The Best Food at New Orleans’s Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo | Eater New Orleans

"At Xanh I tried a rice paper salad, the Viet-Cajun crawfish bread (noted as returning from Xanh Nola chef Anh Luu), and spinach and artichoke bread, showcasing a fusion of Vietnamese and Cajun flavors." - Clair Lorell

Laksa Nola Brings Malaysian and Burmese to St. Roch Market | Eater New Orleans

"Operating out of St. Roch Market in the Marigny, I see Laksa Nola as Than Lin Regules’s effort to bring Malaysian and Burmese specialties to New Orleans; named after the fragrant noodle dish, it reflects Lin’s upbringing in Burma and her years in Malaysia. I found the laksa described as typically made with rice noodles and a slightly thicker, grittier broth (or sauce) with a sour, sweet, and spicy flavor. The menu also features familiar items like shumai and satay alongside less-recognizable dishes such as Omunoodles (Lin’s version of omusoba) and nasi lemak (rice cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaf). After a year of popping up around the city, Lin has taken this permanent spot and Laksa Nola follows the market’s hours (Sunday–Thursday 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Friday–Saturday until 11 p.m.)." - Clair Lorell

My first time inside this food court! I was delightfully, surprised to see so many good options and decided to go with Lux Nola. They have a large menu with lots of unique options that you can get elsewhere. I got the noodles. When the food came out, it was huge portion sizes, a little bit confused on the pricing since it didn’t seem to match on the menu, I think on the menu it was around $17 and some change however, the total after tax came to be around $22. The noodles are great, lots of flavor with a splash of Lime taste in it. The chicken was underwhelming, it was more on the dry and cold side. Overall, it’s a good place to get Asian food.

Google
Takin' this goodness to go, still so good a half hour later on an outdoor excursion. Crisp and clear were all the ingredients in how they interacted with one another, fresh bites and just enough flavor to savor for the holy moment. Lasting memories which I'm grateful Laksa could be a part of. Yee haw n' yippee kai-yay 🍜🍣

Tried Laksa for the first time last night. Recently discovered St Roch Market and love going there. Technically, I have had their Burmese Tea multiple times, but never the food. The lady who took my order was super friendly and helped me decide on a dish. I decided to get something called Nasi Lemak. I asked for it to-go, but it smelled so good when it arrived that started to eat it at the market. Before I knew it, I had eaten the entire thing! The gravy/sauce was mild, but flavorful. In my opinion, it reminded me of an Asian take on stew. So good! The soup featured in picture 2 was also really good. I think it had lemongrass in it. Highly recommend this restaurant as well as ALL the restaurants at St Roch Market. I've never had Burmese food before so I can't compare it to another place, but Laksa is delicious, reasonably priced, and a healthy choice.

Google
Food and atmosphere are unique but be alert about the serving employees. Lady worker didn't bother to talk. Other guy was was so rude that I lost my appetite. Not welcoming, rude answers to all food related questions. OMG. I don't know how they do business with this attitude. Or, may be I was racially profiled. Burmese attitude to a bangali, you know why. Service is so slow, if you are in hurry, don't order. I ordered at 12:07 PM, now it's 12:35 PM, food not ready yet. Finally food received at 12:40 PM, 33 minutes later.

Google
Excellent experience. Had been watching Uncle Roger so much that it finally hit me to find a Malaysian restaurant in Nola. So glad I found Laska Nola. Excellent authentic food. So flavorful. I cleaned my dish and ramekins. Stellar customer service by the owner. What more can I say? I will definitely return soon and highly recommend this gem. Thank you!

Google
Delicious Burmese food - my introduction. Nice spicy curry and lovely cold peanut noodles. Would love to go back.

Google
Try all the soups 🍲! Best laksa I've had outside of Malaysia. Very friendly and accommodating service. Outdoor and indoor seating available.

Google
I eat here every Monday after the gym and everything I’ve ordered has been delicious. But my all time favorite is the roti wrap. It is so refreshing, filling, and full of flavor. The chef has started to recognize me and has more than once given me appetizers on the house out of generosity. I really appreciate the care and effort they put into their food and it shows.

Yelp
Located in a casual food hall. $15 seemed like a slightly high price point for a food stand in this city. Got the laksa bowl which they said was their most popular dish. The broth was quite flavorful, but the chicken was so tough I left most of it uneaten. 3.5/5

Yelp
I was greeted by a friendly person behind the bar when I stepped up to order my drunken noodles with chicken. After you order, they'll hand you one of those buzzers that I associate with chain restaurants. It's super convenient because I was there with someone who'd ordered from another restaurant. This gave me the freedom to sit wherever I wanted inside beautiful St. Roch Market without having to worry about hearing my name. The chicken was moist, the flavor of the noodles was great, and there was a good portion of vegetables/garnish. My only wish is that there was more of that sauce to lap up.

Yelp
Best laksa!! Service is great and they are located in historic building. Fresh ingredients!

Yelp
Located in St Roch Market, Laksa is one the first Burmese restaurant that I have ever tried. I ordered a few dishes including the Roti Canai, Laksa Bowl and the Omu Noodles. The Laksa Bowl was my favorite and it was very flavorful. I would def come back for this. While taste may vary, I thought that the Omu Noodles were just OK- a bit sweet and sour. The Roti Canal was OK. Service was very fast and the staff kindly brought our food directly to our table, very nice of him. The atmosphere was great, typical of a casual food hall. There's only street parking.

Yelp
Counter service inside St Rock market. Customer service was lacking, staff on the phone when we approached to order. Food was hit or miss. Would not recommend.

Yelp
Located in St. Roch Market, Laksa Nola serves very delicious comfort food. I was greeted by Chef Lin who is hands on and very nice! I was hungry and got the Nasi Lemak with kingfish. This was so good! The crispy anchovy and nuts, soft egg, crispy/flaky roti went well with the rich curry and sambal. The different textures and tastes in this meal were an experience. Left happy with a happy tummy! It's unfortunate that I discovered this place on my last day in NOLA. Had I known this earlier, would have come back here multiple times. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Great food and service! The chef was so nice and gave good vibes. My 4-year old even ate a shrimp egg roll and the flat bread!
google avatar

Yelp
We swung by St. Roch Market on a rainy day and ordered some chicken and shrimp shumai ($10). It's freshly steamed and prepared on the spot after you order. The shumai are a little smaller than the size of a ping pong ball each and the plate comes with a set of 6. The sauce under the dumplings is a sweet and salty thick sauce. The sauce provided in the cup is soy sauce-based with finely minced ginger. Garnished with parsley, it's very pleasing to look at. Overall, it was yummy, but nothing phenomenal. Just regular shumai dumplings, but the sauces were flavorful and delicious. I think it's a little overpriced for 6 dumplings, I'd expect maybe $6-8 instead?

Yelp
OMG! If I lived near here, I would order from Laksa Nola all the time! I wish I could have tried more if their menu, but my stomach was destroyed from a long weekend of eating and drinking, so we tried the fresh spring rolls. They looked exactly like the photo. They tasted amazing. I will definitely be returning in future trips to try more of their menu.

Yelp
Chef Lin and her brother were so warm and nice to us. The mohinga was tasty and hearty. We particularly loved the rainbow salad. The location inside St.Roch market is clean and spotless with high ceilings. A 5-star experience for authentic Burmese food.
google avatar

Phil H.

Yelp
This is ONES PERSONS opinion but this is maybe some of the best dang food I've ever had (Laksa and Nasi Lemak). I'm literally taking some to go on the airplane back home! Maybe I can ask Chef Lin to fly out come cater my wedding . PS... I can't handle spice. Level 1 has me sweating but worth it.
google avatar

Tin Z.

Yelp
A hidden Burmese gem in NOLO Chef Lin Lin opened a Burmese food stall inside St Roch Market food hall in New Orleans. Despite laksa in the name, most dishes are Burmese. She has a few Malaysian dishes and her own creations too (like omu noodles). Her Burmese dishes are authentic and delicious. I didn't get to try other dishes. While you are there, check out her other stall Lin's Kitchen as well.

Yelp
The Asian kid in me was looking for a taste of home and found it stumbling around St. Roch Market (a pretty diverse selection from any food court of that size and stature) Grab some dumplings and viet-style coffee on our way out.

Izzy S.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Burmese taste Cant believe a non Burmese chef made this tea leaf salad This shop made me feel like I am in Myanmar Love the noodles they used for coconut noodles One of the fav restaurants I have found in my New Orleans Vacation Must Go there for Asia taste Favorite part is big portion for foodie like me
google avatar

Yelp
We ordered the Rainbow salad and lettuce bowl, both with tofu. Flavors were amazing, staff was friendly. It's in a market with other restaurants, so lots of options.
google avatar

Keely A.

Yelp
The Rainbow Salad is by far my favorite dish in all of nola!!! I have been to every Thai restaurant in this city and Laksa is where it is at!! Do not miss out on this family owned, delicious and most importantly clean restaurant! They also own the sushi spot at the front of the market and the sushirito has kept me going during my pregnancy. The crunch is amazing and the ingredients are so fresh. Wish I could give this place ten stars!

Yelp
We went on a Friday evening around dinner time for take out, so we would have thought it would be the best time to go. Instead we got omu noodles that were okay, if cold, but the chicken tasted old. Got a stomach ache from the meat/eggs, not looking forward to tomorrow. The curry was slightly below passable, but a little gross and oily. The beef also tasted old and was questionable. We could not finish this meal, and threw most of it away after tasting the meat and fearing for our stomachs. We're thankful we didn't risk getting the shrimp or salmon, but it would have probably ended up in the same place. The only thing we were able to finish was the roti, which tasted good, but it is kind of hard to mess up bread. I am not sure how this place got so many 5 star reviews, maybe a weekend night isn't the time to go here. Be aware that this place doesn't really have a kitchen, it is more like food trucks that have opened stalls. So they cook their meat on hot plates and stuff. While the place looks clean/nice, and the location is pretty good, you could find better noodles for a cheaper price at a really great Thai place in walking distance. The service wasn't bad, but they got slow with just a few orders. We don't mean to be mean or negative just because, but wanted to warn someone in case they're hungry and this meal might not work out for them either.

Ivan Y.

Yelp
Laksa Bowl is so good Thai tea is also phenomenal Roti canai as well 10/10 recommended

Courtney L.

Yelp
Lovely flavors and yummy food! I had the Rainbow Salad with tofu as my protein (non-vegetarian protein options include chicken and shrimp). Their spice level is 0-3. I got 2, which I expected to be medium spicy, but it was definitely more on the mild side. Felt more like a noodle dish than a "salad," and it's a good option over their hot soups considering the warm weather lately! I've also had the Laksa Bowl with chicken (you can also choose shrimp) and rice noodles (egg noodles are your other option). Delicious! And it came with a hefty portion of protein. My only complaint is that the noodles were over boiled and they were soggy/mushy, making them hard to eat with chopsticks. It would've been perfect had they been chewier and not overcooked! One other thing I noticed is that compared to the other vendors at St. Roch Market, Laksa staff doesn't bring you your food. Someone will just yell your name (very) loudly and that will be your cue to go get your dish lol. Looking forward to trying more dishes soon!
google avatar

Nila S.

Yelp
We tried a few dishes from Laksa and found it to be a pleasant experience. Everything was well cooked and prepared to be enjoyed in the open seating marketplace with many other restaurants as well. The thai iced tea was a bit watered down from teas I've traditionally tried. Overall, a good visit.

Yelp
After attempting to order via the Yelp app, with no luck, and a phone call that went unanswered, I was finally able to successfully place an order on their website for pickup. After a text confirmation, I make the quick trip over to St Roch Market and found a parking spot near the front door on a quiet, rainy Monday evening. I let the two staff members know that I'd placed an online order. I could tell by watching them work that there was an order or two ahead of me, so I made my way down to the Mayhaw bar for a "happy hour" old fashioned while I waited. My order was ready a few minutes later (ten minutes earlier than promised on the website). Five minutes later I was home with my Burmese coconut soup with shrimp, onu noodles with chicken and a side of roti. Everything was hot, fresh tasting and delicious! I'd definitely order from Laksa Nola again when I'm in the mood for some tasty noodles and/or coconut soup.

Sam B.

Yelp
Amazing and authentic Burmese/Malaysian food in NOLA!! This place is a must try. We tried the coconut noodles, rainbow salad, and chicken nasi lemak. Chef Lin (owner) was incredibly kind and accommodating. Will definitely come back when visiting the area.
google avatar

Miranda A.

Yelp
The omu noodles were a hit! The 3 stars comes from the drunken noodles being bland, noodles tasted over cooked and not much sauce on it. Service was good though.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
Awesome. Chef made me the noodles without fish sauce. Huge portion, genuine heat, peanut sauce, ample veggies, egg in top. Took about ten minutes to prepare. Best Asian dish I've had in New Orleans so far. Chef/owner was very nice and wanted my feedback on the dish.
google avatar

Yelp
Great new addition to the St. Roch market serving Malaysian and Burmese food. Being a total virgin to Malaysian and Burmese cuisine I looked for something familiar and settled on the Shrimp Eggrolls and Laksa Bowl with Chicken. The eggrolls were delicious, served steaming hot and packed with shrimp and the three dipping sauces are a fun way to expand the flavor profiles of the dish. For my Laksa Bowl I selected the egg noodles and level 2 spicy level. The Bowl come out hot and the broth was a great blend of flavors with a wonderful aroma that made each spoon fill a burst of flavors. The chicken that accompanied the noodles was also good but I wish it had been sliced and placed in the bowl with the noodles and broth. There was also a bit of the cold noodle salad on the plate with the chicken that was absolutely yummy and I would pay for a whole bowl of that alone! The teas are very refreshing and I recommend you do a blend of the two. Really looking forward to trying all the other dish and wishing Laksa Nola and chef Lin much success.
google avatar

Lucy M.

Yelp
Really love this spot; a mix of Malaysian & Thai cuisine, you will definitely feel the heat! I came back for their curry laska with shrimp - by far the spiciest thing I've eaten in New Orleans. The broth is creamy and spicy, with cucumbers and red onions to add a nice crunch of texture. Perfectly cooked eggs and tender shrimp. They also serve drunken noodles or Pad Kee Mao, made right with fish sauce, oyster sauce, and Golden Mountain sauce.
google avatar

Khine Z.

Yelp
Delicious ~~ Got my nostalgia fixed with Nan Gyi Thoke and shrimp spring rolls. We also ordered Omu noodles, which tasted like Lo Mein with a light curry sauce. If you visit St. Roch Market, definitely give Laksa Nola a try.
google avatar

Alyssa S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious best salad ever!! I haven't been here in a while but it's the absolutely the best salad. The person who made the salad was super sweet and helpful
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
St. Roch Market strikes again, with another out-of-this-world little spot that hit the mark. Laksa's Malaysian and Burmese cuisine was the perfect thing for a cool autumn night. I had the Omunoodles and my wife had the Laksa bowl, and we both loved it. Halfway through we swapped dishes because we couldn't believe that the other's dish could be this tasty ... but it was. And, here's the bonus: we bought our food and then drove home to Baton Rouge, and it kept perfectly the whole way.
google avatar

Kim Nhat H.

Yelp
Amazing food! Bright and flavorful with a kick of spice at the medium level! I got the Nan Gyi Thohk salad which was soo delicious! My companion got the Nasi Lemak which he thought was great with perfect spice and good flavor, reminiscent of Tikka Masala to him. The atmosphere of St Roch's market was also great Totally adding this place to my list of favorites for NOLA Asian food!
google avatar

Dawn M.

Yelp
It's hard to really rate the meal when Grub Hub gets involved. It wasn't hot. Not even warm. The meal came in separate pieces of foil and plastic containers- so I had to put it together and microwave it and still paid $15. Nope. My friend's had less to put together but, not hot. The chicken had a weird texture. What does freeze dried chicken taste like? Asking for a friend. It wasn't rubbery like over cooked, not boiled...just odd. Nope, can't do it.
google avatar

Marielle S.

Yelp
It was my first time really venturing out into *the world* when I decided to stop into St. Roch Market for lunch. I was relieved to see that they were asking customers to "mask up", so I put on my cute homemade mask and decided to see what I was in the mood for. Selection was limited, but I was delighted to see Laksa NOLA was open serving tasty Burmese food. Looking over the menu, I knew I wanted noodles and spring rolls. I got the Laksa Bowl with chicken and it was basically a ramen-like bowl packed with an egg, tofu, bean sprouts all swirling around in delicious broth. They also give you a special sauce on the side, if you're looking for some kick. The spring rolls are shrimp spring rolls and they are very light and served with Laksa's special sauce. They were delicious! The staff here was beyond friendly and did everything they could to make me feel comfortable throughout the entire process. The food was amazing and I couldn't have been happier with my experience.
google avatar

Katie N.

Yelp
I've had my eye on this place for the longest time and finally dropped by to try it. The market was a little loud so I had trouble hearing the guy taking my order. He kept having to repeat himself but he was really patient with me without getting angry so I'm thankful. I got the Chicken Satay as an appetizer and combination Laksa bowl. Chicken was perfectly cooked and flavorful. [I hate it when places overcook chicken and it tastes rubbery.] The laksa bowl broth was delicious and had a mild hint of coconut and spice (I got a level 2). Portions were generous enough that I had to get a to-go box for my leftovers. Overall would go again the next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Naomi L.

Yelp
I hadn't been to St. Roch Market for a minute, but saw some of the reviews for Laksa and decided to pop over. We've been twice now (the second time bringing other people with us who have traveled to Burma) and both times were wonderful! The dishes were made fresh to order and were on point! Lin makes the menu really customizable, which was appreciated since we like our food spicy. She even kindly obliged by making some of the dishes spicier than her "typical level 3." I love a proper spice level that makes me sweat and my nose run, but doesn't burn my mouth or give me reflux. The hubs and I traveled to Malaysia years ago and we haven't had good, authentic Malay food since then honestly. The portions are huge, larger than we expected, and we ended up having quite a bit of leftovers to eat the next day. One cannot get more deliciously cooked food for their money! My mouth is watering just thinking about being able to go back.
google avatar

Suf L.

Yelp
Recently got back from a SE Asia trip and have been craving its food since. Luckily, I stumbled upon this booth in the market. Everything tasted really fresh. I loved the spring rolls; you can get them with crab or keep it all veggie. I got a noodle dish, and they give you an option to have rice or egg noodles, which is really nice. Then you select a protein to go with it. I also got a Thai iced tea, and in total, it was around $30. Well worth it!
google avatar

Genevieve F.

Yelp
I'm stuffed. I got the shrimp lettuce wraps and they were bomb-diggity. They have lettuce and cucumbers and shrimp and carrots and an amazing sauce that was sweet and savory and absolutely filled me up. It is Burmese and Malaysian food abs I honestly need more of this in my life.
google avatar

Maddy M.

Yelp
Oh my goodness. Delicious exoticness awaits you at this relatively new addition to the St. Roch Market. Serving up Burmese and Malaysian dishes. This place will hit your Asian food craving spot. Chef Lin is so sweet and talented, if youre lucky enough to catch her behind the counter. While I wanted to eat the entire menu and hopefully will soon enough I ended up with the Omu noodles and shumai. The ground chicken and shrimp shumai were perfectly steamed and deliciouswith the go her dipping sauce. Seriously I cannot pass up a dumpling or the like. And the Omu noodles were something completely different all together. Egg noodles tossed in some sort of special sauce with vegetables and your choice of chicken or shrimp ( or vegan). Topped with an omelet? And you pick your spice level 1-3. Delicious down to the last bite. Such a treat to eat here. Reasonable prices. And vegan options!!! Win win win
google avatar

Paul M.

Yelp
Wow. This is insanely good. I wanted to investigate St. Roch Market and very glad I chose this over some of the other tasty options. Ordered the Laksa bowl and added a shrimp. The curry broth is excellent. Egg and tofu in there is a nice touch. The cucumber is shredded but still a fine texture that matches the rice noodles which are flash boiled when ordered. The shrimp is SO light and fresh. I think there were 5 or 6 nice sized shrimp added. $15 total. I think she quickly flash boiled those too. Texture of the rice noodles was amazing. Lime wedge is nice and her hot chili sauce on the side is awesome and hot! This is a true gem. .

Yelp
I was super excited to finally try this place out in person, since it is in an area that is pretty out of the way from where I live. First glance, I saw all of the wonderful menu options and I decided to order a Combination Laska. Also upon payment, I noticed the credit card machine was kind of weird. Most places use the credit card chip slot since it is the security standard. The guy just kept repeating for me to slide the card, which was not really helpful since the sliding slot was unlabeled and was this small gap that blended in between the screen of the machine. I watched the lady behind me struggle with the same issues. My counter service experience was not exactly people friendly. Maybe he was having a rough day? It was just a strange, uncomfortable experience. Ok next! I finally get home to put the bowl together and I threw in the sauces and heated up the soup. I was actually a little disappointed by the lack of flavor. The soup itself was really over powered by the rich and heavy broth. The flavor also seemed to be missing a little bit of fresh zing and zesty-ness for me. I have tried this when I was in Asia before and it kind of reminded me of a coconut version of tom yum soup with noodles. I am not sure I would get this again. I felt like it was not worth the money I paid for this dish. Another dish that I have tried here is the Drunken Noodle. This version had a nice flavor with a variety of noodles, veggies and meat. I was not a huge fan of the texture of the flat noodles used in this dish though. Overall, if you have not had this type of cuisine before, you should at least give it a try. For me, it just isn't worth the long distance and the trouble to get there.

Yelp
Had the Chicken Roti Curry and the Dumplings and both were super delicious, very filling, one of the best things I've eaten in a while.

Yelp
Food not great. Try elsewhere . Service not great. In a good hall setting .............................

Yelp
We ordered dinner to go from here tonight, our first time in St. Roch market since the "rona" shut things down. While it was sad to see a few empty stalls, it was great to taste some yummy food. I got the noodle dish with 2/3 on the spicy factor. 3 words to describe it - de. lish. us! I'll definitely get that again. My partner ordered the soup. It was also delicious and a unique flavor combo. I hope they do well over the next months, we'll do our part to support.

Brad J.

Yelp
The food is tasty. That said, everything else makes me not want to patronize this business again. - The chef who took our order was impatient and rude. - There are nickel-and-diming upcharges for everything from protein to making your meal to-go. $12.99 for a single entree gets to $19 very quick. - It took 40 mins for 2 entrees to be made.

Allison Z.

Yelp
Consistently delicious food and always seems super fresh. Rainbow salad is my personal favorite!
google avatar

Jiwon H.

Yelp
Chef Lin is so cute and nice. I have never tried Malaysian food before and I am so glad that I was introduced to the cuisine through Lin. I ordered based on her recommendation. Laksa bowl and Rainbow salad were both great. I do want to go back and try other dishes on the menu for sure.

Yelp
Mmmm...this is my second time grabbing food from here and both have times have been great! First time I had a roti wrap and this time I got the Burmese Coconut soup! Really liked the roti wraps, but this soup is amazing. Huge, flavorful bowl! The chef is so sweet too

Yelp
Husband is Singaporean so had to stop by on our New Orleans trip to try the Malaysian food. The Laksa was the stand out dish- the broth was savory and the noodles had a nice chew to it. We got a side of the chicken which had a nice char siu flavor and came with some shrimp chips. The lasi nemak was just ok- the roti was the pre-packaged one that I have purchased from 99 Ranch before so not authentic or homemade. Also took a long time for the food to come out- the owner left the worker alone by herself so she had to take orders and put out the food. At one point I think she was so far behind she stopped taking orders. Not the best idea during the dinner rush.

Natalia B.

Yelp
Foodies, this ain't it. At least when it comes to omu noodles. Ours came out with a fried egg on top, not even an omelet. The sauce is sweet and basic, tastes like something you can get off the shelf in a regular store. Veggies are the pre-cut kind, especially the carrots. Might have been the frozen kind. We got shrimp with ours, and these were not great, either. Feeling very let down. :|
