Highlights

Landeyjahöfn, also previously referred to as Bakkafjöruhöfn, is a roll-on/roll-off ferry terminal and harbour serving the Herjólfur ferry to Vestmannaeyjar island. It was constructed specifically for the purpose of reducing the sailing distance from Vestmannaeyjar to the mainland.

We drove to this harbor and took the ferry to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), you put your car on the ferry and take it over. Buy tix in advance and you need to be at the harbor 30 minutes before departure and the crossing itself takes 40 minutes. Really beautiful ferry ride as well (with snacks and food on board).

Smooth experience. Snacks, drinks, and even some fastfood options on the board. You could get yourself beds and even cabin for some additional money. Better be in 30 minutes before the time of ferry. The whole trip to island takes 45 minutes.

Amazing ferry service to Westman Island.(Vestmanneryjar) Electric (very impressive)..so quiet. The island is not to be missed, from golf to puffins to great dining. We had an amazing lunch at NAES.

Great place to park and catch the ferry to Vestmannaeyjar. Has good facilities and loads of parking. What made it special for us is on the return trip we noticed a whale just outside the harbour. We ended up spending 30 minutes sitting on the rock wall watching 2 Humpback Whales feeding in the sound.

Great experience! The vessel was clean, up to date and all people involved were very friendly. The ride only lasted 30+ minutes and wish it was a longer cruise.

We took our camper van out to the island in September and it was so worth it. Make sure to check the ferry schedule on the website before arriving. They will need your id, and your type of vehicle will dictate what kind of ticket they give you. You can also purchase return tickets at this time which is what we did. You will need to select a return time to purchase these. There’s also a free parking lot if you just want to walk on. There are WCs in the ticket office as well as a small waiting room and some vending machines. Cars need to be ready to begin lining up in designated lanes 30 min before departure and they cut off entrance about 10 min before so I don’t recommend cutting it close. Someone will come around and scan your tickets (one for each person and one for a vehicle) and then they will guide you to drive on and where to park. Once parked you can go upstairs to the ferry decks. There are bathrooms and a little cafe. You can even enjoy a beer on board. There are upper decks and lower decks. The upper decks allow you to walk all the way around the ferry to take in all the views. We had a nice smooth ride that took about 20 min. The views alone are worth the ticket price. If you’re driving be sure to get to your car in time to drive off so you’re not holding anything up. If you’re considering doing this —do it. It’s lovely.
