The Best New Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul Right Now, March 2025

"New Orleans-style restaurant Lagniappe, from Du Nord Distillery owners Shanelle and Chris Montana, debuted in the newly renovated Coliseum Building on Lake Street. Dressed in dark velvet tones, with an elegant-but-never ostentatious atmosphere, Lagniappe takes its cues from the culinary culture of the Big Easy, serving broiled redfish on the half shell; rosemary-Worcestershire barbecue shrimp with stone-ground grits; jambalaya studded with sausage and mussels; and more. Round out the meal with an order of bread pudding." - Serena Maria Daniels

Lagniappe offers a fantastic dining experience with a well-curated cocktail selection and a concise yet flavorful menu. I opted for the grillades and grits, a simple yet protein-rich dish that exceeded my expectations—each bite was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Our group ordered nearly all the entrées, and every dish was outstanding. The service was exceptional, with our server being both attentive and engaging. A highlight of the evening was the tableside preparation of Bananas Foster, where the server walked us through each step of the recipe, making for an interactive and delightful experience. Overall, Lagniappe is a great choice for a memorable dinner, whether you're dining as a couple or with a group. Highly recommended!

Lagniappe is a super fun spot to enjoy some great Creole cuisine! My party of four visited on a Saturday evening and had a lovely time. The service was good and the food and drinks were very tasty. I also loved the cool atmosphere with the beautiful, festive decor and moody ambiance. The standouts of the meal for me were the appetizers: the charbroiled gulf oysters were incredible and the fried green tomatoes were top-notch. All the cocktails were awesome too, especially the “Apple Affair” which was sweet, delicious, and super unique. We ordered the bananas foster for dessert, and the staff amazingly brought out a cart to cook it in front of us—this was a very fun and memorable experience. I highly recommend checking out Lagniappe for your next night out, I will definitely be back to try some of their other dishes!

A Taste of New Orleans in the Heart of Minneapolis! This brand-new New Orleans-style restaurant & craft cocktail bar is a game-changer for the Minneapolis dining scene. From the moment you walk in, the vibrant ambiance, warm hospitality, and the authentic Creole & Cajun flavors transport you straight to the French Quarter. The craft cocktails are next-level, featuring a wonderful mix of bold Southern flavors and locally-made craft spirits and beer. Must-tries include the Du Nord favorites, like the Cafe Frida coffee liqueur and the barrel-aged Prominence Gin (*ask for a Bucket of Gin). The food? Absolutely phenomenal. The gumbo is rich and deeply flavorful, the boudin balls are immensely satisfying and hit all the right smoky notes, and the table-side Bananas Foster is guaranteed to impress. This is more than just a restaurant—it’s an experience. Whether you're here for an intimate dinner, weekend lunch or business power happy hour, this spot is bringing true NOLA energy to Minneapolis. Don't miss out!

My party made a reservation online for 3 and we arrived to be seated and were told my partner made a reservation for the cocktail room and not the restaurant. The hostess said ‘you made a reservation for the cocktail room.’ and didn’t apologize for the confusion. We asked how long would it take to get a table and they said ‘we do not have any tables but you can go to the cocktail room.’ ‘Do they have food?’ we asked. ‘Yes but it’s different.’ It took my partner asking if there was any other option to be told ‘you can sit at the bar, they have full service.’ We were handed menus and pointed at the bar unceremoniously. The whole interaction felt very lackluster and disinterested and as a first contact point of the dinner, it didn’t leave a great first impression. Also not far along after us, another party was referred to the bar after us and the other host walked the couple over and placed menus down in a kind manner. Imagine that! Once at the bar, everything else was great. Bar staff was lovely, food was very good but I will always remember how the hostess made us feel in that moment. I would give 3 stars for service but that wouldn’t be fair to the great service we got at the bar once seated. Good food, good drinks.

Had visitors from out of town and made reservations for a party of 6 on a Saturday night. We all absolutely loved it! The table shared the cornbread and southern braised greens, which were both exquisite. Several of us got the Grillades and Grits entree (pic attached): "slow cooked beef medallions, rosemary horseradish braising jus, stone ground grits, crystal onion strings." It was INCREDIBLE – so rich, so tasty, beef so tender and flavorful! The sauce is thick in a very New Orleans way, and the fried onions are thin enough to add just the right amount of crispiness without overwhelming the wonder of the beef and the creaminess of the grits. As for drinks, I got the vieux carre, a New Orleans classic with whiskey, cognac, vermouth, Benedictine and bitters, and it was perfect (Du Nord knows how to do cocktails!), and generous enough that it lasted my entire meal. For dessert, the table shared the bread pudding (with ice cream) and the Kings cake, both delicious. The service was great, the atmosphere bustling on a Saturday night but not too loud, with a pleasantly diverse crowd that showed "everyone's invited and everyone belongs" is not just a Du Nord slogan (their Cocktail Room is next door, with a more stripped down menu). It's so great to see this building renovated and the neighborhood coming back, and Lagniappe has immediately jumped onto my list of the absolute best restaurants in the Twin Cities, and it's certainly unique in bringing authentic NOLA flavors to the North!

First time dining here and will be back to try other dishes! The menu is neat, concise and doesn't go overboard with cliché creole items. I'm originally from South Carolina and I was happy to see some classics on the menu as well as new/reimagined versions of beloved dishes. Our server (cannot remember her name) was excellent! So hospitable and knowledgeable of the menu in full. The fried green tomatoes were so good - sauce tangy and smoky and the Fresno peppers along with the frisee was a nice touch. I had the grillades and grits which was also excellent. The beef was just melt in your mouth tender and the grits were great quality. I love when restaurants source good quality grits! My partner ordered the catfish des allemands and it was equally delicious. As for drinks, the hibiscus mock sour was delicious! Love the decor and feel of this place!

We had a wonderful experience. The waitstaff was so friendly and welcoming. Cocktails were strong and so good. The apple affair was like a glass of apple pie. Dinner was similarly great, both the crawfish Monica and the jambalaya were well worth getting. I can't wait to go back and try more!

We tried this place on a Friday night for dinner. The food was outstanding! We had the jalapeño cornbread, oysters (they were cooked and deliciously prepared), crawfish des allemands entree, jazz fest crawfish Monica entree, and the bread pudding. The jalapeño cornbread had a great, less gritty, moist texture and came out in a cast iron skillet - it had a perfect kick to it. The crawfish entree was a little salty but that seems to be typical with this type of entree anyway, so no big issue. The bread pudding had lots of raisins in it which usually bothers me but it was so delicious we ate it all. The service was what you’d expect from a brand new restaurant with a few kinks to sort out (orders coming out haphazardly, our turtle soup was forgotten) but our server was really friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Love this place! It feels like a hidden gem but somehow underrated. It is absolutely worth a visit. The vibe is gorgeous, with Gatsby-style glamour and a welcoming, laid-back feel. The staff are super friendly, which really adds to the experience. The Creole-inspired menu is fantastic. The grilled oysters were packed with flavor, and the shrimp and grits were perfectly done. Cocktails are beautifully crafted too. I guess it should not be surprising, given the connection to the legendary Du Nord Distillery next door. Don't be put off by the Lake Street location. There are usually plenty of street parking if the lot is full. I will definitely be back, especially for the happy hour. Great drinks and solid selection!

Yelp
What a lovely little restaurant! If I remember correctly a group of women bought and rehabbed the Colosseum building which houses Lagniappe and it's a great start to rehabbing the neighborhood - go support everyone! On to the food. I started with the HH pimento cheese. It had a bit of spice and I particularly enjoyed the lavash crackers it was served it. For dinner I had the Grillales (?) and Grits. It was described as medallions of beef and by the name I expected grilled medallions, but it was actually more of a "pot roast" style of beef, which I actually preferred (very tender!) and it went well with the grits and gravy. I had a taste of the HH fried green tomatoes which were delicious and I believe my table mates enjoyed the BBQ shrimp and grits. Good service, good drinks and a parking lot behind the building!

Yelp
We stopped in for their new brunch. They have lovely decor and the artwork ads the perfect touch. Service is good and everyone was friendly. The bananas foster French toast is delicious. The presentation is artistic. It's a little hard to cut but the flavor is very good. Get a side of cheesy grits while you're there too.

Yelp
Kicked off March with an amazing brunch at lagniappe restaurant where we enjoyed a Ginger Mimosa, Hibiscus Sour, Beignets, Bayou Hash, and Grillades Benedict. We also had the Gouda Grits. The grits were the only thing I would not recommend. Everything else was amazing and the service was exceptional.

Yelp
Beautiful decor. Great drinks, including warm beverages for these COLD winter days. Nice selection of shareable options. Service was attentive but not overly "pushy" on our first visit for brunch. I wish they offered more GF options. Will definitely return

Yelp
This review is for the dining room Fall 2024 menu. This place is so cute tucked in a bustle shopping area. It feels like a nice retreat from the busy area with the velvet curtains, fun light fixtures and mood lighting. GET: The corn bread side Jambalaya Fried Green tomatoes Crawfish Des Allemandes Other thoughts: The Crawfish pasta was very rich but had some nice subtle flavors. A good sharing dish as it can be much as a single entrée. The BBQ shrimp had a nice char and good flavor. The sauce was salty and umami. The heads and shell are on but come off very easily, just be aware there might be some crunch. The catfish is nicely blacked and baked. succulent and melt in your mouth - not overly salted. The veggies are al dente. The sauce is good and has a little spicy bite! The mussels appetizer was good but feels like the sauce is so good, it should come with grits. Mr. Paul's Supper club is slightly better flavors but prices and location for me are MUCH better at Lagniappe.

Yelp
Bee Sting cocktail - delicious sour gin hibiscus mock-marg : refreshing and light. My friend enjoys margaritas but doesn't like tequila so this was a mocktail and she was in love with it. With a little lagniappe of Yeah You Right. A lagniappe is a small little drink they give you. The definition of lagniappe literally means " a little extra " It tasted a little like whiskey but much lighter without a rough aftertaste. It was very smooth. My friend this was one of the best whiskey drinks they've had. For appetizer we tried the fried green tomatoes. It was a very generous portion! Very good and light. We then had the Crawfish Des Allemandes which was very flavorful, with lots of rice. She had the Grillades and Grits which I think was the winner of the two entrees! Cooked so well and just so mouth watering!! We had the jalapeño cornbread on the side which I could eat all day long! And lastly we had the bananas foster for dessert which was the best treat! It is cooked in front of you at the table and you learn the history of the dish. It was so exciting and so fantastically yummy! You have to get this dessert!!!!! Also the service was spectacular. The servers knew their stuff and educated us on the food and flavors. I like the atmosphere. The jewel tone colors and velvet curtains.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our experience at Lagniappe! There is not a ton of Southern food in the Twin Cities, so the New Orleans inspired menu was refreshing and unique. Our favorite things were the gumbo, jalapeno cornbread, and the Sazerac. They were just all well made and so flavorful. The redfish and catfish were also tasty, and I especially loved the collards that came on the side. The bananas foster were a bit disappointing - while it was fun to watch the table side preparation, it was very soupy and didn't develop a deep caramelization like I was hoping for. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere with interesting art and jazz playing in the background. I'd be interested in coming back for brunch to try the items on that menu!

Yelp
We were looking for something different to go try and also celebrate one of my dearest friend birthday. Then I remembered we used to love trying out southern cooking. This restaurant was the perfect place because the last time we celebrated my friend's birthday in New Orleans. Food was delicious, we definitely enjoyed the oysters. The fish was also delicious, aside from the scales. It was perfectly filet and seasoned but there were scales on the bottom. Otherwise the drinks were good and service was great. Ambiance was kind of dark but intimate, we went on a weekday so it wasn't busy.

Yelp
Came here for dinner with my partner. We were quickly seated . Nice ambiance. Waited a little longer for service but it wasn't too bad. We ordered the oysters as a starter and were also given a free snack called the "Lagniappe". Both were absolutely delicious. The oysters were perfect. Only complaint is that there were 5 of them. They were really good. For dinner I got the catfish etouffee and my partner got the Jambalaya. Both were really good. The catfish was perfectly seasoned. The etouffee could haved used more salt but including the catfish in every bite created the best balance. My partner enjoyed her jambalaya and took some home. We also ordered the cornbread. So so so good. Really excited to have this spot in the cities. A welcome addition for sure

Yelp
The servers, bartenders, and staff were all friendly and helpful! They were very attentive and everything was quick. Food menu was very small and not many New Orleans dish options as I had hoped for. Food was pretty good, but kind of underwhelming. Drinks were good. - Anthony

Yelp
I was fortunate enough to attend the soft opening of Lagniappe, which is adjacent to Du Nord Cocktail Room and owned by the same ppl. Located at 2700 E. Lake St. with direct entrance to the restaurant from Lake Street or entrance to the building from the parking lot, this restaurant is beautiful & makes you feel as if you have been transported to New Orleans. The ambiance is rich & flavorful. Starting with the painted walls, the photo wall, the feather chandeliers & wonderful color choices from chairs to wall, it's definitely giving NOLA. The service was PERFECT. My server was so pleasant, eextremely knowledgeable & had been in the industry for at least 20 years! Not new to this, but true to this! Now on to the star of the show, the food! I had deviled eggs, charbroiled oysters, bar-b-que shrimp, red fish with greens, jalapeños cornbread & and Hibiscus Margherita. I am a charbroiled oyster fan. In MN, these came as close to New Orleans as any charbroiled oyster that ive ever tasted. They weren't spot on, in my opinion, it just needed MORE butter & parmesan, but my mouth to God, I've never had anything as close to NOLA charbroiled oysters in MN as I did at Lagniappe. The deviled eggs were tasty. It gave some texture to your taste buds with a bit of crispy fried chicken as a garnish. The bar-b-que shrimp wasn't my fav, but it's served over grits. The flavor was good to both the shrimp, grits and sauce, but everyone likes grits made a certain way, similar to greens, and you can't please everyone. Heads up to anyone triggered by heads on shrimp, they're still attached. Lol My red fish has had me dreaming of it. It was tender, nicely flavored, but those greens?! Bay-bee, the greens were on point. They too were tender, not over cooked, perfect balance of vinegar, sweet, salt & seasoning. FINALLY a place in the Twin Cities were you can just order greens done right. THANK YOU! The jalapeños cornbread is similar to what some would call a loaded cornbread: with bellpeppers, jalapeños & corn. I don't recall if it was sweet, which I prefer, but I do remember it being a bit dense. The Hibiscus Margherita made an appearance to my table twice. Lol At first sip, it's strong, however, give it a stir and it's purrfect. Pssst I didn't try it, because I'm not a banana fan, but they have Banana Foster!! They have someone literally prepare the Banana Foster at your table! It's quite a show.... a mouthwatering, droolworthy show. I was going to post my video, but where's the fun in that? Go see it for yourself! Lagniappe, you will definitely see me again.

Yelp
The service was horrible. The food was brought out one at a time. The waiter did not bring any spoons for the gumbo. We had to ask several times for spoons. A member of our party asked 5 times for water with lemon and didn't receive any. She was told by the waiter to use the lemon on the side of her lemonade glass. Another person in our group asked for cheese grits. She was told that the cheese was at the bottom of the dish. She insisted that there was no cheese in the grits. We asked to speak to the manager. The manager told us that we were rude to his staff and to get the fuck out. I have never been mistreated in a restaurant like this by a general manager. I do not recommend this restaurant due to the lackluster service and the disrespectful manager!

Yelp
The atmosphere was nice and the service was very attentive. I thought the food was okay, and maybe it's because we had vegetarian dishes it just wasn't their specialty. It just tasted oversalted and a bland flavor. We tried the fried green tomatoes, okra stew, and the jalapeño corn bread. We also tried some mocktails and cocktails.

Yelp
Excellent authentic French and New Orleans food Service excellent in Central South Minneapolis

Yelp
This place rocks immensely. The service was pleasant and efficient. The offerings were plenty and the food was excellent and bountiful. Highly most highly recommend. The ambiance was warm and cordial Bill A

Yelp
I am from New Orleans - the food is NOT (emphasis added) authentic. 1. Boudin Balls would have more rice and it is not a mixture of meats. - just didn't taste correct 2. Jambalaya - never has Mussels in it nor liquid smoke - the seasoning on the shrimp was odd (best way to describe it) 3. Bread pudding is moist and doesn't have candied / caramelized apples on it 4. The pimento and cheese- while not really New Orleans- was the best item- but surely authentic would have more pimentos in it From what I was told by the wait staff, the fact that the owners and chef are not from New Orleans was definitely evident. I was told there was a "consultant"- I have to say you are not getting someone who knows what authentic New Orleans dishes would be. I didn't dare try crawfish Monica nor Drago's oysters as I was scared I would be disappointed. From what I did experience, I believe I would have been disappointed in both dishes. I applaud the trying to bring back the neighborhood, but the food missed the mark. I had high hopes, but sadly, I was let down.

Maria S.

Yelp
I enjoyed everything about this place. The decor, especially the light in the foyer, is delightful. Our cocktails were delicious. I went for my favorite Sazerac which was tasty and my companions had the Bee Sting which is so delicious! I'm vegetarian and had the Butternut squash and okra, it was creamy and spicy and just so tasty! Everyone else enjoyed their food as well. The service was great. Very attentive. We took advantage of the happy hour 1/2 off wine by the bottle! I would definitely recommend this place for a delicious taste of New Orleans.

Milagros S.

Great to have this spot in Minneapolis- great food and great ambiance - highly recommend and then end the evening at the cocktail room

Yelp
Good food and vibe. Comfy seating areas. Great place to meet with small groups of friends.
