14 Great Restaurants That Make Ballard a Seattle Dining Destination

"It doesn’t get much more classic Ballard than this Danish bakery. Larsen’s does everything from seeded bread to wedding cakes to Danish specialties like kringle (basically a big sweet pretzel). But if you’re coming here it’s probably for a little treat, like a bear claw, or a spandau (which is a bit like a Danish, only with jam or custard in the center). Don’t sleep on the humble doughnut, especially when the red velvet variety is hanging around." - Jade Yamazaki Stewart, Eater Staff, Harry Cheadle

Doughnuts You Should Know in the Seattle Area

"It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the pastry case at this Ballard bakery, and we won’t shame you if you end up trying one of the shop’s many traditional Scandinavian treats. But our advice is to head over to the doughnut section and check out their cake variations in particular. The red velvet doughnut in particular is an amazing example of the form, glazed on the outside and moist on the inside, with that red velvet kiss of tartness." - Mark Van Streefkerk, Harry Cheadle

I’ve lived in Ballard 20 years and always liked this place. I like their ham a cheese croissants and my kids like the maple bar. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is good. But I really think bakery should mean freshly baked, not recently defrosted. I brought my most recent loaf home and sliced into what felt like a carb-based ice sculpture. Very much frozen inside. It was baked and then frozen obviously but the question is how many days ago? Is it a day old bread or a many days old bread? Who knows but I paid full price. At 5:30 AM, I expected warm bread—not a Tuscan loaf ice cube. Disappointing from a place I’ve supported for so long. Feels disingenuous to sell frozen bread in a bakery you assume is fresh because it is displayed in a case with ovens behind them. Suggest you post a sign to say not fresh then I know what I am getting.

Larsen’s is amazing!! We must stop here as soon as we are able whenever we come to town. The bakery products are super sweet—but they do have savory scones as well. We got a black coffee and I had a grey fog drink. Excellent. You will not be disappointed. The staff was helpful and courteous! She even helped me find a local açaí bowl place for later in the day. Thanks. We will always be back!!

Google
We've been to Larsen's several times and have always enjoyed their pastries and coffee, which are consistently excellent. However, we were disappointed with a recent custom-ordered birthday cake. We chose a chocolate ganache cake with mocha frosting, but the ganache was overly firm, and the frosting had a heavy, buttery texture with barely any mocha flavor. Overall, the cake was not enjoyable, especially considering its higher price compared to similar bakeries in the area.

Google
I have spent a fair amount of time in Denmark over the years. It’s one of my happy places. I can attest that Larson’s Kringle is as good or (hard to admit) maybe even better than any pastry you would find in Copenhagen. Larson’s Kringle is absolutely, without any doubt, simply astonishing 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰

Google
Really good pastries that taste just like what my grandmother made for me when I was a little girl. I received quite the bundle for my birthday from a longtime friend today & everything was so good & familiar from the past. We had homemade everything- mostly Scandinavian because we are from Norway. Everything was very comparable to the homemade desserts & breads that we ate fresh from the oven when we went bounding in the door to my grandparents after school or during the holidays. A literal sweet reminder! Well done! 😋 🩵

Google
Larsen Bakery sucks. DO NOT get the frog, it’s way too sweet. The outside is mint, mint, and the inside is strawberry? Frozen whipped cream with strawberry? What kind of combo is that? Larsen Bakery is honestly the worst bakery I’ve ever encountered. All of their food is excessively sweet. At this point, their desserts practically give you type 2 diabetes. Honestly, I wouldn’t even be surprised if they somehow managed to give someone type 3 diabetes. They don’t even label what’s inside their sweets. The frog was absolutely disgusting and there were only two of them, probably because no one else wanted something that sugary and diabetic. After just one bite, I honestly don’t even know if I got diabetes. DO NOT GET ANY SWEETS AT LARSEN’S BAKERY

Google
First time at the bakery. Bought a jalapeño cream cheese roll, and cream cheese, and mocha coffee. Delicious and soft bread. The coffee was créame, not water down, and rich in chocolate flavor. My German fiancé said it reminded her of back home. Would recommend.

Google
Randomly stopped into this place when traveling yesterday and it was amazing. They had maple bars, pastries, donuts, savory breads and baked goods as well as delicious coffee. Was one of the best finds of our vacation and if I lived in the area I would come here on a weekly if not more frequent basis.

Yelp
I love the huge assortment here, and especially the almond pastries. The huge apricot and almond pastry is a crowd pleaser, and the apricot pairs perfectly. The cream cheese bun is delightful too. Cherry danishes are very solid here as well and the perfect balance of tart and sweet. The pastry flakiness is soft and buttery, and has the perfect homemade taste. This is definitely one of the places to go for this style of Danish pastry. The service was super friendly too, and they have something for everyone.

Yelp
Omgoodness I thought this place would have much more reviews given the number of reviews on Google. I stumbled upon this place today by accident. I was running an errand in Seattle, drove past it and googled it to see whether it was legit or not. Glad I made the decision to check it out. Right away my eyes gravitated to the 50% off day old bread. I got a poppyseed loaf of some sort and it was only like $3 for a HUGE soft loaf. I also ordered a ham and Swiss pastry. It was slightly oily based on the oil residue from the bag, but the pastry puff on the outside was buttery yet light tasting and airy. I loved it so much I wish I had another one to scarf down. Anyways kudos to you guys!

Yelp
The best way I can describe these pastries is as melting-in-your-mouth-good. Beware, this is a popular spot so it'll be a bit of a wait, but trust me, it's absolutely worth it! I was only able to snap a picture of a turkey themed chocolate cupcake but I've tried their chocolate, raspberry and ham & cheese croissants too. I highly recommend them all but I think my favorite is definitely the ham and cheese one; you can taste the quality of the ingredients they use! Definitely a spot worth checking out.

Yelp
Happened to be on the neighborhood and Larsen's caught my eye. I'm always down for a delicious bakery so I happily went inside. They have so many options so I bought about $35 worth of pastries and they all ended up being delicious. I also got a raspberry mocha and it was delicious! Will definitely stop by again when I'm in the area.

Yelp
They did a fantastic job with a graduation cake. I had to miss the party due to illness but multiple people took pics and commented on how delicious it was!

Yelp
Delicious, incredible, a staple and a must!! Favorites from here are their rye loaf, fruit danish (any of them) and the savory pastries, like ham & cheese croissant. Also recently tried the Fattigmann - they look like little bread stick twists but have a delightful cardamom flavor that's not too sweet and perfect for snacking on, alone or with tea. As there is so much to choose from, try to get something new every visit! Long lines can form, and they do run out of things, but like moves quickly, the staff is friendly/helpful/knowledgeable, and you really can't go wrong in your selections. You can stand outside and see what's happening in the large kitchen.

Robert C.

Yelp
Worse donuts, cookies and cupcakes ever. The ingredients tasted old and stale. The dough tasted like old bread. Your better off getting those bakery products at a grocery store. Recommendation avoid at all costs unless you enjoy paying $16 for 6 stale bakery it Service was not friendly, the six of us were not even greeted. Ambiance was interesting we couldn't tell if they were open and lighting was poor. We should have passed this place and went somewhere else.

Yelp
This was a great late evening dessert spot. There were so many choices and everything looked delicious. We got the sugar cake donut, the lemon raspberry cake and the poppyseed pinwheel danish. The danish was the best out of the three. I love poppyseed and this was nice and flaky without being overly sweet. The lemon cake wasn't very lemony. If are someone who just wants a little zest, this cake was very subtle and would be perfect for you.

Yelp
A wonderful little danish bakery in the Ballard neighborhood. The selection is immense! It's hard to choose from all the beautiful pastries on display in the case. We've picked up their kringle before for a dessert to bring to a party, it's lighter than some others I have had and only comes in almost flavor, but it is quite tasty. They have a strange roll too that is like a bread roll on the outside and jalapeno cream cheese in the middle that is surprisingly good! There are a few bar seats inside and a couple tables outside, but not a ton of seating overall.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Neighborhood danish bakery! Fast service. Take a number most days. Check out east wall for day old bakery items.
google avatar

Trinh M.

Yelp
Cute bakery, I've been here a few times. I'd recommend the European baked goods. The donuts, are not bad, but I wouldn't come just for those. I believe they have day old bagels that you can buy at a discounted price.
google avatar

Krista R.

Yelp
We have stopped in a couple times and we've enjoyed everything we've tried! So many yummy options. I'm new to the neighborhood and it's nice to find a local bakery with a warm feel. I'm excited to return!

John K.

Yelp
Get the maple bar. It's life changing. I've been going here for 20 years and the pastries are always delicious.

Yelp
Fantastic bakery tucked away on the corner of 80th and 24th street. Loads of baked goodies from cakes, assorted cookies, doughnuts, scones, macarons, loaves of bread and more. They have coffee too! We got a bag of special cookies- you can choose an assortment from the case and they weigh it. This was the highlight- excellent taste and reminded me of almond butter cookies we picked up in rome on a trip. They have cookies with walnuts, some with marzipan, some with Excellent taste, no artificial flavors that felt synthetic and really fresh. Also got a ham and swiss croissant and caramel macchiato with oat milk. The croissant was good. They have a microwave for you to warm up items if you like- but a toaster oven might have been better as the croissant gets a little melty in the microwave , but sooooo good when warm! They have some seating and the friendliest service. The young lady who explained all the different cookies to us was a treat- so upbeat and nice. I will definitely come back for the cookies and to try out more of their selection. Definitely a hidden gem!

Aliyah M.

Yelp
Larsen's is so legit, they are unbelievably creative in their custom cake designs and bake a really yummy cake. My go-to cake location fr. Check out this yugioh cake they made for me. Beautiful stuff, incredible staff. I know my desserts, and yugioh cake is among them. Bless up

Yelp
This is my first time coming here and I didn't expect the place to be so big! They have a variety of baked goods from danishes, to bread, to cookies and donuts, literally everything! We ended up getting a sticky bun, a strawberry and cheese croissant and a ham and cheese croissant. We bought it cold so we brought it it home and heat them up before eating. They were all really good, not to strong of the flavor, the flakiness is still there and it was good. The sticky bun was surprisingly good leaving it out at room temperature. They also have a small section where you can buy their one day old pastries for 50% off which is pretty good. Overall, if I'm in the area, I will definitely be back

Kelly B.

Yelp
What has happened to this bakery!? The pastries aren't as good as they used to be in the customer service is awful! I waited 15 minutes to check out some day old pastries. Two people working! It took one guy more than the 15 minutes that I was there to get pastries and make coffee for two people! If the two people working, moved any slower they would've been going backwards. They really need to get their act together! There's plenty of bakeries in the city! So disappointing! I guess I won't be going back anymore

Yelp
Yummy!!! We wanted to have a Danish kransekage to honor my heritage, and this was perfect! Easy to order and pick up! Tasted so good and our guests loved it- it was the first time most of them had tried it! Tasted so sweet and fresh! Can't wait for my next excuse for a visit!

Yelp
I've lived within 5 minutes of Larsen's for years now, but somehow never made it in to give it a try until last weekend. It was alright...fine for a breakfast snack, but nothing to write home about. We got several croissants, a danish, and a cinnamon roll. Unsurprisingly, the danish was the best (it is a Danish bakery after all). I'd give it a "pretty solid." The croissants were notably lacking in the crispy, buttery flakiness that makes good croissants so delicious. The bits with burnt cheese at the ends were pretty tasty, but otherwise they were very meh. The cinnamon roll was decent, but also not amazing. With Besalu and Fuji Bakery within 15 minutes, significantly better pastry options are not far away.

Yelp
Best birthday cakes! They do a great job on custom orders. This unicorn cake is vanilla with raspberry cream frosting inside. Huge hit!!!
google avatar

San J.

Yelp
Way Overpriced - I'm all about supporting small business - but you don't get what you pay for here. I recently went there to get some cookies. And unfortunately, for $3.50, I at a minimum expect my cookies to be cooked. Instead, what I got was mostly raw dough. Now unless you wanna get salmonella or your guts out...I'd find a different bakery.
google avatar

Jasmine A.

Yelp
Excellent fruit tart! I was really surprised and impressed by how fantastic this tart tasted. For someone who has a sweet tooth, it satisfied my dessert craving. The custard and fruit were sweet. The crust was buttery and had a layer of chocolate. The bottom of the tart had a bit of frosting. I wish I got the large instead of the small!
google avatar

Foodie For Life L.

Yelp
A+ service and my caramel latte with oat milk was outstanding!! I haven't even tried the pastries yet, but I imagine they are just as delicious.
google avatar

J W.

Yelp
The little cakes are just perfect for two - four people. Decadant and delicious. A great go to for real marizipan. Highly recommend them. They are my go to for birthday cakes.
google avatar

Stevie B.

Yelp
Very disappointed. Ordered the almond cookie and initially tasted good, but very quick chemical aftertaste. The sticky bun was very dry (we did not order anything day old). Other items were excessively sweet. FYI, there is a service charge they don't tell you about.
google avatar

Ivana N.

Yelp
Excellent old school bakery....enjoy it while it's still here.... you know the direction Seattle is headed... two thumbs up !
google avatar

Alexia R.

Yelp
I got a buttercream style cake and miniature princess cake. The staff was SUPER nice. The princess cake was good, but the regular small cake's buttercream frosting was grainy. Kind of disappointing and gross to serve a cake for a special event with thin grainy frosting, especially given how much they charge. And the cake itself was dense and kind of dry. Would have been better off with a grocery store cake :/ I'll probably come back if I ever want princess cake again, but not for other items I was also a little peeved to see a surcharge on my bill. The law requires you to disclose that. Had I known I would have grabbed cash before I came.

Yelp
Good (far above average) bakery with a vast selection in a big bakery store. Most everything here is good, some of it is great. With a selection this big, it's hard to make everything the best. Some of the recipes aren't exactly the taste I would expect, but they're close to it (and still good). Haven't had anything I did not like from here, and many things are excellent. Worth a visit.

Yelp
Wow wow wow!!!! I drive by Larsen's bakery on a daily basis and people rave about it. I remember during the holidays seeing lines out the door. Not sure what took me so long to swing in there and get some baked goods. The people are so nice and helpful. I had a work meeting and wanted to get some morning treats for everyone. I got a few Danish twists which were so moist and had tons of flavor. The cinnamon one was so delicious. Also got the almond and apple flavors. Last minute I decided to get the almond Danish Kringle. It was right out of the oven. Win win! I think they are known for this. Being a baker myself I found their store to be so inviting and the cakes were amazing looking. I see a lady in the window every morning decorating the cakes and she does an amazing job! I highly recommend swinging by and loading up. I wanted to eat all their donuts especially the plain ol' sugar donut which is my fav so when I'm in the mood for that I'll be going back!

Marilyn S.

Yelp
Are you kidding? This is a raspberry filling? Their twists have become increasing dry and void of fillings. I order a Kringle every year for my cousin in California. I always have to make a special request to make sure there is filling in it, especially since it costs so much to ship. I have lived in this area for many years and have been buying here since the 70's and I finally had to say something. It's so disappointing to see Larsen's in such decline. Quality of old has disappeared.
google avatar

Carrera Z.

Yelp
Have you ever watched the Great British Baking Show and wanted to know what one of the technical challenges tastes like? You'll probably find it here. Take a number in the morning because this is a neighborhood favorite and the line is out the door. Skip Costco and get your next cake here!
google avatar

Yelp
Many years ago, when I moved to Seattle, I lived two blocks from Larsen's. Saturdays are for bakeries and I would always walk up there for my sweet weekend treats. Now, I live in North Seattle but I still stop by when I can. Larsen's takes me back to a simpler time when I could get an entire box of pastry for $20 instead of the typical 4 items I get from other bakeries. There's so much to choose from so I'll just pick a few of my favorites. Airbrushed sugar cookies are seasonally painted. In the spring I can find flowers and butterflies and they're so pretty. I always try to get a few kinds of brioche. Soft, buttery bread is always a good thing. I often pick up croissants to pan au chocolat. French pastry is my weakness and I can't say no to flakey goodness. The donut section is full of classics and I grab glazed or sugar for the road. The selection here is vast and I'm always tempted to get one of everything! Loaves of bread, full cakes or slices, seasonal favorites like cringles fill the store! Larsen's has always been a special place to me and every time I visit, it feels like home.
google avatar

E M.

Yelp
I ordered some rolls. This employee grabbed my rolls with his bear hand... Disgusting!!! He was just handling cashier right before I ordered. I should have said something but I was so shocked I couldn't say anything. During COVID (mask mandatory time) too, I witnessed that one employee wasn't wearing mask property and coughing around. I stopped going there for a while... They need to tell all employees to be clean. No wonder they only get "okay" for safety rate. It was convenience that the place is close to my house, but it is time for me to stop going there permanently. Sorry.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Visiting from Arizona and had to try this place. Solomon was super helpful. Five stars for sure.
google avatar

Joshua M.

Yelp
Based solely on a Danish Kringle a Seattle friend delivered to Cali, I'll just have to go ahead and give Larsen's Danish Bakery a 5 star rating. The Kringle comes in a presentable box and is simply large in size which gives it an impressive look. Looks can be deceiving, but they weren't in this case! The Kringle was enjoyed by everybody who partook in the quick consumption of the massive pastry and it has convinced me to stop by the bakery the next time I get to travel to the Pacific Northwest.
google avatar

Kiana C.

Yelp
Cute bakery with tons of options. Got the apple strudel - it had a good flavor and looked crisp on the top but it had a soggy bottom (the pastry on bottom was hardly cooked). Not sure if I just got the wrong thing. Other than that, it was pretty affordable ($5 for this and a drip coffee)
google avatar

Erika M.

Yelp
I highly recommend Larsen's. Everything they make is delicious! I purchased several dozen for a large work meeting and they were a hit! The napoleon's hat (marzipan in shortbread) and almond horns were especially popular. My boss who doesn't like overly sweet foods loved the Stollen. I also received great service from the staff. I ordered "winter holiday cookies" and they asked plenty of questions to ensure I got exactly what I wanted. I'll be back for sure!
google avatar

Sheri W.

Yelp
We were only in Seattle for the weekend, but Larsen's was so good that we came here twice. I was very impressed by the apple fritter which wasn't heavy and doughy like many can be, but instead had crispy edges enhanced by an abundance of glaze. I would say the fritter was a little light on fruit though and tasted more of cinnamon than apple. The real star for me was a flaky, crispy cream cheese and blueberry danish with a generous amount of sweet, rich filling. I don't normally care for danish much, but the counter person recommended it and so glad I listened and tried it. I'm sort of glad I don't live near Larsen's as that danish would be hard to resist if I had more access to it.
google avatar

Jimie R.

Yelp
I think I've died and gone to heaven! I ate the apple strudel and a turnover and washed it down with a delicious iced latte. The best desserts ever.
google avatar

Louise P.

Yelp
The pastries and cakes aren't very good. Croissants have lots lots of butter. The cookies aren't bad. Definitely a quantity over quality kinda place. The staff here are super unfriendly, and really seem like they don't care about customer service (except for a younger guy that I usually see later in the day). It's unfortunate that this place isn't better.

Nicole A.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. Waited for 10min to get helped. 4 workers standing behind the counter talking with each other. They looked up at me and then kept talking. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Anneliese I.

Yelp
I have been going here since my childhood. It is a family tradition to get the marzipan cake. It's my all time favorite cake.
google avatar

RiceMom L.

Yelp
We stopped in post-Christmas. Our first time. The two cash register staff did not offer help; they couldn't answer questions about basic key ingredients (like, does this one feature cardamom?), a few times they admitted they hadn't eaten the product. They exhibited zero pride, enthusiasm, hospitality, or even the most basic knowledge of their products. Did mgt hire vegans by mistake???? My joy and excitement at my first visit here was so deflated by the experience, I'd be hesitant to return. The baked goods themselves were just ok but there's a wide selection of both Danishes and pastries, and we only tried two things
google avatar

Wendi K.

Yelp
I haven't actually been inside the physical location, but these pastries were brought into my office. I tried this super flaky Danish-like almond swirl pastry with poppy seeds, and OMG it was so good! It came with a slathering of icing too. NEED to come in and try more items :)

Winnie A.

Yelp
Great pastries. So flaky my arms ache just thinking about how many folds it would take to get this result in my cooking. Too much variety to list here. Good place to pick up breakfast breads and drinks.
google avatar

Mirabelle G.

Yelp
I've stopped here a few times to grab treats, and they're delicious every time. We especially love the tiramisu and croissants but it's all wonderful. The crew is always super helpful and friendly as well!

Stephanie P.

Yelp
Vile. On 3/12/23 2:45PM witnessed a large disheveled looking male employee in a green sweatshirt placing baked goods in the display with his bare hands. Other employees wearing gloves. Absolutely disgusting. Was a regular customer. No way will we ever return.
google avatar

Don K.

Yelp
After my trip to Denmark earlier in the year, I had to visit this bakery. Widely known in the area for their variety of pastries, I was hoping for their version of my favorite in Aarhus. While they didn't have kartoffelkage, the selection was quite diverse. I ended up with their portabella mushroom croissant. Flaky with meaty fillings, my hunger was sated for a bit. So many choices! It makes your head spin. They also gave daily coffee specials, mostly flavored drips. I'm a espresso drinker and unfortunately it was not good. If you cover it up with cream and flavors, I'm sure it would be fine. For $1.65 for a dopio, it's probabky one of the most inexpensive espresso in the city. Visit for everything else but the espresso.

Stan K.

Yelp
Some items are great, like the pies, others like the donuts are just so so. Day old donuts supposedly 50% off but still crazy expensive. To use a credit card they sneak in a 3.25% surcharge. I couldn't find this fee posted anywhere. You only see it (if you're paying attention) on the POS machine.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
Still the best bakery in Seattle, and Washington state IMHO. I can't say a word, I have to type something, but my photos do all the talking. I will add, though, that even the espresso is top notch. The maple bars are beyond ultra deliciousness and the last bakery that I know of that makes flavored marzipan cakes. Sometimes, they offer great deals for bargain shoppers on day old combination boxes, and they are--well, fabulous is an understatement. Nothing is bad here, it's all good. In fact, this shop is right below the gates of heaven.
