The Best Restaurants and Bars in Hood River, Oregon | Eater Portland

"Good things await those entering this vibrant restaurant serving homestyle traditional foods from around Mexico. You’ll be won over by the Baja-style fish tacos, served on house-made corn tortillas, with chorizo, lengua, and chicken among the other options for fillings — not to mention the gorditas, tortas, and enchiladas. Hood River locals love this spot so much that they helped to raise more than $48,000 to renovate a new location downtown, which ultimately gave them more dining room space. Grab a bite and pair it with a beer on the sunny patio." - Molly Allen

Google
Amazing. So many delicious plates. My wife loved the taco salad and I loved the salsa dipped torta. Homemade potato chips and salsa are amazing.

John Bouchey

Google
Good food. Cheesy chicken taco and chicken enchiladas were awesome.

Manuel Wanskasmith

Google
The fish tacos are excellent. Other menu items are overpriced. The enchiladas barely have any meat in them and you have to pay extra for rice and beans compared to what you would pay at comparable restaurants. They seem to be using fresh ingredients and the flavors are good, but the portions are too small for the prices they are charging. If they can correct this I would gladly try them again!

Google
Absolutely loved the food , drinks and service here! This is definitely a hidden gem 💎 we got fish tacos (best ones I’ve ever had) ❤️❤️❤️ , asada burrito (it was sooo big) and a chicken taco. If you’re looking for authentic Mexican food I definitely recommend this place!

Google
Very cute taco place located in Lake hood... I love this place and even the odd potato chips and salsa. It was different but very good. The chips were homemade. I got the veggie tacos and fish taco very flavorful.

Gretl Glick

Google
Ugh. A Mexican place which serves… kettle chips? And kind of soggy kettle chips at that? Ordered two tacos — and received tacos, but it was not the chicken and carnitas I had asked for. Tasted like the meat had been boiling for a few days. Salsa was decent. I would recommend looking elsewhere for food. :(

Google
Here’s the scoop: Homemade corn tortillas, very soft and fresh. Authentic! Lots of fresh shredded cabbage and the cream on the fish taco is good. The beer battered fish is fresh. Friendly service (husband and wife team?). Drinks are a choice if 4 Mexican mixed drinks:margarita, Paloma and a couple others. Also authentic. No beer, there are some bottled Mexican sodas. Downstairs is another business which sells local beer. But they have loud music which the sign tells you is cool, but it’s on the very alternative of the alternative side. If you sit out back it’s loud . Get a table on the front outdoor table area. Sunday menu is just tacos. They serve homemade potato chips, no tortilla chips. The red taco sauce is really good! Smoky. I’d stop here for quick tacos again if I was looking for tacos

Google
Great food, large potions, and some super awesome signs. The outdoor patio was also super colorful. The chips that came out before our meal were homemade potato chips and they were absolutely amazing and not what we expected at all!

Yelp
All time spot. They moved locations so it's way more updated. Which I appreciate, especially since the food hasn't changed either. The 'garnachas' (hope I'm spelling that right) are amazing! We had to special request it. It was an item they had back at their old location but had since left of their menu at the new location. I hope they reinstate it. Staff was so friendly and nice as always.

Yelp
Honestly not impressed by this place. Tacos are $4 and supposed to be street style so they are small. However, the tacos only come with meat (not even onions/cilantro) - which felt skimpy and cheap. I got the carne asada huarache and the huarache was pretty tasty with the homemade masa dough. But the quality of meat was disappointing - a weird texture and cheap tasting. My partner got the chorizo burrito and it was super spicy - they really should mention in the menu when something is this spicy. The restaurant was busy but honestly service was just slow. I'd pick another restaurant if I were in the area.

Yelp
This place was amazing!!! If I could give this more stars I would, our waiter was amazing and I would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Solid Mexican food joint. Fun bonus thar they provide free potato chips to start. I enjoyed my tacos and my husband LOVED his veggie enchiladas. Seating available both inside and outside. We'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
The best tacos and carne asada in Hood River. We had a snafu with the order and they took care of it like champs. Literally an amazing place to grab tacos!

Yelp
Very cute place to stop in for some tacos. Service was slow. Great ambiance and the food was good.

Yelp
Food was very good. Had a Torta made with fresh bread and well seasoned carne asada. The guacamole was excellent served with (potato) chips (unique). Service was great and fast. Ambiance - an older house converted into a small restaurant with a limited view of the river. Will come back.

Yelp
Chicken burrito: huge, somewhat bland. Should have had the tacos. Nice ambiance. I ordered to-go but probably should have taken a table. Good, friendly service.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Huarache plate was good and had plenty of meat! It had a a big home made tortilla and green salsa isn't too spicy but it was flavorful. Burrito was big. Got it with asada and chorizo. It was flavorful. Worth the price.

Maile R.

Yelp
loved the atmosphere, service was phenomenal and the barbacoa was out of this world! didn't get a photo of it sadly

Yelp
Good Mexican food. Very friendly. The homemade tortillas are incredible. We will stop again next time we are going through Hood River.

Yelp
This yummy spot was only a block away from where a gang of crazy girlfriends were staying for a couple of days of wine tasting and exploring. We all went there one evening for dinner and took our food downstairs to a very cool brewery that seems to be encouraging folks to bring their food downstairs and purchase beer / wine / or hard cider, and listen to some vintage vinyls. Back to Lake Tacos . . . I had two different tacos, a grilled fish and a grilled shrimp. They were both simple and delicious, made more so by the incredible handmade corn tortillas. I know someone in the group had a burrito and someone had a salad. Sadly, I was too focused on my incredible tacos to ask how their food was, but I can say everyone cleaned their plates. The menu seemed pretty extensive, and the staff were very friendly. They gave us all beepers to notify when our food was ready. The beer downstairs was good, and offered a good selection. Be sure to try the vibrating stool at the corner of the bar near the taps. You're in for a treat. ;)

Yelp
These lovely humans offer the best food. It was my go to for comfort food after losing my beloved puppers in 2020. I visited the old location but have heard the downtown location is great. Everyone that has had them cater has told me great things also!

Yelp
We love this place. They have table service.....which is so nice. The hot sauce is amazing. The homemade chips they bring to the table are crazy addictive and the menu items are varied. This place is friendly and has yummy food. We try to stop by whenever we are in town.

Yelp
Found this thanks to Yelp! Definitely a happy find. The feel is "hole in the wall," and that's not a bad thing - the food is so good and the people very friendly. We parked in front of the house, ordered and went through the walkway to sit outside with our pup. They were attentive and quick the whole time. The food though... we ordered the burrito. If you like spicy salsa, this is your jam! The rice is fluffy, my husband couldn't stop raving and I agreed the whole time (: Must try if near, we know we'll be back.

Yelp
When in the hood and looking for mex food ... this is THE SPOT. Not to be missed. Always great and the perfect mix of authentic vs US style. They nail. ( personal fav Are the fish tacos )

Joan W.

Yelp
We stopped here for a quick bite. The service was very friendly, they made good recommendations. Our food was very good, and generous portions. The Carne en Su Jugo especially got great reviews at the table.
google avatar

Yelp
The food and beverages are amazing. The service was great. Don't miss the chance to have the best meal ever!

Alondracmora ..

Yelp
WOW. The handmade tortillas are to DIE for. I think I got the 3 mini garnachas(?) with carne asada. Green salsa with crema and cheese both inside and on top. Bf got the fish tacos and those were also delicious. I can't believe this hidden gem is all the way in hood river, we would go every day if we could. I will be coming back whenever I do a hike in the hood river area. Out of this world good! And that's coming from a Mexican originally from Las Vegas!

Yelp
11.95 for a burrito seems really expensive, but it was a huge burrito and came with fresh potato chips, and great sauce, so the value is better than it seems...if you're very hungry or sharing. That said, as one of the other reviewers indicated the burrito was VERY light on meat, in a way that I think most people would mind. Flavors were good, but I seemed like just eating rice and beans with sour cream. The place is cute, but it is close to the road too, so while sitting outside is nice, there's a lot of street noise. I'd recommend, but there may be better in hood river.

Yelp
When you are hungry and don't want a fussy meal, tacos are the most satisfying choice for me. Especially an authentic street taco which is exactly what you can get here. Several choices of protein - fish, grilled shrimp, carne asada, chicken, ground pork - all very flavorful on their own. Even veggie tacos. I typically get carnitas because I love the carmelized bits, but their pork was ground so I opted for something completely different and ordered grilled shrimp tacos. Perfectly cooked and with lots of flavor, I added cilantro, chopped onions and lots of fresh lime and was super happy! The corn tortillas are homemade and you can immediately taste the freshness! When fresh tortillas start as the base, you know each bite is going to be good! Instead of chips & salsa, they give you freshly made potato chips and tapatio hot sauce. They were wonderful! There is also a salsa bar so you can add other toppings. The have other menu items other than tacos - burritos, enchiladas, K-sadillas, huarache, mulitas, burrito bowls, soup and more! Ask the owner for recommendations. This is a small, local restaurant with casual seating outdoors when weather is good. Order and they bring you your meal. Service is super friendly! Often when you are in Hood River your day is filled with so many other adventures that you don't have time or want to sit down for a long meal. Or if you are like me, I'm often out adventuring on my own. This is where you should refuel! Add Taco Lake to your bookmarks! And put the address in your GOS so you don't drive past it.

Yelp
Best burrito a chips Ive had anywhere. great flavor and big portions. The green salsa was very tasty as well

Yelp
Authentic fresh and so very very yummy! Will recommend and definitely come back when in the area! Thank you. Carnitas tacos the BEST!

Yelp
First time to hood river! Stopped in with our pup and they made sweet accommodations. Friendly and quick service with a clean atmosphere. Got the lake burrito and the taco salad both good and fresh. Would definitely reccomend

Rich C.

Yelp
Everything is great: service to food. I called in an order for enchiladas one day and unfortunately they were out of enchilada sauce (they had just opened for the day), but suggested they could make them verde which I actually prefer. 10/10.

Allison ..

Yelp
We found this place on our way back from a hike in the Gorge and all I can say is...we'll definitely be back! We had the tacos rancheros and a burrito. Everything was so fresh, flavorful and seasoned well. The staff were all very friendly as well. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious Mexican food!
google avatar

Yelp
Homemade potato chips tasted good but they were soggy & stale. Service was very good. Had the Lake Burrito with adobada meat and it was very good but don't expect super-authentic Mexican. The salsas & the margarita were the 5/5 stars of this place.

Heidi V.

Yelp
Definitely the most interesting and delicious Mexican food in Hood River. They make all their own tortillas and other masa products. And they're always just so nice.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
We were in Hood River for the day and grabbed lunch here. We got the shrimp taco, fish taco, and carne asada lake burrito. The shrimp taco was my favorite!! The potato chips and salsa were also amazing. Super cute place to stop in when you need a good, filling meal!

Kate L.

Yelp
Tasty food and great service. The staff is extremely nice. The menu is more interesting than your average Mexican fare. The decor is festive and appealing.

Melinda M.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I've had. Great friendly service. In Hood River on a whim and tried it out!

Yelp
We went on a Sunday with a "small menu night". Two grilled Mahi Mahi tacos... these were the BEST tacos I've had in my 50 years on Earth. Mahi Mahi was so tender! And i never knew tortillas could be so soft and chewy! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
We had Garnachas and Huaraches and tacos. Unbelievably delicious! Service was great, sit down style dining. Nice ambiance with indoor and outdoor tables.

Amy C.

Yelp
10 to 15 minutes for a beer. The experience was not cool. When I arrived there wasn't many people there. The people in front of me were asked if the wanted inside or outside. I didn't get asked and was seated VERY near the restrooms. I did get a basket of very greasy chips - no salsa. I couldn't even eat it. Ordered a mahi mahi taco. It took another 20+ minutes. No sauce, napkins, or utensils. Flavor was not all that. I didn't even drink all my beer. I'd been there long enough and wanted to get out. Won't be going back.

Yelp
The food is delicious and totally worth stopping by if you are in the area. Our server was very nice and helpful when I asked about a dog friendly, shaded spot on the patio. Luckily it was and was a great place to relax for a moment on our way home from camping.

Yelp
Lake taco pulls out the full send! Like legit some of the most amazing Mexican food I've ever had. They hook you up with homemade chips to start with a hot sauce tray. Follow that with a bomb marg and then climax with some fire food. My buddy and I visited for 4 days and ate here for all of them. The staff are super nice and chill as well. I want to teleport this place to Seattle so I could eat here every day.

Mary R.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican restaurant, and I've been to dozens. The food is amazing, and the service can't be beat. The prices are reasonable, too. Everything I've ordered has been great.

Yelp
Good Mexican in Hood River. People working there were extremely friendly. The tortillas made from scratch. We're from Southern California so we're spoiled with great Mexican food everywhere. By So Cal standards this place was average but it was still very satisfying and I would not hesitate to return when we come back to the Columbia River Gorge and had a craving for Mexican food. Three and a half stars.

Sean P.

Yelp
Have realistic expectations if you come here on a Sunday. They have a "small menu" on Sunday's which is a condensed menu with just 4 options. They have great margaritas but this night they ran out of chips and we waited over 50 minutes for our food with nothing to snack on. Food was very good though.

Wanda W.

Yelp
Love this place! Fantastic food- the carne asada tacos were excellent. Will definitely be back!

Per S.

Yelp
Have never had such bland food. There was nothing Tex mex about it. The food was cold and not filling. We got two tacos per order. Seeing photos on yelp it looks like they used to serve three tacos per order. The menu is limited so do not come if you have anyone who is picky. We left hungry and had to go out for dessert because they ran out of desserts.

Amy P.

Yelp
Nice little local vibe; no rush for good homemade food with quality ingredients. Front and back patios for outdoor dining and seating inside a cute little house. The BEST homemade tortillas I've had outside of Mexico and these might still be my favorites. Grilled shrimp and grilled Mahi tacos were both delicious and very fresh and the Garnacha was rich and cheesy. Definitely recommend Lake Taco!
google avatar

Arnab K.

Yelp
Tried their lake burrito. It was delicious and extremely filling. It came with fries which were tasty and quite different from normal fries that one typically gets in terms of shape and crunchiness.
google avatar

Olivia T.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch after a nearby hike and was really happy with what we ate. Must order is anything with one of the fresh corn tortillas - it was the highlight of everything we ate. We got a spicy pork huarache, carne asada corn K-Sadilla and pork taco. The spicy pork was a little strange because they used ground pork with spicy pastor flavoring instead of normal chunks of pork but It still tasted good and I liked the beans it came with. It was actually pretty legit spicy too. The carne asada K-Sadilla was delicious with the fresh thick corn tortilla. Full of melty cheese and meat. The meat itself doesn't have much char on it (almost seemed like it was steamed) but I didn't mind cause it was tender and not overcooked. Comes with potato chips (kinda random but I guess it's their thing). The green and red salsas were also flavorful. Cute little outdoor patio in the back.

Yelp
They accommodated a somewhat last minute catering request. The food was outstanding and the service was just as good.

Yelp
These are the Best tacos in town! I've been coming here for years and love these guys. Great food, better people.
google avatar

Michele B.

Yelp
Wow. Thank you Yelp for pointing me to this awesome hole-in-the-wall deliciousness. I got the fish tacos, my 10 yr old a pork and chicken taco, hubby got the steak burrito and our picky 8 yr old the cheese quesadilla. Homemade potato chips came first which sounds odd maybe but so good. Hubs' burrito was delish...the steak, we think, was the winning ingredient. Fish tacos were fabulous but must say almost stole the pork taco it was THAT good. TOTALLY bookmarking this for future trips. Watch out for the turn, ez to miss. Enjoy.

Yelp
A group of our friends were in town for a wedding in Hood River and found Lake Taco after we visited Evoke next door. The staff at Lake Taco were some of the friendliest staff I have ever encountered in a restaurant and the food was incredible. Between all of us, we ordered most of the items on the menu, and everyone had great things to say about their choice. The tortillas were homemade and delicious and the margaritas were some of the best I've had. A special shout-out to Luis, who helped us out the entire time and never stopped smiling. Larger groups can be very difficult to manage but he was only accommodating. Any time someone is heading to Hood River, I will recommend Lake Taco to them!!

John H.

Yelp
Great service and awesome food! Highly recommend the carne and fish tacos. The rice is the best we have had anywhere.
