La Table de Maïna was everything my wife and I could have hoped for and more. We were on an overnight layover through Orly airport and, though we hoped to score a meal of Paris’ finest accord, decided not to stray too far into the heart of the city. Thankfully we discovered this gem just down the street from our hotel in the southern Parisian suburb of Montrouge. All 7 of our prix fixe, sashimi-heavy courses were stunning (there is also a 5-course option as well as a la carte ordering). Two plates in particular, however, stole the show (each are pictured below). The first: a tataki of thinly sliced, lightly charred salmon swimming in a yuzu-miso sauce, might just be the best thing I’ve eaten all year. Its presence on the menu alone is reason enough to return. The second: sushi-style anguilles (European eel) of the highest cook and quality served over a pâté of foie gras, was an explosion of flavor like I’ve rarely experienced before. The restaurant offers a wine pairing to the prix fixe meal(s) but we decided instead to pair with a beautiful bottle of left bank Bordeaux that had some nice age on it. In the end, despite the limited time and extreme jet lag, our eyes were opened to a whole new way of approaching the flavors of France, Japan, and even Peru. What an absolute treat!
