The Best Ice Cream, Gelato, and Soft Serve in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"Laozi — pronounced “lousy” — is Salvatore “Sam” Caruso’s labor of love, a homegrown shop serving French-style custard out of the back of Blue Dot Donuts in Mid-City. Another business born out of the pandemic, Caruso has a cult following in the city for flavors like oatmeal ice cream pie, toasted coconut, and vanilla bean chocolate chip — flavors Caruso calls comfort food flavors. Laozi uses “beaucoup egg yolks” for the custard, creating an unparalleled textural creaminess that melts evenly across the tongue." - Beth D’Addono

Sam Caruso Is Forging a New Path With Laozi Ice Cream in New Orleans | Eater New Orleans

"I was struck by the French-style custard base—made with “beaucoup” egg yolks rather than a Philadelphia-style mix—and by how liberal Sam Caruso is with butter and cream; the result is exceptional density and richness, flawless scoops that peel out of the containers, and a textural creaminess that melts evenly with no icy crystals. What began as home experimentation in 2018 grew during the 2020 shutdown into a cult-followed operation: after selling out of his house and being forced to move by a cease-and-desist, Caruso sold from the back of Blue Dot Donuts in Mid-City and now regularly opens his biweekly menu releases at 10 a.m. every other Thursday to lines around the block, selling hundreds of quarts (one release moved 180 quarts in just over an hour; he’s sold up to 450 quarts in a few hours). The flavors are spontaneous and inventive—everything from jasmine-infused cream (once too perfumey) to pizza-inspired riffs, a planned Stilton-and-balsamic jam swirl, and playful, pun-driven creations like “Burnt Reynolds” and “REO Cream Wagon”—and he hand-packs each pint with original label art he designs and prints himself. Caruso’s backstory of long-term addiction, homelessness, and recovery (he’s five-and-a-half years sober) is openly part of the Laozi narrative, and he hopes to turn Laozi Ice Cream into a New Orleans neighborhood institution." - Amelia Parenteau

All the reviews are true. The quality of this ice cream is so high that with self-restraint, a pint of this richness lasts in my freezer for a solid few weeks. I also love the collaborative, artistic space and story behind the development of Laozi. Very much looking forward to how it evolves with time. If you've been hesitant of waiting to try it, CONSIDER THIS YOUR SIGN! New flavors routinely. The Camper's Delight and Coconut Lavender are too delicious to compare to one another. As long as his devotion to art &quality persists, Sal will have a lifelong fan out of me.

Absolutely the best ice cream I have ever had in the US, if not the entire world. I have had the strawberry, butter pecan, pistachio, chocolate, and different vanillas. They are all sensational. Laozi used to be in the back of the old Blue Dot Donuts, but they moved down Canal into the old Church Alley Cafe site.

The best ice cream I’ve ever had, which says a lot from someone who didn’t care much about ice cream before having this! Now I compare every other ice cream to this and have yet to find anything better! The flavors are delicious and unique, the names and labels are always creative add fun. I look forward to the menu drops and rarely miss one. Worth every penny! The owner is also pretty cool! 😊

Omg. If you’re an ice cream lover, this is a must! I had the Shuffle Peanut butter and since it was 90F out, they lent us 2 spoons. Only available in pints but soooo worth the trip. Great folks working hard to produce the best ice cream!

Laozi Ice Cream is the best. It’s not just the best in New Orleans, it’s the best. Sam is the best, and he whips up the craziest flavors ever. I brought my daughter to the shop, and she tried just about every ice cream he’s ever made. Legend. He drops new flavors all the time, and every single flavor is incredible. If you haven’t eaten Laozi Ice Cream yet, you’re slippin’.

I’m almost tempted to not write a review so I can have this best kept secret to myself. Sam is a passionate artist, as authentic as they come. You have not truly tasted frozen custard until now.
