eat it right away fresh! A lot of places are really skimpy on the fillings and you mostly feel like you paying for a lot of dough, or getting a pancake with some cheese, but not this place! Even the Curtido (cabbage slaw) and hot sauce they add lots of spices and seasoning to it so it's not so plain. The owner Guillermo is really nice guy too. La Santaneca pupusa is SO GOOD I really wish I tried them sooner! You can really taste the skill and passion in the food, you will not be disappointed!

My opinion not worth 5 stars! Place itself is really small maybe ten tables at the most. If you do eat hear consider having a audience of people standing by the door watching you eat and ready to take your table any second you get up. Food was ok but not worth the price . I can say their are tastier Salvadoran restaurants basically in every block on mission and have better pupusas and the price is about 1.50 to 2.00 a pupusa . Another negative for me was that it doesn't matter if you order two pupusas or five they only give you a small portion of curtido which is the cabbage slaw that goes with it and if you want more it's extra $$! Seems like Their is a up charge for everything hear! Also keep in mind that if you order to go it's an up charge so I would reconsider taking out. And it is a cash only place so keep that in mind as well.. As for me I won't be coming back again but it was good trying it and giving you my honest opinion.

Loved this place for Eva Great food. Especially for my Pupusas I grew up here always eating here.

I have been frequenting this business since I was a child and the quality of the food remains excellent and very consistent. Although there is no indoor dining you can make your orders for pickup and fortunately this last time I ordered was in a very timely manner which I love. This small location gets really packed so when dine in is open it's generally a bit of a wait, but very well worth it
