The Best Diners in Los Angeles

"When you first step inside Lancers, you might think you accidentally popped into a Denny’s. This Burbank time capsule has the same generic entryway set-up, complete with a glass pie case, a Lotto machine, and a claw-machine game next to the host stand. Things get more interesting, however, once you notice the number of people chatting in vinyl booths with dirty martinis in hand. Equipped with a full bar, this old-school diner offers the novelty of pairing a Bloody Mary with your tuna melt or washing down a banana split with an Irish Coffee. Drinks aside, Lancer’s is a quiet, charming spot usually filled with retired couples eating omelets for lunch (and a great place for people-watching, too)." - brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder

A magical place. When I think of a proper American breakfast or an authentic meal, this is the spot. Warm and welcoming atmosphere. Every time we have friends or family visiting from Europe, we bring them here for a true local experience. The food is fantastic — hot and made with love. The staff is always friendly and kind. The bar is really nice too, and it’s a great place for families. Plenty of parking, and we love sitting at the counter watching the cooks work while they greet us with a smile.

Found on Google Maps, went to try them out.. wasn’t very impressed at all with the food. Service was fast and friendly, atmosphere was cute, but the food was very bland and the steak wasn’t nothing but fat and gristle! Terrible and disappointing.. the steak fries were good and the cream of chicken noodle soup was ok.. but the entrees were not a hit!! I picked out some unseasoned turkey to pack up in a to go container for my pup…

I’m lucky I get to travel for business and I get to eat at some very fancy restaurants and some local dives, I enjoy both. If you like going to a family diner, this is an excellent spot. The breakfast was great. Service was good and if I lived in LA, I would definitely be a regular.

Google
Live in the area and had never actually been here so decided to go for brunch. We were seated very quickly and the food arrived FAST. I had a breakfast burrito, which was pretty good, but wasn’t blown away. The ambience inside was nice and the staff was friendly. All in the burrito was like $25, which was a bit steep, but I’d come back and try another meal.

We stumbled upon this little gem a couple years ago, now we make sure we go here at least once every time we’re in town. Great atmosphere, staff is friendly, food is amazing! Hounds down, one of my favorite breakfast places in Burbank to go to. I miss places like this. I look forward to coming back again. Keep up the good work.

Google
From out of town. Passed this on the way to Walmart. Loved the vintage look inside and out. The seats are fully reupholstered but maintain the vintage feel. Food and service were great and prices reasonable. Highly recommend, we love California for the way they try to maintain vintage places.

Google
We were suggested by our house host to try this place out, a classic American dining place. The decoration was just like the movies (btw I’m from Malaysia), a long breakfast table & those fluffy American dining sofa / so comfy! Majority of the dinners comes are elderly, I’m guessing this would be the all time best as the servers do know most of them by names.. there are families and friends gathering there too.. i was there early about 6pm on a Friday and there was no wait to get a table. I ordered the Prime ribs, medium rare (cooked perfectly as I like it) and it comes with 3 side to choose.. i took the fries (crispy on the outside and soft inside), a chicken tortilla soup(served with avocado too!) and a salad (the blue cheese dress is so good). Food was served quite fast.. OMG the food just hit the taste buds of mine! Everything tasted so good and no regrets! Nothing to be said but you JUST HAVE TO TRY IT YOURSELF!! Service was great and welcoming.. Highly recommended for anyone passing by the area.. and if i have time, I would try to drop by again for sure!

Google
From the start the service was annoying. We were reading the menu and every other minute ge was asking if we were ready. Guests are ready when they put the menu down. We felt rushed The gravy on my chicken tasted like chicken bouillon and so did the supposedly "house-made" cream of chicken...nothing natural. The cream of chicken was disgusting and way too thick. We returned it!. You could stand the spoon in the soup...a thick custard consistency. The coffee had a burnt flavor. Menu prices were a bit out of control. One scrambled egg a la carte is $5.99, for just one egg. Compared to other places in the area, we could have made a better restaurant selection. Perhaps that is why it was empty. We were surprised as we had eaten a few times here prior.

Yelp
Gigi was wonderful. Thank you for the excellent meal and incredible service. One of the best dirty martinis in the valley too.

Yelp
Lancers is a staple of the Burbank area, one of the most classic neighborhood diners you could ever visit. Solid reliable menu, lots of excellent options. I went for the croissant club, my wife went for the pastrami, both super good (though I think the pastrami was the winner). Also nabbed a Dark & Stormy from the lounge, very solid! Also got a banana cream pie slice to go... and it was absolutely incredible, probably won't be able to go again without ordering one of those every time. Gigi, our server, was fantastic! The patrons love her and so did we! The whole staff was really great to be honest. I hear the fried chicken is super great, I'll have to come back for a try!

Yelp
If your looking for old school diner feels, then this is the place! The interior is definitely old and outdated but it has an old feel charm. They serve breakfast pretty much all day which is great if you love breakfast like me. The drinks menu needs to be updated. They don't have lattes or matcha, just your typical cup of joe. Service is usually fast and the staff is nice and friendly. The food is ok, solid. Nothing to rave about but not horrible either. They have daily specials which is nice. If you're in the neighborhood, definitely give it a try.

Yelp
Been here before, and although the ambiance is quaint and old-timey, and the food pretty decent, it's never really impressed me as worth a review, good or bad. Today changed that. The sign at front desk said "Please wait to be seated." No hostess in sight, but plenty of wait staff. So we waited. And waited. There were staff in easy view of us, no more than 15 feet away. No eye contact, no acknowledgement, no assurance someone would be there to seat us, nothing. The conversation they were having with a couple of other guests was far too important. So we seated ourselves. Nobody noticed. We waited and no one came. I went and grabbed menus for us myself. No one noticed. Finally a busboy came by (not our waitress) gave us coffee, said he'd tell the waitress we were waiting. THEN a few minutes later she finally came around to take our order, obviously miffed that we had seated ourselves. She took our order and then disappeared never to be seen again. The busboy did everything else. Brought our food (check the photo for the quality of dishware) checked on us, refilled our drinks, a good guy. And when it was time for us to go, despite us trying to make eye contact with any of three other waitress to ask for a check, it was the busboy who went and fetched our waitress from wherever she was. She smiled finally, once, when we were paying. She won't smile when she sees the tip.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of diners and the cozy comfort food they offer, and Lancers checks all the boxes. They serve a robust daily special that includes both soup AND salad--a great deal! On Tuesday, the special was Red Snapper, and the portion size was impressively large. The staff were super friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. One thing to note: they close at 9 PM on Tuesdays, so it's not a spot for the late-night crowd. Overall, a swell diner experience!

Yelp
Lancers restaurant of Burbank is a hidden gem in the city. The food portions are a great deal for the money. The atmosphere is nice with the bar being separate you get the Feelings of a local bar with music from the 50s up to the 70s. The manager is on-site being a host more so than a manager. The crowd is full of locals and the restaurant sells old school favorites. The drinks are on point. Noel was a fabulous waitress with big personality. Love her. The restaurant has a quiet side for peace loving diners. The enchilada plate was full of color and flavorful as for the Buffalo cauliflower it was well prepared, crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. And came with ranch and Bleu cheese dips. Both meals were filling. But the cauliflower were not too hot and not bland. With a great crust. I will be back to check out the Tuesday special of Prime ribs. Check out Lancers on Victory and be amazed.

Yelp
Delicious Jewish deli food. Very nice staff. Plenty of seating. We did have to wait in line outside, but totally worth it.

Yelp
Been coming to Lancer for the last like 15+ years. Always a solid cafe style with everything American. Service is good. Food is basic American fare. Nothing thats like crazy good. But good portions good flavors. Friday they have Prime Rib of Beef. Check the daily dinner specials and they have rotating daily soups.

Yelp
As a neurosurgical and aesthetic PA, I know firsthand what makes a great surgeon--deep knowledge, the dexterity to apply it, meticulous attention to detail, and exceptional bedside manner. I've known Dr. Massry for 20 years and have seen his work up close. So when it came time for my own upper blepharoplasty, there was no doubt in my mind who I would trust. He exceeds every expectation, and I couldn't be happier with my results. I wholeheartedly recommend him without hesitation.

Yelp
This is a solid, classic neighborhood diner. We've been here twice so far and are always happy we came. Lancer's has been in Burbank forever, and the dining room has an old school pie display tower, a classic Googie-ish coffee shop bar with an open kitchen, and big windows. We always go straight to the bar in the back, where it's dark, cozy, and they serve the full menu. You'll be in good company with lots of Burbank locals/regulars, watching sports or singing along to every song, some of who look like they've been hanging out there all day and don't know whether there is daylight outside. It's a fun time! The food portions are massive. They have all of the standard diner faves, and daily dinner specials for each day of the week. I ordered the fried chicken special and probably got a whole chicken on my plate, a baked potato, a chicken tortilla soup (highly recommended!), veggies and a side salad. It was so delicious! I also don't know where else you can order cocktails or beer for under $8 in 2024, but they have them here. The servers are friendly and make some mean drinks. I really like Lancer's and hope to visit for many more years.

Yelp
First time here. Went in for the Tuesday Prime Rib special. Great service from attentive staff. Food is good and good portion sizes. Standard diner food, nothing to rave about or influence on.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was great drinks were worthy of the fight up the 5. My pastrami sandwich I gave to my father in law he loved it. Said the rye bread was delicious I may have to go back and try it myself now.

Yelp
They finally changed the fish and chips from those oil dripping clunks of fish to much better fish and chips that are better quality. They look and taste good! The burger is also much better, only please add burger chip pickles and onions, which are supposed to be on an All-American Burger. I had to ask for onions and was told they don't have chip pickles but can bring me a pickle spear. Really? You try eating a burger with a spear on it.

Robert S.

Yelp
Had a long day just wanted to eat. Gigi was a great server, dinner was good. Service was excellent drinks were never empty. We will be back again.

Jocelyn R.

Yelp
Lancers exceeded our expectations. Our server Gigi was incredible and attentive; her kindness and exceptional service will bring us back. She went above and beyond to ensure we had a pleasant dining experience! Plus the food was delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
Good sized portions and always cooked perfectly. Props to this old school restaurant but the booths need adjustments to be a little bigger to keep up with the increased waist sizes of modern times.
google avatar

Lynn P.

Yelp
First of all service and servers are good, worth three stars but food worth zero. Stopped in for breakfast and was served absolutely awful food. May explain why the restaurant was mostly empty. The hash browns were limp and coated in grease, the scrambled eggs were on top of a lot of oil. My companion had a similar experience, an omelette than was also very greasy. I was a bit wary of the place as hadn't been in many years but understand new ownership and thought we would try it. Perhaps it was an off day, and I wish them the best, but we won't be coming back when there are better choices near by.

Deb S.

Yelp
We had rib eye steak cooked perfectly which came with fresh carrots, potato ( we chose baked) salad and soup. One of us chose cream of. Broccoli We sat for a while to order but it wasn't unreasonable. The dining area and the restrooms were both clean

Yelp
A solid neighborhood diner. Went on prime rib night. There is one older chef and he is holding it down on his own in the kitchen on a weeknight. So it took a little while to get our food. Prime rib was solid (3/5). The club sandwich with fries also got the job done and was a hefty portion (4/5). The chocolate cake was tasty (3/5). The service is friendly. Love to support this Burbank institution.

Yelp
A staple diner in burbank area. Been going here for some time and I quite enjoy the local vibe this diner has. I love their changing specials depending on the day. The servers were okay, they did their job, but could work on better customer service. Can't wait to try out their newly added bar behind the diner!

Yelp
Went to try and have a late night dinner with my daughter and her boyfriend. We checked what time they close and it says 11pm. Got there at 10:11pm and were told that they are closed. I questioned the gentleman man about them closing at 11 and he said my boss told me to close early. I guess that was a sign to not eat there. Don't think I will try to go to Lancers again. Was waiting to try the food for a while now but my time matters and if you say you are open until 11pm you should stay open

Yelp
DO NOT GO HERE!!!! I RARELY WRITE REVIEWS ONLY IF THE PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUS AND HORRIBLE AND THIS PLACE IS ABSOLUTELY A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! AVOID EATING HERE!!! NASTY RUDE GREETER UP FRONT!! WORST PLACE TO EAT IN BURBANK!!!! I thought this was going to be a great place because of its location. Looks very convenient because its in the Aldi parking lot with a bunch of other stores in Burbank which is an excellent town. Wow, I was so wrong. I saw the deal with the huge signs on the side of the building which say $18.99 prime rib special for Tuesdays along with their other specials for other days. I said that looks like a good price why not try it out. First time i went there already I could tell the customer service was complete garbage. Greeted in a very nasty rude way by the woman up front. i waited about 20.minutes for a server to come to the table. I had to flag someone down or they never would have come to our table. I gave this place the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe the woman up front had a bad day and the servers were overwhelmed, even though it didn't look like they were. I call them up on Monday which was the day before Christmas Eve to ask if they would have the Prime Rib Special the next day for $18.99 which was Tuesday and they assure me that they will have it from 8 am to 3 pm . I go back for Christmas eve which was on a Tuesday. Once again the woman up front greets us in a very rude and nasty way for literally no reason at all. She must really hate her life. We then eat the prime rib. Both were cold and not fully cooked. Then I look at the bill and its more than double the price at $30 each, not the $18.99 they told me it would be over the phone the day before. Now I don't mind paying $30 bucks, $50 bucks, or $150 bucks for a meal, but they told us the day before it would be $18.99 so we were told the wrong information. Then when we mentioned that they told us the wrong info the lady up front argued with us and said there was a sign outside. This was a lie because the sign only say Christmas day special prime rib with no price and the big sign on the side of the building still said $18.99 prime rib special Tuesdays. That woman is very very nasty and rude and should not be working there. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! on top of that the food was under cooked and cold. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. convenience is not worth being treated like an animal, neglected, argued with, lied to, and given under cooked food. I would rather eat at home or literally eat anywhere else. This is a perfect example of how to lose customers by hiring nasty rude people who know nothing about customer service. I value my time a lot. The reason I took time out of my day to write this is so others do not need to have a horrible experience.
google avatar

Keilab A.

Yelp
Your typical diner. Cozy and comforting food, but nothing spectacular. I came here with a larger group on a Sunday afternoon and it was packed. We got seated after 20 minutes or so, and it took a while for the servers to attend to us. Partly due to us being seated in the back area and how busy it was. I decided to get the half sandwich and soup combo. I opted for the cream of chicken soup which was good, but I was disappointed with the turkey salad sandwich. It was very bland and when the best part of the sandwich was the toasted sourdough bread, something isn't adding up. I probably would not care to make a trip back here, but it seems like people enjoy it.
google avatar

Renee D.

Yelp
Love this place is still around! I remember coming here as a teen. My friend and I shared the Pastrami sandwich which was so delicious. The sauce comes on the side for portion control... maybe you just want a little, or if you are like me, use it as a dipping sauce! The pickle on the side was crisp and the fruit cup is good! Lots of berries and pineapple, not too much cantaloupe. A cup of cream of chicken noodle soup was perfect for a rainy day! Love this place and tons of free parking!

Hana M.

Yelp
We've been coming here since the 1970s. You always get a good value for the price. The staff is always helpful and friendly and if any mistakes happen they bend over backwards to make it up. For example, yesterday the server that packed up my to-go order. Forgot my Asian dressing. Today came for lunch and I told Margarita what happened, she made me a little Asian salad to make up for it with the dressing. I'm very happy coming here and so is my mom. Their food is homemade and not over seasoned which is good for the seniors and people on restrictive diets like me. But anybody can enjoy their food and they'll accommodate most dietary requirements. We highly recommend it

Yelp
Easily in my top diners in LA list. One thing I love about the Los Angeles dining scene are all the classic diners and this is certainly one of them. They serve cocktails all day so you can get a drink for breakfast with your chicken fried steak if you'd like. It's really hard to beat the comfortability of a diner, and all the great classic menu options. I always frequent diners for breakfast, but it would certainly be good for lunch or dinner as well. They have a huge parking lot attached so finding parking will never be an issue. They also have a ton of seating options inside so I can't imagine ever having to wait long for a table. They have booth and counter options available and is much larger on the inside than it looks when first entering. Our server was very attentive and was super speedy with the drink refills which I loved. Pricing is also very fair so even though today was my first visit, it won't be my last. As always I started with a coffee and then tried a cup of their chili. It was very good although I wish they would use less beans. For my breakfast I chose the chicken fried steak and thought it was fantastic. This is not something I usually order but love it anytime that I do. It's more of a end-of-the-year treat for me and it honestly was great. The gravy on top really makes it. Overall a great diner in Burbank that any fan of the diner scene needs to check out at least once. I definitely plan to be back in the near future to try more items.

Yelp
I visited Lancers recently and found the interior to be clean and charming. We were seated promptly, but my $8 Bloody Mary lacked flavor even after adding salt and pepper. My boyfriend's coffee tasted odd, and his orange juice seemed more suited for a child. The turkey croissant sandwich, however, was generously filled and tasty. The fries needed salt and the pickle that came with my sandwich was strangely not zesty like usual pickles. Overall, it was an okay experience, but nothing particularly outstanding about the food.
google avatar

Yelp
Walk in the door to see a worker on her personal cellphone, she didn't seem like she really wanted to help us, after we received are food the waitress didn't come back until she gave us are bill and the salad was disgraceful
google avatar

Lorena W.

Yelp
Lancers a Burbank staple. While I'm not a regular the random times I have popped in for the Prime Rib special I have not been disappointed. The salad while it is a house salad it is crisp fresh and green. You will see no brown so many restaurants these days serve brown salad. The main course cooked perfectly with all the sides. If you are looking for an old true staple you won't go wrong.
google avatar

Americus A.

Yelp
Stopped by to Lancers Lounge section for Tuesday $17.99 Prime Rib dinner. Comes with soft buttered dinner roll, soup, salad. Ordered prime rib medium rare with baked potato and corn. Great portions for the price. Salad was watery at the bottom bowl, needed to be drained more thoroughly. Enjoyed the baked potato with sour cream and chopped green onions. Overall very good. Service was quick and friendly.
google avatar

Tiffani G.

Yelp
Good Old time restaurant! No real complaints the service is good and the food is always good and a good portion! If I can give one suggestion, the inside could use a refresh.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is delicious and the service was wonderful. Our waitress was very attentive and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It was busy even at 4:30 on a Sunday afternoon. They have set specials every day of the week. Definitely recommend

Yelp
We've driven by here so many times and decided to stop in this evening. It is definitely a must try. Decorated in Holiday ornaments, playing great music not too loud. We were greeted and sat promptly. Our server GiGi was great, although busy, she worked her section like a pro. Took our order and was very attentive as she zoomed by our booth. Greeted everyone the same with her name and what would you like to drink, or are you ready to order. Also the busser in her area, he was very helpful with the drinks and anything someone needed. The food was great: The T-Bone special comes with 3 eggs, hash brown, toast and jelly. My steak was cooked perfectly, eggs were good and hash brown My Sourdough toast was actually warm and the butter melted nicely. The Lancers Special 3 eggs, 4 strips of bacon, hash brown (needed just a few more minutes longer to cook) but it was still good nonetheless, toast, coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. Very fulfilling and tasted even better.
google avatar

Carson S.

Yelp
Possibly the best chicken and waffles I've had, and that's not even what they are known for. Service was slow, but the food and diner vibe more than made up for it!
google avatar

Ray A.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I went in for a late breakfast. First off, it took a while to even order. We saw people seated after us order and get their food before us. Secondly, the hash browns were burned so they were sent back and in return we received almost raw hash browns. Next, the omelette was flavorless and cold. Our server wasn't really that attentive but I can understand that to a point because he had other tables. I used to really like this place for both the atmosphere and the food but I'm not sure if I'll return again.

Yelp
Food : BLAND, DRY & COLD. I've been trying to give this place a chance. And, only 2 out of the 5 times I've been here. The food came out hot. And, tasted great. But, sadly the other 3 times were a disappointment. Not to be harsh. Because I'm sure other customers enjoy their food. I'm no professional food critic. Just a regular foodie. And, I solely base my reviews on how much I truly enjoy the meal. I will be brutally honest. And, I compare each spot to previous places I've been to in the same area. Again. This is ONLY my opinion. Please judge for yourself. ‍ SERVICE: is why I'm giving stars. Kind & Helpful Ambiance: is ok. It's what one would expect.
google avatar

Janelle L.

Yelp
I'm loving this place! This might sound a little odd, but I've been looking high and low for a family style diner with a bar since Conrad's in Pasadena closed. Lots of good nostalgic ambiance, decent food and of course, the adult drinks. We did our pre-shopping fueling with the Chicken Fried Steak and Extraordinary French Toast. The chicken fried steak was good, the meat was well chopped and not tough. The gravy was tasty. Shhh, I could have used a little more. The French toast was a little dry, I think it needed a longer soak in the egg wash. I like my French toast more custardy vs. toasty. None of this is gourmet but the food is solid and hearty. Parking isn't difficult but it is a busy mall. Definitely coming back for more whenever I'm in Burbank.

Yelp
Thursday night prime rib dinner is great! I have purchased this meal at a couple of specialized restaurants in this area. And let me tell you lancer's is a lot better and so much more comes with the meal. 50.00 bucks at specialty restaurants or enjoy this gem.
google avatar

Diana A.

Yelp
My husband and I had a double-date here for breakfast after a hike and we would definitely return. We LOVED our food and the vibe was chill like an old school diner. There's a ton of options to choose from on the menu and you get homemade food. There's plenty of parking in front in a large lot, but I can only assume they get busy on the weekends so be prepared for a bit of a wait.

Robert R.

Yelp
Something has changed, A couple weeks ago we where there on a Sunday,I ordered the LumberJack Breakfast wife had a the new york steak sandwich. Ordered medium rare, showed up way over done, sent it back the replacement showed up rare, had them take it off the bill. Today thought we we give them another chance. I again had the Lumber Jack, wife tried the speical Carne Asada breakfast. medium rare show up iover cooked and so salty you couldnot taste the Carne. Service has always been good, but maybe a new chef? cheap paper napkins and thin low end silverware. All cost cutting but it is had to find something on the Menu under $15.00 average in closer to 18. We are not going back.

Yelp
We love coming to lancers! The food is always consistently good and so is the service. I like that they still offer weekly dinner specials. The price is very reasonable and that's awesome in this economy. Their breakfast is also very good!

Yelp
Had a Red Snapper fish dinner. Large portion of fish and a delicious rice pilot. The mixed vegetables were good too.

Drove by Lancers today, and it looks as if it's abandoned. Paint peeling, wood rotting, appears to be one step short of being boarded up, and has become an eyesore. I used to be a regular there. I actually had to check Yelp to confirm that. It's still open for business.

Yelp
The front cashier named"Peaches" could really improve her personality! Her indifference is pretty bad!

Yelp
Regular old school coffee shop. Very fast, good coffee shop type food. Breakfast today. Pancakes are always good. Omelette ordered was very good. Service was awesome. Our server was very busy and very efficient. Place has been here for years. Always nice for an early breakfast, normally after a Walmart or Home Depot trip. Huge parking lot. Hobby lobby near by. Always worth the stop. Greta value.

Yelp
Haven't been there in a few years. Was looking forward to our old neighborhood diner and became quickly concerned as soon as I walked in. Instantly knew new owners were at play. New workers. New decor. Uh oh. What about the food? Awesome as it always was. Portions were a little smaller than I remembered but still delightful. Happy to say the new owners kept things the same as much as possible. Food service is a rough industry. New owners stepped in when Covid was shutting down businesses for good. I'm very happy this place is solid and in good hands.

Yelp
Food - 3 stars Service - 5 stars Diner vibes and over open before noon? HEY NOW. Maybe if I would have enjoyed a cocktail first that would have made my meal a little more palatable. The presentation and portions don't coincide with the flavor but given the opportunity I would try the classic cheeseburger. I was craving a chicken club. The chicken was good but that bacon was dry and rubbery . I left the last fourth of the sandwich I wish I would have asked for the bacon to be cooked fresh.

Yelp
Come for the breakfast favorites, stay for the Chinese chicken salad. Great portions in a traditional diner environment. You can skip the Cobb salad and gyro. Bonus points for the classic pie display case.

Yelp
Great local family diner, I love the soups and breakfast here. My favorite is the Chicken Tortilla soup served on Wednesday's and Friday's.
