15 Best Natural Wine Bars in NYC | Eater NY

"LaLou remains a stellar spot for sampling of-the-moment wines by the bottle and glass. The list from owner Joe Campanale —who also owns Park Slope’s Fausto and just wrote a book on Italian wine — and partner Dave Foss leans European, with representation from Spain, Italy, France, and a few options from the United States." - Eater Staff

We have had great food and a great experience every time we go. The kids look forward to La Lou. We had the blackberry biscuits, seasonal pumpkin pancakes, Belgian waffle with chocolate chips, Lakeshore Dr scramble with La Lou grits, and the Folsom omelet with La Lou grits. La Lou grits come with bacon, green onions, and cheese. All of the servers are welcoming and friendly.

Must say… we were disappointed. Started with chaos at the hostess stand. We were told there was a 20 minute wait but then told that outside was first come first serve. We decided to sit off the front porch waiting for our server, menus and drinks. When she came, we had to ask for menus and alcoholic drinks were on a separate menu. The presentation of the food was nice, but it ended up being ok, not great. We had the Blue crab Benedict & Chicken & Waffle. The Benedict was so so… English muffin was not toasted/warm, the eggs were overcooked and the grits were ice cold. The chicken & waffle was just ok … and lukewarm. It’s a quaint little cafe… we were hoping for a better experience.

Google
Lovely little spot for breakfast. The food and service were worth the 20-minute wait to sit inside to enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant. Especially great for out of town guests who want a meal they recognize but with Louisiana flair!

Google
Sunday breakfast. 20 minute wait. Every single item of food carried by looked and smelled absolutely wonderful! HUGE portions. An order of pancakes gives you three each the size of the plate so just get a snaller side order if you don't want that many. The appetizer of waffle bites is a meal for two. Eggs, grits and bacon all cooked to perfection. Great coffee. Staff were all friendly and attentive. Great old house character with local artist art works for sale. Despite the busy time we never felt rushed by the waitress. Parking lot across the street. Dog friendly outdoor seating.

My family and I loved everything about this place. The staff were all so kind and inviting. Our server was wonderful, im beating myself up that I forgot her name! The food was *chefs kiss*, highly recommend the boudin Benedict! The vibe gives “family and friends, cozy and inviting. Like you’re going to eats at your neighbors house. You feel the family owned presence. I love it. We will definitely be back!

Google
LaLukewarm Food was lukewarm 40min with a mid-packed house, waitress came and asked if food was, “hot and delicious?” —Whoops bad wording there Waitress disappeared and water glasses and coffee cups were bone dry while waitress didn’t check on us for 15min intervals at a time. White gravy was a lukewarm slop. Biscuit was tiny and cold. Grits were a overwatered-down slop. C’maw, the place is NAMED for the Deep South. Dude get the grits and biscuits right. You should be KNOWN for those two staples alone. For shame. Sausage patty was aight but lukewarm. Eggs were the same. Barely any heat to em at all. And it’s quite a pricey place to eat. But once again, overpriced food that leaves you wanting… what you actually had to pay for. Lower your prices with these performance levels. $25 a head for breakfast food. Youch. We waited 40min. The food should’ve been scorching hot. Most likely? The food was left on the line under lukewarm heating lamps for 18min while the waitress smoked cigarettes. I’ve seen it too many times.

Google
This was our to go spot before band practice. We loved this joint!! Nestled in the neighborhood up the block from the Mandeville Lakefront. Get full on great food then go cruise the lakefront!! That Mandeville Omelet is awesome!! (I add shrimp and crawfish to it to sort of make a mix between Their Lake and Mandeville offerings) Plus we're never too old to draw on the table paper!! Never lose your youth!! Great Joint!!

Yelp
We dinned here last month for the first time and it was one of the best places we ate at in the Mandeville area. We got there before the rush thank goodness, since I am not sure they take reservations or not, this place does get pretty packed. And now I know why. I have to give props to the hostess; she did an incredible job and she used old school tools like paper and pen to keep track of everyone. Anyway, after a brief 15-minute wait and watching incredible looking dishes walk past our noses, we were seated. I knew right away what I wanted. I ordered the smothered brie as an app. The hubs ordered the pancakes, and I ordered the grilled chicken strawberry salad. The smothered brie is literally Fall flavors on a plate. I felt like I was at Thanksgiving dinner and I loved it! Brie + honey + pecans + apples in a rich sauce to dip your bread into is my kind of dish! I felt like I needed a hot toddy to go with it. When entrees came out, I wasn't sure it could top that app, but it did. Those pancakes though! There was something about them, addictive! There was a crispiness on the edges, it wasn't burnt, but crispy and full of the sugary addictive flavor that I kept going back for more. I know you say a pancake is a pancake, but these were different and I haven't stopped talking about them. Then that salad, ok, it's hard to sell a salad but this one is really good. Fresh ingredients, delicious dressing, and huge. I could only eat half. I have not eaten that much on the North Shore, but this is for sure, one the best!

Yelp
What a cute little restaurant with a family vibe . They have things for little ones to be entertained. Nice menu with breakfast and delish food. We had the shrimp and grits. Had corn and fresh tomatoes The grits were creamy and the shrimp were perfect. The second meal was Crab Napolian. It was top of the line. They pair it with shrimp Alfredo. It was the best I have ever eaten. I would go back again. Dogs are welcome on the patio. I can see sitting outside in cooler weather. The service was good for a busy place. Thought it was smart to bring a pitcher of water to table.

Yelp
This is a great gem as it is the first Broken Egg in the Another Broken Egg chain. It has since been sold and turned into a to LA Lou. It still has the ambience, great food and service that we expect. I had the redfish Benedict and it was delicious. My husband had the redfish grille. He said it was really good. Our server Jenny was friendly and personable. We had morning cocktails and they were just as delicious! Highly recommend!!

Yelp
My daughter brought me here for my birthday. I simply fell In love with this place. Very accommodating. Staff wonderful. I will and have done again several times. Thank you

Yelp
Quaint little place, easy access, quality service. Had the Simple breakfast, 2 eggs, bacon, potatoes and biscuit. Great presentation breakfast was delicious. We will be back.

Yelp
We had just a short walk from our place and we were impressed. Great service and great food. We did not know that we were going to get so much food. The stuffed pancake was amazing and my omelette was very tasty also. We finished only half of each so they were still excellent for breakfast the next day. We also stopped in again before we left the area for home. This time we shared a meal and had plenty to eat.

Yelp
This place is so delicious! Perfect location if you want to walk around after on the lakefront! Breakfast is phenomenal! The vibe is amazing and every single time I've been here it's been such a good experience!

Yelp
The food at Lalou was delicious! I wanted to order Everything on the menu! When you walk in or wait outside, (because it's such a popular place)you will be greeted by the owner and treated like family by All! This place is So special, an absolute treasure!

Yelp
Visited LaLou in Mandeville this morning for a late breakfast with my wife and enjoyed it. LaLou is pleasantly situated in a vintage house a couple of blocks off the lakefront and exudes a certain Southern harm. Service was friendly and welcoming, although a little slow. I had the eggs, biscuit and gravy with special LaLou grits and my wife had pancakes. All were good. With a very good breakfast and lunch menu, LaLou is worth a visit.

Yelp
Amazing food! We had to come to breakfast twice because it was so wonderful. Cozy, intimate nooks or outdoors tables-every seat you feel like a winner. Great service both days for breakfast! Visit this charming spot in Historic Mandeville for a taste of Southern.

Rebecca G.

Yelp
The food and coffee at LaLou has been consistently good. Very good service. It's cozy but can get noisy if seated next to a large party especially if they are having adult beverages. lol

Yelp
Such a gem in the cutest area! I love the building as it makes you feel like you're in their home, the service was quick and very friendly, and the food was delicious! Their grits were amazing. Highly recommend if you're in the area! A plus -- they have wifi and outdoor seating too.

Yelp
I've eaten here several times. One of my favorite breakfast places when I'm in Mandeville. I do wish they could find a extra waitress or two. Every time I go in there, they seemed a bit overwhelmed. Perhaps it's just my timing. I've never had a bad meal here though, and will continue to die in here when in Mandeville. There's outdoor seating, weather permitting., that is great for people watching and enjoying their surroundings. There is indoor seating , of course, that really cute. Each room is decorated slightly different. Gives you the home cooking atmosphere..

Yelp
We were 4 that arrived at La Lou. This is a quaint home that was converted to serve breakfast/brunch. And wow, it was fantastic. They do not hold back on the appropriate veggies for the Bloody Mary. Our daughter in law ordered pancakes. It filled the dish where you couldn't even see the plate. Not being too hungry I ordered a cup of yogurt with fruit. It was mostly fruit mixed with yogurt. On the side they served a warm muffin consisting of chocolate and cappuccino - Wow. We strongly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Best breakfast in the area! Always friendly service, generous portions, fantastic southern ambience, perfect biscuits, coffee, bacon, omelettes, grits--all the good things! Owner pays personal attention to all her guests. La Lou's is a must stop every time we are in Mandeville.

Aubrey K.

Yelp
This is my favorite breakfast restaurant ever! Their sweet potato pancakes are SO good! Everything I've ever had here has been amazing! They are usually super busy but it makes sense considering how delicious it is!

Alison S.

Yelp
Thank you for taking such great care of all of us today....2- and 4- leg folks! Food and drinks were amazing...service top notch!!

Wes P.

Yelp
Had a burger. Ordered it medium with no cheese. Got neither. Tasted like a cooked frozen patty. I know because I have done it at home. Or maybe a reheated patty. I know it was 30 minutes before closing time this past Sunday. If they were not ready for that they should have told me. Somebody who worked there came over and asked about the food. They knew something was wrong. 504 908 8382

Yelp
Sweet greeting at the door, immediate seatings, clearly parking was hard to get but they achieved it! Those are the first things. The chocolate milk was delicious and pretty in a tall glass topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. The entire meal was perfect and prompt but my favorite part was the yogurt parfait they call the "Yogi". Bananas, strawberries, blueberries, granola and yogurt layers in a parfait glass. A gourmet muffin comes with the yogi but I opt for wheat toast to save on calories, lol. Perfect meal at a reasonable price.

Yelp
Great spot for Breakfast and/or Lunch in Old Mandeville. Excellent food and service, great owners and staff and La Lou has been a favorite for decades when visiting the area. Whether you're looking for an Omelet, Benedict, Pancakes or a sandwhich/burger, you'll find some of the best options and freshest ingredients around. Give them a visit, you won't be sorry you did.

Yelp
My friend and I had the opportunity to catch up at this fantastic place during her visit to the area. I absolutely loved my blue crab Benedict and bacon. Our waitress Jenny was so sweet. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
Nice place, cute little cafe, outside dining. Mandeville lakefront area. Service and food are good.

Yelp
Let me say first that I love this place. The location and ambiance are great. Service is also wonderful. I was very disappointed in this dish. It is stuffed french toast. Basically they bring you half a loaf of a sweet bread baked with a little bit of filling that oozes out. The strawberries are over ripe and the blueberries are not fresh. It swims in the liquid they cook the fruit in. I can't even eat it because it is soggy and mushy. Not worth $17 for a soggy loaf of bread. I have had other dishes here that have been much better.
google avatar

Robin B.

Yelp
La Lou was a wonderful breakfast experience. From the service to the food and to the ambiance, all was great. I would definitely recommend!

Julianna P.

Yelp
Service was fast and server was great but food was bland. Also, the hostess clearly knew the table next to us and she kept coming up to them and talking about politics. Please just let us enjoy our breakfast in peace. If another customer is talking about politics I dont care but you are an EMPLOYEE. We won't be returning.

Yelp
A great little place for breakfast or brunch. The food was outstanding and the service was a little chaotic. This place is located in the middle of a small town amongst old/new wood-frame houses and businesses. The servers were friendly and doing their best with the staff they had on hand but there was little communication between them. One person took the drink order and another brought the order out but forgot to bring my grandson his chocolate milk. Then people came in after us and got their food before us, then we had to wait on the check and so forth. The food was great and I can see what the owner was trying to do by bringing a little class to breakfast but they need to work on better organization with the staff. Lastly, for checking in on yelp, I was offered 10% off my meal but the owner said they don't have no partnership with yelp and didn't honor the discount.
google avatar

Richard C.

Yelp
I just walked out after sitting for 40 minutes waiting on my order. All I ordered was a salad. There were three other tables outside and maybe four or five inside. Not busy on a holiday week and after 40 minutes, and the sewer smell coming from next to the facility, I decided it was time to get out. It's a shame, because I think their food is pretty good, but clearly they've got service and kitchen issues that need to be improved.if you come, pack your patience and lower your expectations

Yelp
We came here for our anniversary breakfast date. The server Liz was awesome. The table we sat at was perfect by the window. It was quiet. The food was Outstanding. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, etc..... all cooked perfectly. We ate everything. Coffee mugs were neat. Service was just fine. We really enjoyed LaLou and will be back for more awesome food. Also of note, dining room was clean, and we were greeted immediately and sat instantly, and attended to perfectly. What a great find! We took a chance and it worked!

Yelp
First time going here on Mother's Day. It was packed(over an hr wait) but we snagged a table outside. They had a bar set up outside to get a drink while you wait. It's the most precious place near the lakefront. The owner Leeam is so nice and very hospitable. All the food was absolutely delicious. I got the crab cake napoleon, my husband got the crab cake Benedict & my MIL got the redfish benny. We will be back very soon!
google avatar

Angie D.

Yelp
Stayed at the Guesthouse across the street and walked over for breakfast. The menu is almost too big, it was hard to decide on what to get. I was very happy with my ham and cheese omelette although the potatoes were pretty basic. Hubby got one of the scrambles and I was a bit envious of his choice. It took a little while for the food to arrive although the service was friendly.
google avatar

Kyle P.

Yelp
Great brunch/lunch spot with many options tucked away in little town. Tons of options to fit everyone needs in an old historic house, close to the water. Unique country feeling home, and great service. Restaurant reminds me of a an old railroad home you would find in the south, great food, great attentive staff, clean restrooms and great charm, I highly recommend if passing through the area.
google avatar

Kitty A.

Yelp
A friend introduced me to this spot for my birthday. She raced about it so my expectations were high and I wasn't disappointed. All of the choices are inviting and the decision was hard, but I narrowed it down and got something different from what I would normally order. The food is fresh and delicious. The restaurant was clean and family friendly, it even has toys and books for the kids. The server was very friendly and patient. This is a must visit location

Lori T.

Yelp
The food was Amazing. We had the brie to start off and I got the lemon ricotta pancakes. They were so good. Our server was very helpful and super nice. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Adrienne G.

Yelp
My first time and will definitely not be my last. Delightful happy atmosphere, wonderful smiling service (even though we stayed quite a while). My salad with the grilled shrimp was out of this world and i want to go get it again right away. Beautiful outside space for lovely days and great parking right in town. Thank you to all of the staff - it was a special reunion between friends and it will be our "place" from now on. BTW the prices were great as well.
google avatar

Alexcia P.

Yelp
Awful from the jump. Warning! The hostess "Ms Lehman" (if I remember correctly, apparently she is the owner as well) is likely the worst person in Covington. From being blatantly rude from the get go when trying to seat from eaves dropping on our conversations and making comments to us. Food was okay, took an hour to make and our to go order actually arrived to our table 15 minutes prior to receiving our dine in food. Make that make sense! Our waitress was great at the very least- which is why it's getting such a high rating :) Won't ever be back!
google avatar

Haley P.

Yelp
This place was very busy, but the call ahead is worth it! We called about an hour in advance and was a about 10 mins late and they still were able to seat us when we got there. They have a huge selection. I ordered the Solomon omelette and the pitcher of mimosas (they don't have bottomless). My friend ordered the biscuits and gravy. We had a great brunch and then when we were not done with mimosas they let us move outside so they could have their table. Really had an awesome time and look forward to our next visit!
google avatar

Tabitha T.

Yelp
Cutest little restaurant in old Mandeville area. Great service and food. Recommend calling ahead (up to one hour ahead) to get on the wait list. We didn't know to do this and had to wait behind people who came after us.

Steven B.

Yelp
Have been going here for years and was pretty disappointed last 2 times. Was served stale potatoes and asked for eggs over medium ( which everywhere else we eat breakfast means yolk runny but not the whites). Instead of just making them like we wanted we got an excuse that we should have ordered the eggs medium well. We got fresh potatoes that were exactly what we expected the first time but when the server asked us if she could take some plates off the table ( after we had already tipped $20 on an $87 bill)** we are good tippers.... she made a comment " are you done with your "fresh" potatoes? needless to say there are other breakfast places we can go and will.

Amber A.

Yelp
We've been here twice and I'm still struggling to settle on a rating. 3.5 stars would be ideal, but I just can't push them up to 4 yet. So the thing about La Lou is that both times we've eaten there we were very happy and satisfied overall, but once we started discussing the individual dishes it became clear that each item was slightly meh. The first time we felt the price wasn't quite justified but couldn't put our finger on why. So the second visit was pretty much the same. Everything is very nice (love the mugs!) and they have awesome ingredients you don't see everywhere. Overall we were happy and full as you want after breakfast. But then when discussing the individual items, turns out we weren't as blown away as we thought. It's not prohibitively expensive but it's a pricier breakfast and we just can't decide if it's truly worth it. I imagine we'll be back at some point because I would like to try additional dishes though so maybe that will be a different story.
google avatar

Youngone K.

Yelp
LaLou has great outdoor seating options to eat out with a little bit more peace of mind during this time. We went on a weekday morning and while it took a while for a server to greet us and get our drink order, she checked up on us often after the fact. The chicken and waffles was under the specialties and it was very disappointing. Contrary to what the menu suggested, it was much sweeter than savory and the chicken was pathetic. It was incredibly dry and not flavorful so it was a very poor choice. It also wasn't worth the value. My friend got the egg scramble which looked to be more promising. The atmosphere is nice and the service was good when we finally got it so I would maybe come back after some time to try something more traditionally breakfasty.
google avatar

Charity B.

Yelp
Wonderful food and experience! We had the bananas foster french toast, boudin benedict, and grits and grillades. Delicious!!! Pro tip: make a reservation. We only had to wait 10 minutes. Great place to go on a beautiful day!

Deborah D.

Yelp
Totally in love with this place. So charming. Key West vibes. Large menu and everything I have gotten doesn't disappoint. Impeccable service.

Yelp
From the moment you enter LaLou, you feel a Southern elegance that has been lost in these modern times. From a uniformed server opening the door for you, to the charming waitresses, it's all very genteel. The historic building that hosts LaLou was lovingly restored by Broken Egg founder, Ron Green, and you can see his attention to detail in every corner. It has for the past decade, been a business location of Mark Dixon and his lovely wife, Liam Constantino Dixon. This business duo revamped the menu to feature true Southern specialties and locally-caught seafood for an unparalleled menu to tempt any palate. Fun fact: pay particular attention to the Chicken motif in the restaurant. One rooster in particular is particularly well endowed. Ask Liam the story! :D Ordering the Spinach Benedict with no carbs (Keto), the server gave me an option of grilled tomatoes which was a great addition. The eggs were poached to perfection, the Hollandaise sauce flavorful and rich, resting on a bed of artichoke heart and spinach. *sigh* I left charmed all over again by this Mandeville gem located just off the scenic Lakefront.
google avatar

Hailey W.

Yelp
The coffee. Soooo yummy, cheap and refillable! If you eat outside they usually leave it out on a side table so you can refill it yourself! Really nice menu. About 10 different Eggs Benedict and another dozen omelette options. They're open at 7 am, so it's really nice if you're out and about early. If it's not too hot it's great to sit outside. They have picnic tables in the grass and a larger table on the patio. I got the Lake omelette. I think it could use some more seasoning, but it was pretty good. The shrimp was grilled and yummy. It's kind of a weird combo to have seafood and ham, but it wasn't bad. I like how they immediately offered substitutions for your sides. The omelette normally comes with an English muffin and potatoes, but I got grilled tomatoes and toast. I'm excited to go back and try more things on the menu. I'm always looking for new breakfas

Yelp
WOW best breakfast or brunch place ever. And cutest little house converted to restaurant. Hoity-toity in the best way! Must try this place you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
This is a great place for a leisurely breakfast in Old Mandeville, La. The Classic Eggs Benedict is absolutely outstanding Everything is served in a ceramic skillet for an added gourmet touch. Their Breakfast menu is quite extensive and the service is excellent! I'll be going back to try some of their other unique items while I'm visiting the area! Highly recommend La Lou for breakfast or lunch.
google avatar

Stephany M.

Yelp
Yum. Yum twice! We've eaten there twice this week, and look forward to doing it again! Their whole grain bread really IS whole grain. Their grits are good, their eggs are tender and perfect. Their potatoes are perfect. Their omelets are packed with goodness. The ramp in wide and smooth, and the waitstaff is kind and friendly.
google avatar

Leeann M.

Yelp
The best Benedicts we've ever had. Got the classic and the tamale and both were absolute perfection. Service was meh, and the house was cold and drafty, but that was expected for a 40 degree day. I will be back for brunch the next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot for a delicious breakfast or brunch! At times there is a little wait due to limited seating but it's worth the wait. We've eaten here quite a bit with that being said, the food is always delicious but at times they seem to be short staffed (not always). However it doesn't really bother me bc when I visit I'm not in a rush to get out because I love the atmosphere! If you're looking for a great breakfast or brunch spot check it out!!
