The 10 Best LA Restaurants With Free Table Bread, Ranked

"Truthfully, the actual table bread at this Argentinian mini-chain (there are also locations in Studio City and DTLA) is fairly unremarkable, but it’s on this list because of the incredible chimichurri dipping sauce that comes on the side. It’s garlicky, herbaceous, and slightly spicy, with a slight kick of acidity at the end. Never mind a random basket of white bread, this dip would make a gym sock taste good." - brant cox

LALA’S On Melrose Review - West Hollywood - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"With three locations across town, LALA’s is one of the better-known Argentinian restaurants in LA and the kind of place where cheese and pasta are deemed appropriate starters to a hefty steak dinner. We particularly love the provoleta – the bubbling skillet of melted provolone cheese that’s seasoned with oregano and pico de gallo. Besides being a gooey vat of cheese that we want to shamelessly ladle over everything, it isn’t overwhelmingly heavy with the herbal sweetness from the oregano and needed acid from the salsa. If you’d rather start and end your meal with meat, go for the smoky morcilla (blood sausage) to start; it has a wonderfully salty, almost metallic aftertaste that’s unique in the best way. The tabla de carnes is definitely the move for the table and comes out to just enough meat for two to three people. This spread includes tender skirt steak, filet mignon, and New York strip, all of which come out nicely medium rare with your choice of sides." - Sylvio Martins

Google
You don’t often see an Argentine restaurant in LA. The other place I liked was in the Valley called Corriantes 348 in Tarzana. Another one called Carlitos Gardel in Fairfax district. Finally I get to try this popular place! I was craving Bife de Chirizo and they had exactly that in their lunch special for $17.95! The menu said lunch special comes with 1 sides but it turns out you can select a carb rice, mashed potato or fries - and a sides. Even better! The location is in the vibrant part of Melrose. I went to a quasi-holiday, so traffic was light. I was able to find parking on street right away. I imagine it won’t be as easy other days. They offer you indoor or outdoor seating. Today being a nice summer day, everyone is seated ‘outdoors’ patio but shaded area. It was nice. I small item I noted is the tip % on the machine is computed against the after tax bill. Not sure if that’s a glitch. I hope they set it to be based on food bill only as is the norm. I’ll try out the Happy Hours days next time!

Google
Great friendly staff. Steak was cooked perfectly(med rare). Rice and mashed potatoes were delicious. Open air dining, the heaters were set too high. Traffic was a bit loud. Overall good food, and wonderful service.

Google
Some of the best Argentinian food in La, meat was yummy, service was quick and friendly and was easy to get a table. Would recommend for a lunch or dinner, and don’t skip dessert the caramel crepes are insane. Will definitely be back

Google
Blas was seriously the best. So professional, super friendly, and kept checking in on us the whole night to make sure we had everything we needed. You could really tell he cared, and that made such a difference. Thanks to him, we had an amazing time celebrating birthday with friends and family. It honestly couldn’t have gone better. The food was amazing as usual. And huge thanks for the drink recommendations too. They paired so well with the meal and made everything feel extra special. Can’t wait to come back. Blas, you made our night! Thank you so much.

Google

Google
Glad to see this place finally reopened so I had to come back and check it out. Food was still good, though not as good as it used to be before the renovation. Particularly the mushroom sauce that I used to love. The texture and taste weren't the same, more watery and bland this time. Hopefully it will all come back coz I missed this place. Servers were very nice and kept checking on us though.

Yelp
Highlights: skirt steak! Their skirt steak is honestly better than what I've had at some high-end steakhouses. It's juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The chimichurri sauce? Absolutely top-notch. It's fresh, tangy, and the perfect match for the steak. This place nails it every time. Highly recommend if you're craving great Argentine food without the hefty price tag!

Yelp
HAPPY HOUR!!! Their drinks are always greatly affordable and simple, but the food on the happy hour menu is the best part. $3.50 empanadas, and we happened to be there on a Tuesday which is BOGO empanadas! The 3oz filet mignon is melt in your mouth amazing. Chorizo is perfect too. Both served with super fresh tomatoes. Their Sangria was simple but yummy. Empanadas hot and tasty. It's a little noisy being on a busy street, but it was nice being outside with the breeze, even on a hot day. Server was super friendly and attentive. Checked in on us quite often and was quick to provide what we request. I can't wait to come back, seriously, try the filet mignon.

Yelp
Food was really good and the server/bartender (we sat at the bar) was very cool - checked on us and also made recommendations. We came on a Friday and it wasn't too busy so we were seated right away. The complimentary bread with the chimichurri is sooo good. We ordered the Patagonia shrimp which was very yummy. And the chicken milanesa with fries and salad (comes with two sides). For dessert, we split the affogato. This was enough to split between two people. We'll def be coming back.

Yelp
I must say that this was a very welcoming and enjoyable visit - our server (Blas?) went above and beyond. The whole experience and ambience was relaxed and fun! We tucked into our empanadas (2 for 1 on Tuesdays before 6) and forgot to take a pic!! Mrs G enjoyed a red Sangria while I devoured two Margaritas! Mrs G had the mahi mahi while I had the (special?) Brazilian steak (Picana) with LOTS of fries. All in all a really fun and relaxed early dinner and this is essentially local to our new home in Beverly Hills and so we WILL be back regularly I am sure. Tasty food and drinks, great service and a fun indoor/outdoor experience with street parking ($2 for 2 hours) without price sticker shock!!

Yelp
4 for groups, ambience and service. 3 for food. I have been hearing the hype about Lala's since the 90s, but had never been. It was a dear friends bday and their crew used to frequent here in the 90s. So we celebrated here and it was perfect on a weekday for a large group 10+ outside patio in the back corner nice and quiet and easy to converse. The service was great. Really nice people. And they gave the bday person a birthday candle packaged with Lalas name etc. Such a unique touch!!! Loved that. Parking was easy as we scored a meter right outside the restaurant but I imagine that's not normal! So I'd probably uber here vs drive. The food for me was just ok. We split the imported tariff free rib eye from Argentina. It did not live up to the hype sad to say. I have my rib eye spots and sadly this won't be one of them. The mashed potatoes were a bit watery and no flavor and the spinach had no flavor either. The chimmichurri was delicious but the bread should be served warm. I'll give it another try but my first time was not a win.

Yelp
I had a first date there for lunch. It was the perfect place. Quiet enough that we could talk but engaging enough with the thoughtful staff that it was fun and not at all awkward. The staff was attentive and really on top of it and our food was delicious. I'm not a big fan of steak but they had lots of selections as an alternative. I had the shrimp Patagonia as an entree and it was the most tender shrimp that I have ever had. It was so juicy and flavorful. I also had the fries which were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My date had the salmon which was cooked perfectly. We had a great time and I will definitely go there again. Also we had a good time and are going to see each other again. The parking is rough. They do have valet but the lot is small so get there early or take an Lyft.

Yelp
I LOVE Lala's Argentine Grill! I used to frequent the downtown restaurant and didn't realize it was on the west side until recently! Came here for lunch with a friend and was pleasantly greeted by the staff. The restaurant wasn't busy due to it being a lunch time on a weekday and we were able to pick where we wanted to sit. The restaurant is spacious and has seating outside as well just in case you want to get some fresh air while you eat. Since we were there for lunch, I ordered the chicken with a side of mashed potatoes and salad while my friend got the steak sandwich. Both options were delicious and were huge portions for the price. Everything was so flavorful. If you're looking for a delicious restaurant with great choices, I definitely recommend!

Yelp
We came in with low expectations based on mixed feedback since the reopening but we ended up having a great time. The plato mixto easily fed three adults and was a highlight. The chicken skin was crisp and flavorful, the skirt steak a bit overcooked but the New York was spot on. The only miss was the morcilla; too soft in texture and likely a prep issue. What really stood out was the warm hospitality, especially from Misael and Horacio. For drinks, stick to beer and wine. I truly hope they gain momentum. Melrose Ave could use a win with so many great spots closing. Authentic flavors and more affordable cuts of meat vs competition.

Yelp
The hospitality as soon as I walked in those doors as on point. Friendly staff and my server was nice and welcoming. I ordered the Calamar Frito (fried calamari) that came with a tartar sauce and tomato sauce which was insanely good. Perfectly battered and not chewy. The chorizo sandwich was pretty good. The chorizo mostly, the sandwich was pretty standard. Lettuce tomato and chimichurri. The fries were cooked to perfection in my opinion. The place was pretty chill, and quiet at the time I went. I got to sit in the patio which had a tarp with a clear opening to see through yet protect you from the elements. Glad I finally got to check out the restaurant.

Yelp
Best Blue cheeseburger I've ever eaten. Cool spot friendly service. I'd say you can't go wrong coming here. Im glad I read the other reviews Yelpers rule. If in the Melrose area stop here highly recommend. Time to get the yelp out of here

Yelp
So glad to have Lala's back. They reopened the dining room ahead of schedule but the patio section is still not ready. Everything is brand spanking new and the food was delicious with warm service. Still a great price for a well prepared steak. Bathroom is shiny and new but doesn't smell great already. Could use better ventilation and maybe a urinal puck. No touch water faucet was also scalding hot, so that should be adjusted as well.
google avatar

Juan Manuel E.

Yelp
Food was amazing and the strawberry margarita was out of this world. Ambiance was great and you can take ur fur baby with you sit in the patio. Our server Adrian was amazing as well as the hosts and runners. Top notch.

Yelp
Looking for something between fine dining and fast food, this is your place. A great go to restaurant.

Yelp
This location is smaller than the studio city location, parking is much easier though. We went for the Dine LA menu which we thought was a steal. It comes with a drink that's refillable; the starters are amazing especially the mushroom skillet; I liked my salmon better than my husband's steak for the entree - steak was quite mediocre to me, lots of fat and cut very thinly. The desserts were very yummy - flan and crepes - but we were superrrr fully by then so we decided to take them to go instead. Our server was pretty attentive joined by his other colleagues. Would def visit again but prob will try other things on the menu.

Yelp
I've been to Argentina and dined at Don Julio, but WOW ! I was duly impressed with the steak at Lala's! I ordered the tabla de Cannes - 3 different steaks - Filet, skirt and NY Strip - all delicious! Started with bread and chimmichurri and beef and chicken empanadas. Lala's steaks are really delicious.
google avatar

Arielle G.

Yelp
We love Lala's! What made the food & experience even better is Luwam and Santi. Luwam had such an amazing energy to be greeted with. The ambiance was romantic despite a busy Saturday evening. We had the Castello steak and a delicious salmon Caesar salad.

Yelp
I absolutely love Lala's on Melrose and the one in Studio City. They treat you like family, the food is good, the ambiance is peaceful, prices are perfect, and everyone there is sweet and very loving. I am so happy that i am able to go there once a week to see my Lala's family. Lola.

Yelp
NATALIA!!! La mejor server. Can't wait to come back and see her again! She made the whole experience 10x better than expected. The food was just as delicious as always. I love being here. The vibe is always immaculate thanks to the employees.

Yelp
Tonight I dined at LaLa's in Melrose. I had received a gift card to it and I was excited to go back since they reopened. Unfortunately I had an unpleasant experience dealing with payment. The cashier was having an issue inputting the gift card. He either didn't know how to do it or there was some other issue but I was patient while he tried to troubleshoot. But when it wasn't working the cashier asked if I had another form of payment. Of course I did because the gift card only covered a portion of it but I asked him if he wasn't going to honor the gift card. He said that he was having an issue and that the person in charge wasn't there and wouldn't be back until tomorrow. I told him that it wasn't my problem and that he needed to call someone to figure it out. It took about 15 or so minutes for him to make whatever call he needed to make and figure it out. I don't mind that I had to wait. I had been patient already but he was rude about it and I didn't appreciate it. He ruined my dining experience and I don't think I will be back to this restaurant. The food was good. The Melrose salad was good, we enjoyed it. The entraña I ordered wasn't cooked to the specification I asked for but it was still good and enjoyed it with the mashed potatoes. The Sangria was delicious. The lava cake was not good. It was not cake at all but some other consistency and it lacked flavor. I would not get again. The server was okay, not terrible but not great either. Overall the experience at this establishment was not very good. This restaurant has lost its charm for me. I used to love this place, sadly I won't be going back. I hope they hire better staff and better management to run this restaurant that was once a great place to dine at.

Yelp
My family and I are so excited that LALAs is back in this side of town. The place looks cool, modern with a playful ambiance. The food is as delicious as it was or even better. We didn't get to take much pictures as we were enjoying the whole experience : great seating, pan con chimichurri, and of course the red Sangria! , cheers. All the dishes were phenomenal! Want pictures, come and take a bite!! Today, we are experienced desserts, and do leave some room! Delicious

Yelp
I come here all the time for dinner and order food on my lunch brakes. I called to see if I can order the happy hour to go, the lady said uhhh we don't do that it's only for inside dinners and then I said oh I'm sorry and before I was about to continue ordering she said uhh bye and hung up. I've came here before it was on fire and that definitely switched up my feelings about coming back thanks for that rude experience

Jaylene S.

Yelp
Food was great. Blas is the best server out there I've had in a while at any restaurant. His service is amazing got our food out fast and attended us a lot to make sure we had everything we needed. He needs a raise for sure !

Yelp
Great heathy reasonably priced meal. Feels like family made it.. Try the provoleta. Their chimichurri is EVERYTHING.

Yelp
Delicious food, friendly service and good ambiance My family loves this place and we like to visit the restaurant frequently

Yelp
My favorite Argentine restaurant... the food is amazing and the staff are great. The Milanese is great with rice and salad.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant! Will definitely frequent while in LA. I ordered the 1/2 POLLO A LA BRASA with rice and mash potatoes which was $18.95 and my husband ordered the ENTRAÑA AL AJO with salad and mashed potatoes that was $36. A bit pricy for the portion but overall the taste was worth it. We shared a pitcher of sangria. Everything was mouth watering. My chicken was crisp and juicy and I absolutely wish I ordered more rice fully and flavorful. My husbands steak was cooked to perfection and went well with the salad. After completing our meal the waitress talked to us for a while and she was a delight! She made great food recommendations and had a personality of someone that was inviting so we loved the feeling. They are doing remodeling but it didn't disturb the flow of the service. This restaurant is a Must try!!!!

Camila N.

Yelp
The best Argentenian spot in LA. Tastes traditional and everything was absolutely delicious. Service was very excellent and fast, and the ambiance is so beautiful. Our server was so kind. The empanadas were also amazing!! Can't wait to come back :)

Yelp
My Mom and I were patrons of Lala's on Melrose 20+ years ago. We would grab food to go. Parking was nonexistent, so I would go in and she would sit behind the wheel in case she needed to move the car. Yes, it was that serious, because their food was that good. Not having been in ages, I noticed Lala's on a food delivery app. I ordered and man... it is as good today as it was then. I ordered a NY steak, half-rice and half-fries. It came with chimichurri, which is SO delicious, and the softest, freshest sliced French bread. This was my dinner after spending nearly 2-days straight in the hospital with my Mom. (No Lala's for her this time. :-( ) It was such a blessing. It arrived cooked perfectly, still hot, fresh and delicious. I look forward to ordering from Lala's again soon. Thank you for being consistent.

Imelda M.

Yelp
We had a great time celebrating my daughter's graduation. The waiters were very attentive and came by to congratulate my daughter. The meat and sides were all great sizes and delicious!!
google avatar

Jim K.

Yelp
Me and my family (from BA) have been coming here since it opened decades ago. Came here last nite and the reboot is fantastic!! I'm ecstatic that they reopened and the spot looks and feels great! The star and happy surprise was the Milanese. In the past I felt it was a little too salty for my taste and compared to my mom's (RIP) well, you know. But, last night I can say it was up there with what I grew up with, sheer perfection! Bravo! Can't wait to come back and try the noquis. Service was exemplary!
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
Very happy this place is back, especially since it's slightly better than it was before (and it was really good before). Had my usual: the Suprema sandwich and mashed potatoes, and while the sandwich was just as tasty as I remember it, the mashed potatoes were better. They had more flavor. And they were really good before. As for the place itself, the outdoor part looks the same as before, but the inside is much nicer and more open. Which means you can go there on those odd days when L.A.'s weather isn't conducive to sitting outside. Or on an open patio with a roof, as the case may be. Lastly, the staff were friendly, but again, they always were. Needless to say, I shall be back, and soon.
google avatar

Amnon A.

Yelp
Wow! Been here many times and never bothered to give it a review. It was closed for a long time for remodeling and just recently reopened. So glad it did! The atmosphere is so nice and the food is outrageously good!! Don't fill up on the bread and chimichuri - leave room for the best provoleta (cheese!) and champignons (mushrooms). My favorite entree is the skirt steak with the mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes. And don't forget dessert!! Love this place don't miss it! They also have an amazing staff that doesn't forget about you and are very attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the filet mignon Excellent choice always cooked to perfection , great time great atmosphere great staff always asking you how everything is. They're on top of their game always coming back to get my protein.

Yelp
The Food is delicious and the drinks are spectacular. We loved it so much we had to go back 2 days later and it didn't disappoint. Will be a regular for us.

Yelp
I've brought two out of town friends here and ordered the same thing both times just because the first time was so good that I repeated everything. We got seated in their covered outdoor space which was great because it was covered but allowed me to bring my dog there. It was a nice area minus the pigeons that occasionally flew in. What we got was the Plato Mixto, that was like a sampler of all their meats and two sides. I asked our server what she would recommend as a side and she mentioned the mashed potatoes and salad. My friends and I both thought that having a green of some sort would be beneficial so we went with her suggestions. So, everyone, staff included says their chimichurri is delicious. While it was delicious with the starting bread and chimichurri...No disrespect but I didn't use that much of it after that because their meats were cooked so well that I didn't think I needed it at all. None of the meats were bad BUT I'll say that the skirt steak was just so flipping delicious that it made me wonder why it's overshadowed by NY strip or ribeye. I enjoyed the sweetbreads and my friends who had never heard of it before also agreed that it was tasty-always glad to have people see the magic over offal cuts.

Yelp
I'm so thrilled LALA's Argentinian is open again! I missed this amazing spot. I love the empanadas, steak & fries, sangria, and flan!
google avatar

Yelp
We are so happy that Lala's is back! It had closed before we moved out of LA, and we were very happy to see that it had reopened. The service, the food and the prices were all great! We've eaten there twice since it reopened and can't wait to go back. I've never had a bad or mediocre meal there.

Yelp
Went to celebrate a birthday and had an overall great time with family and friends despite a couple of hiccups. The host and our server were very lovely, our server was super sweet and attentive and we were mentioned the Dine LA lunch menu and it was great overall! I would suggest to avoid the salad from the appetizer and the salad with the chicken plate(same salad) it's very bland but other than that every other dish (steak, chicken, salmon) and side dishes were delicious! The ambiance and drinks were also great, would recommend the sangria as it's not super sweet. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was due to some odd comments/remarks from one of the food runners/busser towards the end. He dropped off the desserts and was a little hostile with his comments when asked if the flan was coming. As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for over 10 years it was odd for him to say he "wasn't done and to let him finish brining out the rest" I understand my grandma could have waited longer but she was just mentioning a flan was also ordered as he kept placing the wrong dessert in front of the same person. We still tipped 22% as the overall service was great but we ended up closing out and finishing off the night for drinks elsewhere. It was mainly a bit awkward towards the end but I will consider coming back and maybe sit at the bar next time and see how it goes. Regardless, I say you give it a try especially if you've never tried this type of food :)
google avatar

Hussain S.

Yelp
The go to location when it gone to getting food. I would definitely suggest coming here to buy the half chicken, rice , & French fries. And the drinks are the best. Fresh wine everyday is good for the soul.

Tekah M.

Yelp
we tried lala's for dinela and while the food was ok, the service was not. our server took our order but we barely saw her after that. one friend ordered the lomo sandwich and fries but it was pretty bland. we asked for salt three times from three different servers before we received some. we had to ask for our last course twice before it arrived. they were accommodating though when i asked to exchange my drink. i ordered a lemonade thinking it would be fresh squeezed but it was minute maid so i exchanged it for a coffee instead. the food itself was decent. the dinela deal was $25 for an appetizer, main, and dessert. i got the spinach and cheese empanada, steak with mushroom sauce and mashed potatoes, and flan. i was satisfied with the meal. i loved the fresh chimmichuri they served with bread too. probably wouldn't go back unless there's another deal or the service has improved...

Kaitlyn S.

Yelp
Highly recommend! We haven't visited here in a few years but loved it even back then. Our office decided to have a last minute work dinner and although it was busy the staff accommodated our larger party fairly quickly and the food did not disappoint. I appreciate that they still have a high standard for both menu and service.

Yelp
Food was delicious and authentic. Place was cozy and nice and had good service. I will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
The food was awesome except the CROQUETAS but that's just me. The service was good always refilled drinks right away and the music was good music but light as well. So if you're close to this place I recommend going here.

Scott T.

Yelp
If you are searching for authentic Argentine cuisine and great atmosphere go here! During a recent trip to Argentina we fell in love with the food. Since then we have been searching for something in the states to fulfill our hunger. We instantly found it at Lala's. The empanadas and desert are amazing!!! On top of all that the owner and his son are so nice and welcoming. We live an hour away and will make this trip regularly just to eat there.

Yelp
Some of the best food I have ever had in my life. By far one of the best Argentinian restaurants I have ever been too. So many great people who work there and the food was so delicious I ordered two entrees. The owner and his son were working on shift and helped us out right away when we had a problem but we did not have any. Cheers Melrose Lalas, best of the best around. Hands down.
