Susanna MacManus, Longtime Owner of LA’s Original Taqueria Cielito Lindo, Dies at Age 82 | Eater LA

"A family-operated restaurant launched by Ana Natalia Guerrero (Aurora Guerrero’s daughter) on Olvera Street and at other locations, established as a sit-down complement to the sister taquería. It provides air-conditioned seating and a pastel-decor interior that diners often use when the sidewalk line becomes long; as one observer put it, when patrons said there was no place to sit they were directed to the restaurant “where they could enjoy their taquitos in air conditioning surrounded by an array of pastels.” Opened by a daughter of the family who helped build the culinary legacy begun by Aurora Guerrero, it remains part of the same multi-generational enterprise and a refuge for those seeking a more leisurely place to eat the signature taquito-and-salsa combination." - Bill Esparza

Sometimes packed for the midday feastings of lunch or late breakfast, Las Anitas is more accessible as the afternoon comes to close but, their hours means an early dinner. The food is as one may expect of anything tourist-centric yet there is no diminishing the taste of little Mexico that is Olvera Street. A full restaurant, Las Anitas seems to have partnered with Cielito Lindo, which is located across the way and is world renowned for their taquitos. Yes, those crispy munchies are good but pale in comparison to another stall two eateries further into Olvera Street. Regardless, Las Anitas has a very tender carne asada, skip the taquitos. chicken Enchiladas are also que bueno! Bonus for the cost conscientious are the daily happy hour specials such as reduced beer prices or a Kids Eat Free day midweek. Those fortunate to be free at three in the afternoon will usually find easy street parking with a short stroll and an inviting restaurant with ample available tables. Seldom is there any room left in the belly for more eating from other places of Olvera Street but that's quite alright. Nostalgia may hit hard if you've come to Olvera Street in your youth, why not let your taste buds experience the same? Edit: Spelling (Olvera Street) +Pics

07/26/25 - 1st time here in my 55 years living in LA. Cozy place, colorful, lots of tables. I just had a beer, but I'll be back.

Google
i ordered the 7 mares soup and got a huge bowl of rich goodness, beef burrito was good, beef taquitos in avocado salsa were nice and the porl chili verde was piquante and tasty. the tortilla chips are kept warm so they're extra crispy and delicious and the salsa is amazing. service is very friendly if i lived in DTLA it would definitely be a regular spot for me

Google
I'm floored by how amazing the vegan options were. Some of the tastiest tacos I've had in the area and some of the best mole that my husband has had. The decor was beautiful and the staff were kind. This will definitely a regular watering hole.

Google
So waitress was rude when we arrived. Well went for dinner I got the fajitas beef, chicken, shrimp. It wasnt fajitas rather Chinese version. Very disappointed. Fajitas should be cook in tomatoe sauce not soy sauce. My boyfriend got the olivera combo and wasn't up to par either. Enchilada was gross the sauce wasn't that of Enchilada not sure what it was. As for the taco was a ball of meat dry as hell. Tamale was too soggy over all food has become not authentic. Drinks were good Pepsi was very carbonated and the Jamaica good and sweet. I don't recommend this spot. I will not be returning.

On a recent family trip decided to check out something new, we had been meaning to visit plaza Olvera for a long time, we finally ended up there and during some shopping we stumbled upon this place, a wonderful hole in the wall if you will. Great service, delicious food and a great overall experience. I highly recommend.

Google
First time here. Very good food. Staff is very friendly and check on you often. We enjoyed the ambiance. Asada fries are so good and stand out with using seasoned waffle fries (I highly recommend getting double asada on the fries). I had the fish tacos and loved them. If you like the spice, they have a great chipotle ranch sauce that you can put on the fries or tacos. I highly recommend this spot. I will definitely be back.

Google
The food is not tasty, isn't mex food.they didn't cook well, some dishes are old.taste bad. We visited this place a couple times , and we enjoyed the food and the ambiance. But this time , Not. this is our last time here. They charge for plates that you don't have. Just be careful when you order some food here. OverPrices on all, dishes.

Yelp
Tried this out over lunch on a Tuesday. It was very quiet inside. Ambiance was very on point for Mexican culture- very colorful with Spanish music that reminded me of Coco. Service was decent. I got the Pueblo Combo ($18) which had rice, beans, cheese enchillada, and crispy beef taco. Quite filling and savory. They gave tortilla chips and salsa for free too.

Yelp
My friend and I went on an adventure using the Metro and Metrolink system and ended up in DTLA. The very first sitdown restaurant we saw was Las Anitas at the entrance along Cesar E Chavez and Alameda. It gave cueva vibes with the low cieling and intimate indoor area. He ordered the Chile Verde and I had Costillas de Puerco and Nopales. The food hits. It was my first time having an authentic uncommon Mexican meal and I'm a fan. Since it's location is in the heart of DTLA, it is a bit pricey, but it's part of the Olvera St experience.

Kathy B.

Yelp
It was decorated like an authentic Mexican restaurant and the waitress was nice. However the food was such a disappointment. I thought I was playing it safe by ordering taquitos plate. The description said taquitos with guacamole sauce. However the taquitos were smothered in what seemed to be salsa verde. The chips were not burned but had a burnt taste and so did the taquitos. I asked for double rice instead of beans. Instead of double rice I was served a salad (no dressing). We waited for the waitress to return she never did so we went up to the register and waited. She was sitting with someone on her phone until her friend told her we were waiting. Won't be returning there

Yelp
Let's start with the positives: the customer service was amazing, and the restaurant was very clean and refreshing. The air conditioning was also great. The only issue I had was with the food. I ordered crunchy chicken tacos, which came with beans, rice, and a salad. The price wasn't too bad at $24, including a soda. The chicken in the tacos tasted like it had been boiled in water without any seasoning. The rice had zero flavor and might as well have been plain white rice. It would be perfect if you have no taste buds or if you only eat for the nutritional value.

Yelp
My family and I went to El Paseo Inn Restaurant first but the server was very rude once we sit down. We stepped out immediately. Then we saw Las Anitas and the customer service was totally different. Our server Ricardo O was very professional, polite and friendly. The customer service was outstanding here. The food was good. I highly recommend this place when you visit Olvera Street.

Yelp
Decent looking restaurant that is clean and cute inside. Food was not good though. Guacamole and chips to start were very bland. It tasted almost like there wasn't any salt added. I ordered the crisp beef tacos (shredded beef) and it was the worst crispy taco I've ever had. The beef was so incredibly dry and bland that even adding salsa on top couldn't save it. Beans and rice were okay but I don't expect the restaurant to mess that up. My group also tried the enchiladas and taquitos, which were also disappointing. They came out very bland and all soooo dry. Safe to say I do not plan on returning.

Yelp
Food was so disappointing, waste of money. Service was rushed. The lady was rude with attitude. I thought the ambience was going to be cute bc it's underground but it's fine.

Yelp
I'm not an expert on pozole, but I was super happy with my takeout order for lunch from this place! $10 for a small pozole that ended up being two meals for myself is a great deal! They add a bag of tortilla chips too, so if you call and they ask if you want flour or corn tortillas, I guess they're taking about chips.

Yelp
Nunca volveria. Domingo 27th hora 3:00pm .
google avatar

Nicole D.

Yelp
We ordered a small pozole and a soft taco plate and our total was around $36. It was quick and efficient service which I appreciated and our host checked our on multiple times. The pozole was amazing and it's hard to come by in the west side so I loved it, but seeing how someone previously mentioned some of the soups are not made fresh does make me a little wary.

Yelp
The food, decor, and service were great. Ricardo was very nice. We enjoyed the meal, the drinks, and the whole experience.

Yelp
Food was yummy and good service! We came in to get out of the heat and glad we did. The michis are fantastic

Yelp
I was here for Dia de Los muertos. Very busy day. Las Anitas had the shortest line. So why not. The service was excellent. It's really cool looking inside. Felt like I was someplace else. The food was ok. I really wanted a margarita but they only serve the wine kind. No thnx. I was glad they were open and had Dia De Los Muertos experience, but I don't think I would go back. Not till they could serve me a real margarita
google avatar

Yelp
They have a vegan menu! They were so nice, accommodating! And the servers were so nice! I've never had such great service at another place. Food is decently priced and so good! Highly recommend them! Such a cute place! And free chips for the table!
google avatar

Yelp
Fast, attentive service. The food was solid. The avocado salsa was great with the chicken taquitos. Good choice if you're visiting Olvera Street and want to get something to eat right there.

Yelp
Stopped in to this quaint spot located on Olvera St. We were not looking for food but instead wanted an authentic michelada. The restaurant is underground, and decorated in traditional Mexican fare. We were greeted at the door as there was a nice woman ushering passersby's into the restaurant. The chips and salsa were decent and were provided to us free of charge as soon as we were seated. The michelada was tasty enough, I've definitely had better but prices were reasonable and the restaurant is a cool place to take a break. I wouldn't come back for a michelada and unfortunately didn't try the food.

Yelp
My family and I were at Our Lady Queen of Angels Church nearby for a baptism on a Sunday morning. After the services, we strolled down Olvera Street looking for a place to have breakfast. We came upon Las Anitas and decided to give it a try. The ambiance seemed inviting and the gentleman at the entrance welcomed us in and led us to our table in the back. I ordered the Olvera special which had a tamal, a cheese enchilada, and a beef taco. My wife ordered the chilaquiles, while my kids ordered kid specials off the kid's menu. The service was prompt and the food tased good. The sauce they douse all over the tamal and enchilada is a bit acidic for my taste buds but it was tolerable. As much as I would like to say that our visit was a positive experience, sadly I can't. As we were eating and about to wind down, a couple of roaches came out from behind the seat I was at and scurried over to the frame on the wall. I quickly tell my wife we need to get out of there when she sees the roaches scurrying up the wall, she couldn't help but let out a small shriek of horror. We didn't want to make a scene so we quickly made our wait to the front and I informed the server and asked for the check. To my surprise when I told the server that there were roaches by our table, she replied, "How?...well, I didn't see them." And she walked away supposedly to investigate. I opted to pay the bill and leave. This is one place I definitely will not be retuning to. If there are roaches on the seats; they're everywhere else in there. Stay away!

Yelp
This is my favorite part of Los Angeles Olvera Street, completely forgot our waiter's name I want to think it's Jose. They got us in quickly even though there was a group of 14 people of head of us! It's a small spot, the food was great, and nicely priced, I had a nice margarita. I actually thought Chile Riano, that hot chili I'm not sure I'm spelling it right, was top notch.

Yelp
We were walking around Placita Olvera, and hadn't had breakfast yet. This place looked quaint and cozy, so we stopped by....Big mistake.... Short and sweet, I LOVE MENUDO!!! And I can tell when its bad...or not cooked correctly, and as you can see in the picture, it was disgusting....I asked the waitress if the Menudo was fresh, and she said "no, it was made yesterday, and pre-heated today." All bad... I returned it and got some Chilaquiles instead...$90 lesson learned...Won't come here ever again...

Kim S.

Yelp
save your money... food was not good. Three people out of the 7 of us ended up sending their lunch back. The server didn't ask or care. Do not order the white wine... YUCK! We had to ask for additional service as no one ever came back to check on us. We were disappointed.

Amit K.

Yelp
I love this place! Come here with coworkers for lunch sometimes and the food's consistent and really good. The service is always warm and friendly, and they do a great job accommodating by gluten and dairy restrictions. Try the fish!

Lucy G.

Yelp
I love this place. The food is always amazing and fresh. The service is always kind and feels like a family. Cute spot hidden in olvera st right on the corner.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service, absolutely delicious food. My mother ordered the Pescado a la veracruzana and loved it so much. I got the olvera and was absolutely satisfied :)
google avatar

Jayson C.

Yelp
Food was great and service was ok. After the order was placed they came at the end to bring the bill. The waiters and waitresses could have come by to check in on us while eating as we had our drinks needing refills for about 10-15 minutes. Flan was good at the end
google avatar

Jacquelyn C.

Yelp
Worse service and food!!! I would NEVER come here again. I can't remember the last time i had service this bad. She never checked on us and was rude from the time we asked if we could get a table. Never checked if our food was ok or offered refills. We didn't even eat our food we paid $60 for my daughter to have a few bites of beans and rice. DONT EAT HERE!!!

Matthew P.

Yelp
shit tasted like ass and they took forever to get my tortillas out, I would not recommend this place to anyone else especially cause most of their food is harldy seasoned and has no flavor to it. I hated eating here
google avatar

Aida C.

Yelp
We had many choices but wanted to try this restaurant because of its festive design and beautiful decor. The food was about a seven. I had the combination plate of a Chile replenish, an enchilada and a taco. I asked for a rolled taco and they did give me one which was super great! Our waitress was very efficient and welcoming. It was a bit pricy for Mexican food but they do have to pay rent for the venue. Very cute Mexican place I would go back to if in the neighborhood to just order the chili relleno. The chips and salsa were really good and authentic but don't get too full on those. Good sized portions.

Yelp
I came in on a rainy day during the holidays and was seated right away I tried a pomegranate margarita and the Asada fries because they come highly recommended. I enjoyed the margarita with the agave wine , very refreshing. When my asada fries came I couldn't believe it , they're huge ! The fries are very good . They're perfectly seasoned and crispy , perfect waffle fries . The toppings were generous, you can easily share these . My only minor issue is the asada , it didn't have much favor. Which is a real shame because I could see why these fries had won awards before . This restaurant is just across the street from Union Station . This is an ideal place to come if you have a bit of a wait during travel .

Yelp
Avoid this restaurant at all costs. Even if it is the only restaurant open and you are starving! We went here today during a family trip to Olivera street. BIG MISTAKE. How can a Mexican restaurant in this area be so bad. I do not understand how you can mess up the most basic and common Mexican dishes. I had cheese enchiladas. They were cold in the center and the cheese wasn't even melted. The beans and rice were so bland and tasteless I was wondering if I lost my sense of taste. I wish I was joking. My daughter ordered the tamales and didn't even eat them and didn't want to take them to go! They were so bad. My husband got a shredded beef taco. He's not even picky and didn't like it. You're best bet is to keep walking around Olivera and find a decent Mexican restaurant. This place sucks!

Yelp
Inviting garden level restaurant with festive colors. In the historic Olvera Street, downtown....across from the main post office, not far from Union Station with street parking a couple blocks south near the French dip sandwich institution known as Phllippes. Vegetarian options, so happy about Vegetarian Mexican food...was a big draw for us. So down the stairs into the below street level restaurant.... atmosphere albeit dark is festive, with multi-pastel-colored chairs...both my friend and I were first timers here... We were seated right away...chips and salsa for free....ordered within 15 minutes: PIBLAN (pumpkin sauce) with soy "meat"...came with whole beans and Spanish rice. The dish was nice...the soy meat was like hamburger that you'd find in tacos...the sauce was thick like mole...it had a mild kick and a smoky quality to the flavor...you get three corn tortillas on the side. I could have had this as an enchilada, I think it would have been cheaper that say. My dish was about $14. Pricey, but nice. CRUNCHY BEEF TACOA. Standard rice and refried beans. My friend said it was fine. Mine was fine. Our food came within another 10 minutes...which was just fine. Seamless meal. OVERALL: Great to find soyrizo and soy meat substitute. Not sure about the cheese, but there was none on the PIBLAN. So thanks for offering the options. It was fine. A little pricey. Not horrible. Not amazing. But solid place to eat...and I'm a fan because they served vegan/vegetarian options.

Yelp
The food is lacking flavor unfortunately. I ordered the menudo and it was more oil than sopa and it doesn't even come with hominy. The taquitos are made with canned sauce and weren't hot. However, the best part of this restaurant is the cafe de olla. That's where it gets the 2 stars from me.
google avatar

Ms J.

Yelp
Made a stop here after a court date. Many restaurants were closed due to pandemic but luckily this one was open for business. Food was good, will definitely stop again if ever down here.
google avatar

Jenny F.

Yelp
Great service, food was good :) the place is so cute! Located right off the street, it's like a little basement. We also got in pretty fast considering the line.
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
We stopped here before my friends went to a dodger game. They normally don't open as early as they did for that day, but we had a great time. They were attentive. They came bustling out w salsa, chips and drinks for the table. I split taquitos and it came w mole sauce and avocado cream sauce. I added a side of rice to go with it. I had a great time, but there wasn't anything stand out about the food that I got so just one less st

Yelp
Came with friends while on break in the area. Mojarra Dorada / Whole Fried Tilapia Fish with Horchata 5/5!

Yelp
This place is a gem for Vegetarian eaters if you're hungry and on Olivera Street in DTLA. With many options to choose from on the menu, this place is delicious. Stopped in for a quick bite to eat on a Saturday before catching a train to head back home, we were quite impressed. The size of the dining area is rather small due to the history behind this place, yet it's a comfortable environment to eat in. The walls are filled with bright color and the accent pieces give it a nice touch. Prices are reasonable here. I'd say this is a great lunch spot.
google avatar

Staci G.

Yelp
What an amazing little spot on olvera street. the service is tops, the food is delicious & the margaritas are def worth coming back for!!
google avatar

Samantha H.

Yelp
Service was terrible - saw our waitress when she came to take our order, and then at the end of our meal to bring the bill. We tried to flag her down for a water refill but she didn't return until after we finished eating. The happy hour margaritas were not good. We tried strawberry and Pina colada, both were gross (had a funny flavor) and also you could not taste any tequila in it. I ordered carne asada fries, which were good but my party ordered Mexican dishes and they were just average. How can you serve average Mexican food on Olvera street?? Last but not least, we sat at a table (half booth) that was in the corner of the room where the ceilings were low and slanted, so you had to watch your head when you got up.

Carmen V.

Yelp
We did not like the food, had no taste and they also forgot to serve my coffee. I finished eating and my coffee never came.

Veronica A.

Yelp
Absolutely coming here again! The food, the service the atmosphere was great. My girlfriends and me enjoyed every bite. This will be a spot to return to whenever in LA.
google avatar

Marisela R.

Yelp
Over priced for horrible food. Plus the wait is long. Customer service lacks tremendously. Definitely do not recommend this place.
google avatar

Seth C.

Yelp
I was in the area on a business trip and decided to come here for lunch. This place definitely feels authentic, has a nice welcoming vibe. I arrived right before the place got packed so I was sat at the bar in the back with only 3 chairs. I got chips with salsa, and ordered chilaquiles rojo with beans rice, and 2 sunny-side eggs. The eggs seemed a bit runny, the chilaquiles had no flavor whatsoever, and once the place got packed I no longer saw a waiter/waitress. When I was finished I had to get up and go stand in line to get my bill and pay. Keep in mind that I wasn't the only one in line, seems they can't handle that kind of volume yet. If I was in the area, I'd give this place another chance. But just one more.
google avatar

Nubia O.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot when I'm around the area. I don't only like the food, decor, service and ambiance which are amazing; but the music they play! Old school romantic rancheras. At times there's a Trio going around tables if you want a serenade while eating there lol. What I really enjoy here are their margarita on the rocks, the mango one is my fave. Also their carne asada and garlic shrimp plates and the carne asada fries. Most of their plates come with rice (great Mexican style one), refried beans, a side of small salad or grilled veggies and tortillas (you choose from corn and flour). Their chips and salsa are always on point and their aguas frescas taste really fruity unlike other places around the area. Everyone seems to be happy and amiable when I'm there. Bathroom is clean and doesn't stink lol. Place is really small but very inviting. I never had dessert before 'cause I'm usually stuffed when I'm done; but I recently had their capirotada which is a dessert they make mostly for Lent. It was really good it reminded me of bread pudding with melted cheese, fruits and walnuts. You must try! I've had it differently but this one style was really good. If you're around the area give Las Anitas a try. You won't regret it.

Yelp
I was serving as jury in downtown court and I always wanted go and check out Olvera street. I parked in south side and walked towards Olvera street and first restaurant I faced was La Anita's so I walked in. You have to go down steps basically the restaurant is in basement. I liked the painting and decor. My waiter brought me complimentary chips and salsa and very generous with refills but I wish their salsa was fresh. I ordered Shrimp Fajitas with red and green peppers and rise and beans which was okay. Honestly food was okay.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
When we first walked in we were instantly greeted by this sweet Senorita. We were told we could sit anywhere we wanted. The inside looked like you were in an under ground cave except it was bright and so colorful!! I love it!! The server was fantastic. He was sweet and so nice. The food came out so fast and it felt like I was at home and my abuelita made me breakfast on Sunday. If you haven't been here I highly recommend it!! I'll never have Chilaquiles anywhere else. Gran trabajo. Este es uno de los mejores restaurantes de Los Ángeles..

Yelp
My family and I were exploring this area having done very little research on closing times, this was the only restaurant open on the Olvera Street strip on Thursday evening at 730, I have never tried it but anything on Olvera street is damn good. Amazing time. Everything was delicioso and the carne asada was SO FREAKING JUICY AND GOOD!!! Service was quite good as well.

Thomas F.

Yelp
Wow, what a disappointment. For a Mexican place on Olvera street to be so basic, and plain. Leaves the food boring and tasteless. Menu is simple and not much for anything exciting or unique. Don't waste your time.

Terry A.

Yelp
I'm a local so I've been eating at Olvera Street since I was a kid. I've eaten at Las Anitas before and always enjoyed it before. Not so yesterday. First I noticed the prices have gone way up, but I always liked the food so I decided to eat there anyway. I ordered the Los Angeles plate, which is a cheese enchilada, a chile rellenos and a taco. I've had it before. The cheese enchilada had a mixture in it, that I assumed with some kind of chicken with rice because it did not seem to be like cheese. It was not melted at all. I know some Mexican restaurants use cheeses that don't melt, like Oaxacan establishments. This is not one of those places, there was cheese melted on top of the enchilada and on the beans. So they definitely use cheese that melts. When I asked the waitress about it because I just thought she would just bring me a cheese enchiladas like I ordered, she told me it was cheese. Next thing I noticed was my chicken taco (I specifically asked for a chicken taco instead of a beef taco ) had ground beef in it instead of chicken. At this point I did not want to say anything to the waitress because she had not been very accommodating when I mentioned the enchilada. When I got the bill, they charge us $2.50 for a Pepsi, and $5.00 for a diet Pepsi. The bill was $54 before tip for food that was really not that good. Olvera Street is filled with places where you can have a wonderful meal for under $40. I will not be coming back here again.

Yelp
Las Anitas is at the end of the block on Olvera Street. It is underground, so you will walk down some stairs. The inside is super cute and festive looking. it is all very colorful. The food is traditional Mexican food and the menu has a lot to offer. We enjoy the tacos and the enchiladas. The rice is sometimes dry, and that is why I have rated with a 4 and not a 5. You will love the service, they are super friendly to kids. The prices are reasonable and the food hot and fresh. Have a great time.
