"When I got some ube ice cream from Laina’s back in July, it was one of those times when summer wasn’t feeling summery. But after one purple, dairy-free scoop and about 45 minutes of staring longingly out towards Lake Washington from their patio, summer was back. Is ice cream a meal? My mind (and brain freeze) tells me no, but this super creamy frozen treat was as comforting as any bowl of brothy beans is in winter. And that’s saying a lot since in my circle of friends I’m known as “the bean guy.” -CM" - carlo mantuano, aimee rizzo
"This terrific Rainier Valley operation tucked into the Stonehouse Cafe serves up small batch ice cream with rotating seasonal flavors, such as Dole whip, guava, a nicely tart lilikoi, and a charcoal-flavored concoction with coconut and cocoa." - Sophie Grossman, Eater Staff
"Operating out of The Stone House Cafe in Rainier Valley, Laina’s is one of the best ice cream shops to embrace summer, and not just because they have a bunch of outdoor seating where you can stare out longingly at Lake Washington mid-lick. More importantly, their small-batch ice cream is just straight-up delicious—especially the vegan coconut milk ube that’s got a super creamy consistency. We’ve also combined scoops of their peanut butter and mixed berry, which ends up tasting like a frozen PB&J. You should also know that you can find small pints for sale at Sam Choy's." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley

"Operating out of The Stone House Cafe in Rainier Valley, Laina’s is our newest favorite ice cream spot, and not just because they have a bunch of outdoor seating where you can stare out longingly at Lake Washington. More importantly, their small-batch ice cream is just straight-up delicious - especially the dairy-free ube (made with coconut milk) that’s got a super creamy consistency. We’ve also combined scoops of their peanut butter and mixed berry, which ends up tasting like a frozen PB&J. No white bread of course. Two other helpful things to know about Laina’s - they sell all of their flavors by the pint and they’re only open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday." - Carlo Mantuano
