13 Houston Restaurants Serving Stellar Central and South American Cuisine | Eater Houston

"Pollo a la brasa is a style of cooking chicken with origins in Lima, Peru. Behind the counter at Las Brasas, you’ll see an 800 degree oven, fueled with charcoal, slowly browning more than 15 plump chickens simultaneously by rotating them on metal spits over open flames. The chicken is served in quarters, halves, or whole, with your choice of sides, including yucca, fried plantains, and more. If you’re wanting to branch out from chicken, try the tallarin verde (Peruvian pesto pasta), or the Lomo Saltado, stir-fried beef with cilantro rice and French fries. Yes, French fries are hugely popular in Latin America." - Christina Autry

Google
The food was great!! Got chicken, potatoes, chaufa rice and plantains. The portions were big; flavor was even bigger. Everything was seasoned to perfection and I was able to split this into 2 meals. This was my first time here and it will not be my last! I can't wait to see what I'll be getting next.

Google
The potatoes, chicken, beans, and salsas are fantastic! I love that the salsas are labeled by spice level but they all have just the right amount of heat, in my opinion. I wasn't a big fan of the plain white rice but if you mix everything together it's great.

yarely rojas

Google
The portions are big. The meat is good and well seasoned. We ordered our meat to be cooked on the well-done side. They cooked it medium, and a big portion of the steak was fat. The noodles were a little salty. The atmosphere was very calm.

Google
Im sorry guys but this place is not good! I usually go to cowboy chicken on Hwy 6 but they’re closed mondays so I came here to satisfy my cravings and this place does not compare what so ever. They’re more expensive than my usual spot but not even worth it. The flavor is not there. I ordered the tallarin verde plate and it didn’t even look remotely close to the advertise picture. I had to add their salsa to it and that was super watery too. I will definitely stick to my usual place.

Google
I loooove las brasas Their chicken is my favorite and that green sauce is too good just wish they’d give a bigger portion of it 😭 Their customer service is top notch always so nice and welcoming !! Highly recommend this place!

Yalda Ahmadi

Google
Really good food! We usually get the family meal whole chicken with sides. It’s great. I don’t believe they have Yucca anymore. Their sauces are really good too. I don’t like beans but theirs with the rice is delish. I recently tried the fried rice with chicken and I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of meat in it. I’m a little confused about the cash vs credit price. I wish that was more clear but I never have enough time to ask the price difference or how it’s calculated.

Google
Las Brasas Charcoal Chicken offers a delightful culinary experience with its unique, smoky-flavored chicken. The beans and rice complement the meal perfectly. While the flavors shine, the customer service is average. The authentic taste makes it worth a visit for chicken lovers seeking something special.

Lauren Smith

Google
Their staff knows how to advice their customers to get the best experience! And especially if you order the family meal, you get a huge portion of food for what you pay! We were so excited to find out about them! Plus it was our first time to try the Peruvian soda.

Yelp
I was craving rotisserie chicken and saw this place that's close to my house so decided to give them a try. Not sure who all is back there cutting the chicken but The lady that served me, not sure if she was PMs but she definitely didn't want to be back there. Her services was terrible. 1 - these guys don't believe in A/C - it's hot in there 2 - I ordered half chicken with fried yucca and they didn't have any - I had to settle with French fries which it was tasteless 3 - the half chicken I ordered which is breast/wing/thigh and leg was the size of the palm of my hand.. I'm average 5'6 so both pieces were tiny 4 - I just wanted water to drink which they only serve bottled drink and they didn't even have water 5 - their green salsa was the highlight of the entire restaurant. Little runny but had great taste. If I go back, I would just order the green salsa and purchase my chicken but H‑E‑B or krogers

Yelp
Hello! I am updating my review since the last time I came. My last review was from 2019, I used to work in the area and would be a frequent customer for lunch. It was always delicious and the portion sizes were awesome. The salad was always fresh, inside was clean and organized. Usually the service was like chipotle where you order and they take the chicken out right in front of you and give you your sides. Fast forward to 2025--- I came a few times but the last time I came was not the best experience. Now when you order- they pack your food up for you and don't show you the food in front of you. Which is fine but man the portions are smaller now, and the sides are not as fresh. We got the Caesar salad and it tasted so old and the lettuce was all wilted. I had to throw it away. As for the sauces they used to give, they gave us 2 sauces and they were both watered down. I feel like the quality definitely went down here which makes me sad.
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
I came here to try the food through the App TooGoodToGo where you can get food at a discount. I go inside and tell them how many box I ordered through TooGoodToGo and they start packing the food for me. It is usually an order of the chicken, some rice, beans, and plantain. I would order a drink from them if they have it. It's a nice fast casual restaurant, it's really clean feel and the temperature is good not too cold inside. This place also serve halal food here.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Chicken was okay, the food was pretty much sides the half, whole or quarter order of chicken. The flavor from the chicken was decent but not too sure I would drive that distance from downtown area again. The staff seemed busy with several Togo orders so standing in line waiting a while to have my order placed as they were packing and grabbing more food from the line was a slow down
google avatar

Brianna M.

Yelp
I love this place the food is so good. I order take or don't good to go which is a great community builder in itself. The chicken is always so juicy and I love the plantains. They don't typically give plantains for the too good to go but I don't complain. Just get my large plantain and enjoy my day. The owner is very hands on and even gave me a credit when they had a catering job and I had already paid. Have friends come from across town to get the wraps and the grilled beef tender as well. The vibes are very family friendly.

Yelp
bruhhhh, I have eaten this on meal prep for the last two weeks. I'll order a family style meal that comes with two whole chickens (they cut it up for you), and 4 sides. Keep in mind, Yucca fries run out fast, potatoes are the number one seller. When you order, they often forget one item. If you are door dashing or ordering online, keep in mind when they run out, you will need to substitute something. You aren't the only one that wants to order here, and they know it. They will call you, and you better pick up! or else your DoorDash driver will sub it for whatever they want. They missed something out of my order like 3x/ now, but im still coming back because that chicken is smacking!!!! The plantains, broooo heavenly! Potatoes - highly recommend, and make sure you get some sauces on the side too!! I like the beans, I think it's flavorful for sure. Am I coming back? Hell yeaaaaaa I am! like next week!
google avatar

Krystin S.

Yelp
Food is delicious especially the chicken, potatoes, and the plantains!! The service is good and they take great care of us. Highly recommend
google avatar

Catrina M.

Yelp
The chicken, beans, and rice were all flavorless. So I supplemented the flavor with their 3 sauces which were unlimited since I dined in. I couldn't finish my food, so I asked for a Togo container and togo 2 oz sauce containers. After I spent $25 plus a tip on my entree (for 1), they had the nerve to try to charge me for the to-go sauces containers at the end since I couldn't finish my food there. Something about that irritated my very understanding of the fundamentals of customer service or courtesy. So I gave them the sauces and my left over to go plate to throw all of it away! I will never revisit this place again.
google avatar

Yelp
I had a delicious meal here, enjoying a quarter chicken with fried rice, steamed broccoli/carrots, and plantains. The chicken itself was incredibly flavorful, and I loved the sauce bar they had on the side. The plantains were also a sweet (literally and figuratively) way to end the meal. As others have mentioned, this place is Chipotle-esque cafeteria style, so there is minimal wait time. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for some delicious Peruvian chicken in the area, and I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Fabian R.

Yelp
Great option for me to switch things up a little on a Thursday. Stopped in around 5 and the place was empty and the staff was welcoming. The place is very spacious and well lite. It's cafeteria style so there's no wait to get your food. I got the 1/4 chicken, rice, veggies and fries. Overall the food was great. I would recommend to anyone for sure.

Freddy C.

Yelp
Terrible experience. I ordered a ribeye--no ribeye, no rocoto, no Inca Kola. Got cold, flavorless chopped meat and rice. No traditional Peruvian sauces. Staff was rude and careless. I gave them the benefit of the doubt to support a small business, but this place has gone downhill. Sad to see how they've neglected both the customers and the restaurant. Won't be back.

Yelp
The chicken fried rice is good. The chicken is well seasoned and very well cooked. The rice is bland. Maybe because there zero sauce to cover it. The location is wonderful and conveniently off westheimer. The decor do the restaurant is nice. Not too much seating but it's enough. I am very disappointed in the tiny sauce cup they gave for a family size plate. It did nothing but make you upset that the rest of the plate was dry. Lol it's like giving one ketchup packet for a basket of fries. I want to support this place so bad but this first impression was unfortunate. Maybe next time I'll get the best experience because i can tell the flavor is there! The sauce is phenomenal btw. Just make sure to get multiple cups.
google avatar

Evelyn L.

Yelp
The first time I tried this place was in 2016 and I remember I wasn't a fan of how dry the chicken was. Today, I decided to give it another try and I'm really glad I did. I ordered the rotisserie chicken with rice & black beans and I really liked it. I wish I would've tried the lomo saltado wrap. The service was nice so I would definitely come back to try different things!

Julius W.

Yelp
Very disappointed in "TooGoodtoGo" program. Ordered food from app with the thinking I would get a Surprise bag filled with delicious food as advertised for only me and my wife . Got there around 2pm on Friday and displayed a print of the paid order but, the waitress insisted she see it on my phone. Ok after I guess i proved to her it was legit, she gave me one piece of chicken, one scoop of rice and a scoop of potatoes and handed me the plate with a bad attitude. I walked away thinking wow, Sat in my truck for minute what did I do to deserve this service. So this surprise bag of food is a scam and I will not be back, will tell other to stay away from this location.

Yelp
Honestly, I'm happy they decided to offer halal food to the Houston community, because before them my options for Peruvian food were either my own home or bribing a friend's grandma. Both have their pros and cons, but neither are as easy as being able to order a Lomo Saltado burrito off of UberEats. If you haven't had Peruvian food before, don't read this review and just try it. I always like to talk about service but having only tried them through delivery apps I can't say much other than our orders have been correct and the food is ready when the driver arrives. They have a fairly straightforward menu, and our reigning favorite is their Lomo Saltado burrito which is the best combination of savory meat, different textures, tangy sauce and pure convenience. If it was reasonable I would pick one of these up for lunch every day. Their family platter is the crowd favorite and offers delicious sauces, sides and their flagship roast chicken. It's a great introduction to the cuisine although I find the portion to be a little lacking for the price. If you've reached this point I can only assume you're 1 of 3 people: You've already had Peruvian food before, you haven't but wanted to see what I had to say or you're just a rebel. Either way, go check them out and support a small business!

Yelp
The food is . We got the family meal whole chicken with fried plantains, fried rice, steamed vegetables, and French fries. So good . Iykyk.

Rehan M.

Yelp
2 star because they gave decent service. Two issues I had with this place. The first one was where they had a promotion that they should have applied but never did. Being in a hurry, I did not check my receipt. The second issue was that I was charged a few dollars over what my receipt showed. Take a look at the receipt. The charge I received on my card was $30.93 (Yelp is not letting me upload it for some reason). It was a take out, so there was no tip. Although the difference was not big, seems unethical to me that a business would do such a thing.

Yelp
I was looking for catering for my sons first bday and came across Las Brasa on Facebook. I contacted the owner Jorge he and he was very nice from the beggining. He actually invited us to his restaurant for a tasting before we booked any catering. When we arrived He was so helpful and he let us try everything he offers for catering, I was more than generous. He is very passionate about his food and you can tell because of how good it is. I can not stress to you how good his food was! Needless to say we went with him for our catering needs and his pricing is very very reasonable especially in these days of high prices. He had everything delivered on time and my family could not stop talking about the food. Everyone asked where we had catered the food from. Jorge really seems like an owner who cares about his customers and food. Visit las brasas and I guarantee you won't be disappointed

Yelp
Challenge to find CHICKEN. that's my order in today 02/25. It's named chicken fried rice. So does anybody could find any piece of chicken in my order?
google avatar

Monica W.

Yelp
Decent prices, chicken was grilled and tasty. Rice and beans was a hefty portion. Will have to try the other dishes soon.
google avatar

Halle B.

Yelp
It's just ok. The food is over priced & they are stingy with the amount they give for the price you pay. I guess they're charging so much because of the location I'm not really sure but it's not worth the price. Chicken is good but not much flavor. Beans have no flavor and rice is dry. Plantains taste old not fresh. They need to do better at making the food with love not just warming it up and overcharging for a plate. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone until they start serving better quality food and have better time management. It's always a long wait to order or get something to go they're always busy and don't usually stop to service the customer in a timely manner. When ordering they're doing 2 other things at once it's very annoying if you're just trying to grab food and go! I've been here 3 times and it's been the exact same experience. 3 strikes and they're OUT! Restaurant is usually clean for the most part. I'd never dine in though because I can only image how slow the service would be. They really need to do better.
google avatar

Jackie L.

Yelp
The chicken was delicious! The sauces were awesome! The sides were average. The employees here were super friendly and professional. Will I come back? Yes, the chicken is so worth it!
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
Great food and quick service! The ambiance is very Latin American which I love! The chicken smelled delicious from the moment you open the door and the meal was wonderful.
google avatar

Katherine A.

Yelp
Excellent service and looks fresh! First time here and the people are really nice . There is lot of options and the food is halal.

Ed M.

Yelp
Chicken was tender and delicious. Server were friendly and attentive. Restaurant were generally clean. Will go back again.
google avatar

Goldie O.

Yelp
I came to this restaurant during an Uber eats delivery and it smelled amazing so I decided to order it on uber eats myself. I ordered the dark chicken which came with a leg and a thigh and two sides. My sides were plantains and chicken fried rice. I must say everything is very well seasoned and tasted pretty good! There was also two different sauces that were in my plate and green-ish one and an orange-ish one. I loveddd the green sauce. It tasted like a sweet ranch or something (idk that's just how I recall it). My only complaint was the rice did seem a bit dry like it may have been old rice but because it was well seasoned I let them make it.
google avatar

Maria Aimen J.

Yelp
I have had this place bookmarked and wanted to try it for quite a while now, and my husband was finally on that side of town so we decided to pick up! The fact that they make a lot of chicken at one time is good because there is not a long wait time to pick up the food. The spices on the chicken were great and it was perfectly moist and tender. I did not like the fries I had chose at someone of my sides, they were the thick cut fries and there was nothing special to them at all. I would have liked if they would have some spices added to them or even a special dipping sauce would be nice but they were nothing special. I did like the rice that came with the chicken Because it was great, and the cilantro rice was just fine too. I would like to pick up again because I think it's great that I was able to get a whole halal chicken that was already cooked, but I will probably not be driving down here just just for this place. I am still getting 5 stars because The chicken was that good even though the sides weren't. That should tell you how good the chicken was. I will say that I do appreciate that the service was good and the person over the phone was willing to go through the sides with me and help me come to the decision of what to order. A little customer service goes a long way and these guys did it right.
google avatar

Danny R.

Yelp
Service was terrible, and the place was empty. Over priced for some dry chicken. Ambiance is dark and dingy.
google avatar

Sophia C.

Yelp
Great food, good portions for the price! Apart from the chicken, I loved the fried yuca & sweet plantain. I didn't catch the name of the woman who took my order but she was so sweet, and the restaurant was clean with a really laid back vibe.

Maria R.

Yelp
We just ate here this afternoon, and what a great experience. The food was yummy and the service was stellar! Super nice and accommodating staff, and Lydia especially was awesome! Highly recommend for the good food and welcoming vibe!

Ggr8prs S.

Yelp
Ordered the food from the Too Good To-Good app. I cannot say I enjoyed the chicken. I thought it was dry and not too flavorful. The rice, beans, and potatoes were the best part of the meal. My wife and I enjoy the BBQ chicken I make from HEB so much better. The portion size was a bit less than what I was expecting especially after reading what $18.00 was supposed to be. It was half a chicken, some rice, beans, and a few potatoes. I had been wanting to try them for awhile and now that I did, I will not want to go back. The app allowed me to try them, so I did. They accomplished what they sought out to do which makes the Too Good To Go app work for them.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Visiting from out of town and was looking for some lunch and stumbled upon this little shop. You know if a restaurant specializes in something specific and has a ton of good reviews on Yelp, I gotta try it. I got the 1/4 dark meat (comes with 1 leg and 1 thigh) with the chicken fried rice and steamed (boiled?) vegetables as my 2 sides. The chicken was so tender and juicy, and fell right off the bone, and the chicken fried rice was so superb and delicious. The vegetables were a little soggy and mushy but, hey, I didn't come here for the vegetables so I didn't care. I would definitely recommend visiting this place!
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
Delicious food! Friendly staff! Definitely worth a try. We got the chicken and chaufa plate and the Lomo Saltado and they were both great. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Reginald H.

Yelp
As I mentioned in a previous review, if we tried them again I'd update my review. When a place is known for a specific dish you should definitely order it because omg the chicken here is absolutely delicious. Las Brasas actually sent basically a voucher and wow that was so appreciated so we immediately tried them again. We ordered the white meat chicken, which was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. The portion was very large imo and was more than enough food for the two of us. The plantains were so much better than before and the French fries were good too. I would totally recommend giving this place a try!
google avatar

Facundo Walter N.

Yelp
Unbelievable quantity of great food for an amazing price! The chicken was great, and each side were humongous! The service was great and the ambiance of the restaurant was very good. Again totally recommend this.
google avatar

Cherrish A.

Yelp
The chicken here is SO good! Love their green sauces as well! I also really appreciate that they participate in the Too Good To Go app to help cut down food waste!

Yelp

Yelp
I had a pretty bad experience here, which is surprising as I had trusted all the positive reviews this place has. There are serious operation and communication problems. I walked in to order at the counter and was told to sit at a table (since I was planning to eat there). The time between sitting down and waiting for a waitress was unfortunately the difference between getting the food I wanted. I had started ordering a whole chicken at the counter and was upset to hear that they had sold it to the person who walked in after me (who placed a to-go order) as I was sitting/waiting. They also ran out of plantains and vegetables. Instead of getting the food I came for, I got horrible suggestions to get chicken legs and a salad. The salad had old lettuce that was going bad. The chicken legs were underwhelming. I was confused by the fried rice the dish includes. The sauces were one of the most disappointing parts -- one tastes like you're eating a red pepper, while the other tastes like you're eating a bush of cilantro. Very overpowering vs. complimenting to the chicken. Giving one star for the fruit juice they make, but that's really it. I'd also like to mention that the kitchen seems disconnected and toxic. We observed them throw a whole chicken away (after I was told they were sold out) and one worker calling another one "a**hole" for getting an order incorrect. There was a lot of yelling orders and corrections. I have buyers remorse and regret not walking out when I was told things were sold out... not sure I'd come back after such a disappointing experience.

Zenab C.

Yelp
Quality is no longer existent. The plantains are not fully cooked the chicken is mediocre. There are other place better than this place like Chicken Houz
google avatar

Chastity W.

Yelp
I ordered on grub hub, the cheapest grub hub I have ever done. Overall it was pretty good. Well seasoned chicken packed with flavor, the beans as well. The rice was just rice nothing special but tasted fine. I loved the plantains well cooked. The 2 sauces I think did lack in flavor but the food really didn't need it. So it was ok.
google avatar

Hue P.

Yelp
Ordered lomo saltado and was surprised to be asked how i wanted my meat cooked. So i asked for medium. The plate was brought out freshly prepared. I am not sure why the meat tasted so salty. Maybe because it was not poured on top of the fries like other lomo saltados. Regardless i would try the dish again. The chicha drink was very dessert like as in spices such as cinammon. I liked it. Once again forgot my check in offer smh

Dustin W.

Yelp
nice little restaurant, service was amazing. ordered here through the too good to go app. when i got there the guy at the counter said that they were closed to a private event, and when i said that i was here for a too good to go bag, he seemed kind of fluttered and told me to just hang out and see what he could do. he ended up giving me some fresh chicken that im assuming would have gone to waste. really nice guy and the chicken was AMAZING. will definitely be trying this place again when thier dining room is open so i can give it a good shot :)
google avatar

Holly H.

Yelp
Excellent service! Upon arriving I guess we looked confused because the guy asked if we'd ever been there. When we said no they offered us a sample of chicken and salsa and they were both amazing! I ordered the 1/4 plate of chicken with black beans and fried yuca. The green and red salsa are both the bomb!! I was seriously dipping everything in that stuff. This is going to be my new go to spot for chicken.
google avatar

Judy N.

Yelp
Please do yourself a favor and try the amazing charcoal chicken here! It's so good and flavorful. Excellent spot for lunch. I also love their blue corn juice!! Such delicious Peruvian food in a casual setting. Love love love this place; cannot recommend it enough!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
I ordered at the counter a 1/4 chicken (dark meat) meal with grilled veggies and black beans for the two sides for $10. After getting my drink from the self serve drink machine and getting a table my food came out in less than 5 minutes. Immediately, I notice how tiny the leg/thigh was. It looked more like an eighth of a chicken. I understand that these are free range chickens and therefore might be on the small side but my portion was disappointing. I mentioned this to the manager at the counter and he said the order was correct. I didn't want to complain so I went back to eat my meal. The chicken here is marinated for 24 hours and cooked with their own special mix of herbs and spices over a charcoal fire. My chicken was juicy and flavorful but just too small. As I was eating a server brought me another 1/4 dark meat portion and said that the manager evidently wanted me to have it thinking the original piece was too small. I appreciated this effort however the second portion was only slightly larger than the first so keep that in mind. The chicken portions here are on the small side. My two side dishes were however large. The black beans and mixed vegetables were both flavorful and tasty and I enjoyed both. I would return however I like my chicken pieces to be larger than this. For that reason only, I will give a 3.

Yelp
If you're craving Peruvian style rotisserie chicken, this place is one of the best! Counter service helps the speed of service here. The menu isn't extensive, but they do offer other options besides the chicken. Now, I haven't ventured into other menu items because that rotisserie chicken is where it's at, and I order it every time. We usually order the whole chicken with sides deal as it is enough to feed a family of four! The charred and juicy meat come off the bones easily, perfectly cooked. With the counter service and precooked sides, it's a very quick and hassle free process to have a delicious meal ready. I really love the fried plantains! The rest of the sides are honestly mediocre, but I'm here for the chicken anyway. Don't forget some delicious sauces at the condiment bar! They have a phone charging station at the tables. Kinda a fun touch. Definitely a keeper!

Yelp
Hot and fresh out the kitchen remix to rotisserie chicken! @labrasagrills serve up some delicious Peruvian charcoal grilled chicken! I got the half chicken with cilantro rice and fried plantains along with a passion fruit agua Fresca and had a delicious and affordable lunch! Super moist and tender with a delectable smoky aroma! Devoured my whole plate and was satisfyingly full! Can't wait to go back for more! Don't forget to follow for more food adventures!

Yelp
I discovered this place recently. I am a resident of College Station (a 1.5 hour drive away from Houston). So, whenever I go to Houston (usually like once in a month), I try to make the most of my visit and have unique food experiences. My list keeps on growing and this place bas been on it for weeks now. I got the 1/2 chicken all dark with arroz chaufa (fried rice) and fried plantains, both of which were $0.50 additions. The service was quick and the people at the restaurant were really friendly and accommodating. When I asked if the food could be made spicier, the owner personally went into the kitchen to get me 2 small containers full of a jalapeño salsa. The food was really good, especially the chicken. The skin was super flavorful and charred, and all of the meat had uniform flavor distribution too. The chaufa was good (not the best) and the plantains were amazing. The food was really filling and the price seemed reasonable. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
First all the customers service was spot on. The food was amazing the charcoal chicken was seasoned and cook perfect. They have two sauces to accompany it that taste so good, I myself like it without it. For sides we had a salad and there plantain which was so sweet but. I saw another customer had there fried rice. They also serve a steak that look so good. The setting In restaurant was good small but the way tables and chairs were it's very cozy. We definitely be back.
