Aah. Such a wonderful restaurant! I came here with a colleague one night for dinner while staying at a nearby hotel and was SO excited to be able to make same-day reservations during breakfast for dinner later that night.
There is a small café connected to the restaurant proper, but if you're looking for dinner, either enter from the outside near the West Walk or go through the café.
We were quickly seated and greeted by our host, Julien, who was super fun and friendly. Both of us chose the lighter prix fixe menu, and we were thrilled with the dishes.
-The amuse bouche was a globe of quinoa with spices. It was simple in presentation but full of flavor.
-Le Canard (duck confit atop potatoes with wine and black trumpet mushrooms): I am so upset...that everyone doesn't cook duck confit exactly the way they did! It was tender, not tough, and whatever they did to the potato parmentier made it blend perfectly. It was a unique preparation, almost like having cheese melted under a crispy, beautifully textured light breading. I am NOT a mushroom fan but am always willing to go out of my comfort zone at Michelin establishments, and I wasn't disappointed. This dish sent shock waves of warmth through my body.
-La Mangue (they described it as a "pineapple and mango symphony"...how am I not going to order the symphony??): A relatively uncomplicated set of sorbets atop a little biscuit. I loved the passion fruit puree and, well, just loved the whole thing. It looked unassuming but was a volcano of flavor.
We sat at the bar, which not only has a great vantage point of the rest of the dining room, but also confers you access to all the action in their fast-paced kitchen. I always enjoy sitting at the bar to get a pulse of how the staff work their magic.
Toward the end of the meal, we kept seeing Julien walk around with this huge display of desserts...it was like a pig made of chocolate with a veritable candy land of things on top of it. Not kidding. We kept eyeing it, thinking, "Who is getting all this dessert? Where are they going?" At last, he stopped by our seats and let us each choose two of the mini-desserts. YES! Choosing which to take was the hard part, and my colleague pointed to the only item on the plate that wasn't edible (it all looked wonderful). One of mine was a tiny fruit designed to look like a shiny red apple, and it was such an explosion of flavor!
This Robuchon restaurant comes at a steal of a price, ESPECIALLY given the relative pricing of things in the surrounding Roppongi Hills neighborhood. This is bad, though, because now every time I stay in Roppongi, I'm going to want to go here instead of trying somewhere new. ;-)
Encore, Joël. Encore.
