The Best Bakeries in the Twin Cities

"Laune Bread is known for its earthy, nutty vegan breads, naturally leavened with a sourdough culture and made with 60 percent or more whole grain flour. But don’t zip past the pastry case on the hunt for a loaf. Mandarin orange morning buns, twice-baked rhubarb currant croissants, and jalapeño cheddar biscuits are a great option for a quick, light breakfast on Lake Street." - Stacy Brooks, Eater Staff

I've had several different bakery items and pastries including a fruit tart, an apple scone, wheat croissant and whole wheat bread with fruit plus chocolate babka. Everything I have tried has been wonderful, I actually had no idea it was a vegan bakery when I first went to purchase some things. This is a great place to try healthy and hearty wheat and vegan baked goods.

I'm obsessed! Laune bread produces pastry wizardry. Truly in awe of how good everything they make is. Update: I've been coming here regularly for over a year now and I've never ever been disappointed. The pastries are varied and wonderful, the staff is so friendly, and the space is bright and welcoming. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

First time trying this neighborhood gem and bought a box of pastries to sample. Little did I know that Laune leans heavy into using whole wheat and most of their items are vegan! It does make for a heartier and denser taste - which takes a bit of an adjustment for me on the pastry side. Next time I aim to try their breads as I tend to enjoy whole wheat breads more.

Laune Bread is a lovely light-filled bakery on Lake St. Their breads (all of them) croissants, rotating pastries, and cookies are exceptionally good. They have a top notch selection of packaged food products and gift items. The coffee is great and I recommend the tea menu as well. The staff is kind, knowledgeable, and efficient.

*Updated 4/24: Laune started doing subscriptions and delivery to a number of places in town, and recently updated their app for both! We have been getting in our order on Sunday's and picking up at Dogwood NE. We always get a loaf of bread and then our weekly end of week pastries. LOVE that we can have Laune close to home. This place is THE best! *** Best bakery in town right now! This was my first time here and I got a number of things for take out. We ate every single thing we bought here, and more importantly liked it. It's a bit more of an 'earthy' bakery ~ perfect in our book. I really enjoyed the sandwich, and bought extra buns to make more sandwiches later in the week (froze them for a couple of days and they were still great after unthawing!). I was a little bummed the women in front of me slowly bought almost all the cookies they had; oh well guess I will have to come back. I really appreciate (and love to support) the effort's they make to support local farmers/use local ingredients ~ pretty amazing in this day and age. Tiff (I recognized her from their website) even came and packed up some of my goods noticing I was waiting :). The woman staffing the counter was very nice. Bright airy space (I can see if they had more seating it would be a popular hangout). Street parking (when there isn't the remnants of winter storms) seemed plentiful. The only thing I don't like about this place is that it isn't closer to where I live (Nordeast), but that makes it an extra special outing.

Google
Amazing bakery specializing in European whole-grain breads and pastries. Find treats like kolaches and pretzels here, as well as awesome little sandwiches. Love the coffee partnership with SK. I appreciate Laune's dedication to local ingredients and even local grain milling. The space is not big, but it's airy and relaxed. No free WiFi.

Google
Some of the best bread in the Midwest. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable about their breads. I’ve tried the Mueslibrot, multigrain, and the whole wheat pan loaf, and all 3 were excellent. Bread is always super consistent as well, I can go in on a Thursday and know that the bread will be as good as on a Saturday

Google
The quality of goods sold here is excellent! Their pizza has a hearty crust and full of toppings. Their baked goods (bread, pastries, croissants, etc) all have a fresh scratch made taste and appearance. The service is amazing too. Everyone that I've encountered there is friendly and greets customers with a warm greeting and genuine smile.

Yelp
Impressive collection of unique breads and sweet or savory pastries! The jalapeño cheese pretzel has deeply browned bubbling cheese all over it, with bits of jalapeño and tons of flavor. The blueberry polenta scone has a really nutty (but no nuts) grainy flavor. It has a crunchy craggy exterior, soft crumbly interior, and filled with little wild blueberries. I will definitely be back to try the other selections!

Yelp
I went to Laune for the first time in early June, around 8:30am in order to try to get the best selection of some of their pastries (they opened at 8am). I first learned of Laune Bakery via my favorite bakery in St. Paul, Brake Bread. I selected four different sweet pastries and brought them home in order to enjoy with a homemade cup of hot coffee and save a few bucks. Those four pastries set me back just shy of $20. My selections were all amazing in flavor, texture, appearance. I cut each one in half to enjoy a bit of each that morning and saved the halves for the next morning's coffee. The following Friday when I was out driving & running errands, I returned in the early afternoon to try a "slab" of their pizza. I don't remember what toppings were on that slab, but I did ask them to heat it up, which they did, and I ate it there. And it was good.

Yelp
This is a neat little bread shop tucked away on Lake Street. I walked in around closing and the choices were limited, which in my opinion is a good thing! Staff were super friendly and explained all of the options left. I also noticed that they participate in Too Good To Go which I adore! I tried a loaf of the sough dough which wasn't my favorite but the guests I had for dinner liked it. In reality I don't think I was prepared for the sears throughout the bread. I also grabbed a caramelized onion pastry which was super good. I will definitely return to see what other options they have. It's also really cool space! I could see myself reading a book while having a pastry here or catching up with a friend over coffee. If you're in the area and haven't checked this place out do so!

Yelp
My favorite bakery in the cities. They're open breakfast and lunch hours and offer a wide selection of whole-grain, creative breads and pastry. There is a small core menu but everything else rotates seasonally and they've got a "bakers whim" load that changes weekly with what they have on hand and feel like making. The owners/bakers and staff are all extremely helpful, friendly, and happy to answer any questions you have. They do a lot with the community and local producers to promote inclusion and sourcing as close to the oven as possible. I dropped off a bunch of cherries from my trees and they gave me some store credit! All their stuff has a high percentage of whole grain which gives it a fantastic earthy flavor without being bitter. Most of it is also sourdough which makes it more digestible and gives a nice tang. On Fridays they have pizza that's amazingly flavorful. Their cheese pretzel is naturally levened, fluffy, and just salty enough from the cheese. Haven't tried the simit yet but I'm sure it's amazing. I'll be back as soon as I can justify more carbs!

Yelp
Best healthy bread in south Minneapolis!! Great choices, locally sourced ingredients, and baked by a well-trained baker. Pastries are totally delicious and not over-sweet. Such variety of savory flavors. Weekly "Baker's Whim" has some fantastic grain combinations. Very friendly customer service. They are worth a drive!

Yelp
I am so glad I got to stop by. I came in and got cinnamon roll, curry lentil roll, and a sourdough bread. Everything was very good. I liked their cinnamon roll a lot. The lady working behind the counter, probably the owner, was very nice. I just wished they open daily. Next time I will buy a bunch of breads and freeze them because I don't bake. :)

Yelp
Great food and exceptional service. Ordered bread and treats to bring to a family gathering. The macaroons were really tasty. There was a minor issue with my order and the staff offered a few options to resolve it. At the end, they went (literally) out of their way to make sure I got my order right and could delight the event guests. Really impressed with this place and will be back when I am next in town.

Yelp
Masters in the baked goods arts. Smaller shop for seating, but always a bit of a line, which is a good sign. High quality bread!

Yelp
We were there with the family, it is an incredibly delicious place. Lots of pastries, we really liked it

Yelp
Luane Bakery is one of those spectacular neighborhood spots that you feel lucky to find. Their breads and baked goods are delicious and they source sustainable ingredients in support of the environment and society. The employees are nice and my experiences there have all been positive.

Yelp
Sourdough bakery with a nice selection and a few vegan options. Pre-made sandwiches are nice.

Yelp
The baked goods were absolutely beautiful and delicious. The bakery was spotlessly clean, and the single table for sitting and eating was a picnic style. We visited with the other people who are enjoying some of the sweets and the delicious coffee I recommended.

Yelp
I had Laune's bread before they opened their storefront, and despite my excitement over them opening a store in my neighborhood I hadn't managed to get there until today. Is there anything better than pastries and coffee on a chilly, snowy April Saturday? Laune offers bread subscriptions and delivery, which they've been doing since the beginning, but now their storefront offers walk-in bread and pastry purchases, albeit on a limited Thursday-Saturday schedule. It is worth taking the time to stop in! I was amazed with the variety of pastries they had for being a pretty small bakery, there was so much to choose from. I had a spinach cheese croissant and a cardamom walnut coffee cake and enjoyed both (I finished both within the 10 minute walk home). I'm excited to try their sandwiches and Friday pizza soon, as well. I was surprised that the pastries didn't cost more than they did ($4-5 avg) for the quality and hyperlocal ingredients they use. Laune has a number of things that make it unique: all of their breads are naturally leavened sourdough; they are very serious about their ingredient sourcing (76% midwest, 48% minnesota--amongst other stats that they are very transparent about https://launebread.com/sourcing), they have a bread fund to donate loaves to members in the community, and they offer bread delivery subscriptions. This little company is doing so much and not comprising their values. I love that they are part of my community. I highly recommend stopping in (hot tip: they have coffee, too).
