Best Mexican Restaurants in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Home of the $20 super burrito, La Vaca Birria made headlines when fans and skeptics alike responded to owner Ricardo Lopez’s high prices. Still, there’s a reason people swarm to the 24th Street shop for those $30 trifecta burritos, jam-packed with beef tallow, chargrilled steak and chicken, and marinated shrimp. It’s because the quality, and the final product, is very good. The spot accepts online orders for pickup." - Paolo Bicchieri

The Best Things We Ate This Week

"Dish: 3 Quesabirrias + Consomé The quesabirria at La Vaca Birria in the Mission is the new standard for San Francisco birria. Thick pieces of halal birria that fall apart almost instantly are piled high inside a crunchy tortilla. The Oaxacan cheese is melted until it forms a sliver of crust that adds to the savoriness and fattiness. The red and green salsas, while not spicy, are smoky, and the consomé is dark and rich (a.k.a. the perfect dipping companion). Make sure to squeeze some lime before taking a euphoric bite of these crispy, melty tacos. " - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez

La Vaca Birria Review - Mission - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Birria at this counter-service Mission spot is tender, rich, and simply feels like a meal worth celebrating. It manages to taste like the one you would find at a Mexican household on Christmas Eve, except you can get this one all year long. The best way to enjoy it is by ordering the quesabirria—the combination of the soft birria, the crunchy tortilla, and the melty cheese is as satisfying as those days when the fog skips right over the Mission. The accompanying consomé is the kind of broth you dream of on sick days, and while the smoky salsas are not particularly spicy, none of that matters when the big chunks of birria fall apart in your mouth. You'll also find an extensive list of massive burritos on their menu—we recommend getting one with the charcoal-roasted carne asada instead of the birria (the flavor can get muddled with all the ingredients). And while you’re here, steer clear of the overly decadent grilled cheese burrito, unless you’re planning on taking three-quarters of it home . Instead, get some of the toasty, tangy fried elote to round out the meal. " - Ricky Rodriguez

Google
La Vaca Birria for the win, best steak tacos I’ve EVER had! The service we received on a random Tuesday evening was professional, warm and our waitress and some great recommendations we really enjoyed. We had the house guacamole, which was incredible. Fresh and topped with a generous amount of cotija. The chips stood out too, the house fresh chips made with the blue maize were delicious, the crunch was next level. We also ordered the elote, perfectly seasoned and lots of crema to dip in! The highlight of our meal were the tacos. We each ordered the steak taco, the brisket chorizo taco, and the quesa-birria taco. As stated earlier this was the best steak taco I’ve ever eaten. The tortilla was made fresh with a blue maize, the steak was unreal, it was the most tender steak on a taco ever. The toppings and salsa finished the deal. The brisket chorizo taco and quesa-birria were both incredible, they were so rich but balanced with the tang of the salsa and the fresh bite of onion and cilantro 🔥 I’ll be back 🙇🏻‍♂️

Why Not

Google
Stop playing around and get here! Yes the idea of “best” is open to interpretation but when was the last time you ate a taco and it blew your mind? The food here is made with intention and care and you know what I could eat these steak tacos and mushroom tacos and churros everyday until I died.

Google
Hands down one of the best taquerias in San Francisco. The meat is incredibly tender and flavorful, and you can taste the quality in every bite. Fresh ingredients and consistently excellent execution. La Vaca Birria sets the bar

Google
Food here is very different from a typical taqueria. Tortilla is fattier from the beef tallow, and the carne asada has a distinct smoky aroma. Tacos are also on homemade two-tone corn tortillas. The birria is a home run with great flavor and texture. The carne asada super burrito has excellent quality, tender steak. Burritos used to be huge here. Now they are a bit more moderately sized. Chips and salsa are now blue and are not as good as the other ones. Price matches the quality of the food. La Vaca Birria clearly distinguishes itself from other taco joints and has its own purpose. Absolutely worth trying.

Google
Restaurant is clean. I ordered mesquite-grilled lengua, Baja fish taco, and quesabirria. Blue corn tortillas for tacos are made to order. All were very delicious. A bit disappointed they ran out of duck carnitas. Will have to try next time. Removed a star because I had to keep asking and waiting over 10 minutes to get my beer when it was not busy. Otherwise, the food is solid and servers are kind. UPDATE: Visited again on 6/18/2024 The interior has really improved. I really feel like these tacos are the Mercedes Benz of tacos in San Francisco. They’re definitely not cheap, but the fine and consistent dice of the onions, the layering of the fish and avocado, and quality of the hand-made tortillas is on another level compared to most other taquerias. The chips and salsa: even the chips are using handmade tortillas. Salsa is not too spicy, skin has been removed from the tomatoes. A for effort.

Google
This place is slept on!!!!!! I have tried all the Mexican food in the city and this place has been the best thus far. The flour tortillas are handmade, they use great quality cheeses and produce. You can definitely taste the quality of the food. I think this is my spot. Speaking as a Latina who has had a lot of Mexican food :)))

Google
Inside of the birria burrito is just like mud. And for some reason some of the spices they used made it taste like an Indian dish. Also the prices are too expensive and the service is bad.

Google
Absolutely amazing halal mexican food. Had tried a few recommended places in San Jose and around SF but this place just stole the show. If ever in the area will absolutely be back. We had the elote frito which really picks up on the second bite. The QUESABIRRIAS were on point and deliciously put together but the wood fired new york steak burrito stole the show - you could taste the difference in flavor with the tallow. Still searching for a halal mexican spot in NY area that does it so well…

Yelp
Came here last minute yesterday with friends and I gotta say we were NOT disappointed! Birria was the best birria I'd had in a long time. Here their birria was tender and juicy and flavorful. My friend and I had already ate a couple hours before but HAD to try something with our other friends, it was THAT good. I ordered the chicken taco which came on a handmade tort which was also delicious. Service was quick and efficient. Food came out super quick and everyone enjoyed their food. Ambiance was definitely a surprise in the best way. From the outside you would have never guessed that the inside is modern style cantina-esk. Lots of seating, clean tables. 10/10 will be back Very sad I only got the picture of my taco

Yelp
Ate out in the mission for the 1st time. My gf wanted to get pancakes and she heard they had a good pancakes so - My gf and I shared the smoked chorizo hash and buttermilk masa pancakes. She had also gotten the horchata while I got the Michelada. My gf was all over the pancakes. It was pretty good; the texture kind of reminded me of cornbread and it wasn't too sweet. I really enjoyed the smoked chorizo hash. I liked how the chorizo wasn't oily and I liked to put it on top of the avocado toast. The Michelada was really good too. My mouth is watering thinking about that spicy tomato with Modelo. I could've gone for another one honestly. My gf would not share her horchata. I had a small sip; and I agree that it was one of the smoothest horchatas I've ever had. The place could hold a lot of people. Luckily it wasn't packed when we went; by the time we left more people were filing in. I liked the art and roses and colors that were splashed onto the walls. I could've went just to see everythi by like it was a museum. This place can be pricey but I think the quality of the food and fast service makes up for it. I recommend this spot to couples and small groups of friends that are willing to spend a little more for good food and drinks. Definitely gonna have to come back and try out their other drinks. I saw a couple margs that looked so good!

Yelp
Margaritas are made with Soju (yes Soju and NOT tequila). The flavor profile has changed even though we were told they've "always used Soju." Ok fine, but I've never ordered a margarita at any other restaurant in San Francisco that did not use tequila or mezcal. Even more disappointing, the flavor of the steak burrito changed DRASTICALLY. There is way less meat (in the steak and chicken burritos) to even taste the "mesquite" flavor anymore. I understand that restaurants have to adjust pricing but what I don't understand, and can't pay for (or afford) is spending more money for less quality! Also, I admit that I drafted the below note several months ago and attached the pictures of the menu after the remodel, but decided to not post to not be negative, but after dining there today it is not about negativity... it's about the experience as a customer. Unfortunately, I don't think we will return. Drafted note from months ago below: Prices have increased and they no longer offer chips and salsa unless you pay an additional $. :( how I feel knowing that I'll likely never go back.

Yelp
This might be one of my favorite burritos I've tried in SF. We started with the guac, which came with a big pepper on type. Fine, but not my favorite. I got the birria tacos, which was juicy but a tad spicy for me. Instead, what impressed me was the steak burrito my boyfriend got, juicy beef that paired nicely with the beans, onion and guac. The ambiance is actually nicer than it looks from outside. There's plenty of space, and I could see it being a good casual place to catch up with friends.

Yelp
Now here's a real knee slapper, pudd'nhead. I was walking on 24th Street trying to avoid shoulder grazes from passersby who choose not to see me coming in the opposite direction. I took a momentary glance at this cafe which I recalled was a roast beef spot during the pandemic. Now it was apparently a rather spacious taqueria. Upon closer look at the menu taped to the window, I noticed the ingredients were not the standard Mission selections. I was seduced by the intrigue of choices like ribeye and lamb chops for taco fillings. I decided on the $7.50 Oyster Mushroom with salsa macha, onion, cilantro, crema, and catua, and the $8.50 Duck Carnitas with charred jalapeño salsa, onion, and cilantro. When my order arrived, the two small tacos looked strikingly similar (Photo 10), so I thought they forgot half my order because surely I would be getting two tacos with each order given how tiny they were. Feeling flustered, I brought my order to the counter and asked where the rest of my order was. I was told with an air of condescension that THIS was my order. I couldn't help myself and said, "Oh, this is what I get for $16?" The server merely shrugged. The tacos themselves were decent enough, nothing that special since the small portions didn't linger in my memory very long. Remind me to go to Pancho Villa for a normal-priced and sized taco. Forget the duck. FOOD - 3 stars...unusual tacos that weren't that distinctive AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...spacious for sure SERVICE - 2 stars...not exactly warm even if i asked a stupid question of them TOTAL - 3 stars...artisan tacos, caveat emptor RELATED - Exploring the Mission? Here's my collection of places l've patronized and reviewed: https://bit.ly/2NHtst6

Yelp
My bf and I had our first Valentine's Day together here in 2023 so this place has a soft spot for us. We came here after a Michael Jang garage art sale so we were excited to eat here! The place has gone through a remodel and the food tastes a bit differently. The low ranking is due to the customer service that was lacking. Our waitress did not provide us with water, utensils and we had to go ask for this and later on additional napkins. We were not checked on and had to get up again to ask for boxes. * Elote frito for $16 * Fried corn on the cob (4 pieces), kewpie mayo, cotija, chipotle sauce, tapatio, burnt lemon - a bit too much cotija for my taste. * 3 Quesabirrias with consome for $29 - consome didn't taste the same as I remember. * 2 Quesabirrias with rice and beans for $26 * 20 z horchata for $6.00

Yelp
The food is still good, but the steak burrito has gone downhill as far as quality goes. I thought it was a fluke the last couple times I went, but after seeing multiple other reviews saying the same thing -- something has unfortunately changed, it's closer to normal asada now -- more finally chopped, less, rather than the large juicy bites of tender steak. I miss the old burritos!

Yelp
I can't say enough great things about the birria tacos--absolutely incredible. The service was quick, and while the restaurant was relatively empty (it was a weekday near closing time), everything still hit. I also had the nachos with the trio of sauces--cleared the plate. After a full day of walking the city and wandering through Balmy Alley, I spotted the sign and took a chance. So glad I did. This place is an easy 10/10 and one I'd highly recommend.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing place here in San Francisco! Really enjoyed their food especially tacos and Birria.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my food at la Vaca Birria. I went with my brother and we both ordered items with the Birria that they are known for. He got to Birria burrito which he loved. I got the regular Birria tacos. The tacos were very delicious and the meat was incredibly flavorful. The restaurant itself was also very cute and spacious, and the service was very quick which was really appreciated. The only think I would mark against it is the price. I didn't get the Quesobirria tacos because of how expensive it was, and even though the food was delicious, it does seem like a lot compared to other places I've gone to. I definitely want to come back and try them, but maybe just plit them with someone else as a snack.
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
A bit chilly inside on a cool San Francisco evening, but super cute interior. Order at the register and they will bring your order to you. Do not skip the corn! So yummy. I got the birria plate with the fresh corn tortillas. For two people it came to almost 100 after tip and tax. Seemed a little high, but it was oh, so yummy. Still I got two meals out of it because I couldn't finish my plate.
google avatar

Yelp
Bring your appetite and bring a big wad of napkins, you'll need them. The burritos here are HUGE. Wveryone talks about the birria but the steak and chicken are such a hit . It has the right balance between juiciness and smokiness that is hard to find. The tortillas are filling and a bit oily, they seem to cooked in beef tallow. Of course the birria here lives up to its reputation and expectations. The tacos are a nice way to enjoy them without worrying of overindulging. If you want to go nuts try the nacho fries, we savored every bite and almost stole the show. Almost. The hot sauces are all solid too - the smoked jalapeño and chipotle are solid, and the creamy green has a bit more kick to it.

Mariseth A.

Yelp
I love Mexican food. But I also need halal food. And this spot hits both!!!! Food is really fresh and hits the spot!! Service is kind, and efficient. So glad I found this spot bc I will continue to RETURN!!!

Yelp
This is complicated. I ordered their nachos. Steak. No additions. $26. I said, "what?" The cashier, a very nice calm dude made an apologetic face and asked "is that OK?" I asked what they're known for that's cheaper and he said their steak is what's good. So I went for it and as soon as I did it, I regretted it because how could I possibly give a good review to $26 nachos?! There's no way nachos could possibly live up to a $26 price tag! My first bite, shocked me. Smoky, juicy, fresh tasting Carne Asada. Some of the best I've had from a taqueria in San Francisco! I was shocked! It was absolutely delicious. The chips were clearly homemade and just the right amount of crunch and crisp to them. The guacamole was generous and clean tasting, the whole thing was totally delicious. It was all good until I got to the cheese layer. It was way too much cheese to get through. I've had a lot of nachos in San Francisco and this was just a fail. This place is lucky to get three stars. For $26, I expect perfect execution. Maybe on another visit they would do better and actually distribute the cheese. I'm giving them more than two stars because the meat was spectacular. The chips were wonderful and the ingredients were solid. Surely there's a techie out there with enough disposable income to give this place a try. It's worth it!
google avatar

Clementina A.

Yelp
Very attentive. The cook had too came out because she noticed it showed I ordered two of the same thing. Which was very nice of her. Food was delicious. I ordered the quesabirria, and my boyfriend ordered the quesadilla. Next time we go I'll get what he had. I also enjoyed the guacamole. It was delicious and beautifully displayed.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing Halal tacos with amazing halal chorizo!! 10/10 would recommend, Quesa Birria was soooo good.
google avatar

Benjamin G.

Yelp
This place was a good choice to eat at. The chorizo super burrito I ordered was so flavorful, especially the guacamole. It was a bit pricey, but my friend and I split it, so it wasn't too bad and we still ate the perfect amount. The vibes were great, and the lobby was very clean, even the bathrooms. Service was fast. We ate here before a show, and did not have to stress about getting there on time.
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down the best Mexican food I've ever had!!! Mexican food up and down California is different, LAs is different from San Diego's which is different from SF's. As far as Mexican food goes though La Vaca Birria is one of the best under all categories! In the heart of the Mission, it has plenty of seating. We came with a large party of 10 adults and 4 babies on a Saturday and they accommodated us easily and the food was quick! We got a wide variety of foods but our favorites were the quesobirria (get the consume on the side, best I've ever had!). All the tacos were delicious, we tried the chorizo, steak and chicken. Chicken nachos and steak nachos were pheonominal! The elotes were the perfect starter! 10/10 will definitely be back. And the best part is everything is halal!

Yelp
I've been ordering from here for quite some time and haven't actually dined in. (It's a bit of a ways from me so delivery is usually the route we take). Full stop- the carne asada burrito is THE best you'll find in the city. I love love love the grilled cheese option for burritos. One time I splurged and added grilled chicken to my carne asada burrito and man was that epic. I've also ordered the quesabirria taco plate and the surf and turf. All are exceptional in taste and quality. (I prefer dine in for Birria though.) The price here might deter some, but you get what you pay for and this food is high quality. Everything is homemade- and that difference is unparalleled. Mexican food needs to be appreciated for the work involved in its preparation and not just looked at as cheap food. I'm proud to see that La Vaca Birria knows their worth and charges accordingly. All sides and/or ingredients inside the burritos are so good and the salas are not even needed, but of course add the perfect touch. I'll keep ordering from here and supporting this business and sooner than later I'll actually make it in.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Much less fun after the new menu & remodel :( Menu has been reduced, and the beef tacos weren't as smoky as I'd remembered. Guac is smaller, Cabeza is gone. Missing is the self-serve pickled vegetables & salsa station. When I asked about it (even asked a second time & offered to pay for some on the side), I was told that it comes with the tacos, which it never did. The drinks were still fantastic, the only thing that might bring me back. Imo not a place I'd go out of my way for anymore :(
google avatar

Nicholas C.

Yelp
Ordered the grilled cheese birria burrito to go. tasted great until I bit into a metal wire. Not sure how it got into my burrito. Almost swallowed it. Unfortunately this business doesn't have a telephone number to contact the owner. For $25 dollars, I would have expected a little more care making my burrito. It wasn't like they were that busy. Only 4 people at a table.
google avatar

Erin J.

Yelp
This place is getting absolutely out of hand. Been coming here for 2 years. It used to be my favorite burrito in sf, then sf chronicle covered it. Since then they've: - changed the consome (it used to be thicker, like a thin mole but with a unique rich birria flavor), apparently in response to customer complaints. Who changes the recipes that got them notoriety?!? -changed the menu, now multiple times. I can barely figure out my order anymore. It used to just be a super burrito. Then it was a grilled cheese burrito (extra $), now it's a birria burrito and paid $3 to add guacamole and $3 to add grilled cheese. -gotten INSANELY more expensive. My same birria super burrito with grilled cheese used to be $18. Now, 6 months later. it's $31. For two birria tacos and consome it's $28. WHAT?!? That is absolutely absurd. This place legitimately makes the best burrito and salsa in SF, but I cannot support a business that keeps changing it's menu to make things deceptively more expensive and changing their recipes to supposedly appease their new customers. What used to be my favorite burrito in sf has been ruined by a mix of media coverage and clearly awful ownership. The burrito is still damn good don't get me wrong, but nah. This ain't right.

Yelp
Metered parking available, but it may be hard to snag a spot. Super impressed by the food! The menus are available at the front and once you're ready, you'll order with the cashier there. You'll receive a number to place on your table if you are dining in, so that they know where to deliver your order. Water is self serve next to the cashier. From the complimentary homemade chips, chipotle sauce, tajin fries and birria taco tray ($90)...Everything was amazing. I couldn't get enough of the best tortilla chips I've ever had paired with the chipotle sauce. Then the birria tacos came out with the rice, beans, and consomme and I couldn't even finish my second taco. My party of 5 and I were so full as we were pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes. Great music, staff and aesthetics!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
These hand made tortillas ate down. So soft and light and didn't really crumble in your hands. The oyster mushroom seasoned really well and grilled perfectly - this was actually my favorite taco that I got. the shrimp taco was really good too. I love the seasoning on the shrimp however I do wish that there was a little bit more meat, the shrimp was pretty big in size, a third definitely could've fit in the taco without it overfilling. The birria was great too, tender, juicy, flavorful. Need to come back and try a margarita, the guacamole, and have more oyster mushrooms for sure. It's pricey for tacos but honestly, so is everything in this city (sad)
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
The Quesabirria was perfectly crisp and packed with flavor. A little on the pricey side (3 quessabirria for $26) but still worth a try. Wasn't too busy around Sunday 11am, but it was right after the Thanksgiving holiday so maybe most people were not around.
google avatar

Raneem R.

Yelp
Supper yummy burritos but the prices are high for the area (2 burritos came out to $46). The super burrito comes with guac and sour cream so opted for that one, the portion sizes are huge! The shrimp burrito is really good, I would say that one is worth it. They also give chips while you wait (and the wait was long) so that was a plus! They have plenty of dipping sauces in the front.
google avatar

Gabriela R.

Yelp
Some of the best nachos I've ever had! Seriously, my ancestors are celebrating this one. Can't wait to order again. The fish tacos were underwhelming. But the nachos!
google avatar

Taylor W.

Yelp
This is my go-to place to get birria tacos. My friend put me on to La Vaca, and I've been hooked since. It's usually not very busy which I like. The tacos are always very hot, and come with a nice size of consome on the side. They are very generous with the amount of meat and cheese they use. The margaritas are also very good. It's a great place to come with friends, sometimes we sit at the tables to chat while we eat our food. Always leave feeling very full, and it's not bad to heat up at home. Looking forward to my next visit.
google avatar

Yelp
You don't need yet another review telling you the food is excellent, which it is. This is not a five-star review because our experience with the female cashier was extremely off-putting. Despite several chances to see if I was imagining the hostility, she was extremely rude for no reason. Maybe racism. My husband tried this place last week and was so excited to take me there. We did the same that he did the week before - a taco each with plans to take burritos to go for dinner. We ordered at the desk and he paid, tipped, etc. I helped myself to salsa and then she started helping the next person. He apologetically told me he got chips last time and thought we would get them. After I sat down and saw other tables had chips, I went back to the cashier waited in line. I politely said, "last time, we got chips." She scowled and threw a mostly empty bowl of chips at me. Other tables had full bowls. We sat down and she brought our tacos on ONE plate to share. I don't know why the lack of service here, but she did not deserve our tip or $50 for burritos. I loved the chips and tortilla, by the way.

Yelp
They gave an amazing brunch menu, though I came for their Quessobirria which was excellent. My friends had the chilaquiles and they said they'd return just for this dish (it was their first time af this restaurant, and my second visit). Their horchata is very tasty as well.
google avatar

Christina R.

Yelp
Best burrito I've ever had! Humongous (it fed two of us, and we were VERY full), stuffed to the brim, and incredibly tasty. The birria was melt-in-your-mouth good, and the grilled cheese on the outside of the tortilla just took it to the next level. Service is quick; order at a counter and your food is made fresh and brought out to you. In the meantime you're given complimentary chips, and a have your choice of sauces from a salsa bar. These salsas are amazing, clearly very fresh. Atmosphere is bright, casual and fun. Definitely worth the stop if you live in SF or are visiting like us!
google avatar

Kaveh H.

Yelp
Updating the review to take a star off for poor form. During a street festival, they closed off their bathrooms completely. I think it's pretty understanding to make it for customers only, especially during a festival, but closing it off completely is kind of annoying. I mean, if I'm buying a 25 dollar burritos, I think I've earned the right to wash my hands and let the kids pee. Anyways, I assume the food is still good but I went next door at farolito and it was good too.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
This spot was a savior after a woeful tacos + beer festival scam!! Birria is always a little pricey even in the Mission but the delicious and sizeable margarita plus a free salsa bar made up for it. Great casual spot with a cute floral wall!
google avatar

Keila P.

Yelp
We walked in and it was clean inside and they had a cute neon sign posted on the wall. The employee was patient and kind and our food came out very quickly. They had an array of salsas at the front and a food tour guide stopped by this location as well. It is a good spot located in the mission district and is not too far if you wanna go for a stroll on the main street. Overall, I had a great experience and would come back again. Thank you!

Yelp
WHAT HAPPENED!!?? This used to be one of my favorite places for delicious Mexican food at an affordable price. It was the only place I could find perfect fish tacos... I hadn't been in for a few months and was excited to have some fish tacos, but everything's changed. The remodel is really nice (though why you would have a television in a restaurant that's more "upscale" than it used to be doesn't make sense to me). BUT, fish tacos, GONE salsa bar, GONE blue corn tortillas on the tacos, GONE We had steak tacos, but they didn't have all the "stuff" that used to make the previous tacos so wonderful, and we really missed the different salsas. The price went up a lot, too... not sure I'll be back... I'm sad. (and I miss the kid who always took the orders, he was so great!!!).

Yelp
One of the best quesabirria tacos I have ever had. The consume is not even needed because the meat is so juicy, tender, and flavorful. The tacos were so huge, I was barely able to finish them. The cheese was very delicious as well and gave a great cheese pull on the first bite. The service was great... the cashier said to expect a 20 minute wait for the food to come out but it came out in less than 10 minutes. They gave free chips and salsa. The place is decorated very nice with a rose wall and colorful furniture. Had amazing music playing our whole meal. Would come back again! 10/10!!!

Yelp
La Vaca is my favorite Mexican spot in the Bay Area, and my favorite restaurant in SF. Their elote platter is delicious and a great table sharer if you're going with a group. I love the quesobirria and the slow cooked birria tacos. Consumè is delicious as well. They've recently remodeled and it looks amazing.

Yelp
The birria is juicy, the tacos are cheesy, the burritos are MASSIVE, the pizza is stacked, so all in all the food is GREAT. The Quesabirra, Surf and Turf Burrito, Call Burrito, Lenga Burrito, Baja Burrito, and the Birra Pizza are a few of the items on this menu that I would call must try foods. The mission is a great place for amazing food, so this is definitely one to be added to the list as well! Everything is made fresh in house and is also halal which is a nice surprise but the flavor and the spices dont miss. The staff is very kind and food comes out relatively quick. There is plenty of seating but they pick up fast around dinner time, luckily there's a tv to watch to keep you busy and a nice window seat so you can enjoy the locals passing by.

Yelp
La Vaca Birria recently updated their menu and the burrito section is now more limited. While the food is still great, I REALLY miss the Cali Burrito. Please bring it back! My favorite part was how crunchy the fries were in the burrito, and sadly when I asked if I could add fries to a burrito the waitress denied me :(

Yelp
First visit: I am stunned by just how good this place is. The tacos are excellent, with the kind of flavor that one lets every friend know about. There was so much skill in the kitchen. The chips that come with the meal are generous, but the salsas lack in flavor. Food is amazing. Second visit: They're too busy and the wait is 30 minutes... I need to come back another time.

Yelp
Thins are a bit pricy here but I later realized taste makes up for price tags. I wasn't feeling too hungry so I tried to be healthy and got the oyster mushroom taco. I think the texture could've been done better (maybe if it were like a mushroom fritter instead of what felt more...mushy in general) but the flavors were amazing. Pair it with some sauces from the salsa bar (loved the green sauce and chipotle sauce) and fill up on their delicious chips. My friends got the birria though and wow that consomme hits so hard. So rich, but somehow doesn't make you feel like you're guzzling grease.

Yelp
Was in the Mission for Carnival today so we headed inside and could still see the parade. As a group we ordered burritos, guacamole, and birria tacos. Everything was delicious and tasty. We received our food quickly and served with a smile. I highly recommend trying this place for sure

Yelp
I don't know what happened, but the price are more than double what I remember and 3x what its really worth. For real who's paying $28 for beans, rice and 2 tacos!!! Or $18 for 2 stalks of corn!! Sad, i used to love this place.

Yelp
Quality is very inconsistent for the price of the food. If you want melted cheese in your burrito, you have to get the grilled cheese burrito option. We got the California and the cheese was truly fridge cold and not melted. When we asked. they said only the grilled cheese burrito has melted cheese. Very odd choice but to each their own. There are better California burritos in this city for under $20. I'll likely pass on this place in the future.

Yelp
I read about this place in SF Chronicle. It mentioned it had the bet birria burrito in the city, so I had to try it. I ordered through Postmates and it said the wait would be 45-1 hour. I ordered around 6pm on a Saturday night. I didn't receive my order until 8 ish. My driver waited at the restaurant for a long time and texted me that they were backed up. I assume others read about it too and wanted to try it. The food was WOW. I ordered the Nachos, Super Burrito - Birria and Super Burrito - Mesquite grilled steak and prawns. Nachos: I really enjoyed the chips. It was thick and wasn't too salty. They gave a lot of toppings and meat, I'd say one of the best nachos I've tasted from a taqueria! Worth the $20. Super Burrito - Birria: Their burritos are super thick. It had a lot of birria. If you were to finish this in one sitting, I'm sure you'd get full quick! Def worth the award. It lived up to the hype! Super Burrito - Mesquite grilled steak and prawns: Had a lot of protein. The prawns were huge. Easily one of the best burritos I've tasted. Overall, definitely worth the steep price. They give a lot of meat and everything was delicious! The food made up for the wait time. Will order again!

Yelp
Nice taqueria in the Mission. For vegans you can get either the oyster mushroom taco or oyster mushroom burrito just leave out the cheese and sour cream. I went with the Oyster mushroom burrito that comes with flour tortilla, salsa mocha, oyster mushrooms, rice, beans, onion, cilantro, and guacamole. It was solid. I have some suggestions for improvements later in the review Tacos are made with fresh heirloom blue corn tortilla. I love that you can sit down to eat here. The salsa bar is one of the highlights. Three salsas to choose from that are all quite alright. Complimentary corn chips are provided. One of my favorite places in the Mission for a vegan burrito is Papalote which has several vegan options, whole wheat tortilla, and brown rice. The problem with Papalote is they only do take out now since the pandemic and miss being able to dine in there. Room for improvements here would be to offer another vegetarian/vegan option. To offer brown rice and whole wheat tortilla along with perhaps the other burrito/taco having different veggies to mix it up.

Yelp
This is my 3rd and, unfortunately, final review. I've eaten here maybe 5-6x now and I really wanted this place to succeed. It HAD delicious burritos and tacos, with flavors that USED to be amazing and new (note, the past tense). But after my 2nd time eating here, every experience has gotten worse and worse over the last 3+ months. Sure, if it were because of bad service? That's just a bad employee. But it's because I can feel and taste that they've made a restaurant-wide decision to lower the quality of their food: the meat has less flavor, there's barely any meat now in their burritos, they don't even offer their orange sauce anymore, and items that used to be free now have an up-charge. Yes, their biggest complaint to date has probably been how expensive they are. But, all these cuts haven't led to price decreases AND it's as if they have no pulse on their key customers - if you need to cut cost, cut them somewhere else, not by making the products that bring customers into your door worse and worse! Skip this spot. Disregard any photo that was posted more than 3 months ago that shows lots of quality meat filled and piled into burritos and tacos. That's all gone (I forgot to take a picture of my burrito last night, but imagine if you cut it in half and saw 5% meat & 90% rice and beans). It used to serve exorbitantly expensive $30 burritos and tacos that I was willing to splurge on every now and then. Now they're scamming you $30 burritos and tacos that taste like they aren't even worth $10.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best places to get tacos in SF. Delicious tacos, I especially loved the birria. Hand made tortillas.
