Best Restaurants in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Tucked into a corner of this grocery store/panaderia/carniceria is one of the Bull City’s best taco joints. Options include suadero, barbacoa, chicken tinga, choriqueso, and more. There are also a selection of tamales, burritos, huaraches, sopas, and more. For those who like to do their grocery shopping first thing in the morning, the taqueria has a breakfast menu with items like chilaquiles and huevos rancheros." - Matt Lardie

12 Best Taco Stops in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"La Superior is a supermarket, carnicería (butcher shop), Mexican bakery, and, tucked into the far corner, a taqueria. Fillings include chorizo, chicken tinga, suadero (braised beef brisket), and pork carnitas. The pork al pastor tacos are a true star here, and for a slight upcharge a braised lamb taco is also available. All tacos are served street-style with onions, lime wedges, sauces, and a blistered jalapeno." - Matt Lardie

I’ve eaten at this place off and on for about 10 years when I’m in town visiting. I usually like their menudo but this time is was served not hot enough, was a little bit greasy, and was missing the condiments I like (oregano, chopped fresh jalapenos, and the spicy salsita). Also the potato tacos dorados were bland. Finally, the salsa bar seems to be all Herdez jarred salsa.

When I'm in the mood for traditional hispanic food this is my go to place..they have a great assortment of grocery items and fresh cooked items. Let's not forget the bakery! I load up on the cookies..they are my fave! They also have a great selection of herbal teas at very reasonable prices. Go check them out!

Having spent enough time in Mexico, I feel back there again as soon as I enter La Superior. The cafeteria and bakery alone are worth the trip there. You've got to check this place out if you want authenticity. Go with an appetite.

La Superior, is indeed a superior grocery store in Durham area, with wide choices of groceries, meat, bread and delicious Mexican food. Its authentic menu is superb to taste and enjoy. This is one of my favorites in this area. People are also friendly and hospitable.

Variety of frozen chicken, fish, meat, pork products. And a supermarket offering bakery products, meals , drinks. Decent setting. Reasonable price.

When I picked this place I didn't realize it was a grocery store with a kitchen in the back and I admit I was skeptical at first. You have to wind your way through some isles and a bakery area and then the room opens up. It's full of tables and chairs that have seen better days. On the wall which houses the ordering counter and a window to the kitchen, you will find a smattering of laminated papers touting the daily specials. There is also a screen that cycles through the menu and pictures of various items. The lady working the counter spoke no English and couldn't figure our request for diet coke. After some vigorous gesticulations we managed to get everything sorted. She told us our number and we set down. After about 10 minutes our food came out. The meat was delicious and flavorful. The guac was awesome. The rice and beans were okay. My friend got a burrito the size of a baby's arm. This was also pretty good, but she said she will try something more exciting next time. TL;DR you should try do the thing.

Google
I love this place. It’s a taqueria, tortillería, panadería, supermercado, carnicería. All in one. Tacos tortas tamales sopes. You can send money here. Fresh tortillas. If you need authentic Hispanic ingredients, this is the place. Their fresh Crema Amarilla is delicious. Their homemade salsas taste amazing. Can you tell I love this place? For anyone wondering, they sell chicken feet here

Google
I lived in Mexico for almost 20 years and this is one of the first times I have ever visited a Hispanic grocery store that carries many of the items I was familiar with while living in Mexico including having an in-house Tortilleria and fresh homemade cheeses and chorizo. Their vegetables are incredibly fresh and reasonably priced and you simply can't go wrong shopping here!

Yelp
Everything was good. The service, and ambiance too. I'm coming back soon and try a slice of cake with my meal.

Yelp
I was very sad that these tacos did NOT live up to the expectations in my head. I tried the taco asada which they give you plain and you add the toppings at the taco bar. On its own, the meat did not have any flavor. I relied on the salsa verde which made them "just okay." The horchata was okay but not great.

Tingy L.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food with great customer service. I love that they have a self serve salsa station. The Horchata was delicious and made to perfection. The restaurant is constantly being cleaned up by the ladies

Yelp
This supermarket has a cafe and bakery inside. They make fresh corn tortillas and sell them by the pound in large or small stacks. The baked goods are fresh but a little dry for my taste. At the cafe, they make everything fresh. They also have a small salsa bar that has tasty, spicy varieties. My obsession are their tamales. Pork, chicken, chiles and cheese - all DEEEELICIOUS. it's a quick and easy meal and then pick up a few groceries after. Very cultural experience. I love it here.

Yelp
Love the authentic food here! Especially love their cabeza and tripa! Tacos are $2-4 depending on the type of protein. And, some other perks are: the people working here are so friendly, there are plenty of clean & spacious seatings, the kitchen is fast, and you get to pick up a concha at the pastry shop right next door, and then even do some snack shopping at the grocery store in the same building!

Yelp
La Superior is a great place to stop in and get a bite to eat or to restock your fridge and pantry. Their meats and bakery products are priced nicely and the variety of Latino/Hispanic cuts of meat are super!! Do yourself a favour and stop in!
google avatar

Yelp
I stopped in with the family for a late lunch. We split chilaquiles, two huraches, tacos, and rice & beans. The food is very good (not outstanding but solid) and reasonably priced. This place has it all. It's well worth checking them out.

Yelp
I must say this is my only and best experience visiting a Hispanic supermarket that is this huge in Durham. So many selection of goods from snacks, variety of meat at the butcher's, household objects, different cheeses and meats in the deli section from jamón to Oaxaca cheese, and freshly made chicharrones, masa for tamales, and FRESHLY MADE AND PACKED TORTILLAS TO GO!!! I am in love with this place because anything you ever want to cook Latin cuisine or unique foods you can't find anywhere else is here. I love the food court that serves authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh agua frescas. We went on the weekend and the place was packed but everyone was masked. Tables were distanced, but I wish they were distanced just a little more. They do have signs on table to tell you that the tables get cleaned and disinfected. However, if the staff is too busy, they may not get to it as quickly before someone else hogs the seat. Just an FYI!!! We kept an eye out on a table that was freshly cleaned before seating ourselves. Anyway, the food court food is banging. I got a champurrado to drink and it was nostalgic. The tacos had hot and juicy meat, fresh-tasting tortillas, and banging salsas. I had a tamale mole for the first time and it was so flavorful, I can just eat the masa by itself by the spoonful! If you want good food court food and grocery variety, come on by but just know it gets busy on the weekends.

Yelp
Cheap, safe, delicious, huge portions, Authentic. I have nothing to complain. If you like Mexican food, just go there and enjoy the simplest food experience.

Yelp
4 tacos packed with delicious protein and a medium horchata for less than $13 in this economy..?! Yes, please! The service was friendly and fast. The tacos just come with meat and there's a little condiment bar you can head to and add your own toppings. I only purchased my meal today so I I can't speak on the grocery store or bakery but everything looked very clean and organized.
google avatar

Yelp
Great please to do all your grocery shopping and an excellent restaurant to try out different foods! The bakery has some of the best breads I've ever tasted.

Yelp
What a hidden gem? I was actually looking for another Taco place and ended up coming here instead. It's a supermarket with everything! The kitchen includes a bakery and taqueria. I went with 3 tacos and an order of rice. I was very impressed with the quality. I was given a number and the food came out instantly. Shredded Beef Taco: This was my favorite! It was so tender and juicy. Steak Taco: Delicious but nothing special, just steak! Asada Taco: I was hoping more for flavor. Rice: This was the MVP! Tasted like fried rice. Super flavorful! Hot Sauce: Just enough heat without it being too overwhelming Overall, fantastic customer service!

Yelp
Great food and catering options. They are flexible and will served upwards of 100 people with ease.

Yelp
La superior is infact superior to all markets!!! This authentic Latin supermarket is the one of your dreams! Everything you need they have! Groceries, food, fresh cheese, meat, and delicious authentic food! The service is great and everything you could think of, they had. Organized, clean and smells Devine. The bakery was amazing. We stood for a while just in awe of their endless desert options. Everything was yummy vibes. I've been once and I plan on coming back. This was an epic experience and I advice anyone who wants to try authentic Latin food or deserts should come here!

Yelp
A huge grocery/bakery/produce/meat market/restaurant in an old car dealership. Totally intimidating from the outside, but very complete and friendly. Spanish skills or a translator will be needed to get your meal ordered. The food is good, but not nearly as flavorful as I was expecting from the other reviews. I got the al Pastor and Pollo Tonga, and doctores them up with the sauce bar, which is very complete. Even with Pico de Gallo and salsa verde, the meats still needed a bit of salt, but none was to be found. The fresh corn tortillas were good, but I'm more a fan of Cort flour tortillas and cooked to new from corn. Doubled up, they overwhelmed the stuffing of the tacos. I'm bought a store-made cup of flan from the bakery area, but it was pretty tasteless and stiff. There are other Places here in Durham that offer a better flavor to me.
google avatar

Tammy H.

Yelp
There is a food court inside the Mexican grocery store. The horchata was great! The taco al pastor -- not so much; the meat was tough and overcooked, and did not have enough seasoning. It's a convenient choice though if you're already planning on doing some grocery shopping, and is also located right next to some delicious smelling freshly baked pastries that could be a good accompaniment.
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Their cafe food is delicious. I like the barbacoa (barbecue) tacos and the tamales are scrumptious. They are doing take out during the pandemic - I'm so glad they're still open! The Agua Fresca is delicious - I've had the Horchata and the strawberry. Spouse just brought home take out. We had red tamales and they were as good as usual. No salsa bar. Spouse said they had the cafe cordoned off from the rest of the store - using the typically-unused side-door. Everyone was wearing masks. So good to have tamales from La Superior again!

Yelp
I love this place. It reminds me a lot of my home town in New Mexico. It looks a little rough around the edges, especially with the fence with the barbed wires and the security guard out in front. But let me tell you guys, this place is utterly amazing if you give it a chance! It's a shop that sells meats, produce, and a lot of Mexican goodies. It's like any Mercado but a lot cleaner! When you enter and keep walking straight, you'll end up in the bakery area. That make fresh tortillas and bakes goodies everyday! You can buy tortillas by the pound and you can really smell that they are being made fresh! If you go further back, you'll find the restaurant. They have a menu on digital screens with photos. The prices are cheap and the portions are generous. Each person I was with was about $10 for a full plate of food! Also they have horchata and many other Mexican drinks at around $2/3 per large container. They don't put too much ice in it (SCORE) and the refill is $1. YOU HEARD ME CORRECTLY. $1. I will definitely be going back for my salsa, guacamole, tortillas, baked goods, and food. Basically everything was charming about this shop! I cannot emphasize how much people should come and try it out! If you haven't been, please do yourself the favor to try authentic Mexican cuisine at this location.

Yelp
If you want authenticity go here. Their food is delicious, prices are reasonable. This is the place to go if you have a large family!

Yelp
Best taco's in the Triangle hands down!!! Affordable and delicious! Definitely recommend their beef tongue and lamb tacos.

Yelp
Another Good Mexican Restaurant located in a Supermarket Folks!!! Now it's is much larger than it appears. Parking is ok but can get Busy due to the Supermarket shoppers!!! The Food is very Tasty and Prices are low compared to the Chain Restaurants!!! I always try the tacos but other choices look good too!!! Try it for yourself and you probably will find something you really like!!!

Yelp
This place is incredible and there is a place in my heart for it even though I no longer live in the area. I have only tried the tacos, but the steak and lengua meat options are cooked so well and filled with so much flavor that sometimes I still daydream and can taste them. My favorite condiment is the green sauce, which has pieces of avocado inside. From my experience, these are the tastiest and most authentic tacos I have ever tried, not to mention also very affordable. I would highly recommend giving this place a visit!

Yelp
Love coming to this place! We have lunch and do our grocery shopping here! Meat is so fresh ! Highly recommend it

Yelp
This is one of our closest grocery stores, and if you are obsessed with Mexican food like I am, then having this place a few minutes away is amazing! First, they have a huge Mexican bakery section and a tortilla maker! We always get our tortillas here and you order by the pound and they come out all fresh and warm and amazing and they freeze well too! And we always get at least one of their in store made salsas which are spicy, but we love it! If you are nopales (cactus) fans like we are also, this place always has some which I don't see at most markets. But the other real reason to come here, is their restaurant inside the grocery store--SO GOOD! You can eat there or take it to go, and they make a mean torta! Their tacos are pretty solid, they pack everything with lots of meat if you get a meat filling, their sopes are incredible, a different style quesadilla than I am used to, but still very good, really you can't go wrong! It does help if you speak a little Spanish going here, but everyone is so friendly and you can tell they all are just happy that you are in their store!

Yelp
Really good, authentic Mexican food. It's kind of hole in the wall inside a supermarket. It's my favorite.
google avatar

Aguilar A.

Yelp
Again I like this place , great food products and tortillas but yesterday again I was buying some meat and vegetables and they were charging me almost triple the price of the meat so please make sure to check what they label on the meat department so you don't get charged double or triple the normal price don't know if this was another mistake or is this something typical scam , please check what you are paying

Yelp
I feel bad writing this review without any pictures. Seriously, I could describe how amazing the food here is, and still do it no justice without the pictures. First of all, they have many different kinds of meat (in addition to your usual chicken, barbacoa and carnitas). I usually like to get the beef tongue, beef cheek, suadero or lamb. And wow, they really load up the meats for you. It's almost as if the two tortillas they have per taco is for you to make two tacos out of all that meat they give you. Remember to go to the taco bar and load up on the salsas. They really give a kick and round out the flavors. It's not just all tacos though. I love their gorditas, which are like arepas filled with meat and refried beans and queso. They fry it so well that the outside is slightly crunchy, with a soft pillowy texture inside. And of course, load this up with salsa as well. They call out your number in Spanish, by the way, so make sure you listen carefully if you don't Spanish!

Yelp
Even though it's a tiny bit hard to figure out how to order your first time there, the food is super fresh and all made to order. Once you enter the bigger grocery store (housed in the home of an old car dealership), keep walking straight until you get into the bread area and then turn right. Once you're in the taqueria area, scan the menu boards and the picture items on their large electronic boards, make a selection and then get your number. If you want an aquafresca or fruit or tamales, order those as well and then walk to your immediate left to give that station your ticket. The food comes out pretty quickly and is always delicious. It's sort of strange that you can't get any chips with your meal, but they are homemade and come with a side order of guacamole or beans or rice. I've had almost all of the meats in both taco, sope and gordita form and most are really good (especially love the lengua and the pastor). The tacos dorados are especially excellent too and the meat platters are usually solid. Other than a really greasy carne asada and an overly chewy pork chop, everything I've had there has been flawless. And finally don't forget the salsa bar. Escabeche, pico, 3-4 types or salsa, cilantro and onion -- all fresh and all great. The only pain in the butt part is that there are no places to put the salsa bar items unless you either beg the folks behind the counter for little containers or you get your food to go and load up on the less saucy items in that container.
google avatar

Jeremy A.

Yelp
You can get just about anything you want mexican food wise and being from San Diego I can tell you everything is legit. I got the Chorizo Quesadilla and Carne Asada Tacos and they were great. Im looking forward to going back when I can shop for groceries and grab another meal. Make sure you are looking for a huge building that doesnt totally look like a grocery store and not a store front.
google avatar

Mayra S.

Yelp
This is a great place to eat at and I love how authentic the food tastes. The gorditas de asada are a must and so are the tacos. Great place to eat at and not expensive.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem for sure! Used to be an auto mechanic building that was turned into a Mexican grocery store with attached food court and bakery. Fast forward to the more important topic: review of their food. Ordered types of tacos- al pastor (seasoned pork), lingua (beef tongue), and borrego (lamb). All 3 were amazing!! For me, borrego stood out the most! What made it even better was their fresh made tortillas. Definitely not the type you'll find at regular supermarket. They also sell their tortillas in bulk. Within a span of 10 mins while I enjoyed 3 tacos, there were probably 6 customers buying 50-100 stacks of fresh tortillas! Will be going back again to try other items on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. Located in the back of a grocery store, you walk in and get a food court vibe. There's cases of pastry cases, a counter of people making tostadas, etc. But if you keep walking back into the room you will see a counter where you place your order and a menu on the wall. There are photos that flash by as well as a still menu of various options for tacos, quesadillas, etc. I saw someone walk by with a tasty looking lunch, so I looked at the photos until I identified what they must have gotten- the enchiladas! My mom decided the chilaquiles sounded good. We went to the counter and struggled a bit to order from the Spanish-speaking cashier. No complaints, at all! The fact that we struggled a bit communicating just made us feel like we were going to get an authentic meal. My mom said she'd like steak with her chilaquiles and that seems to raise a concern, so the cashier called over another employee- who also didn't speak English! Needless to say, what she ended up with wasn't quite what she expected but it was still delicious and we were understanding that this was par for the course of choosing an authentic place. The food itself was amazing! My enchiladas had a delicious green sauce that was pretty spicy, but so tasty! Oh, and the salsa bar was great, too, even though there wasn't a sneeze guard and seemed like it could have been a little more hygienic. My mom ended up with delicious chilaquiles (same green sauce as my enchiladas) and a huge quantity of tender steak. The portions were huge for the prices. Oh, and we each got horchata which was delicious and so sweet. We had to wipe our own table off, and you definitely bus your own table at the end, but as long as you know that going in it's no problem. I'd definitely stop back in!

Yelp
I've lived in Texas. Arizona, and Cali for most of my life. Was looking for the best mexican place nearby. Was amazing. Best corn tortillas ever. Gordidtas was solid. Homemade salsas were great. Also hing around the attached grocery store. Decent prices. Only issue. No one speaks English so better brush up on your survival Spanish. 8*)

Yelp
La Superior is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants (or more a food court haha?) in Durham. It definitely offers some of the most authentic Mexican food around town. You can find your typical meats here, but if you're in the mood for something adventurous, the ox tongue is so tender and flavorful! They also have whole fish which is not easy to find in most smaller Mexican restaurants. Everything I've gotten there so far is fresh, tasty, served fast and also affordable. If this is your first visit, I would recommend getting tacos since you get to try a variety of meats and can always get seconds if you like a particular meat :) The restaurant is within a supermarket that sells all groceries and also fresh made pastries, cheeses and tortillas. Make sure you get some flan to go because they're REALLY good!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Heads up, there are two locations very close to one another. This location does not take orders over the phone. Very authentic Mexican restaurant located inside old car dealership turned into a Mexican grocery store. Food was fresh with a condiments/salsa bar. Be warned, the salsas are very spicy. Majority of the orders do not come with rice and beans but you can order them as sides. The wait was a little long and had a lot of Spanish people eating so I knew the food would be good. It is literally a hole in the wall. Not the best looking on the inside, not the best looking on the outside, but the food is good. Do not come here expecting Tex-Mex, come expecting authentic Mexican cuisine. I ordered the Gorditas which is like a soft shell with meat, cheese, and beans on the inside.
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
La Superior by far, is one of my favorite Mexican places around Durham. Not only does it cater to a specifically Hispanic crowd with the attached grocery store, but also brings international clientele with its offerings of fresh meats. I usually stick to tacos, although their offerings of fish and meats are always stellar. The last time I had three tacos, al pastor, carne asado, and pulled chicken, and they were all incredibly tender and flavorful. It may not seem like much from the outside, but this sure is a hidden gem in Durham. If you don't mind the no-frills attitude of eating inside a supermarket, this is a place for you to visit.

Yelp
"Whoah-- excellent Mexican food, super-cheap!" I saw Andrew D gave this 5 stars and knew it HAD to be great! This appears to be a grocery store from the front, and indeed, it does have a pretty decent sized one there with typical US and Central American goodies. But we came inside to try the taqueria. My review is based on the taqueria. You order at a counter, and wait for your number to be called, but you can watch the chefs making the food behind some windows. Positives: + Very, very cheap. Tacos were $1.50 each, giant burritos were $4.50, huge tortas were $6. + Great selection of Mexican goodies. In addition to the items noted above, they had tostadas, tamales, quesadillas, and much, much more. They have a nice salsa bar set up. There are tons of aguas de frescas, like horchata, piña, guanabana, fresa-- 20 oz for $1.50, larger $2. And of course, there's the whole bakery and dessert section with various related goodies (e.g., flan, puddings). + Taste. We were quite happy with our food. I had the asada torta, and it was excellent-- pretty similar in quality to my favorite local one (at La Vaquita). My son had the carne asada tacos, and the meat was great (especially with some of their salsas). The horchata was excellent-- one of the best I've had in the area, too, and the fresa (strawberry) version was good for anyone who wants something sweet (my daughter loved this). + Friendly. They were quite patient with us even though we took forever to order and were clearly a bit confused/ overwhelmed overall since it was our first time here. A few of the employees didn't know English (and I don't know Spanish), but they were patient and helpful nonetheless. Negatives: - Relatively clean, but not for the nitpicky. Several of the tables could have used a good spraying and wiping down, though there were people constantly sweeping to clean the floors. Bathroom wasn't well stocked, etc. - Trivial: Very hard to understand the numbers being called with the echo-y microphone. Synopsis: DEFINITELY plan to come back. Super-cheap, very tasty, lots of options, desserts in-store. Loved it.

Yelp
The Taqueria benefits from the high volume of product the the bakery and the "tortillaria" pump out - my Gordita shells were fresh and yet uniformly constructed, and it looked like they were moving through a lot of fresh bread. (The Tienda this is attached to is like the Wal-Mart of Tiendas.) The barbacoa was decent; I asked the guy which meat was his favorite and he said Asada - and THAT was excellent. So, next time it's gotta be Asada Torta on that fresh bread.

Mercedes V.

Yelp
Great for groceries, panadería, fresh corn tortillas, queso, tamales, and sit down meal! Love picking up tamales here that are Mexico City style, and those are often hard to find.
google avatar

Veronica C.

Yelp
This place has the best asada tacos I've had since I've been in Durham!! I've been a few places and I consider myself to be somewhat of a foodie, but they've been lackluster in comparison!! Everything is so fresh and well seasoned! Not to mention an awesome toppings bar. $2 per taco and you can fix them up how you like. I would say that you should at least know how to count in Spanish since they call out your order number in Spanish. There is also a grocery store when you initially enter, but I haven't ventured around that part. All in all, the food is awesome and the prices are great!
google avatar

Yelp
As a non Spanish speaker this place is intimidating. That said, holding up fingers works in both English and Spanish. This place is well worth overcoming the language barrier. Absolutely spectacular authentic Mexican food. You can even buy homemade fresh tortillas to go on the way out.
google avatar

Erin D.

Yelp
Authentic cuisine. So tasty. It's nothing fancy and the location is annoying if you have to turn left onto Roxboro St (the light tends to rotate through several times befugte actually turning green), but it's not the restaurant's fault and it's well worth it! You can tell the corn tortillas are homemade and I absolutely love the cheese and chorizo quesadilla. But really everything is good and the toppings are so fresh! I literally crave their food.
google avatar

Dock H.

Yelp
Good authentic Mexican!!! If you're in the area and want some really good, authentic, Mexican food; La Superior Carniceria should be high on your list. VERY good prices and taste that doesn't disappoint. One thing to note, you may need help ordering if your Spanish isn't so good. :-) I love this place!
google avatar

Brandon P.

Yelp
I live in Fayetteville, but do not mind the 90 drive up once in a while for this quality of food. Like other mentioned, this place is definitely not upscale and English is not the language norm at this place. It is in a Latin supermarket where you can also buy delicious cheeses and fresh mole. The tacos here are stuffed full with meat unlike other places. Finally the salsa bar is amazing

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food attached to a large Mexican grocery store/supermarket. The food was delicious, cheap, and I wanted to order a million different things. They have a large agua fresca menu with many different fruits and flavors, as well as a menu of entrees and tacos, quesadillas, etc similar to many other authentic Mexican restaurants in the area. One difference I noticed though was that many items were translated into English as well, which was much appreciated. There is also a separate part of the cafeteria dedicated to desserts and other cool-looking goodies. The supermarket itself is also worth walking around. Lots of fresh cuts of meats you won't find elsewhere and foodie heaven for those seeking hard-to-find or ethnic ingredients. The creamed corn w/ mayo was amazing, and the beef tongue taco was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and flavorful. I also ordered an entree involving shredded chicken, but the chicken was unfortunately a bit dry and bland. Overall though, had a great experience here and would highly recommend for a visit at least once.

Yelp
I really love this place. The tacos are filling, delicious, and come out quick. The convenience of being able to get a bite to eat and shop in the store is awesome. Plus there are tons of delicious pastries and breads in the bakery.

Yelp
This place. Is. AWESOME!!! By far the best tacos I've had in Durham. They stuff them, all the meats (except for the chicken) are great, and they're only $1.50! When I found this place, I came everyday for a week to try new things on the menu. Besides the tacos, the gorditas, sopes, huge tortas, chorizo and egg plate (can't remember what it was called), the Jamaica and mora (juices/teas) and all the salsas were off the chain. The only thing that I didn't really care for so far was the chicken, which I had in a tamale and the enchiladas verdes plate. It was a little on the dry side and bland. However, my friend had an empanada stuffed with tinga (chicken in red sauce) and said it was spectacular, so I'll have to go back and try that next.

Yelp
I've driven by here forever thinking that it was just a grocery store, never realizing (until recently) that they have a Food Court / Deli / Bakery inside! I stopped in on a Friday afternoon for lunch and went with the Tacos Dorados (with Beef) from the Platillos menu ... to go. It was a wonderful lunch (see the photo). Everything was tasty, and filling. It was a surprise to see the tacos were rolled up, but they were packed with meat. I just wish I'd dressed them up with something from the Salsa Bar. Just a couple of minor Negatives: The menu is spread out over several boards so it was overwhelming / confusing at first to place my order. Now that I have photos of the menu on my phone (and posted here on Yelp) I'll be ready to order with more confidence next time. Also, the lady at the counter mumbled something into the microphone to call me over to pick up my order. I have no idea what she said. Was it my check number? The menu item? This could be awkward if there are a lot of people waiting for their orders. In any case, I'll definitely be back. There are quite a few things I'd like to try.
