La Virgen de Las Nieves - Review - South Philly - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"If you’re out at a bar in South Philly, then La Virgen De Las Nieves is where you should stop for a late-night meal. The small Mexican corner store is right down the street from Bok Bar, and at around midnight you’ll see people stumbling through the doors to share one of their huge huaraches that come in a pizza box and only cost $10. You should also know that they’re open all day, and everything on their menu (like their tacos and enchiladas) is delicious." - Sydney McElwee

Where To Get A Great Meal That Doesn’t Cost A Lot - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"This tiny Mexican spot in South Philly specializes in huge, pizza-box-sized huaraches. These meat-topped sheets of masa dough only cost $10 and it’ll take you a knife, fork, and at least a couple friends to make your way through one. While you’re here, enjoy the free chips and bean and cheese dip they give to every table, grab a jarritos from the fridge, and watch some Mexican soaps that are always playing on the TV." - Sydney Mcelwee

One of the best place in Philadelphia to get a wholesome, delicious and complete meal. Their tacos are 100% worth it and a must try.

If you’re ever in South Philly and craving true, authentic Mexican food, look no further—this place is the real deal. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the heart and soul poured into every dish. The flavors are rich, bold, and unmistakably authentic—just like you’d hope to find in a family-run spot straight out of Mexico. Whether it’s the perfectly seasoned tacos, the tender carnitas, the handmade tortillas, or the salsas that pack just the right punch, everything tastes like it was made with pride and tradition. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff treat you like family. You don’t come here for watered-down Tex-Mex—you come here for real-deal Mexican cuisine that speaks to the soul. This gem is everything you’d want and more. Easily one of the best Mexican restaurants in the city. Five stars, no question. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The moment you walk in, the colorful decor and warm, inviting smells make you feel right at home. Their tacos and enchiladas are packed with flavor, and the portions are generous. It’s the kind of spot you’ll want to come back to again and again.

Google
Service was very horrible, I made an online order and called to make a change they kept hanging. Asked for my card # 6 times. Food came and the enchiladas were DISGUSTING. It tasted very sour, they put a scrambled egg on top of it for what reason? And I asked for chicken they gave me steak. The steak tostadas were pretty good. No complaints about that.

I'm not usually a breakfast person, but today I woke up early and wanted something different. I went to this little Mexican place, La Virgen de las Nieves, at the corner of 8th and Mifflin, and was greeted by some very friendly people. I got the Steak Breakfast, look at this picture, it's so much food! I had no idea there would be so much. I was full all day from this, it was very good, I really enjoyed it. Thank you very much La Virgen de las Nieves! I will definitely be back again. If you're near 8th and Mifflin, check it out, and make sure to feed the tip monster.

Google
Food is top notch and super speedy. The highlight is definitely the huaraches, but let’s be honest, they make all of the tortillas fresh so they can whip up masa in any shape or form your heart desires.

Google
Food: Best Mexican food I've had! So tired of Tex Mex or Mexican cuisine that doesn't give me that gooey cheese I like. & They have my favorite jarritos in different varieties. Service: It was quick and they are very nice. Atmosphere: Makes you feel at home when seated there

Google
The huaraches are *chef's kiss*... But truly love everything they make!

Yelp
I've been wanting to check out this place for the longest time. We finally got the chance to last night. My husband and I got 2 orders of tacos and the chips and guacamole. We both opted to mix two different meats in our tacos. I went with Al pastor and steak, and he went with the lengua and fried pork. My tacos came with a delicious, spicy cactus salad that balanced out the savory meats. My husband's tacos were good, too, but I definitely would have liked it more if the lengua was more tender. The guacamole was good. The consistency was perfect, not too thick, not too runny. Portions were generous, and prices were more than reasonable. I would definitely come back again!

Yelp
I am from San Francisco where Mexican food is accessible on every corner. So be in Philly has been a little bit of a culture shock. But I stumbled upon this restaurant by chance, and was pleasantly surprised by the food. I didn't take photos of everything which I wish I had but that's how good it was that I just dived right in! The food presentation was amazing. The salsa was everything you had hoped it would be. Food gave a very authentic five as someone who is Mexican and Salvadoran I can attest to this. I felt like I was right at home. I would definitely recommend the rice and beans. You got a really big portion for the price. Everything taste great and definitely reminded me of home! Will def be back soon!

Yelp
They have good food but are simply inconsistent. Today I ordered the same thing I've ordered several times and it was missing a key ingredient. No reason, no explanation. Several times before they took twice as long as the quoted time to prepare my order. I gave them another chance today and sadly it's my last.

Yelp
My friends who live in South Philly took me to this place for dinner. It's a small restaurant for casual dining, but boy do they have a huge menu. We had chips and salsa to share, which were great! It was tough for me to decide on my entrée, so one of my friends recommended the chorizo con papa tacos dorados. The portion is huge. I had some leftover rice and beans. The tacos dorados were delicious. They had a good crunch on the outside while the potato and sausage bits on the inside weren't dry. Personally I find that the red sauce goes better with it than the green sauce. The only downside to this place is that service is on the slower side. Most people order takeout from this place.

Yelp
I like their food and laid back ambiance. The waitstaff and everyone working in the kitchen are always friendly even though I don't speak Spanish and sometimes we have trouble communicating. A lot of hand gesturing and pointing sometimes do a better job than words.

Clyve T.

Yelp
I probably order delivery from here twice a month. They are my favorite Hispanic food in Philly. Generous portions and affordable prices. They are always friendly and it is always fast. When ever I have a long day at work and do t feel like making a mess of my kitchen these guys are my go to and have never disappointed me. The burritos are so big I can split it with the wife. Home style, reminds me of moms cooking.
google avatar

Retna S.

Yelp
Got burrito al pastor. It's big full of fillings. The pork is tender. I was disappointed because they didn't have chocolate flan. There are snacks and packaged cakes.

Gabbie J.

Yelp
First I want to say, FAKE AGUAS FRESCAS! They just use flavoring powders for the waters. I got a horchata and just by the color I could tell it's just flavoring powder. Food is flavorless. This is not the place for Mexican food, so many other Mexican restaurants in south Philly that are way better. Don't waist your money please.

Yelp
Why is it so difficult to find a spot that sells a gordita & not the nasty thing advertised by Taco Bell??? After a 15 minute search I finally landed on this gem in South Philly. Parking is difficult a bit because it's located on a corner in a residential area yet worth it. This isn't the "Tex mex" you find in Center City, they actually cook with heart here & sell snacks too. For $23 we had the gordita, torta, papaya juice & horchata which filled us beyond imagination. The only fault is the horchata kept separating in my mug and didn't have the spices. The torta jamón was excellent and tasted better with the red sauce that came with the gordita papa. Hearty servings, 2 TVs, pick your own drink from the fridge and enjoy yourself. Only thing to remember if dining inside is there isn't a public restroom. Very nice community this is placed & now I'll be bookmarking this spot.

Yelp
I got the al pastor tacos, the salad w steak & guacamole. The guacamole had good consistency and it would have been awesome if it weren't too spicy for me to eat. The rest of the food gave me food poisoning. In a lot of pain from this meal. I do not recommend.

Penney K.

Yelp
I haven't had enchiladas in forever. The last place I ordered them from delivered inside out. The chicken was on the top of the rolled tortillas. Weird, right? So I was overjoyed looking at the photos here of the enchiladas Verde. My partner was excited for them having AL Pastore. We were ecstatic that it was local to us. Only 3 blocks away. What is it with Philly Mex putting a fried egg on top of enchiladas? And why radishes as a filler food. The 3 Amigos with what appeared to be string cheese instead of nicely melted gooey Oaxaca aka Munster. I've given up ever getting a good Mexi meal in Philly. Sad because it is my favorite meal.

Yelp
Great homestyle tacos and amazing price. This is not a fancy gourmet place, you will feel like you are in a taquería. Flavor is good, service is gentle. Be patient and enjoy. Enchiladas and tacos (campechanos, al pastor) are my favorite things here.
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
I wanted to try out new Mexican restaurants during this time of quarantine, so I called a few restaurants and La Virgen De Las Nieves was open! The al pastor tacos were good, I really like they put bits of pineapple with the pork, so that sweetness really comes through. Chicken quesadilla was very traditional and the rice and beans were decent as well. Overall, it didn't wow me compared to my regular Mexican restaurants, but I had no complaints.
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
I was in the mood for some tacos and I came across this restaurant. The food was amazing and everything is inexpensive. I really enjoyed the tacos. I will be coming back and trying the other dishes on the menu. It's 24/7 but parking is tough. Reminder: They only accept cash.
google avatar

Topher M.

Yelp
Poor service & rude workers. Past 3 orders and THEIR website says 15-25 min till ready. When I walk over they tell me it is going to be another 15-20 min. Today the cook tells me thats just how long it takes and starts yelling call the company to get a refund...He realizes I used THEIR website and is now calm and tells the lady dealing with the cash register to give me my money. 40/45 min for an order is completely unacceptable.
google avatar

Jency S.

Yelp
I came here with a group of 5 after an event at Bok Bar, just halfway up the street. Its tiny but makes up for the lack of space in every other way. The complimentary chips with refried beans were amazing and I'm not really a chips and refried beans person. I ordered the spicy chicken with avocado sauce tacos and wow. I am definitely not waiting until I'm in the area again to get some more of this. La Virgen De Las Nieves is definitely the best Mexican food I've had on this coast.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Tacos al pastor and spicy chicken with avocado cream were really, really good. Definitely some of the better tacos in the city. Enchilada in red sauce was also good, but should have gotten extra sour cream on the side. Small place but very worth it. Reasonable prices. Right across from Bok Bar.
google avatar

J G.

Yelp
Listen up you gringos and gringo wannabes..screw your el vez and taco bell, if you want some smack down muy bueno Mexican comida you come here. I have no idea how this place isnt well known. This food is great and the service is even better. Bring your culo over here and enjoy some of the finest mexican food.

Yelp
Ordered delivery yesterday. Got the cheese quesadilla and that was ok. (You can't screw this up). The sour cream was a bit watery and the green salsa was not good. We also got the vegetarians enchiladas. This was where the lower star rating comes in. I don't know if it was because of delivery or what but this was a terrible dish. Was thrown out for the most part. It came with rice and beans. The rice was decent but the pinto beans were watery to the point of being soupy. Lacked any flavor but that wasn't even the worst part. The enchiladas, we thought would be cheesy goodness. But instead it was just filled with green peppers and onions and didn't taste at all like what an enchilada should taste like. Come on.. where's the cheese??? If ordering this, maybe specify you want cheese (!). Maybe we should have went to taco Bell instead. This was a

Yelp
I ordered delivery from La Virgen using the Yelp app while at a nearby bar and it was a great meal. The menu has a large variety of items so it can satisfy just about anyone. As soon as I saw pictures of the huaraches, I knew I would be ordering one of them. The whole fried fish also sounded good. And I figured I had to order tacos in order to form a well rounded opinion of the restaurant. The Huarache is a huge oval shaped piece of masa dough, imagine a really thick soft tortilla. It is first covered in black beans and then your choice of meat which are the same as typical taco choices. I love carnitas so this was my choice for topping. In addition, it had cactus, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream. It was big and almost like eating a Mexican pizza. It even came in a pizza box. You can tear off pieces or dig in with a fork, your preference. I really liked it and will happily eat it again. The Mojarra Frita is a whole fried fish with tomato, avocado, and cheese on top. Rice and salad came with it on the side. The fish was flavorful and moist with a crispy outside and cooked quite well. When it came to choosing tacos, I decided on the Cecina Special Taco. Cecina was a meat I hadn't tried before that the menu described as a salted cured beef. The meat did have a bit of a cured taste to it, different than if they had been fresh beef cooked raw. The designation of special just meant that it came with cactus, jalapeno, avocado, and cheese in addition to onions plus radishes on the side. These were pretty good tacos if you want your beef to have a bit darker flavor to them. I enjoyed them. The huarache came with a green sauce and a red sauce and the tacos came with just the red sauce. The red sauce was smokey and a bit spicy, perhaps made with chipotle peppers or something to that sort. The green sauce was mild with a fresher flavor. The ordering process was easy since it was through Yelp and it took less time than the estimated one hour. I would eat here again but would like to stop in and check out the restaurant itself. The food wasn't amazingly good, but it was good. I would give it 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Amazing. They take credit card. So many different dishes that are all super tasty. If you eat in, you also get chips with refried beans and cheese. I love their bistec, it's so well seasoned and marinated. Tons of small snacks and desserts that are there too. Most dishes are so cheap at around $8.50 to $10.50.

Yelp
Cute place, great prices and quality. Staff is very friendly. Enchiladas Verdes were great.

Yelp
I am in love with their gargantuan huarache in a pizza box. The carnitas are solid. And I always get the side of nopales and the cambray onions--they are both extremely good, esp the onions. They are a delivery standby for me.
google avatar

Lucero M.

Yelp
This place is a hidden spot, my torta de pollo was delicious and the agua de tamarindo was so good! Customer service was great!
google avatar

Hilliard R.

Yelp
To be honest because of the look you would think the food would be bad but since I've ever came into this building since way back going to southwark in the early 90's and all the different businesses they've had here the food always been good my shot is the chicken quesadilla and Tacos so you can take my word or just give them a try and the service is good too so to all I hope you enjoy
google avatar

Shawna E.

Yelp
I love their chicken tacos with the avocado sauce. Sooo good and they're different than most taco spots I've had in South Philly.

Sofia R.

Yelp
Amazing food!!! The nachos are a favorite, as well as the huaraches. You really can't wrong with anything on the menu :-) and a very friendly and lovely staff!

Kayla K.

Yelp
Ordered from here thinking with the reviews it would be worth it. I received avocados that are brown on top of my fajitas and was expecting tradition rice that my mom usually makes, but I just got white rice with a little bit of veggies in it. I wouldn't recommend going here if you want something authentic

William C.

Yelp
Walked over to this place the night after we moved in a couple blocks away. They do a ton of delivery and pickup and with just a couple cooks the back of house is frenetic. Even so, it pays to eat in. Prices may seem a little high but the quantity and quality is more than worth it. Figure you're actually paying for your fresh meal plus lunch the next day and you won't regret coming in.
google avatar

Mikki L.

Yelp
Not the best I've ever had. The chips and guac's not as good as Los Gallos. I actually could make guac better. The steak tacos were not as good as Prima. I didn't care for the bits of tomatoes and radish in the tacos with a big strip of cheese on top. I thought those were unnecessary and didn't added anything to the tacos. Onions and cilantro on top would have sufficed.

Colleen G.

Yelp
Best tacos I've had in philly. Everything is made fresh to order including tortillas. Could highly recommend the al pastor and chorizo tacos-- meat was perfectly cooked with a wonderful crust on both.
google avatar

Siren T.

Yelp
I've never eaten in here but this is the only Mexican restaurant I get delivery from. The food is all so amazing and there are more options that you know what to do with. So much food as well with no slacking on quality. A must try.
google avatar

Tamsin W.

Yelp
Favorite neighborhood Mexican spot! The portions are huge and delicious. Delivery is quick and the food is still fresh. I have tried several different items on the menu and have never been disappointed!
google avatar

Max O.

Yelp
Love this place. Best spanish food in town. Very nice people great customer service. Everything js always fresh
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
Tiny spot with a standard Mexican menu. While I enjoyed the the tortilla making up the sope base, the carnitas topping was too fatty. Would be willing to try some of the other proteins.
google avatar

Leslie B.

Yelp
I have eaten a lot of tostadas in my life and these vegetarian tostadas are THE BEST IVE EVER HAD. Grilled veggies, cactus, beans, shredded lettuce, cheese, avocado. Three to an order. They're just amazing. Perfect balance of flavor. Huge portion. Highly recommend as your entree or as an app to share. Mmmmmmmm.
google avatar

Brenden C.

Yelp
Huarache was amazing! Delivery was very quick! Not a huge fan of cactus. I would order it without next time or substitute peppers.
google avatar

Nikki P.

Yelp
Their food is great and their service is very nice. Even their driver is polite and nice. They make it exactly as you want it. Everything I've had so far tastes great. I really like the nachos con pollo and camarones tostada.

Justin G.

Yelp
Excellent staff with great energy. Nice portions and authentic Mexican cusinine. What's not to like? I tried 2 vegetable burritos. Only thing that could make the restuarant better I could see is making their own red hot sauce! Otherwise 5/5 stars
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
Great food in a tiny space. If you take a young child, there are no high chairs. I don't recall there being restrooms, but there is a random sink at the entrance where you can wash your hands.

Claudia B.

Yelp
We love this restaurant...it is one of our favorite places for an easy dinner after babysitting ou grandkids. The spicy chicken tacos are my favorite but we haven't had anything we haven't enjoyed. The staff is friendly and the service is quick. Across from the Boc building with takeout or eat in options. If you are a fan of mexican food I think you should give it a try.
google avatar

Alex T.

Yelp
Honestly, the food here is *always* good. This is hands-down the best mexican place I've ever eaten from. The nachos are way better than they have any right to be. The burritos? So good. Easily the best bang for your buck.
google avatar

Howard A.

Yelp
Food is great best mexican fast food in south philly .... I always eat here their chicken tacos and steak tacos are great

Donna L.

Yelp
Best little kept secret near the Bok building. The tacos al pastor (pork and pineapples) are my absolute favorite. Truly authentic cuisine in South Philly.

Chris G.

Yelp
Overall, my favorite Mexican spot in South Philly. Virgen has such a great, diverse menu, and everything is quality. I believe they make their own corn tortillas as well. Ordering on Yelp is great, delivery is fast, and the food is hot when it arrives.

P M.

Yelp
It was tasty - not quite as warm as would have liked. The guac was chunky which was perfect! And one of our party would have liked a dessert option ( flan or 3 leches)

Aurora G.

Yelp
This is my new favorite Mexican spot. We got there just before the dinner rush and the place was fully staffed. The staff quickly approached us with menus, answered our questions about the different choices, and made very helpful suggestions. In the kitchen, they quickly got work work whipping our food up...chopping, dicing, and blending our ingredients fresh. Knowing we were on-the-go, they outfitted us with sauces, spoons, napkins, the works for our taco feast. And when we popped open those containers in the car, MMMMMMMMM, the fresh flavors hit our noses and we couldn't wait to dig in. The jalapeño-avocado-corn salsa was fresh and still "crisp", never having had a second to get soggy. The tortillas tasted homemade and the Chicken Adobado was spicy but not so hot as to overwhelm the palate. Fresh lime, cucumber, and radish slices complimented the plate and helped balance the heat. Overall I can't say enough good things about this meal. Except that it ALSO wasn't expensive. Everything about this adventure was refreshing. I very highly recommend.

Liddy C.

Yelp
I am no expert on Mexican food. However, my husband and I walked into this unassuming corner restaurant thinking it was a corner store. It was 2pm and people were eating at a couple of the small tables. One guy had a soup that smelled so very good, we knew we'd be back and we grabbed a menu. We've done take-out three times and have tried things we had never seen on other Mexican menus before (or hadn't noticed), like the Tlacoyas. This is 3 flat breads that have beans cooked in them, and are topped high with greatness. They are SPICY because of the chili sauce. We liked the chicken and the pork, and both times we had leftovers. We've ordered nachos twice with meat and the flavor was great, and a good portion. A few days ago we ordered two new things off the menu. We ordered steak fajitas, and we were so impressed with the flavor and fresh ingredients. It is one of the best I've had, however I think I prefer other tortillas. We also got the shredded deep fried pork Huaraches, not knowing what it was. I'd like to think of it as a gourmet taco pizza, because it was a long flat almost flaky crust topped with the yummy pork, great cheese, cactus and sour cream. This place is consistently generous with how high they stack the ingredients, so we had left overs. The spice level is high on a lot of the food, so have a good beer ready.
