On the Grid : Le Baron Rouge

"Shoppers from the nearby marché d'Aligre inevitably make their way to le Baron Rouge for happy hour. In a beautiful marriage between a bar and wine cellar, the atmosphere is just the right amount of grunge to pique your curiosity but not scare you away. The wines, of course, are cheap and good; and the charcuterie and oysters plates are served on barrels converted into counters." - Violaine & Jérémy

"While it's not required, locals bring their own glass bottles and fill them with wine from the barrels near the door. This is not a place for picky oenophiles as the wine here is more the "house" variety, but it's still a great place to put back a few glasses with some small plates."

Best wine bar I’ve been to in my life. 60+ options of wines by the glass. If you’re not sure which to select, the friendly staff will help you choose the perfect wine. And the wines are priced very affordably. Also have lots of snacks to pair with your wine. Good mix of locals and foreigners. A delightful stop for anyone who loves wine….

Google
Nice little wine bar, which has become famous for tourist and locals. If you want some wine and have a nice atmosphere you can go here. You can sit inside or stand outside. Would go again, to have some food with it as well

Evan if I a was like a tourist and there many international people, this is a great place for traditional French style with wine and oysters!! All the people outside alongside the street with a glass of wine and plate with oysters! Amazing experience, I really like it!!

Google
Wow! What a place. Visited on Sunday afternoon and it was jam packed! Amazing wine selection for €3/4 a glass. Oysters were €20 for 12 served with bread of course! Great relaxed atmosphere and a perfect way to spend a Sunday. Will return 100% on next visit.

Google
It’s a bit further out from touristy places and has a very local feel to the whole area. Huge wine selection, amazing prices. Chicken Paté/cheese plate was phenomenal. Will definitely go back when in Paris.

Google
Finally made it here!! Since it’s such a popular spot, I came right when they opened. It was already busy, but we managed to get a table. The reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is that while they have a great selection of wines, I wish they provided better explanations or guidance for each one.

Google
Love this place! We rented a bike that day and rode to this wine bar, and it was definitely worth it. We enjoyed the charcuterie and oysters with bottles of wine all afternoon. You want to visit this place. Oh one tip: for the oysters you need cash!😊

Yelp
I LOVE this place! Great wines to choose from and accompanying little bites superb. Somehow the staff manages everything very well even when crowded. A very cozy place that spills out onto the sidewalk. I look forward to my next visit!

Yelp
Cute little wine bar, we stopped in here during a food tour and stayed for an extra glass of wine. Lots of good wine to choose from, and there's sometimes a fresh oyster vendor out front who will shuck your oysters and bring them to you inside. We enjoyed popping in and may have stayed longer but there was so little seating! We were standing for two glasses of wine, so we eventually went hunting for somewhere to take a load off.

Yelp
We visited last year and had such a wonderful time here that we, in part, chose to stay in the local neighborhood this year. It is just a block from Marche d'Aligre. We stopped in here for an apero any night we could and also bought wine to take away straight from the barrel. The bartender are great and very knowledgeable. They were patient with our limited French. The crowd is always fun and we seemed to meet someone interesting (from all over the world) every night. That being said, it also has a fantastic neighborhood bar feel.

Yelp
This place was awesome. I was really excited to go, but when I got there it was so full that it was completely spilling out on to the street. With the language barrier and having to squeeze through the masses of people, I decided to skip it. I liked the set up inside, I liked that you could get wine directly from the barrel. The prices per glass were cheap and the wine must have been good given the crowds. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood and having a good time and it was the middle of the day. The next time I'm here, I will definitely make it a point to stop in.

Yelp
Great and fun place. Small as many places are in Paris but the crowd just spills out front and up the street. We loved this place as it was so festive. Walk right up to the bar and get all sorts of wines at very reasonable prices. Food basically consisted of charcuterie and oysters. They may have had other small plates but can't say that for sure. I highly recommend Le Baron Rouse for a fun time!

Yelp
To say Le Baron Rouge is one of the best places for a glass of wine in Paris is an understatement. Le Baron Rouge IS the best place for a glass of wine in Paris. Period. First - Quentin is the best. He is extremely knowledgeable and made our experience all the better. When we arrived early evening, the place was already BUSTLING with people - inside, outside, just hanging on the sidewalks with glasses of wine. We felt right at home. We stopped in anticipating to indulge in a single glass of wine before dinner, but that, however, quickly turned into four glasses (no regrets). We tried everything from red to white to sparkling, and we enjoyed every single one. Offerings covered a wide range of tastes, and prices were surprisingly extremely inexpensive. We found a different restaurant close by on our final night in Paris just so we had a practical excuse to come back here again. The desire to come back to the same place two times in one short trip is proof this spot is incredible. Also to note** - if you're a gossip girl fan like my friend and me, yes, this is the Chuck Bass (Henry Prince) wine bar!

Yelp
A highlight of our short trip to Paris in February, Le Baron Rouge was charming and fun. We arrived around 6PM and grabbed a spot near the front as the bar began to fill up. Loved trying a few of their house wines while watching locals come by with their various vessels to reload directly from the wine barrel taps.

Yelp
Well this is exactly the sort of place I was hoping to hit in Paris - a lovely, traditional wine bar that just screams authenticity. I'm not too sure if it would translate in England, we'd no doubt try and hipster it up or change the elements to make it attract a more upmarket clientele... But when we visited this place it was just like "yes - this is why we've come to Paris" Ok so maybe some of the experience was lost on me as I wasn't drinking - hey, I enjoyed my glass of Perrier water (#retro) but my friends were knocking back copious amounts of wine at very low prices and this really made it a top party place to be. Great charcuterie inside and a guy doing oysters outside - yep, that really wouldn't work in ol'Blighty - I think we'd probably end up selling mini burgers instead unfortunately. This is why we travel - to hot these super authentic places!!

Yelp
La Baron Rouge is a small informal bar packed full of good French wines and was one of the absolute highlights of our Paris trip - we all enjoyed a couple of hours in here sharing a few bottles and sampling the plates of charcuterie. Its walls are racked with innumerable bottles and there are large barrels where locals bring their empties to get them filled directly and more cheaply for drinking at home. Seating space is very limited - there's room for probably 10-12 at the small tables. You can stand at the bar or by the doors but it's extremely popular so don't be surprised if the only room available is on the pavement outside. You needn't be disappointed though - on Sundays you can watch them prepare oysters outside for eating there and then. An old traditional French gem crammed with character and no pretension whatsoever - a must visit if you're in the city.

Yelp
Don't expect excellent service, rare vintages or captivating decor. Le Baron Rouge is about sharing a glass (or pitchers) with friends, exposing yourself to new wine regions or taking a liter (or 3 or 5) of cheap wine home with you. The bar has an appealing, low maintenance, down home feel to it--something that's becoming harder and harder to find these days. There are a few tables inside, along with plenty of counter space and a giant, old wine barrel where you may rub elbows with any of the other clients. Outside the bar, plates of cheese and charcuterie are served on make-shift tables made from stacked milk crates as fresh oysters are shucked by the half dozen a few feet away. This is a great place to hunker down on a rainy day with a few friends and a deck of cards, or an ideal address for stocking up on a few liters of wine for a raclette feast.

Yelp
Very likely the highlight of our Paris visit. Packed mostly with locals early Friday evening, but the bartenders were more than willing to look past my minimal French and set us up properly with recommendations for both wine (mmmm, Sancerre blanc) and cheese. Dozens of quality wines available for 2.50 to 4.5 Euro per glass, with many bringing bottles in to get filled to go, I almost feel guilty for leaving this review for fear of increasing the likelihood of this place being overrun with tourists, but concluded that this place deserves the props. As one of the patrons said to me, "tres bon place", and I couldn't agree more.

Yelp
My favorite place for oysters and wine in Paris. Low key, stand up, farmers market style wine bar. Have cash and be ready to stand outside.

Yelp
Stopped in for a glass of wine and was not disappointed. Amazing selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff, reasonable prices. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
A group of my friends and I were traveling and stumbled across this little wine shop/tasting room, and had the best time. It was one of the highlights of our Paris trip. It was all locals, super helpful staff and a few delicious little snacks to curb our hunger. I would recommend this place for anyone who wants to get out of the touristy parts of Paris looking for a authentic experience

Yelp
Loved this place. Came in for light lunch and a couple of glasses of wine. Wide selection of top French wines available by the glass. It's located in an interesting area of Paris around the fresh food markets. The area is not packed with tourists (atleast it wasn't the day we we visited). The dudes who ran the joint were friendly and spoke great English, definitely worth a visit if you're in town.

Yelp
This is a great place is you want to see what Paris used to be. It has a very pre-world war two feel about it. There is a mix of tourists and locals. I heard British English, Dutch, Chinese and French while I was there. It has a great ambiance with lots of old wood and wine barrels. They have a great selection of wines where you can get just a glass. There are also small food plates with things like pate, saucissons, etc. I was fortunate to be there when there were not too many people so I easily got a table and could enjoy my food and wine in peace. It is also a stone's throw from one of Paris's oldest farmers market. This place will be on my list of places to visit in Paris from now on.

Yelp
This place was literally one of my favorite things about Paris. It was so amazingly fun!!!! I heard about it from my American friend who lives in Paris - she's been there a while now though so is pretty in the know about hot spots. We showed up at around 8 on a Thursday night. It was pretty busy but not too much. Even though we speak virtually no French - they were unbelievably friendly to us. They made sure we liked everything we tried and tried to explain what the wines tasted like the best they could. The locals who spoke English well even got it on it. I totally agree with an earlier review I read - this wine bar exemplifies the good about Paris. I couldn't tell you what we ordered because everything was in French but if you like wine, I think it would be hard to wrong. If you're an obnoxious American though, please don't go! They seem to have a good view of us over there :) Didn't even have to pretend to be Canadian! Overall, it was amazing and I wish we had been able to go back.

Yelp
Low key wine bar. They buy barrel of wine and sell glasses or bottles from the barrel which makes the price cheaper. Low key atmosphere but great place to stop by for a glass of wine before heading to dinner.

Yelp
Incredibly authentic and unassuming, just the flavor of Paris that you want to experience rather than a tourist choked hell hole that the 1st arr or even parts of Monmarte can be. Get on the metro and go outside of your comfort zone. You will be so glad you came.

Yelp
Wow really cool! It is a very unique place for locals. You can get delicious oysters and delicious wine to very good prices!! totally the place to check out when youre nearby! the only negative point are the toilets... when youre there you will know what i mean...

Yelp
We enjoyed this place when we were in Paris. It was a local hotspot that happened to be close to our hotel. The only issue was it was packed, and I mean packed on Friday and Saturday nights. Even so the bartender was very patient with us as we tasted and tried to find a red wine that kind of tasted like a California Cabernet or an Argentinian Malbec. We finally settled on some of their barreled wine for only 4 euros! They gave us a bottle with a 1 euro deposit to take with us. This is a very cool place if you like wine, it is not snobby and the staff was very friendly and helpful to even us, random American tourists!

Yelp
i found myself at this bar after a red eye from toronto and over 24 hours of sleeplessness. it did not disappoint. it was a mere three minute cobble-stoned walk from our apartment in the rue d'aligre quarter of the 12th, and it was like walking into the most perfect parisian bar of my anglo fantasies. we were there on a saturday when they shuck oysters outside on the sidewalk (8.50 euro for a dozen, with bread and butter), and you consume them on large oak barrels with crowds of smoking, drunk parisians. all the wines, more than 50, were less than 3 euros a glass, and it was standing room only. the bar itself closes early, at 10, but as we found, there are plenty of regulars eager to take you to the next spot down the street (which i cannot recall the name of, on account of the fantastic cotes du rhone). note: the bar is located next to a great farmers market, open daily, which also has a small marche puces when the weather allows. one vendor in the north end of the market sells some lovingly cared for vintage burberry and ysl, for a song.

Yelp
Real cool local and chill spot near the daily Place d'Aligre produce and second-hand markets. The trick here is to figure out how to order: basically go the wine bar and order your wine and cheese. Then go outside, and get some oysters (you can do less than a dozen.) Find an empty table and wedge in. I loved this slice of local flavor. Props to our friends Dan and Teresa for pointing this one out. Hope to return!

Yelp
This is a great place to go any time of the day ! Especially between 16-20h there is usually a crowd of regulars drinking and talking and enjoying the sounds of the nearby market (mon-sat AM). One of the few places in Paris where I have been approached by frenchies just to CHAT ! Am still friends with one of them to this day. An unusual occurrence by my standards.... Anyway, a great place to buy wine or drink it.

Yelp
Went with my wife and daughter, who is living in Paris, on a glorious Sunday morning, long queue for the oysters so we stuck to a bottle of delicious sancerre and charcuterie and cheese, unusual as we dined off a wheelie bin! Loved the atmosphere and followed by a visit to the adjacent market an excellent Sunday

Yelp
We visited Paris from Washington, DC and a couple who who know introduced us to Le Baron Rouge. It was one of our favorite places! They were patient with us as we tried our broken French and were incredibly nice. The wine selection was great and delicious. We even got a bottle to go! Get there early to grab a small table as the place gets packed as the night goes on. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Yelp
maybe my favorite bar that we went to during my stay in paris. this place is teeming with locals, and if you're looking for a good place to have dinner afterwards, don't be afraid to lean over and ask for a recommendation. come for pre-dinner drinks and some appetizers. can't go wrong with a cheese plate and one of 120393849 varieties of wine they have. the bar is small, crowded, and when in season, they serve oysters! the next time i go to paris, this will be my first stop.
google avatar

Yelp
Small place with great wine selection. Staff very patiently helped me pick out a bottle for my friends and I, let me sample some to beforehand. A cool ambiance, and drinks are affordable. Would go back again for evening drinks.

Yelp
This place is worth a trek. It was one of my first discoveries in the area when I was on my own a couple of weeks ago. The crowd in the early evening is fun and lively. Plus a wine bare stacked with barrels and packed to the brim with people is usually good place to check out. Anyhow, if your looking for a place to go hang out in the early evening that is away from the tourists and mostly a local scene this should be on your list.

D. N.

Yelp
I was overjoyed to find this place (I followed the crowd outside). Nothing better than spending a Sunday afternoon sampling local wine and cheese with locals after shopping at the Marche d'Aligre! Super authentic with a bit of hipster vibe. All ages welcome!

Yelp
my favorite place to drink wine " a la cool" since 20 years ! particulary for the French apéro ! not for eat

Yelp
Love this spot for afternoon drinking and eating oysters and charcuteri!

Aliki F.

Yelp
Great place, was so happy to find myself there on a Saturday afternoon...good mix of locals (so you don't feel a total tourist!), but also tourists (so you don't think people look strange at you)...it is the kind of place that screams "Paris like you see it in the movies", so definitely worth visiting.I also thought to myself that I would love living in the neighbourhood, just to be ably to call The Baron Rouge my local spot. The only reason that it misses my 5th star is that the staff won't help you with selecting wine...so it's usually what looks good, most of which is always good so not a real problem :-)
