The Best Restaurants in Aspen, Colorado | Eater Denver

"Find big Tex-Mex energy in the heart of downtown, courtesy of MML Hospitality (see also: Clark’s, Swedish Hill, Louis Swiss Bakery). Las Montañas celebrates all things cantina with arched doorways, colorful tile, and Southwestern charm. From sizzling tabletop fajitas and bubbling enchilada platters to Baja-style oysters and bright ceviches, everything on the menu plays well to the adventure-induced hearty appetite you’ll have in the mountains. The bar’s agave program is extensive, with stacked mezcal and tequila shelves for experimenting, and a “Maudie’s Famous Frozen Margarita” is mandatory." - Katie Shapiro

Las Montañas - Review - Aspen - The Infatuation

"Leave it to the Austinites behind Clark’s Oyster Bar to finally open a good Tex-Mex restaurant in the mountains. Ideal for a post-ski lunch or dinner feast, slide into a booth for some sizzling steak arrachera and achiote chicken fajitas with warm tortillas, garlic jalapeno butter, and queso fundido. If you’ve thoroughly thawed out, they have a machine cranking out frozen margaritas, but they also have more than 60 kinds of mezcal and tequila if you’re done shivering for the day. photo credit: Craig Turpin" - Katie Shapiro

The 21 Essential Aspen Restaurants

"In taking over the beloved Jimmy’s space, which bid adieu to Aspen after 24 years in 2021, MML Hospitality expanded its footprint at altitude with the opening of a new Tex-Mex concept in 2022. Arched doorframes, weathered wood, colorful tile, and rustic furniture make for a cozy backdrop to indulge in winter warm-ups, including tabletop fajitas, enchilada combo platters, Baja-style oysters, ceviches, and aguachiles. There’s an extensive mezcal and tequila list to mix-and-match." - Katie Shapiro

Google
The restaurant itself is nice and location is great since it’s in downtown Aspen. However, my order was wrong. It was our first time coming to this restaurant and we sat at the bar. Prices are a bit pricey, portions of the food are smaller for what you pay for. We initially ordered a beef fajita enchilada ($40) and received a tiny enchilada lol. When we received the bill, out bartender rang this up as a single enchilada ($11) instead of the entree. It wasn’t a big deal but wish there was more attention to detail… our bartender wasn’t attentive. We ended up going to another restaurant afterwards.

Hello, Mexican here 👋, This place is fantastic! I had the chilaquiles (added chicken), my wife had the chicken enchiladas with whole beans. Charles was an amazing waiter with an amazing attitude! They have a great selection of tequila and the bartenders are very friendly! We will definitely be back!

We ate lunch on the 4th of July at Las Montanas in Downtown Aspen and had a fabulous time. We showed up a little late to the reservation, but the front of the house was great at still accommodating us. The Mexican food here was spectacular. We all loved our meals, including the ice cream at the end. Needless to say, we will definitely be back. The whole experience was outstanding.

Google
Las Montanas offers excellent food, with the tacos being particularly amazing. The queso was delicious as well. However, the service could use some improvement, as our cocktails took a while to arrive and ended up coming after our food was served. Despite this, the overall dining experience was enjoyable, thanks to the flavorful dishes. Highly recommend Las Montanas for the fantastic food.

Google
Sitting outside on the patio we had views of the hillside filled with the Fall golden Aspens. Food was delicious! Great service, colorful interior, a lovely place to be. Bartender Tim created a non-alcohol margarita with jalapeño for me which was fabulous!

Google
The fajitas were fantastic and the atmosphere and service were excellent. I was skeptical because I live in Texas and out of state Mexican Food can be hit or miss but this was a definite hit.

Google
We arrived a few minutes before 5pm in the hopes of ordering a few tacos on happy hour. When a server came by at exactly 5:01 (she checked her phone), she informed us that we could not order anything from the happy hour menu (and blamed the chef). We protested that we had been there before 5pm, but were denied happy hour ordering. The service was terrible afterwards, and they repeatedly forgot to bring things that were ordered. Spend your money elsewhere.

Google
My husband and I loved the dining experience tremendously! The ambience was lovely, the chairs were relaxing, and the ribeye fajita was SO DELICIOUS! Our waitress Briana took great care of us. We were thrilled to have her. Highly recommend this place and would go back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Being from San Diego, we are always a little hesitant to try Mexican food elsewhere, because it usually just doesn't measure up to what we are used to. However, after multiple recommendations, we decided to try Las Montañas while we were in Aspen. I'm so glad we did, because it was delicious! Servers were very attentive throughout our meal. We tried the Jimmy's Own margs and the Rosado Paloma, both of which were very good. Appetizer was the Roasted Green Chile Queso...I could eat that by the gallon! Perfect amount of spice from the serranos, and it paired perfectly with homemade tortilla chips. For mains, we had the Chicken Tomatillo Enchiladas and the Achiote Chicken Chalupas. Both were excellent, though I would give the nod to the enchiladas as the better of the two. All in all, a great experience and fantastic lunch.

Yelp
Well prepared Mexican. Fun bar to wait for your table. The steak fajitas are enough for 2. One of my fave stops in Aspen.

Yelp
We absolutely loved the fajitas and the drinks we got here. Since it is Aspen, it is going to be expensive, but well worth it! We have tried to come here several times when we've been in town and it is not a secret that the food here is amazing. The fajitas were topped with melty cheese which was a nice surprise and super tasty! If you have a group over 8 you will likely need to be a separate but adjacent tables which actually worked out really well for us. My mouth is still watering from the shrimp and I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Popped in here after a little shopping in downtown Aspen. Thirsty and a little hungry, we decided to sit at the bar because the place was getting packed by the minute on a Sunday afternoon. Our bartender Amy was an absolute gem. She was very professional, personable and always had a smile on her face...seriously, you could see her positive energy before she even greeted us! We ordered some tasty and refreshing margs, chips/salsa, guacamole and queso. The chips were gigantic and fresh! The red salsa and tomatillo salsa was also good which had a slight bit of spiciness to it! The guacamole was very fresh and delish! The queso...yum, but watch out for those diced jalapeños! ;-) All in all...we had an exceptional experience at Las Montañas! Thanks again Amy! You took such great care of us...we so appreciate your stellar and professional service! You truly made our first visit here the absolute BEST!

Yelp
Was ignored for 10 straight minutes. Then attempted to ask for a seat or a menu for takeout and was completely blown off. Gave up. Walked out. Top notch Aspen BS.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch while wandering around Aspen. We were seated in the dining room and patiently waited and waited for a server. We finally had someone stop by and bring us water. We waited again then asked if they had a kids menu. No such luck but they said they could make things for kids. We didn't even order before someone else not our server took all our menus. The chips and salsa were good. The steak tacos (2 for $30) not so much. Steak way over cooked. The kids quesadilla with chicken was sad. One corn tortilla folded in half with chicken for $20. Ouch I know prices are high in the area but come on. The strawberry margarita was just a lime margarita with a spoonful of jelly in it. Even when mixed it was still lime. Definitely would try elsewhere.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant. The chips and salsa were the perfect start to our meal. We had the grilled fish tacos, crispy beef taco and picadillo enchiladas. The fish, tortilla, chipotle aioli, carrot puree, cumin rice, and housemade pinto were delicious. My brother was disappointed with beef since it was dry. We overall had a great visit.
google avatar

Yelp
The service, drinks and food were excellent. We enjoyed our dining experience and highly recommend this Mexican food restaurant. I am from South Texas where we have genuine Mexican food. Las Moñtanas exceeded all of our expectations.

Yelp
Food flavors were on point all around. Servers were very attentive and suggestive. It's a cozy place with an upbeat vibe. Fits right in to the Aspen scene. It's definitely on my list of places to visit every time I'm in Aspen. My only complaint is that they didn't open a Los Montañas back in my home town. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy!!!

Yelp
Absolutely incredible atmosphere, service, and food! We sat on the deck and it was beautiful, inside was very cozy as well. Everyone that worked there was so nice and really went above and beyond to make it a good experience. Loved the food!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Las Montañas is a great addition to the Aspen food scene. The chips and salsa to start are excellent. We ordered the fajitas which was just enough for two people. I was really impressed with the flour tortillas -- great texture and depth of flavor. The restaurant is cozy and festive. The service is high energy and fast. Insider's Tip: The restaurant is on the upper level of the shopping plaza.

Yelp
Just went there a few nights ago, the food could not have been tastier, and our waiter, Taylor was the best! Super conversant and worked very quick and precise. Love this place!
google avatar

Yelp
The service was great, the servers and hostesses were super nice, the steak carne Asada was delicious and the espresso martini was awesome chips and salsa very amazing. They even have Mexican coke

Yelp
I'm gonna start off by saying I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food. But everyone in my group wanted to come here. The drinks were good. We got the queso dip which also was very good. I ordered the Spanish octopus. It was so spicy I could barely eat it, and I will tell you there's nothing Spanish about it. All in all I wouldn't go out of my way to come back to this place.

Barbara F.

Yelp
We came two nights in a row to this restaurant. The first night I actually remarked "this is one of the best restaurants in the world" and planned to leave a 5 star review here. Service was great. Restaurant is beautiful and the food was outstanding. We liked it so much we came back a 2nd night. There was a family beside us with kids using iPads to watch a movie. In theory I don't have an issue with seeing the iPads at the table beside me but it was on full volume and extremely distracting to our table. I very politely asked the manager if she could ask the family to turn down the iPad or ask them to use headphones. The manager told me that the volume was not her problem and that if I had an issue with it, I could tell them myself. At that moment I wish I had just left the restaurant but we had ordered already and decided to move to sit at the bar area instead. It was an extremely disappointing handling of the events. The tone of the manager implied we were asking something out of the ordinary and that our experience should matter less. Do better!

Yelp
Food was good. Fajitas at 70 for steak - 2 guys split with the raw shrimp carpaccio was amazing but calamari was over done. Service was ok to good.
google avatar

Yelp
This is not "gourmet" Mexican food - not even close... As soon as I started eating I thought I was at an Indian restaurant. The rice tasted like Basmati, the tacos tasted like they poured a bottle of Cumin in it and were salty... when the hostess asked me how was the food I asked if this was Mexican /Indian fusion and she quickly quipped that each plate goes through five chefs before it comes to the table. NO JOKE!! I couldn't help but to think of all five "chefs" called in sick... she totally shut me down. No follow up no concern. Then the waitress came by and she asked how the food was. I said it was the worst Mexican food I had ever tasted - and it was...she quipped back and said " yes this is not California" Ok fine .... Good shot from her but again no follow up and no concern... I still tipped but left. Worst service and worst food I've ever had in ANY place I have ever been to. Up to you if you want to try it but I assure you, you will be disappointed... ANY restaurant can have a bad day... but at LEAST follow up with some alternatives.

Shant A.

Yelp
Great service !! Great Food !! Definitely will be coming back . Every employee who passed by stopped and asked if we needed anything else . Very impressed
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
Wow!! Had very low expectations considering we are from Houston and we are mexican food experts! This place is unbelievable. EXCELLENTÈ! This hands down the best non Texmex Mexican food I have ever had.
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 Expensive, but great selection of drinks and salsas. Service: 5/5 The bar staff is fantastic and quick to strike a conversation and offer recommendations! Environment: 4/5 Hard location to find, but a great view of the mountains even from indoors!

Yelp
This place is so great - food was delicious (do the fajitas!), ambiance was great, and the service was the best of my entire trip to Aspen. Our server was a tall guy with long hair and I'm so bummed I don't recall his name because he was so great. Helped us navigate the menu, never had an empty salsa bowl or water glass, and was just a fun hang. Can't wait to go back!

Wendy G.

Yelp
The best HH in Aspen. We sat at the bar, but there are bar tables as well. It's a very lively, fun, casual place with amazing views. K.C. was our bartender/server and he was friendly and attentive. We never had to wait for service, even though they were super busy. We went back 3 times to sit with K.C. He's the best! The margaritas and the food are really good. We had the coconut shrimp ceviche, tacos, chips and salsa and they were all very tasty. We also had the chicken fajitas, which are big enough to split between 2 people and it comes with melted cheese on a skillet with grilled jalapeños and rice, yummy! I highly recommend going here. I forgot to take photos, I was enjoying it so much.
google avatar

Piper M.

Yelp
The food is always good no matter what you get! You NEED to get the chocolate mouse it is sooooo good. The server was always so nice and he was very quick! Outdoor seating is very pretty.
google avatar

Monika P.

Yelp
The food was ok, not exceptional. The service was amazing though. I ordered the skiny margarita and beets salad
google avatar

Christina B.

Yelp
The waiters were super snobby and judgmental. We only got one drink each and I didn't order a meal because I ordered tons of food for the kids and I would probably finish theirs. I did order the calamari appetizers and it barley had any calamari. Another adult ordered the steak tacos and complained about the fact that they barely had any steak. Everything else was over salted. Also the adult meals took a long time and it was just a couple plates of tacos. Kinda weird. Pros: chips and salsa, especially the green salsa was amazing. The ambiance was fantastic. Other Mexican restaurants in Aspen are better
google avatar

Alex F.

Yelp
This place is lacking in all efforts and should be replaced. Rice and beans were good but only 2 spoons. I need to eat and well I was bummed. Other items junk. Calamari really poor 6 pieces of meat all other contents peppers. Bar tender nice enough. Manger had no comment to my mate who dropped over 400 in 3 hours. Mostly posting as he was so pissed. I will return for chips and salsa in December. I expected more high end Mexican cuisine.
google avatar

Chaya C.

Yelp
Great meal. We had the cucumbers and queso and split the sizzling steak fajitas (with a yummy cheese relleno)...the garlic jalapeño butter was DELICIOUS as well as the spicy sauce they brought on the side. Our server was nice and his service was quite good.

Jes J.

Yelp
Food quality: very good (tuna tartar for appetizer, taco and enchilada for dinner) wife had branzino and loved it. Service: very good. They seated us even though we didn't have a reservation with understanding we would have to clear out in about 1:15. No problem for us. Waiters attentive and friendly. Ambience: very good. Nice but not stuffy Extra: i got to be the first customer ever for their new mobile craft martini cart. I usually drink gin martinis. A tequila-based martini is an interesting and pleasant surprise. If you like tequila, i highly recommend giving it a try. I'll be having this again...i hope!

Audrey P.

Yelp
Food and service were amazing!! We loved everything we ate and drank. The table on the balcony was charming

Sandy S.

Yelp
Good service and food. I like dark lighting but it was actually too dark to read menu without flashlight.

Bennett J.

Yelp
AMAZING Mexican food and I'm from Texas so I'm picky! Fajitas were amazing! El Rancho dip was sooo good for queso not from TX. Anand our waiter went above and beyond! He gave us so many great tips and brought out this chili crunch sauce that was LIFE CHANGING on my tacos. So yummy and beautiful scenery. Great margs too!!
google avatar

Kevin G.

Yelp
Pretty unimpressive for high end Mexican food. For $40 the fajitas need to be the best you've ever had, but sadly just average. Rice tasted more like something you'd find in an Indian joint. The biggest ripoff was a $9 skewer of grilled vegetables that prob cost 50 cents at the market. Service was very fast.
google avatar

Marco G.

Yelp
The views are fine from the bar area located upstairs. Service was friendly and semi-attentive. The restaurant and Bathroom was very clean. For my meal, I ordered a barbacoa plate for $39. The meat was dry and side of potatoes were cold. The side of beans was the tastiest item on my plate. The dish came with one (1) flour tortilla. I repeat: only one tortilla. My wife ordered picadillo enchiladas and she said she liked them. The enchiladas portion was decent but the side of rice was undercooked and crunchy. I ordered two Micheladas at $10 a piece. One didn't have enough spices and looked the same color as the beer. The second michelada had more spices in the glass and tasted better but no salt or tajin on rim due to bartenders inadequate beer pour. Frozen Margaritas were tasty and basic at $14 a piece. Overall, I would not return as there are plenty of other options in walking distance with tastier food, larger portions and reasonable prices.

Brent W.

Yelp
The place we were trying to go had a huge waitlist so we went here. There were 10 of us and they handled the big party easily. The food was amazing. Especially the ribeye fajitas. The drinks were delicious and we had a great time. Glad the other place was full!

Kate H.

Yelp
I was only in Aspen for about 30 hours, and my Uber driver told me that if I wanted Mexican and had some money to spend, that I should have here. It was all wonderful, as was my server. I had a great time alone, and the view was killer!
google avatar

Michelle W.

Yelp
Great place for daily HH! Grab a seat at the bar and have a margarita or ranch water! The bartenders are efficient and friendly. We enjoyed the queso, tacos, and the chalupas. Everything was tasty, but I forgot to take photos of the food!
google avatar

Sid R.

Yelp
Great food, music, ambience, drinks, and service. You won't be disappointed. Not to miss
google avatar

Ad N.

Yelp
Food is 10/10. You don't feel greasy after leaving. I recommend the Red Snapper. Fun atmosphere. An enriching addition to the Aspen restaurants!
google avatar

Dominic G.

Yelp
Well, I've been all around the world and went to Mexico every year are the best places in Mexico and I still haven't found a place like this. This might be the best Mexican restaurant I've ever been to in my life, hands-down the chicken fajitas and the chicken enchiladas are the best in the world.
google avatar

Christine S.

Yelp
Terrific Mexican - and great drinks! Balcony was wonderful and they have a solid happy hour menu. Ranch Water is a terrific summer drink. Service was excellent- we will be back!
google avatar

Conner P.

Yelp
Awesome gourmet Mexican food, best chips in salsa in town. Frozen margs are amazing as well.

Ava T.

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance is amazing here. Highly recommend. Get the shrimp fajitas!

Breanna B.

Yelp
Everything was wonderful! Taylor is great! Best fajitas I've ever had - husband. Margs were really good! Wonderful
google avatar

Maureen G.

Yelp
Came for happy hour on Saturday apres ski. Beautiful space, great views, great happy hour menu. Food was really really good! Tacos, tostadas, comp chips and salsa (as it should be!). Great staff, tasty margs, Modelo with a shot was a hit.
google avatar

Mackenzie L.

Yelp
Beautiful views of the Aspen slopes from its second story location. Bar area is lively and beautiful. Food is awesome (had the chicken enchiladas -- which are spicy). Service was attentive but relaxed. Pricey but hey, it's Aspen.

P G.

Yelp
Best steak fajitas I've ever tasted. Great view and service. Not too over priced like other spots in Aspen
google avatar

Dylan M.

Yelp
Impressive Mexican cuisine. The alternatives are fairly lackluster so this is a welcomed addition. The enchilada plates were solid with nuanced flavor (the Picadillo platter in particular). The fajitas are probably the main draw and for good reason. Drinks menu is extensive. Ranch Water is the move.

Jane B.

Yelp
I love Las Montanas and have been several times, each time as enjoyable as the last but this time I was absolutely left disappointed not by the food, or the drinks, but our server was hands down one of the rudest people I have ever experienced! The vibe is always amazing but was ultimately brought down by the rude server.
google avatar

Claire K.

Yelp
Really great Texmex spot in Aspen! Have high expectations coming from Austin, TX, and Las Montanas absolutely delivered. Great drinks and food - love the combination of traditional Texmex with more modern, seafood focused Mexican dishes. Our waiter Omar was the BEST - his kindness and energy made our dinner extra special. We are in town a few times a year and will definitely be requesting him next time!
