Phoenix’s Best Mexican Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"Using her grandmother’s recipes, chef and owner Elizabeth Hernandez makes the dishes of her native Oaxaca at this charming Sunnyslope restaurant, including the fifteen — or more — sauces for which the restaurant is named. Naturally, mole is a speciality here, and five varieties (green, red, black, yellow, and mole stew) are available with entrees (pork or chicken) or enchiladas. The menu also features cheese empanadas, filled with squash blossoms, epazote, and huitlacoche; memelas (akin to sopes), tlayudas (think tostadas with a generous, crackling base), and an excellent selection of mezcal." - McConnell Quinn

Phoenix, Arizona’s Best Restaurant Dishes and Drinks | Eater Phoenix

"Mole is relatively easy to come by in Phoenix, but it’s a hard dish to do well. Often dry or overpowering, few restaurants capture the true essence of the sauce. Where better to be blessed by proper mole than a restaurant dedicated to traditional Oaxacan cuisine? A blend of over twenty ingredients, mole includes dried chilies, nuts, and spices with just a hint of chocolate, resulting in a dark, velvety sauce that balances sweetness with subtle heat. The dish is served over a tender quarter chicken and a dollop of rice." - McConnell Quinn

Google
I had lunch the other day and ordered the Pork Pozole and it was absolutely DELICIOUS!! The service was excellent, friendly and very welcoming! Clean facility with great vibes. Highly recommended!

Google
As a three top, we way over ordered. I would do it all again. Everything was seasoned perfectly and had amazing flavors. Can’t wait to visit again and come back. I also had a delicious Michilada. Yum!

Google
It was a perfect day to sit outside, so we really enjoyed the patio. The staff was super friendly and happy to give us suggestions, and both meals we tried were delicious. We liked it so much we came back again on our last trip this place is definitely a hidden gem.

The atmosphere was very comfortable, service was great, and the food was Absolutely Delicious. I will definitely bring my family back again & I will recommend it to my friends.

Google
My friend and I visited this restaurant because we live in the area and constantly pass it but neither of us had ever tried it. I’m so glad we did. The food was amazing, the service was great and especially the little mango drink that was fresh squeezed. It was so delicious. I had two of them.

Google
First time there. Mezcal was so good! Also all the food we tasted. The local is colorful and plenty of painting details that makes me feel home (in México).

Google
Authentic Oaxacan dishes served up fresh. It's always good and the servers are professional and friendly. One of my favorite dishes is the pork mole. Love their guacamole and tortillas, too.

I’m from the south of Mexico, I am familiarized with authentic Oaxaca cuisine, and when I first saw there was a place where they sell Tlayudas I knew I have try it. I was having low expectations about this place, but I was completely wrong, just when I entered to the restaurant I smelled the Scent of OAXACA, and its marvelous cuisine. I ordered a Tlayuda with mixed meats, and a Guava drink. The tlayuda is crunchy, delicious, and extremely good ingredients. The size of it was ENORMOUS, it is completely worth it for 15 dollars, nowadays in Oaxaca it is the same PRICE, and it is not that big and good. The owners of the restaurant are from Oaxaca Central Valley, where they appreciate good food, and being honest with their people, this is best place I have been in Phoenix. IT IS MUST GO IN ARIZONA. #SUPPORTLOCAL

Yelp
Las 15 Salsas Restaurant Oaxaqueño offers a delightful dining experience that captures the essence of Oaxacan cuisine. The cozy interior and inviting outdoor patio set the stage for an enjoyable meal. The attentive service ensures a pleasant evening. The mescal Serrano pepper margaritas pack a punch with their strong flavor and spicy kick, while the sacrificio cocktail tantalizes the taste buds with its mezcal, smoked rosemary, and Jamaica infusion. The appetizer of memelas bursts with flavor and the perfect texture, offering a warm, soft interior and lightly crispy edges. The tlayuda, adorned with beef, pork, chorizo, refried beans, and Oaxacan cheese on a crispy base, impresses with its generous portion size and delicious blend of ingredients. Overall, Las 15 Salsas Restaurant Oaxaqueño delivers an authentic Oaxacan culinary experience that is sure to satisfy. Highly recommended for those seeking flavorful dishes and a welcoming ambiance.

Yelp
I was looking for something new to try and Las 15 did not disappoint! Las 15 Salsas is a nice restaurant with a cozy ambiance. Entering we were greeted fairly quickly by a friendly hostess. She was quick, but was the only one on the floor. The hostess was also the server, food runner, and busser; as a result she was extremely busy. Fortunately, aside from small wait times, she was still very attentive. The menu has great options and both plates I ordered were delicious. Along with the great flavors the presentation was outstanding!

Yelp
From a Oaxaqueña, the food is as close as Oaxaca Culinary is. The flavor was so good and very present. It was aesthetically pleasing and delicious too! It had the perfect spice, temperature, and portion! The tortillas are warm and just the perfect yellow corn. We were sat outside during the light rain. The hot cafe de olla hit the spot. The food was so warm and steaming when we got it. The mole was delicious and thick, not too spicy but if you want extra spice, they bring some delicious red and green salsa. The rice was a perfect addition to the mole leftover! The place is small but big enough to enjoy brunch, and lunch and even sneak away to get a mezcalito. I ordered the enchilada trio with chicken. The green and red enchiladas were not my favorite, however the mole was so good. I would definitely buy the mole enchiladas in a heartbeat. The tamales de mole were served on a banana leaf and it was soft enough to cut through but even to enjoy. Service was good as it can be. I thought it was weird the server was taking our order on his phone but hey! Innovation at its finest. Definitely a must visit. Honestly this place won my heart. I will definitely be back and enjoy the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Truly authentic food and overall experience. Everything tasted fresh from the tortillas to the black beans, all seasoned well with exotic spices and unique flavors. The only thing making it a 4 not a 5 star was the live music was way too loud. If in the area try to stop in and bring an appetite!
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible. A must if you visit or live in Phoenix. My sister and I stopped by having never tried Oaxacan cuisine, and we are now big fans. First of all, I have never liked mole until I tried theirs in the enchilada trio. I also am not a big fan of meat but the tlayuda tradicional is mindblowing. I highly recommend this spot!!! The service was friendly and super helpful with the menu! The restaurant had spots to sit outside or in. We went around lunch time during a weekday so it was not crowded at all.

Yelp
Had the mole blanco and my husband had the 3 enchiladas both amazing the mole was one of the best I have had. Place is small so expect to wait for a table unless your willing to sit out on the patio which if the weather is nice would be okay. We also had the house margarita which was very good. Staff was nice and helpful if you had questions with the menu.

Yelp
Location; Found this place from a Foodie on TikTok, it is located on Hatcher road - small and itimate inside. Food; Very authentic food first ordered the memelas, so tasty and yummy. My main course was the Chili Relleno with just cheese, and it was really tasty. Everything was homemade, and fresh. I did order a michelado, that was very tasty. Service; everyone was super friendly, they literally crush the ice for all drinks and you can hear it.

Yelp
The food was delicious I will be coming back tried the Fajitas and my wife the Enchiladas. Bringing more family and friends next time.

Yelp
Found this place a few weeks ago on our way to the Arizona Humane Society. The location is not the best and I wouldn't come alone at night. However, once you are inside the food and service make up for the location. The staff is friendly and the food is authentically delicious. My husband and I love tacos We decided next time to try something new as this restaurant is known for its Oaxaca food. I am not a big chocolate fan so I am not sure if I'll like it. However, I do love tamales and spicy food! What is Oaxaca cuisine???? Great question!! Oaxaca cuisine is from southern Mexico in the city of Oaxaca. Oaxaca is well known for its ingredients of chocolate which is prepared in preparation for hot species. Oaxacan-style tamales will have variations of mole sauce (mole sauce - local papers and Mexican chocolate. This is my year to step out of my comfort food zone and try new things!

Yelp
I love this place, the food is good and it is local: so it has it's own standing, not selling/buying a name (for those, that, read my other reviews/what would be the difference in how I is reviewing of THEM), for you can tell that they care: when they are there, helping you to have an exercise. Yes, I say this place gets a 10 out of 5 stars

Yelp
Found this place via an article on AZ Central. Sounded interesting so stopped in for dinner on a Friday night. The place is easy to find with plenty of parking. The restaurant itself is good sized with a mix of indoor and outdoor seating. The ambiance is nothing special, but not off-putting. Neighborhood and family run vibe. The menu is fairly large. I was interested in trying the more regional items so I passed on the typical enchiladas, tacos, burritos, etc.. I went for guacamole & tlayuda Chips to start. Quite tasty with a good bit of spice. The chips are interesting - not the typical chips you would get in a Mexican restaurant. For an entree, I went for a tlayuda combinada. It is a large tlayuda chip covered with refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and a mix of meats (pork, chorizo, and beef). It was quite good! Different than other Mexican dishes I have tried. If I have any downgrades, it would be the service. It was quite slow. We were not in a hurry so it was not that big of a deal. That said, it might not be ideal for you. Worth a look. N*joy!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was super good. We has the tlayuda combinada-- great flavors. For my meal, I had the mole cafe-- super good. Came with rice and homemade tortillas.

Yelp
Clean, comfortable, welcoming. Traditional music, friendly service. Delicious Café de Olla. Kind and accommodating server despite our disorganized group. Delicious meals, flavorful but not too spicy for the gringos... the mole is superb. Look forward to returning. A suggestion would be to clean restrooms at least hourly as one of the fixtures needed help in that regard. Surprising as the room was otherwise well kept.

Lorraine M.

Yelp
I talked to my friend into going to this restaurant because of the menu. There were a couple of things that didn't go well - we were seated by a family with a very loud child. The booth was in the far corner off of the bar area. As we were reviewing the menu, a brown bug began to crawl up the wall behind my friend. I had to smash and kill it which really bothered my friend. she ordered the enchiladas and they were cold upon being brought to the table. The portions were OK and the service was OK also

Yelp
Super legit oaxacan food in Phoenix. It has cute outdoor patio or indoor seating. I would eat here everyday. We got the fiesta 3 mole plates which has red, black and estofado (stew) moles. This plate is good for two people. And also the tamal qaxaqueno was delicious. It is wrapped in banana leaf, with chicken inside and soft maza. Side note, the place also sells oaxacan coffee to go, grasshopper snack in Chile lime and mole blocks to make at home.
google avatar

Lisette R.

Yelp
Best Oaxaca food in town!!! Everything was fresh and so good from the tacos to the tlayudas! I 1000% recommend this place!
google avatar

Megan A.

Yelp
Hate to do this but it was weak. They are stingy with portions from rice to chips. Taste like they are keeping costs low. All food was Bland. I have easily had better mole. I don't see how places that are mediocre can stay in business with so much competition. I ordered the most popular dishes. Plants on the patio are in impressive condition.
google avatar

Tabytha B.

Yelp
Cute and authentic food and drinks! The food was made fresh from scratch. From the drinks to the chips and salsa even! I will definitely be going back!

Pam D.

Yelp
Was very hot, summer and no one greeted or gave waters in an acceptable amount of time. Left without eating. Was unfortunate...heard it was Very Good at previous location.

Yelp
Love it. The staff was simply amazing. The food and drinks were perfect! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Finally real Mexican food in Arizona. I grew up in Phoenix as a kid, but moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and every time I come back I'm disappointed by the Mexican food here. Most places don't even include rice and beans on your burrito which is unheard of in L.A. I eat 1-3 burritos every single day in SoCal because the food is so good and cheap. There's bad places there too of course, but it's like a 50/50 chance it's gonna be amazing. This place has that real street food style Mexican food made fresh daily. I can tell the difference. I would give this place five stars even if it were in the heart of L.A. That's how good the burrito de pollo was. The salsas were also on point. Horchata was aight, but I wish they had an option for a smaller one rather than 32oz for $4.50 lol. My waitress was super nice. Don't forget to tip! As someone that's had plenty of jobs like this, everything counts even if it's just a dollar. I'll be back next time I roll through Phoenix.
google avatar

Ali A.

Yelp
Don't let its location on Hatcher put you off. This restaurant serves very good and tasty Mexican food; specifically Oaxacan. Try the molé tamale and the maize-and-coffee based folk drink (I can't recall the name). The rice and beans were tasty as was the chile relleno. The food tastes fresh, in other words. I would dine here again.
google avatar

Yelp
We came for just one dish: chicken enmoladas. Kristy and I fled Idaho to come to Phoenix for a quick three-day trip. I had researched restaurants and Barrio and Las 15 Salsas were at the top of my list. We had a late breakfast and weren't terribly hungry so we shared an order of the enmoladas, similar to an enchilada but instead of a chile sauce it was drenched in mole negro. Some mole negros that I've eaten have a dry taste. This one, Oaxaca-style, had a great balance and was quite flavorful. The house chips were served with three salsas, a tomatillo, a chile de arbol and a habanero. Each was flavorful. The two latter ones had a nice bite. It's wonderful to experience Mexican restaurants that aren't the same-old, same-old American-style. We really enjoyed our meal.
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
The staff was nice. I paid $56 dollar for 10 tamales and they were awful, absolutely disgusting. Dry masa, nasty bitter mole, old stale chicken inside. I ate a half of a tamale and threw the rest in the garbage. But like I said the staff was polite.
google avatar

Daisha W.

Yelp
So good! Great flavor and presentation with every dish. The Horchata was the best I've had in a long time! We just moved into the neighborhood today and I can see this being one of our favorite restaurants

Yelp
We live near this place, but had really never noticed it until a Cinco de Mayo article in The AZ Republic was published recommending it. We visited the day after May 5th, to avoid the rush. Arrived around 1:30 and there were only a few people dining. Perfect. For drinks, we had Zipolites and they were delicious! My husband ordered the pork pozole and I got the fish and shrimp soup. Our dishes looked, smelled and tasted divine!! We also sampled the black & brown moles which were incredible (especially the brown). Our server was very pleasant, answered all of our questions and made great recommendations. The place itself is very clean, colorful and well-maintained. Our only regret is that we just discovered Las 15 Salsas, and have not been coming here for the last 14 years! You can bet we will be making up for lost time. Fabulous local gem! Oh! The finishing touch was the chapulines we offered at the end of the meal. Grasshoppers! Yum
google avatar

Jose S.

Yelp
For a place called "Las 15 Salsas" there was a severe lack of them. We literally only got salsa with our chips and salsa. We got our food super late too, even though there wasn't that much people there. Our server dropped off our food, and we never saw her again. No drink refills, nothing. I had to get up and flag someone down to pay. It's a shame, as I feel there is potential here, and it is very likely that we got caught with a bad server/rough night. Based on other reviews, it seems this is normally a solid place. I might come back and hopefully have a better experience, but I won't rush to do that. So many good restaurants I still have to hit up...

Amay S.

Yelp
Loved the vibe of this restaurant. Food was great, service was great, and the decor was also really cool. They have a nice selection of mezcal and mezcal cocktails and the tlayudas were really well made! The tortas are also really good and I loved that they had a good vegetarian selection. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
I went in with high hopes and was greatly disappointed. Ordered a carne asada burrito and it was so small. I'm 5 ft tall with tiny hands and this burrito was a toothpick. Barely any filling, so much for meat beans and rice (guacamole, what a lie) Anywho, avoid this place if you want a nice burrito.
google avatar

Yelp
The worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. The attitude was horrible. Food was disgusting and no where near Mexican. I am Mexican and have been to Mexico and had their food, this doesn't even compare to it. This isn't it. Restaurant was pretty dark too. No light. Bathroom was disgusting, not clean and only one working stall. No toilet paper or sheets to put in the seat. Gender signs are in Spanish so someone who doesn't speak Spanish wouldn't even know which to go in. It's not clear and there's no pictures. My friend and I were so upset, we finished the food and drinks and left so fast. The frozen margaritas were good but everything else horrible. I ordered chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. Rice was white with tons of butter (tiny ice cream scoop serving), enchiladas weren't even baked just in a folded tortilla with chicken in it and flooded with some weird tasting red/brown sauce and beans were literally placed in a blender with who knows what kind of seasonings. The beans were so gross we told the man "I didn't like them" he took it back and I kid you not he laughed and said "maybe next time!" Um, no. There's no next time. My friend and I just talked and finish up quickly. He brings us a bill. We tell him, we need the beans taken off (they were separate from the enchiladas) they were so watery and tasted gross and we didn't like them. With the straightest face and nastiest attitude he said "no that's what you ordered" I said okay but no one ate them, I did not like them. He said with more attitude "that's what you ordered sorry". I was furious, because wtf, I've never been to a restaurant that had an issue with taking something off the bill that you didn't eat nor like. He literally took them back a couple minutes after bringing them out. So I said whatever the bill is separate. He has the nerve to ask us so split it half and half or what did you both get as if he didn't take our order and serve us. So we told him and then swiped our card. He looked at me when it came for me to enter a tip part and I never hit no tip so fast in my life. Like sir, those beans were your tip, f*ck your tip. Got my receipt and left. I will never return. Food and service was sh*t. No wonder it's always dead when I pass by. The picture is the frozen margaritas and the tiny chip basket you get when you sit down. There was a side of an ounce of salsa that tasted like red hot sauce with the chips.

Adore D.

Yelp
The portions are small and expensive I paid about $80 for 6 streets tacos with beans and rice... we ordered two margaritas it tasted more like slushy than a margarita mix the drink kept separating... the food tasted good honestly but started to have a stomach ache after it might just be from the grease but somewhat satisfied:/
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
Mole mole mole! Holy Mole! Thanks helpers for the recommendation. This place is such a hole in the wall I'm not sure if I'd have ever stopped in. Well worth it. Margaritas and chips and salsa start things out great. I hade the flatbread like mole filled giant tostada. OMG. Yes yes yes. I basically ate till I couldn't eat anymore and then ate more. It was that good. My company ate the red Chile chimi. I'm so going back here to eat way more
google avatar

Yelp
OMMFG!!!! This place is it. All i needed was warm salad and i would have felt like i was in oaxaca. I had the huevo's divorciados but not actually divorced (not separated) they were amazing. The salsas, the chips, the tortillas everything was perfect. My wife had the chilaquiles and they were the best.

Yelp
Great place to enjoy some Oaxacan food. The estabishment is not in the greatest area but is worth trying if your near 19th ave and Hatcher. The A/C was not working the day we went. Luckily, it was not that warm out so we were still able to sit inside and enjoy our food. Our server was amazing. She was very attentive, welcoming and always made sure our drinks were filled and we did not need anything. This place has a variety of food selections to pick from. Keep in mind their food is not spicy but very flavorful. I would come back in the future and would recommend to anyone looking to try something different.

Mateo L.

Yelp
No regresare.

Yelp
We were heading back to California and randomly found this place based on a Yelp search. It was practically at the end of the road lol. It was completely unexpected how good the food was. The young woman was super helpful and friendly in providing guidance on the menu. Three of us ended up sharing an enchilada trio order and quesillo y flor de calabaza. Both were excellent and plenty of food for us. We totally recommend this place.

Lisa F.

Yelp
Had another great meal here last night. The mole enchiladas were outstanding and my margarita was delicious. Our waitress was pleasant and efficient. Overall great dining experience. Not the place for the selfie crowd. Send it OK

Yelp
Small little place that is a little run down yet clean. We ordered the chicken and Carne asada tacos and the Carne Asada plate. The chicken was cooked a little too long, it was a little chewy and stiff. The flavor was good. The asada taco was very good. The meat was soft and flavorful. The Carne Asada plate was not as good as the taco. The meat was dry and had little flavor. The rice and beans on the other hand were very tasty. Good portion size. The chips and salsa were good. Two spicy and one milder salsa. The chips were crispy and fresh, and not greasy. The mango margarita was fresh and good with chucks of mango in it that made it very good. We were the only ones in the restaurant ordering food. Service was somewhat slow considering what we ordered. Worth the visit. Took food to go for our friends. The fish taco had so Much flavor and was fresh. The Mole Negro was some of the best my friend has had, he raves about it. The horchata was also very good.

Yelp
Just ordered 2 X lg pasole to go. This is a Mom & Pop (which we like supporting) They took my phone order 30 min before they closed without issue. Told them it would be pretty close to quitting time before I could get there. Owner said " no rush Sir we will wait for you" what amazing customer service. So I went there place is clean and it smelled amazing when I walked in. People were so nice. I had asked for a few corn tortillas and 1 Lrg flower tortilla. Well as soon as I walked in my house the owner called me apologizing telling me the young lady had forgotten our flower tortilla. He was genuine and said he was going to refund one of the pasole back to my debit card. Again great customer service. I thanked him for reaching out however I want to put my $$ into family run businesses not take $$ away. It was just 1 flour tortilla. I will recommend this family run restaurant to all %100 without reservation. Now the best part, the pasole was AMAZING. Best I have ever had, better then I make at home. Can't wait to put more of my $$ into this place while they put more delicious food into my belly. Bon apatite.

Yelp
We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of this place! Not the greatest neighborhood, but the restaurant itself was very clean and well kept. We sat on the patio and enjoyed misters and a talavera tabletop. I ordered the enchilada trio. The only enchilada I really liked among the 3 was the mole. The rest were ok. Rice and beans on the plate were flavorful and good. My husband got four tacos and enjoyed the carne asada and fish tacos best. Fish taco was very fresh and not breaded. Total bill was $34 which included a Victoria bottle beer. Wait staff were nice and attentive. Hidden gem, we will be back!

Caitlin H.

Yelp
Food is pretty good. The Al Pastor tacos are the best I have found in Phoenix. And they have the best Michelada's I've had outside of Mexico. Their employees are mostly friendly. There is a few items I think are over priced. Like if you order chips without the salsa you are still paying the same price as chips with the salsa. They have an arcade game for kids and a small area where you can purchase bracelets at the front register. There is also outdoor seating, although I have never seen anyone use it. Their bathrooms have always been super clean as well.

Aaron O.

Yelp
Reall solid spot! Never had Oaxacan food before and overall was impressed. The vibe and atmosphere aremt going to blow you away, but the food carries its weight and is high quality. The 3 enchiladas were excellent - the green sauce in particular stood out. The taco was also excellent, with a really tasty tortilla. Overall it was a solid spot!!

Yelp
Went here because we wanted to try something different. No option for fountain drinks. We were given chips with salsa. The chips were warm but stale. As my family continued to eat the chips, they started to taste bad. As I grab a chip and put it my mouth I look on the basket to see a dead small cockroach. I immediately spit out the chip in my mouth. We were all grossed out. The server was a nice lady but when we bought it to her attention, she didn't apologize nor offer anything else. She just took the basket away. We were hesitant to eat our food which was mediocre. Needless to say we will never go here again.

Yelp
Our AZ food stop. In trying to avoid burgers for as long as we could on our cross-country road trip, we opted for ethnic food as often as possible. This place really did not disappoint. Wonderful moles. We got the mole fiesta, which was the perfect sampler platter for us. Earthy, smooth flavors, perfectly washed down with the massive agua frescas. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical with $5 drinks but man did they live up to their price! We got the Guanabana and Guava and both were truly, truly delicious.
