Lao Jiu Men Review - Chinatown - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Lao Jiu Men has a fairly short ingredient menu, charges for dipping sauce, and has a two-broth maximum. But this place is great because (unlike some other spots where we're usually greeted with a two-hour wait) we’re seated here immediately. Their dining room is sleek and decorated with carved wooden dividers, paper lanterns, and scroll artwork. The broths are flavorful, with classics like spicy Szechwan and less common options like fish maw with shredded chicken. And while they don’t have premium cuts like wagyu or kobe, the meat, seafood, and vegetables are still good quality. Plus, they also have an AYCE option—just make sure to be conscious of the 15% leftover charge." - John Ringor

"Stylish and decorated with modern Chinese accents, Laojiumen is a hot pot newcomer that’s worthy of attention. In addition to the standard meats, seafood, and veggies, the menu also boasts a variety of tofu, meat/seafood balls, and noodles. And there’s all-you-can-eat for $24.88 per person." - Jeffy Mai

Me and my parents went here for the lunch service, which was good. Right away; their selection of items that you don't have to order is pretty large with many vegetables, meat, tofu, noodles, fish/meat balls and seafood (props to their dumplings and their homemade meatballs). Of course they had some cooked items which I only tried the fired rice which was bland/flavorless and one spring roll which was decent but the main prize is the AYCE selection. They did provide drinks you can buy for extra but mainly stuck with the free soft drinks which was limited in its selection but not bad. The desserts were very sparse being four selections and were fine, nothing to write home about. The star was the two soups we had gotten, which with the lunch special came to be free being the Tom Yum and the pork bone broth. Of course we ordered some of the extra premium meat which was free as expected but with how much food there was, depending on your taste you may or may not need to order extra meats especially if you came alone to eat. In total; the cost with tips and tax came to be $113.87 which compared to other spots I have tried is cheap but well priced. Highly recommend this, especially if you are coming with a group of friends as you won't be disappointed. Plus, when you leave they give you a coupon to use for two hours of parking, so if you don't stay too long you can have your parking ticket for free like we did🤗

The first thing that attracts your attention when you enter the restaurant is the stylish interior design with Asian decorations. It has tables, booths and semi-private dining areas for all group sizes. They offer both AYCE and AYCD and à la carte hot pot. They offer a wide variety of fresh ingredients, flavorful broths, and dipping sauces that make every meal fun and satisfying. First, you can choose your broth and then order your choices of meat from the menu. The buffet has 2 sauce stations where you can build your own sauce and a seafood and vegetable buffet where you can find variety of fresh vegetables, noodles, seafood options and snacks. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The restaurant validates your parking ticket for 3 hours free of charge.

One of the better hotpots in a city that has many, and easily a standout when it comes to decor, layout and service. While I would have liked the quality of their beef to be a tad better, I was thoroughly impressed by how expansive their seafood and veggie selection were. The fried food offerings were a delight (shoutout to the chicken wings and sesame balls), while the dessert was meh. Pretty good value for money with what you get in terms of food and ambiance. And if you pay cash or debit, you get the broth for free.

I will preface this by saying that this restaurant used to be great. I came here around 3 PM for their $30 deal. I understand that it’s an odd time and perhaps the food is not the freshest, however, what I experience was completely subpar. The biggest offender was the beef which had a stale taste to it. Upon closer inspection of the beef, you could see that it was freezer burnt, and stored in a fashion, where it was uncovered, and likely absorbed some of the fridge odors. Not to mention, it was incredibly tough to chew. The “buffet” was not much better. I am not sure how often the food is replaced, but you can clearly see that the vegetables are crusting/dry (pictures attach). The server was actually quite nice. Unfortunately, the entire restaurant had a musty order to it. I am well aware of how hot pot places typically smell, but this is totally different. Overall, it’s a shame to see how this place has changed. I recall fondly what a great place it used to be in a city where there is such fears competition I will likely never return. Despite the wintet deal, I will remind everyone that there are nearby options f with better price points, better parking, fresher, food, and equally friendly service.

If I could give more than 5 stars I would. This place has won awards and there's a reason why. The ambiance and interior is so lovely. I love the whole layout. Felt like I was transported to the Orient. The architecture and fine details 🤩 Staff were attentive and helped to explain everything. They have a cute laminated map guiding you but it's fairly easy . There's so many options to choose from. We did the pork bone broth and a mushroom based broth. Both were flavorful. It was my friends first time having hotpot and he was so incredibly blown away by the whole experience. $35.99 for unlimited soup base, premium meats , appetizers, sauces, fruits drinks and desserts is AMAZING Do park in the garage attached to the restaurant. They will validate your ticket! I didn't realize this and I parked accross the street...it was $10 for 2 hours. 😑

Food was great, but don't come at opening time otherwise you may not see all food items until the time you're almost full. Service charge is automatically included in the bill. Too bad the posted sauce recipes are all in Chinese so you won't really notice it unless you can read/understand it. The place is quite spacious and good for large groups. Hope they'll have locations elsewhere in the south

Love the interior of this restaurant. Great prices. All you can eat! Don't expect the highest quality ingredients but excellent value.

Absolutely loved this hotpot spot! Tons of options to choose from, and the service was fantastic, staff were attentive and quick to help. The space is beautifully designed and perfect for group celebrations or special occasions. Also!!! Free ice cream and soft drinks included in the all-you-can-eat price, which is such a rare and welcome bonus!
