The Best Barbecue Restaurants and Carts in Portland | Eater Portland

"Pitmaster Kevin Koch taught himself how to make the Kansas City-style barbecue of his childhood, first opening Lawless BBQ as a kind of ghost kitchen before opening a brick-and-mortar. There, diners can find his Kansas City-style barbecue sauces atop tender ribs, pork belly burnt ends, or as optional dips for brisket that’s smoked for 13 hours. Fans of saucier, sweeter barbecue without especially assertive smoke flavor will be happily licking their fingers here." - Ron Scott

We came here for lunch one day as we wanted some bbq. I believe this used to be the old Pacific Pie Co. location. The interior is pretty spacious, and they also have some outdoor seating. We ordered an assortment of items to share among the three of us. We ordered the daily special, which was the Brisket Philly. Brisket nachos, burnt ends, sausage, wings, brisket, and some waffle fries. I really enjoyed their wings, which were smoked and then fried, I believe. I also liked their brisket and sausage as both were flavorful. The burnt ends were a bit on the sweet side for me. The nachos were great to share. Overall, we had a good meal and would come back.

Google
Two of us shared the lawless platter with waffle fries and mac & cheese as sides. It was less sweet and salty than other BBQ places, which was really great to me! The server was very friendly and explained well to us. They recently moved in, so the tables are very clean. It would be nice if they had a draft beer option.

Google
Great burnt ends! That's the thing to get here! Chili was delicious as well! Mac and cheese needs some pepper flakes or hot sauce. Collard greens are ok. Pickles are delicious! Over all great experience! 6.5/10

Google
Stellar BBQ right in the heart of the industrial east side. We tried the brisket, burnt ends, collard greens, potato salad and chili, plus the banana pudding for desert. Every item was done just right, from tenderness of the brisket to the caramelization on the burnt ends and the banana on top of the banana pudding. The bbq sauce is so good, saucy and sweet!! They just moved into the neighborhood where I work, so I’ll definitely be back!

Google
Excellent customer service. I believe the lady behind the counter was named Linda, the manager. So nice and thoughtful when getting our order ready to go. At the last minute, I had to split the order on the receipt and was extremely accommodating. And the brisket burger with a slice of brisket also on top was phenomenal, especially for the price. Do yourself a favor and check this place out.

Google
Highly recommend you guys check this place out if you’re in the area. The meat is very tender and flavorful. The food came out fairly quick. Pricing is very fair for the quality and portion. The staff is amazing, despite coming close to closing the employees were still super nice and we did not feel like we were being rushed out of there! Definitely will be coming back!

Google
Had a good, straightforward brisket sandwich with plenty of meat that got to shine/wasn’t drowning in sauce. Collard greens side was especially great. Space was totally empty during lunch on a Thursday, unfortunately. Hope more people start to come. Good deal on good bbq and great service. They mentioned they had new menu items coming soon.

Google
Excellent lunch value here, $9-12 sandwich depending on what you select. Very clean place, large amount of seating. Smells great all the time even from outside. Sides are great, I prefer the vinegar slaw. You could probably just pig out and get ribs too, which are $28 for a rack.

Yelp
I was nearby and grabbed a brisket on brioche sandwich to go. It comes with a side of choice. The meat and bread was so go! How did I not know this place existed?! I will be coming back!

Yelp
I love BBQ and this was some pretty good stuff but a bit expensive. I did get a platter that had 4 different types of meat and two sides but cost a total of nearly $50. I know meat isn't cheap either so it's somewhat understandable. The flavor was decent, wasn't seasoned a ton, but was very tender. The baked beans were fantastic though, I love beans. Customer service is non-existent here because it's all ordering through a QR code which is fine but there's not much to say about that.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food. I love they had beer as well. The seating area was great. I only reason why 4 stars was because we got there 1 hr after they opened and they were out of 3 things and the guy wasn't friendly at all.
google avatar

Dominic R.

Yelp
Service sucked. Rude men behind the counter. Make sure you find seating before ordering not that it matters because the tables aren't labeled. Brought my boyfriend for his birthday and off of our experience won't be back. They seemed overwhelmed there's less than 30 tables it's not that serious. If I could give a zero I would foods as good as the atmosphere and they really killed it for me.

Yelp
Kansas City BBQ- moist; rich smoky flavor. Old Lompoc Hedgehouse location. Casual, friendly.

Yelp
I'd been wanting to try this for a while, especially as I already really like the beer from Little Beast. Finally got a chance and I loved it! The sides were tasty, but the highlight was the burnt ends sannich with Mac and cheese on it. Soooo good. I'll be back for that item alone Also tried the brisket sandwich, which was pretty dry. The brisket plate was better, but didn't beat out the burnt ends. All in all really liked what I tried. Will be back for sure.

Yelp
What a great little find! Stopped into Lawless BBQ to grab some dinner on a week night. Went inside and put in a takeout order at the bar, the server was friendly, the playlist was on point. It wasn't super busy but lots of couples sitting outside, most had dogs with them. Lots of little quirky details inside. I had the burnt ends sando & green chili sausage. Both were really good but that mac and cheese wasn't anything to write home about. Big points for quality and the smoke flavor of the meat, bbq is an easy thing to mess up and they definitely did it right.

Yelp
Cool vibes, great beers, card games, good music. Nice spot to get out of the rain... burnt ends are very tasty, but not as "burnt" as I have had them before. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I do like them more done. Very meaty and great bbq sauce, if a little bit pricey at $25. Bartenders are friendly!

Yelp
We love brisket. We sometimes barbecue it ourselves, but it's just so much work. It's so much easier to just go somewhere and order it. We tried Lawless Barbecue on a Saturday, and it did not disappoint. The brisket was juicy and tender and had a nice smoke ring and crispy bark. We also tried the burnt ends, which were equally good. We see that some reviewers found their burnt ends to be a little dry, but that was definitely not the case on our order. Ours were crispy on the outside but very tender and juicy on the inside. They have outdoor seating, which we really liked. When you eat barbecue it's nice to have fresh air where you can smell the aroma of smoke without having to breathe it. The eating area was quiet and is dog friendly. For sides, we tried the vinegar slaw and the potato salad. Both were excellent. The cook the potatoes on the firm/crunchy side, which was nice, and they topped it with bacon bits. The other thing that we really liked was that there is a really good pie place right next door. You can go there after you finish your barbecue.

Yelp
Nice spot to grab some barbecue and beer. There are picnic tables outside, which are perfect for a warm day. The service is good via an online order service where you can both order and pay. For food, the barbecue is above average; would rank food 7.5/10.

Yelp
This is such a great hidden gem. The restaurant is right off Division in a very popular area. I will admit parking (and driving the narrow streets) can be a bit taxing, but finding a spot that is walkable is very do able. Inside is very nice and cozy. There is also a huge amount of seating outside. Ordering is very easy, you can either go to the bar or use a QR code and open a tab. Pricing is pretty reasonable at about $15 to $25 for a meal. I will say my portion, the brisket, felt a bit small at 2 pieces. As for the food. As I side I got the brisket and one piece was perfection. The right amount of fat to meat. The other piece was more meaty and less fatty so didn't "melt" like the first. The meat was seasoned well, and didn't need the bbq sauce it came with but worked well with it. Sadly, they were out of short ribs at the time, did offer to bring some out as soon as they were ready but we were tired and so opted for the burnt ends. Again, very good and soft. The sauce was perfect with them and the portion was perfect for a filling lunch. My only "complaint" were the baked beans. They were not like any baked beans I've ever had. They were much more like sweet refried beans. They were good, just not what was expected. If in the area for lunch, we will be sure to visit again, maybe have a drink this time.

Yelp
Love this BBQ I liked that it didn't have a strong smoke flavor, which sometimes can be over powering. We tried Sliced Brisket, Pork Ribs and Burnt Ends. All were very tender. The Burnt ends my favorite were delicious. The mac and cheese, beans and the Chili for sides were delicious. Waitress that brought the food out was friendly. You pay for everything up front when you order so once the food was delivered we didn't see a server again. We will definitely come back worth the drive in from WA.

Yelp
I'm so glad Lawless joined little beast brewery! Two great spots at one location cannot be beat! We always get their nachos and add the meat and peppers. Our daughter loves their kids meal and it's way more food than she can eat! And I love both their pulled pork and their brisket sandwich. I love burnt ends but I haven't been able to pull the trigger on $22 for a half pound of burnt ends! One of these days! Ordering barbecue from the QR code and having it delivered quickly is a plus!
google avatar

Yelp
The Frito chile is better then the brisket nachos Ribs are a bit on the smaller side. Mac was cold, okay flavor. I wish Clays smokehouse stayed in that area

Yelp
Tried it, unfortunately didn't like it. Picked up an order for lunch on a Monday. Ordered brisket sandwich, burnt ends, and one pork rib. Things looked better than it tasted. Brisket was cut from flat so on the dry side (and chopped-not like the pictures that had nicely cut brisket slices). Burnt ends were dry although covered with sauce, heavy on pepper with a few scattered pieces of fatty portions. Otherwise pretty much tasted like beef jerky. Ordered one pork rib to try--nothing special there either. The sides were bbq beans with pork (very little meat) and collard greens. With the total bill coming in at 42, not one of the better BBQ places I've been.

Yelp
Stopped by tonight. We ordered LAWLESS PLATTER Beef brisket, pork ribs, sausage and turkey. Come either 2 side. Everything good tender juicy not to salty which we liked. Friendly service. You can eat inside or outside. Oh don't forget to order banana pudding so delicious. Also always bbq with good beer. Our favorite is lilikoi sour!

Sedona H.

Yelp
Came here spontaneously last weekend after a sunny afternoon. The bartender serving us was super friendly and helpful with his recommendations and did not disappoint. They ran out of the ribs earlier which was no problem (tells me that they're a hit) and so we opted for the pulled pork sandwich, side of mac and cheese and loaded potato salad. Portions were great, flavors were delish and we will definitely be returning. Inside had small quaint seating but they had a lot of outdoor seating under tents that seemed to have heaters for the colder days.

Yelp
Friendly staff, cool atmosphere, dog friendly, decent bbq, meh on the beer selection.

Yelp
I'm from KC! Grew up there! This is close as you're gonna come on the west cost! At least so far in what I've had, and have searched it out. Sauce is damn near spot on! Have yet to buy any thing by the pound and have had ribs and chopped brisket. While it was really really good, there are a few recommendations I'd have. At least an option for just plain sliced white bread. That's very KC. Cheap ass pickles from a bucket in lieu of homemade soft thin pickles. Raw onion chunk is for a McRib not a real sandwich from a bbq spot lol. Beans are great! Brisket is great. A crispy buttered brioche bun is distracting from the real star, the meat and sauce! Just my opinion and no way takes away from the best bbq I've had since leaving Kansas City

Yelp
Monday night BBQ if you go out to dine on a Monday evening many places might not be open. So Lawless is open which makes a nice spot. The website says Slow Smoked Kansas City BBQ. My first time in Kansas City in March there was the first BBQ of the year outside the hotel since I always had a soft spot for Kansas City BBQ a bit of sunshine and as I remember having some Louisianna gulf shrimp...and lots of booze from the hotel mini fridge. Charlie Morin and I went to a wheelchair basketball final tournament in Kansas City. The atmoshere a nice long pair of ramps to get in the backside of this really neat older home turned restaurant Little Beast Brewery. Inside some accessible restrooms. Tempting to have a beer with the BBQ. Friendly service you can order and pay all remotely from your phone. Service was super friendly not cloying just nice stop by and say hi delivery your plater with all the fixing. Lawless Platter had smoked turkey with Carolina white bbq sauce on them. Sweet bbq sauce and a yellow sauce on the sides. The slaw superb as is the potato salad neither is overbearing but rather great flavors coming through. The brisket was falling apart great taste stacked on white bread. The sausage had a nice touch of spice. The ribs were your standard pork ribs. So many good meats you find yourself picking your favorites first and on to the next. Pickled red onions I think and the side of pickles added a nice touch. Cool a/c inside outside many people socializing. Many picnic tables and beer benches out front. But inside this nice stylish restaurant and long bar. People coming in for to go orders. Great food and service.

Yelp
The food was super good, and the beer was good and unique flavor. I got a piña colada flavored beer so good. Outside seating was nice and the food came out quickly. Kid and dog friendly is a plus for us.
google avatar

Steven J.

Yelp
Delicious bbq, the brisket is so moist and tender....I really love this place! Bbq beans are sweet which is something I enjoy and look for when I eat bbq beans. Too many people make them savory!!! Which isn't bad but this is unique for me. The banana pudding is fire!!!! And the place is nestled into one of my favorite places to grab a pint of beer?!?! What more can I say!!!!

Eugenio T.

Yelp
$25 for a half pound of bone dry brisket and no table service. Oh also they make you pay for food and drinks up front before serving. For the money there are significantly better BBQ options in Portland than here. The hype does not reflect the pricing or quality.

Craig L.

Yelp
Best BBQ I've had in Portland so far. Also the beer selection was top-notch, and all the workers I interacted with were lovely. A pretty perfect experience in general.
google avatar

Adam D.

Yelp
Great service and the brisket was amazing! Will definitely be returning next time in town.

Chandler M.

Yelp
Good classic barbecue food. Only outdoor seating but they do have heaters. Combined with a brewery so a lot of good drinks to choose from.
google avatar

Chuck D.

Yelp
First time ordering food from here. Disappointing in several small ways that add up to having no interest in returning. PACKAGING: if you're going to put a few hot items into an oversized paper bag for delivery -- in this case by an Uber Eats driver who didn't care and drove with the windows down on a cold day -- the least you can do is fold-over and secure the top so it's not just gaping open and catching every cold breeze. It was all barely lukewarm by the time it arrived. The best places separate the hot and cold into separate bags sized for minimal excess space, and close them up tight. FOOD: The mac and cheese was dry and tasteless and topped with dry tasteless breadcrumbs. The un-toasted sandwich bun was dried-out and blah and so immediately removed. Otherwise the food would have been pretty good if it weren't cold from careless packaging and delivery. Which makes scrimping on the bbq sauce a silly unforced error. We got their $45 signature platter including brisket and ribs ... and it came with one little plastic container of bbq sauce. Better places always provide more than enough bbq sauce, because doing so is an inexpensive way to avoid unnecessarily frustrating customers. There are too many places in this town that go above-and-beyond and attend to the small details that add up to a great customer experience for a restaurant to succeed with such mediocre effort and attention.

Moha L.

Yelp
I was not sure which BBQ place to try since there is quite a variety here in Portland. I went with name Lawless and hit the jackpot. Great spot to get your cravings out for a delicious BBQ and nice selection of beer. We tried Burnt ends and Brisket plate and it was mouth watering delicious. The Mac and cheese was amazingly good with vinegar slaw w/pecans. The staff was courteous and the environment was relaxed. Inside and outside seating available. I was so happy with my choice that ended up buying a T-shirt.
google avatar

Jeremy T.

Yelp
I had higher expectations that what we ate. Honestly, some of the food felt like it wasn't freshly prepared as we were early lunch customers. Service was great, the turkey was great, brisket was good on the sandwhich but colleagues stated quite good on a tray. Mac and cheese I wouldn't order again.
google avatar

Timothy M.

Yelp
Overall food was amazing! Burnt ends were flavorful, tender, and juicy!! And the nachos had the perfect ratio of all the fixings. Great service and ambiance. 10/10
google avatar

Shirley M.

Yelp
Best in Portland. Go early because they may run out of what you want. Everything is really good, but I'm a brisket lover and Lawless is the best.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Ordered three (2) item plates. Everything was delicious service was friendly, place was clean. Inside is small but they have a large, covered outdoor seating area. Burnt ends and brisket were perfect. Mac and cheese good. Excellent coleslaw. And then get a pie from the shop next door! Lots of good beer choices.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
BBQ pork was tasty, mac and cheese was like box mac and cheese. Potatoes in the potato salad were not cooked enough, very hard.
google avatar

Jake J.

Yelp
All I had was a sandwich made pulled pork and it was pretty good. Probably nothing like authentic Texas barbecue but still for hippie Portland not bad at all.
google avatar

Af R.

Yelp
How have I never been here?! The Turkey is delish! I wish it was sold by the pound. The white sauce is awesome as are the cheesy grits. I'll be back!

Mary C.

Yelp
We ordered takeout for Father's day. Everything was absolutely delicious!!! Service was friendly and quick, and we will definitely be back SOON. We had heard great things about the burnt ends, and they were even better than we had expected. Pork ribs were amazing, the brisket had that delicious melt-in-your-mouth quality, everything was beautifully, deeply smoky. But the turkey astonished us: so smoky, so delicious, and so moist, it was really a revelation. We tried and loved all three of their sauces. The loaded potato salad (sour cream, not mayonnaise) was incredible, the vinegar slaw with pecans was another delicious surprise, and the beans were a huge hit. We loved every single bite of what we ordered, and we'll be back again and again.
google avatar

Alec S.

Yelp
Oh you're hungry? And in the middle of Portland? Go to Lawless. $15 gets you a feast and you'll literally fall asleep after. Mac and cheese in the sando? LOVED IT. Had to smack a few dairy pills but sometimes it's necessary ya know? Got the baked beans as a sided and demolished it. Good beer, friendly staff who play good music and tasty food. Don't think twice, give it a try. You won't have to eat for the rest of the day.
google avatar

Sami S.

Yelp
We got the burnt ends for a Super Bowl party and the only thing I regret is that I had to share them. I wanted them all for myself. They were incredible! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Cindy I.

Yelp
Finally found a good pulled pork sandwich! The pork was lean but still moist. Sorry I can't comment on the slaw as I had them hold it since I don't like any slaw. The bun was soft but didn't fall apart. The sauce was a little on the sweet side with just a touch of tang and no heat which is good for me. Oh and it was huge. I think I ate 1/2 to 3/4 and was stuffed so I have some for lunch today. Husband got the spare ribs and let me have a bit. Super tender!! Slight smokiness and the same sauce as the pulled pork. We both thought they were great. Baked bean were good and Mac and Cheese was very creamy style with some bread crumbs on top. I think my husband likes M&C with a little more flare like jalapeño peppers but I liked these just can't eat too much.... Lactose. What's missing? Some type of bread like cornbread or soft rolls or something. Maybe someday....

Dana G.

Yelp
Food was cold when picked it up. Brisket was super salty and fatty. Paid $25 for nothing but fat. No flavor in the meat. Greens were bland and loaded potato salad had nothing but eggs. Have had amazing bbq in past and wouldn't recommend it if you know how to cook and know your bbq.

Keaton P.

Yelp
Now that just tears it. That I spent $18 (w/ tip) on this glorified McDonald's burger is so aggravating. It was dry and flavorless beyond the ketchup. What an absolute waste of money. Not to mention the chips
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
These guys do it right and have generous portion sizes, wow. Ribs were my favorite, but the brisket was a close second. I usually eat more of the sides than the meats and every one of the 5 I tried was delicious. The beans had onion rings as a topper - hellllllo and thank you for that fun goodness! I had it delivered and it held up really nicely, they have sturdy to-go containers. They even gave us wet wipes and a couple of tootsie rolls. It's attention to detail like that that made me want to share with y'all that this place is worth your $. They are doin it right!
google avatar

Brandon M.

Yelp
Food is delicious and portions are big. I like that they also to beef ribs in special occasions. I wish they had cornbread but all the food is dank!!
google avatar

Kaylee S.

Yelp
brisket sandwich. all i have to say. make sure you come here hungry. you'll definitely need room in your stomach here
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
Moving here from Texas, I was a little leery of PORTLAND BBQ. After a couple big misses, I was ready to retire BBQ from my tastebuds. Thanks to Portland Mercury, I came across Lawless Barbecue. My people, we got ourselves a winner. Great bite, tasty sides, people serious about BBQ. Tips: Ask about the specials. They are located at the Little Beast Beer Garden. Street parking is real. Do what you got to do. Lastly, thank me later.
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
Really great BBQ! Seems like everything just falls apart...especially in your mouth First time here and service was awesome. They're super sweet gals and very attentive. They even brought out a complementary desert, they're truly the best! Definitely coming back and bringing the tribe too...cause I didn't leave much leftovers

M. C.

Yelp
We're from California and this bbq place is AWESOME!!!! Highly recommended with great service.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
If I was just reviewing the banana pudding I would have given the place 4 stars. However, the rest of the food wasn't my favorite. The Mac and cheese and the beans are very average. The pork sandwich and the brisket sandwich were disappointing. I may be too used to Texas bbq but this place did not cut it for me. The brisket sandwich had this odd cheese wiz and would get a 2/10 for me.
google avatar

Jody J.

Yelp
There is a new kid in town for BBQ. I had it on my list as soon as I found out they were going to be offering take out/delivery. This review is based on a delivery order from DoorDash. Portland really doesn't have a lot of BBQ choices and over the past year we've lost a couple of the better BBQ places. I've been in search for a new go to. I ordered a 2+2 plate which consists of two meats and two sides. I went with ribs, brisket, mac & cheese, potato salad and it comes with Texas toast, pickles and onions and 2 sauces. I also ordered the brisket chili which came with a whole slew of condiments... Jalapeños, oyster crackers, sour cream, onions and cheese. Nice! Delivery was pretty speedy and when it arrived the bag was taped shut and no foul was used. Which I am a big fan of! The portions were decent for the price and they didn't forget anything and actually it was nice they remembered sauces, condiments, wet wipes and even added a couple dumdum suckers to the bag. The brisket chili was delicious and very hearty/thick. The condiments they provided were a great addition. The brisket was served on top of Texas toast and was a pretty thick slice. It was pretty juicy with a small smoke ring around the perimeter. It was a good but a bit on the salty side. I loved both of the barbecue sauces that came with it. You can also purchase a container of the sauces as an option. The ribs were fall off the bone delicious and tender they came with the sweet sauce on them and I added a bit more. There was a small bit of gristle but not too bad. Potato salad was more like a baked potato salad and it was topped with bacon and green onions. It was kosher instead of sweet. Creamy and wonderful. The potatoes were cooked perfectly! The Mac and Cheese was topped with panko. The consistency of the sauce was rich and thick. The noodles were cooked perfect. A little more sharpness to the cheese would've put it over the top. It was delicious though. All in all this was a great meal which actually ended up being two meals for me. The reason for four stars is due to the salt content of the brisket. Remember your patrons can always add salt so over salting isn't necessary. I WILL be back and I am looking forward to trying other menu items including that banana pudding dessert. It is very apparent that the owners are trying hard and want to make a difference. Thanks! :-) Check them out!

Marleny T.

Yelp
Food was bland and super cold and overly priced, the waiter ? Bartender ? Was very nice though. You can say we were disappointed and still hungry.
