Lark - Review - Castro - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Lark flies pretty under the radar, so is an easy bet for last-minute group reservations. They consider themselves Cali-Mediterranean which seems off geographically but tastes right. The charcuterie board and truffle fries are good places to start, but the Lark burger (with a lamb and beef pattie) with burrata is the ultimate grand finale. Lark is also only a block from Market St. so it’s a great spot to eat before going out in the Castro." - Nic Strain

Where to Feast During SF Pride 2018

"A classy, reliably delicious, not-too-pricey dinner option in the heart of the Castro, Lark has a healthy, Turkish-inspired menu and a consistently interesting selection of wines by the glass from all over the world. It’s a small space with just a few seats at the bar, but you can grab a reservation online if you’re thinking ahead (definitely recommended if you’re planning to eat at prime time). The lemony pan-roasted chicken dish (called kotopoulo) is a favorite, as is the lamb burger, and the salads and prawn dishes are great too." - Jay C. Barmann

Lark continues to be one of the best restaurants in the Castro. I come here regularly. Most of the dishes on the menu are pretty good. The environment is nice enough. The service is a bit uneven, but good enough.

Fantastic Sunday brunch. Was able snag the small area outside for a party of four. Service was swift and food was excellent. A very filling meal for a reasonable price. Dishes were delicious. Maybe the burgers/sliders could use a tad more salt/seasoning but they are indeed juicy and never dry in my experience. Get any type of potatoes and they’ll be prepared to perfection. And the desert/treat dishes were a nice finish. Kunefe with some salted caramel gelato is a wonderful combo.

One of the best meals I've had. Top of the list is the lamb shank. I shared with a friend the first time I came and shared with two friends the next time. All of my friends have since been back to share with their friends. We started for two hours and were treated with the perfect service. So helpful with choosing the wine and side dishes to pair the meal. Hummus and fries were standouts.

The restaurant was nice, our seats were comfortable. It was a little dark, almost too dark to read the menu. We had the hummus and the garlic fries to start.decent side portions. The entrees were good as well. We all ordered the Sultani. Our host was polite and prompt. Our server, Michael, was the only real issue, he was confused and distracted. He repeated requests and was intrusive. As he was clearing the table he spilled the remaining truffle fries in my lap and pretended it didn’t happen; even after I mentioned to him. I may return to the restaurant. If I do, I will request a different server.

I had a dinner with my friend at this restaurant and it appeared to be very cosy place with soft lighting, modern interior and friendly service. Even though it’s pretty small we were able to get a table without having to wait. The menu has a lot of interesting items, but we both decided to try the moussaka. The presentation was on point and the portion was generous. The vegetarian moussaka was delicious, the layers of eggplant, zucchini, potatoes and cheese were all perfectly cooked. We were so full that we didn't have room for dessert, but the cocktails were excellent. My friend had the Gloam, which is a strawberry and brut based cocktail that wasn't too sweet, and I had the Whipple, which is a gin based cocktail with lemon bitters and cherry. Overall, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy spot to enjoy Mediterranean food in the Castro.

This is such a nice bar, really great vibe. The hummus is fantastic. I only come here because of Snow, she's the best bartender ever 🍸

This cute little hideout gives off speakeasy vibes with a chill atmosphere. The food is amazing with selections that even include Shakshuka. Came for brunch and the bottomless mimosas did not disappoint, James our server was beyond amazing and attentive and made sure our cups were filleth to the rim! The energy, the food, the service all top notch. a must when visiting SF and the Castro!

Google
The Lark is a beautiful restaurant with a great staff! The grilled chicken and meats are delicious as well as the beyti. Can’t go wrong with any apps and cocktails here! Head Chef Coskun is so kind too!

Yelp
Not only did I come away from this place full and happy - the wine pairing suggested with the moussaka was on-point! - but I also got to learn more about Fernet and a whiskey from the staff (major props to one guy in particular; his name escapes me but it started with a D and he was truly amazing, but so was everyone there). This was exactly the sort of spot I was looking for and I'm glad I got to visit. It's warm, cozy and inviting. I hope to visit again soon. In the meantime, I will be changing how I order Fernet moving forward

Yelp
Nice spot just off bright and bustling Castro St. Ambiance feels just a touch upscale to make this a great date spot with warm dim lighting and intimate seating. We came on a Friday ~9pm and the place was still full, so we sat at the last remaining seats at the bar. Food was delicious - on the pricier side though did not disappoint. Service was a little slow, seemed like they were running around with too few people. Good for a night that you may wanna splurge a lil!

Yelp
Small, dimly lit, intimate cocktail bar lounge in the Castro. Musakka was very tasty and pleasant. The mixed grill (miktos souvlakia) was perfect to sample all of the different meat skewers they offer. The arnaki brochettes (lamb) was the favorite. The others (chicken ground beef and lamb) were quite fine.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place, I have had probably everything on the menu and I promise the food is super delicious! One of my favorite spots in the Castro district. The staff are beyond amazing, super friendly and always there to help. This is a great spot to go for a date, or with friends and enjoy a great meal and a drink.

Yelp
Recently went to this cute, cozy restaurant in the Castro for dinner! We didn't have any reservations, but were able to get a table before the dinner rush came in. It was a super cute, cozy restaurant with a lot of warm colors and plants. Waitress was friendly, and didn't rush us out which is always a plus. It was the perfect place to eat dinner, drink some wine, and chat with friends! The portion sizes were very generous, it was enough to take leftovers home. I tried their chicken skewers, which was very delicious in terms of seasoning! It was a bit dry and hard to chew, but I didn't mind too much. Their hummus was so delicious! The pita bread was warm and soft, perfect appetizer to share. That was definitely the highlight of the night.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant in Castro, service and food were amazing! This was not the restaurant we intended to visit, however it served the purpose for the night

Yelp
Lark burger had a moist beef-lamb patty and a balance of umami in cheese and caramelized onions. It was a little hard to eat in a ciabatta bun, but I just used a fork to eat the rest of it. The fries came out in a slightly smaller portion than we had hoped for the price of $10; overall the food is a bit on the higher priced end. We also thought for some of the meat dishes like the keftedes that the angus beef-lamb was a tad dry and difficult to eat without mixing in a sauce from someone else's dish like a tomato sauce. Service also wasn't particularly attentive but food came out in a reasonable time.

Yelp
This place has the best cocktail I have ever had in my life - I'm not exaggerating. The bartender was obviously skilled and into his work, including the performance aspect of it, tossing the shakers around. The cocktail was called the Hwy 360 and had coconut rum, apricot, sesame, chinola passionfruit, lime. It was so perfectly balanced and sweet without being cloying. I will think about it forever. My spouse and I split the French toast and the salmon Benedict. Both were really good but the French toast really stood out - stuffed with mascarpone and both soft and crispy. , The ambiance was intimate, friendly, and low key - seating was close together but not too close, and the restaurant was dark and cozy without being closed in. Balanced, kinda like the cocktails.

Yelp
Lark had been on my list for quite a while and finally got to try it. It is a small place and located in Mission close to Valencia street , so this area has lots of interesting places to eat. Really nice decor and ambience and so this would be a nice date night place. We tried the vegetarian appetizer sampler 'Pikilia' which was a great way to try all the appetizers and every tasted nice. We then go the 'Rodakino Rocca' without the prosciutto . It was nice but wish the ratio of arugula to other ingredients was more balanced. I also go the 'Wa Penduka' drink which was nice as well

Yelp
Easy to get into this spot on a Sat evening, perfectly located by the Castro area if you are looking to go out afterwards. The decor was comfortable and chique, without being obnoxious. Perfect place for a nice dinner without all of pretentious vibes that often come with upscale spots. The portion size is very sizeable, you can easily share a main between two people, great value for money. One of the best spots for the amount of meat/protein for the price. The service was attentive and nice, although sometimes they were a bit busy and it was hard to get their attention. The place would get 5/5 if it was not for the drinks. I did not like either the cocktails me or my friend got. This was further confirmed by the table beside us who also sent 2 drinks back to be remade. Maybe not the best place for drinks, but food was exception. Would call the drinks 0/4 success rate.

Jenny K.

Yelp
One of my favorite local spots. Pros: excellent food, beautiful presentation, really friendly staff, super cozy inside. Cons: I find the meat to other ratio off - for example the $35 filet mignon is 2 slices of meat with 5 large slices of potato, 2 pieces of bread, and a few shishitos. I think for that price (which is reasonable), you should get more steak and some proper veg, but that's definitely just my preference. And to be fair, my elderly dad and I always share everything. The bathroom is borderline gross and doesn't fit the aesthetic at all. The staff is super friendly, but eats in front of customers and isn't super knowledgeable about the menu. Overall, I will be a consistent customer here because the food and the vibe speaks for itself and that is what I really care about when I go out.

Yelp
Walked in on a Friday without a reservation and grabbed the last open table. Great ambience, music, decor and superb service. Every piece of cutlery and plateware was beautiful, which added to the lovely presentation of each dish. If you want to try everything on the menu, go with this order: Appetizer sampler (so good, especially muhammara and the cheese roll) Lamb souvlaki (loved the flavor) Main course sampler (perfect mix of all the meats and a perfectly seasoned chickpea salad) End with the perfect baklava and creamy salted caramel gelato for dessert. You can skip the kunefe as well unless you already know you love it. Also can skip on the appetizer Meatballs (too tomato-y for me).

Yelp
Such a nice place! Food was delicious and the service was spectacular! Make a reservation instead if walking in because it gets really full. Interior design looked beautiful and elegant! For appetizers we got Truffle fries and were gooey and yummy! Then we got the Octopus tail. After that we got the the lamb shank. Lastly we got mixed grill. All was fresh, juicy, and mouthwatering!

Yelp
The best date night! We had an amazing waitress who made us feel so at home and made great recommendations. We got the burger and moussaka and a few cocktails. Best date night ever. We'll be back! Thank you to our amazing waitress (I think Amanda?) for taking care of us!

Yelp
Such a beautiful place with amazing food & service. I came here on a Saturday night with a group of 7. I didn't think we could get a table but they tried their hardest to get us sat asap. We just had to wait for a table to finish their dessert but the server was very kind by saving a 2 top so it could be added to a 4 top. I think we waited about 30-40 mins. The mousaka was my favorite item, then the tzatziki. I would definitely order the mousaka again. I'm usually not interested in vegetarian dishes but it's soo good and hearty. 1 order is really big, great for sharing. We also got the lamb shank, meatballs, sultani and boureki. I really liked everything, the boureki wasn't for me. I think the cheese was a little much for me. This place is worth trying out but make a reservation and order as much as you can!
google avatar

Yelp
Recently had dinner here with my best friend and WOW! Service was great, beautiful ambiance and very welcoming! We ordered the truffle french fries, boureki for appetizers. Then we got the kotopoulo brochettes and lamb shank for our entrees. Everything was delicious! Would definitely come back and recommend this place to other people!

Yelp
What a yummy place!!! This was my first time coming here, and let me tell you, it's such a cute place with great food, and they have food for everyone, meat lovers, vegetarians, pescatarians, maybe vegan (don't quote me on that), but a great place to try. a Very modern place to have a date night or hang out by the bar to have some cocktails or mocktails. The outdoors is cute, and the indoor decor has a dim ambiance. Below is everything I tried, and it was so delicious; if you ever find yourself in SF's Rainbow District, eat here. Here are just the highlights of my favorites *Hummus & Pita bread, great hummus, and the bread are fluffy and yummy! They are such a great pair 9/10 *Octapodaki, Instagram-able and delicious! The octopus was grilled to perfection, and the highlight for me was the chickpea and kale salad 1000/10 *Kalamarika Mykonos tasted amazing!! I love that they served this with bread! Soak up all the sauce and calamari 8/10 *Vegetarian Musakka, I had to make sure this had no meat, and let me tell you, it's delicious!!! The sauce, cheese and all that veggies are 9/10 *Baked Salmon, I would come back just for this. The salmon was perfectly cooked, and the giant butter beans were to die for 1000/10. Service 100/10, highly recommend! CHECK OUT MY INSTAGRAM & TikTok FOR MORE @melshealthybowl.

Yelp
I was in the city for 24 hours visiting a friend on my way to new york. We stopped for a quick dinner. I ordered the Playa Habana which was as good as it sounds, reminded me that I was just in Hawaii. Chicken skewers were great, and salad was delightful and well seasoned and dress. Nice intimate place, a little dark but just what we wanted, and felt well cared by the staff.

Came in just for a drink & wanted some pasta and didn't know this was Greek restaurant but the host was amazing best suggestions we got appetizers, entrees, & desserts did not disappointed it was all so so good ! It's a cute hole in the wall by Dolores Park ! Beautiful Drinks were so good too we had 3 of their best choices!

Yelp
Solid Greek/Mediterranean spot in the Castro area! The interior is small but decorated nicely, and there was no wait on a weekday night for dinner. The food was fresh and flavorful, and the service was great! Would recommend for anyone looking for a light and healthy meal in the area.

Yelp
In search of a late dinner following our kiddo's game. As we were viewing the menu, a couple of gentlemen were leaving and told us how good the food was so we decided to try it out. We observed most were there for the drinks while we were of the few there for the food. We decided on: 1) Pizza - topped full of arugula and there was lots of stringy cheese. Although it was a fine pizza, nothing extra special about it. 2) Prime ribeye skewer - One skewer served with a mix of garbanzo beans, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. The flavor of both was good but the meat was a bit chewy. 3) Lark burger - served with a basket of fries which was served hot and crispy, but on the salty side. Hubs and kiddo said the burger appears on the small side but, overall, was hearty and meaty. The patty was a mix of beef and lamb and they both noted it was flavorful. Lark appears to be more tailored to serve as a bar rather than a restaurant. Service was friendly. Although the food was ok, nothing in particular stood out. It's also a tad on the dark side in this establishment so it was difficult to make out all the components in our dishes.

Yelp
A fun, moody little small bites bar that served as the perfect jumping off point to our night out. We ordered a ton of apps/Mezze-- the usual suspects, and enjoyed some mezcal. The hummus was simple, but delicious, and a server named Ferris was really kind to us. Definitely a place to check out.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing, 5 stars all around. It's a small and quaint restaurant tucked away in the heart of the Castro but it makes the perfect intimate date night. We were seated right away and ordered 2 cocktails; the HWY 360 and a classic Old Fashion. The HWY 360 is perfect if you love fruity cocktails, this had a pretty nice passionfruit flavor and had just the right amount of alcohol to make it still delicious. The Old Fashion is one of the best I've tried, sweet but not too sweet where you can still taste hints of the bitters. We then asked Chef Coskun to order whatever he thought we'd like - we were certainly not disappointed. We were served a platter of pita with various different dips and each were so unique and flavorful in their own way. The dolma was also so light and refreshing, the citrus added a nice zest. We then moved on to the main entrees, which were the octopus/calamari pasta and the lamb/angus beef. Both blew my mind, the octopus/calamari pasta was so different from anything I've ever tried before but the creamy dill sauce was so addicting and paired so well with the octopus and squid ink pasta. This is a must-order item here! The angus beef/lamb was also so juicy and tender. I'd order this again as well! Lastly, we were served baklava with salted caramel ice cream and the salted caramel ice cream was so creamy and nutty, almost like a nutella gelato. 10/10! Overall, the atmosphere was very inviting and relaxing. I also appreciated the amazing service and hospitality. Perfect for an intimate date night.

Yelp
Tried Lark once before when it was more of a sit down place. Thought it was ok. But decided to give it another try. It's a good location and the restaurant is laid out nicely. Seems like it has potential. Was disappointed on our visit. My friend and I were pretty much the only ones in the restaurant. The wine list was not very extensive. The food menu was not extensive either. We ordered drinks and food. The food took an extraordinary amount of time to come out. Probably about 45 mins. And we were the only ones in the place. One of the items, the pizza, was not really that good. Bland tasting with too much cheese. The service was friendly but also missed the mark a few times during our visit. Overall, Lark has potential but I don't think I'll be back.

Incredible food, particularly nice when on a keto diet. The service was incredible and the ambience is comfortable and elegant, without feeling pretentious or cold. Perfect for a date.

Yelp
The Lark is a cocktail bar lounge and restaurant in the city and is located in the Castro -- definitely a hidden gem and MUST TRY ASAP! I have come here a handful of times and I am finally making a solid good review. CHEF & restaurant OWNER COSKUN features delicious high quality CULINARY GREEK-ANATOLIAN food This Restaurant satisfied all my senses: visually, aesthetically, and my taste buds were blown away with every cocktail, dish, and dessert. The Lark is the perfect place for date night, parties, large groups, or even a solo dolo dinner to treat yourself. Everything we tried WAS DELICIOUS 10/10: - Mussaka: This was vegetarian, but it was so delicious. As a meat eater I was shocked how flavorful this was and that there was no meat - Beyti - Ketedes - Arnaki Brochettes - Sultani - Octapodaki EVERYTHING FROM THE COCKTAILS TO THE DISHES were all so flavorful, hearty, delicious, on point 10/10 -- each dish and cocktial did not miss. COCKTAILS: - HWY 360 15 - Pimpinella - Wa Penduka - Whipple - Unruly Passenger - Ondas DESSERTS: - Baklava - Salted Caramel Celato - Kunafe You must get all 3 desserts -- they were all so delicious and tasty. I promise you will not regret getting all 3!! All the food was created and made with love and you can tell a lot of thought was put into each dish. Staff provided impeccable service and they were so fast with our order. I have no complaints and you have to pass by and see for yourself.

Yelp
This was the best meal I've had in YEARS!!!! We had the lovely service of Berfin and she was incredible! The horiatiki was one of the best salads I've ever had - we practically licked our plate clean and the chicken in the kotopoulo brochettes was so juicy and flavorful. We had to ask for extra pita twice just to get every last drop of our meal :)) 10/10 recommend and we will definitely be back!!!

Deborah V W.

Yelp
Food and service here is absolutely wonderful! I can't pronounce what I ordered, but it was filet mignon, peppers, potatoes, pita bread/hummus. Myself and two friends had planned to visit Blind Butcher next door, but they were all sold out for the evening and suggested Lark, which was next door, that was perfect and the rest is history!
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
Food is great and surprisingly reasonable on prices. Service was great. There were some other guests being kinda obnoxious, and our server spoke up about it, which I deeply respect. My only complaint is that the place is extremely loud. I couldn't hear my partner from across the table, so we had to be re-seated at the bar so we could sit side-by-side. Perhaps some sound damping would be a good idea.

Yelp
I ended up here for birthday dinner with my brother and this place did not disappoint. The ambiance was soothing and relaxing. The baywood cocktail is a delicious spin on the classic old fashion. The maple and cinnamon were masterfully blended to make an awesome drink - I ordered two. We got started with the calamari, then salmon for me and chicken skewers for my brother for our main. All absolutely delicious and the service was excellent. Check this place off your list!

Yelp
Lark has been under renovation a little bit ago it was first time for me to come back and I absolutely fell in love. I love how they can mix with traditional Mediterranean Greek food with modern touch. It's the best kebab meat I've ever tried for so long. I loved Sultani with eggplant and yogurt. Also they have a great bar.

Yelp
Hi. Had been a while since I had been to Lark and my partner raved about it. We went last night and really enjoyed it - the ambiance is cozy, our waiter (love the stache!) was personable, friendly, and efficient), food was great and reasonably priced. BUT...I have a pet peeve that presents itself at 95%+ restaurants. When you go to the trouble of scoring on all those fronts above why do you drop the pan (pun intended) on the washroom? It's not that it was dirty per se but just don't have the cleaning supplies clearly visible! And all the artwork in your dining room? Why not put some in this room too? We'll be back but sure would like to see my feedback executed. Tx.

Yelp

Yelp
The Castro is not short on places to boozy brunch but Lark has to be one of the better options for a slow and lazy weekend catch-up with friends. The atmosphere is chill and relaxed. There are other spots around to party if you choose. Things are enjoyably slower here. But feel free to imbibe in bottomless mimosa. $15 with a brunch order. I had the lamb souvlaki with poached eggs and it was really tasty. Nice meaty chunks of lamb that was well-seasoned and not gamey. Runny yokes from the poached eggs make it feel like a classic brunch but the hollandaise comes with a sumak twist. All in the flavors really came together well. Perfect for washing down with mimosas that the servers happily refilled. Service is warm and friendly which adds to the laid back vibe. I've totally be back for lunch again soon.

Yelp
This meal was absolutely incredible. From the cocktails, to the appetizers, to Berfin's Turkish coffees. I would give six stars if possible. Berfin was the best and kindest server. HIGHLY recommend!!!!

Yelp
One time I got really drunk here with the intention of getting food (but the kitchen was closed). That was a fun time so decided to try Lark again but actually get food. The order: the meatballs, truffle fries, angus sliders, a draft beer and a glass of Chardonnay. I'm now drinking a glass of wine at home and wishing I had more fries to munch on. And the meatballs had olives in them, which I'm kind of obsessed with (note to self- try this at home). A nice gentleman walking his dog decided to stop and chit chat with my friend and me, and it reminded me of how nice the people in the Castro are. I love this neighborhood.

Yelp
a great, cozy and secluded place in the midst of what we know Castro to be. Newly reopened with a great Mediterranean menu and a legit collection of spirits and cocktail menu. The place is warm and inviting with a an exceptional and kind team. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Lark is such a comforting cozy place, the food is delicious and drinks are amazing - so is the staff. Super friendly and knowledgeable, you will want to spend your whole evening here! 10/5!

Yelp
Found this place by accident and it was our 3rd restaurant that night because the other 2 were lame. Walked in here thinking it was a different place and the first thing I saw was an excellent wine list by the glass - Elevated list. I expect everyone fine dining restaurant to have at least decent wine by the glass offerings in California but it's not the case. I knew I could at least have a great glass of wine here. Corbin greeted us at the front and we took a seat at the bar. Cool bohemian vibe from him and the other customers here. I loved the atmosphere. We sat at the bar, Corbin, came over and discussed the wines with us, tasted us on a few, I liked all of them and then started with a glass of a well made Italian Sangiovese. Bob ordered some super juicy Angus beef sliders small place $10 (Aged Whiskey carmelized onions and house aioli spread) and I had the Beyti (main plate) $24 ( Minced & grilled angus beef & lamb, shallots, pepper in a wrapped lavash and tomato basil sauce served with Greek yogurt, grilled bell peppers, and tomatoes) WOW, and with it I enjoyed a Cote du Rhone (GSM) from Grande de Veneur and also tasted a Jeff Rundquist Petite Sirah/Petite Verdot blend. After going to 2 other restaurants with lousy menus or service - I was thrilled to come here. Love this place and will definitely go back next time I'm in San Francisco.

Yelp
As a fellow Sus scrofa domesticus i feel offended my the term 'Lark'. Please refrain from such offensive and Sus scrofa domesticus hating comments. You filthy swine.

Yelp
Absolutely love! Friendly and warm service. Started with Cheese Board and a couple of drinks. Had the Same Ole and Hot Daddy cocktails and I really enjoyed it. Along with the drinks, I ordered Lark Salad, which was fresh and tasty. I felt a balance of flavor with Apple cider vinegar dressing.   Overall, the food, service, and atmosphere were amazing. We spent a great time.

Yelp
Our friends wanted to grab a quick bite here since we were in the area, but being a ramen fanatic from Maui where we have almost no variety, I had other eating plans for myself and my spouse. I tagged along anyway, just to keep company and vulture-pick. ATMOSPHERE: It's your typical small, city-type of a space, complete with a small bar and regular table seating. Like other SF eateries, they have those really cool-looking filament bulbs with the different designs. DINNER MENU: Boards, apps, salads, tapas, burgers, seafood. BEVERAGE: Anchor Steam Amber - $6. Served in a mason jar (so 10 years ago), the medium-colored local brew was tasty and mild. FOOD: Charcuterie Board - $19. Our table of 5 shared this. Good but gees, so boring! The meats, cheeses and bread were all fresh. Horiatiki Salad - $10. My spouse's salad that was sound and healthy. Only a sole Greek olive could be found though. Angus Sliders - $12. My friend's dish. The patties looked so juicy and the report back was so. But, fries weren't included so hence the next reviewed item. Truffle French Fries - $9. I loathe truffle oil but fear not, they were tastefully seasoned, thicker cut and crispy. SERVICE: Our male server, sorry I didn't get his name but he's from Turkey, was great. Very professional and friendly. OVERALL: Average food, good service.
